Rosellas are Australian. They established when they escaped pet owners.

If you ever get the pleasure of visiting Arthurs Pass on the South Island you might run into some peculiar birds. The ex and I were on a road trip there around winter(beautiful with the snow) and ended up at a dead end so we parked and had a look around. We came to a sign that said don't feed the Kea. We turned back to our car and it was covered with Kea parrots trying to rip anything they could from our car. We had to throw some potato chips away from the car so we could close the door and leave.

Real fruit ice-cream has been round for years, generally seasonal and mainly strawberry or apricot. My great Aunty always spoilt us on a hot day with a yummy ice cream from her old but favorite haunt. The place was part of Harrows berry farm, they were a major berry fruit grower in Christchurch. The road side store still operates to this day over the summer time but sadly the fruit paddocks have been gobbled up by housing and life style blocks. There is another very important aspect you might like to touch on apart from the handy beaches and that is in general you are only a stones throw from the country side, in many cases not even a 20 minute drive away, plus you can travel from one coast to the other in a matter of a few hours. You really need to go on a camping holiday, do some research. Not only will you catch up with the wild life, but you'll hear their night calls, certainly Kiwi depending where you go, plus you'll be in totally gob smacked over the night sky and the billions of stars; deep south around Tekapo is prime.

Amazing things - road side stalls - when families put surplus produce out with an honesty box. Every town seems to have a big icon - carrot, fish, gumboot, sheep, bull etc. NZ pies. Seals - hundreds on the Kaikoura coast line, the night sky in the country side (away from city lights) a beach when you are the only person there, the list goes on - but my suggestion is anyone going to NZ - learn how to take good photos - then go camera crazy.

The worlds fatest, lets say largest parrot lives here. You will not see it in the wild as there are only about 150 of them on the planet. However you can see in a few zoo's Such as Auckland Zoo. The Kakapo, so very cute. Search Stephen Fry Shagged by a parrot to see one. The Tuatara lizard, is older than Dinosaurs and other than birds is considered sometimes the only dinosaur survivor. Not really as it is just a lizard. But very rare very cool lizard. The worlds tallest ever bird was the Moa standing as tall as 13 feet and it was preyed on by the worlds largest ever eagle, the Haast Eagle (both now extinct). Search this one for an AMAZING thing to do in New Zealand (there are thousands to do of course, but search this in UT. The Hobbit location leaves Aussies in tears. Solo hiking Able Tasman Park One big development in New Zealand they started back around 2010 was to build numerous bike trails, many of them have lodges and hotels to plan your day from each to the next. There is a bike trail in Queenstown for E bikes to go from winery to winery on a safe non vehicle paved bike pathway. So many more!

😊😊 really enjoy your take on NZ. Before colonization there weren't any 4 legged animals. NZ was rat , cat , dog , cows , sheep and horse free. Mainly Birds and Lizards ruled . 😊

Public intoxication gets a drunk into a world of trouble, more so if they're learing up. The thing is, don't bring your visitor self to Police attention for being a dick. Become white on Rice instead. Public intoxication in the weekend can see an offender in court on Monday and deported soon afterwards. Police here begin their interactions with civilians smiling and nice as pie. But don't underestimate this as weakness, they just prefer to engage with members of the public in a calm respectful way. Unless they are in high risk areas, Police here don't routinely wear side arms. Yet have fast access to them even at the side of the road. Don't view this as making them ineffectual officers. They are not - it's a local tradition. But test them and you'd be surprised just how quick they will effectively and permanently deal with this. Last year there were eleven deaths resulting from Police shootings. Smile, be polite to them because that is the quickest way to have them gone and you can be on your way again. Kia Kaha - be strong.

We're not always that smart when we drink here aye. Perhaps here you don't notice the young ones because the older kiwis are trouble too. Of course if you drink with choice people then you'll have a good night
