Yellow Peril for sure only applies to Asian men. Asian women are considered lotus blossoms and dragon ladies, by contrast. This term really only came about after Sessue Hayakawa (Japanese guy) became known as the first male sex symbol in Hollywood. He had to leave the industry because of anti-Japanese sentiment at the onset of WWII.

Hollywood is against us. That Asian dude on SNL just reinforces the negative stereotype of Asian males. He is always playing a gay geeky Asian guy. Paramount also made Mr. Sulu gay even though George Takei was against it.

Those ignorant dating preferences were caused by the traditional views shaped over centuries in some Asian countries and pushed by the woman's family themselves. Eg. In order for marriage, husband must own a car, own real state, be steadily employed, make more than the wife (hypergamy), etc. To say that those Asian women must be held accountable does not address this root cause, this view is already deeply ingrained in their minds. Instead, the wider culture must be held accountable due to those outdated views hurting the dating prospects of both men and women.

As a white American woman, I had no idea most of these stereotypes existed for asians. I was aware of the covid one and the very smart hard worker one and the submissive one. All the others I had no idea. Maybe it's because I live in an area that is higher in both white and black people than any other race? I myself never look at someone who looks like a different race and think 'foreigner' for sure because in my mind that's often not true. I've always considered the United States as a nation of foreigners and it's one of the things I think makes the United States special compared to most other countries though some others vary in races just as much as us. Pretty much everyone here either is a first-generation immigrant or descended from immigrants. I don't see this country as belonging to one race, culture or that to be American has to be a certain way but I guess if one finds a niche so to speak that helps them socially, then that's great. My mind was blown recently when I learned most actual foreigners (people who were born & currently live outside of the United States) think of and are fascinated with one image that I guess can be called a stereotype but it's true for almost half of white people here at least... is American = Cowboy. Apparently, this is from some of our lawless pioneers that travelled from the eastern regions to the west in hopes of better living which was often glorified in old films by Hollywood in a niche genre called 'westerns'. I don't get it and I don't like anything 'western' in this sense or anything 'cowboy' except for horses 😅

Is the perpetual foreigner thing really imposed? Or is it an internal insecurity? I've stopped several Asian friends while they were talking and suggested they stop referring to other people as Americans and themselves as something different. Or, when they say that they're Americanized, I've said "no, you're just American."
@sleazybtd

Possibly internalized. We get treated as foreigners so much that it just becomes a part of us. For example, I was born in NYC 51 years ago, but people still ask me if I speak English. Also, Andrew Yang, who ran as a presidential candidate for the Democratic party, there was a political cartoon where he was in New York to campaign, and one of the business owners in the cartoon said, "look, the tourists are back" (for context, this was when covid restrictions were winding down).

Just asking for clarification, where was in the source article under The Perpetual Foreigner that referenced AAPI not being "real" American because they just arrived here post 1965 in large numbers, because I couldn't find it referenced in the source article and it's obvious Asians have been noticeably present in the US much earlier, i.e. Filipino in the early 1900s post American-Filipino War and Chinese even further back in the 1800s. Regardless, I can see why Asians in general are considered perpetual foreigners, despite being part of American history in various aspects. Also in regards to the anecdotal example of a lot of Filipino friends feeling the perpetual foreigner pressure, would the relationship between the Philippines and the United States have some reason for that, given that the US had a mission of "Civilizing and Christianizing" the Philippines post Filipino-American War, which would mean American culture/norms/values be a part of Filipino culture, hence the familiarity and less pressure?

@ᜑᜎᜒᜌ Better to be educated and be aware of the truth. History is dirty and ugly at times, but better to have an understanding of the past so we can make better decisions rather than remain ignorant. @Mistwalker801
@Mistwalker801 Год назад
@ᜑᜎᜒᜌ And once again how narrow minded your field of vision is; practically everything is politically motivated and politicized, the whole notion of the Asian stereotypes are politically motivated; the model minority has been used politically use a minority against other minorities, yellow peril was used not only during the Chinese exclusion act and WWII, but even during the 70s and 80s to describe how Japanese automakers were outselling the american auto industry, the "primative villager" was used by America to justify their campaign of "civilizing and christianizing" the Philippines because they were now their unofficial "protectorate" after the Filipino-American war; majority of these stereotypes politically motivated to move an agenda and denigrate a group. So if you were paying attention, you would know this topic is political in nature. Learn to follow directions of the assignment.
@Mistwalker801
@Mistwalker801 Год назад
@ᜑᜎᜒᜌ Huh, response not in Tagalog this time? Never said anything about "highly influenced." Never even said the influence was positive, but you can't deny the influence being there because of the Philippines being colonized by one imperialist superpower after another. Are you also going to say there's no Spanish influence in Filipino culture? I'll make it easy for you and give you a big hint; compare the language of Spanish and Tagalog. You can go ahead and deny it all you want, that's your prerogative, however it still doesn't change that the scars left by both the Spanish and the US have left influences on the Philippines and her people, no matter how subtle it is.

I don't have the source you're asking for, but to give you some context or observation, even though Asians have existed throughout American history, we've been pretty much forced into Asian ghettos in major cities. So even if on paper, it seems like a city has a large Asian population, if you actually go to the city, Asians will be difficult to find unless you go to the local Chinatown. All these Chinatowns are essentially Asian ghettos. Historically, Asians have been redlined by homeowners from purchasing houses anywhere other than in their respective Chinatown. It's not some conspiracy, but white people selling their homes will just not sell to Asians. Buffalo, NY is a good example, there is a large Asian population there, but you'll be hard pressed to see any Asians unless you go to Chinatown. Hell, look at Florida, they recently passed a law preventing Asians from purchasing property. Yes, they're talking about foreign Asians, but seriously? Texas also, tried to pass a similar law, but I don't know the current status.
