There's a very specific inspiration for Tony Stark's OCD tendencies. For more awesome content, check out: whatculture.com/ Follow us on Facebook at: / whatculture Catch us on Twitter: / whatculture #Marvel #MCU #Thor
My favorite thing is how Robert Downey Jr created the idea that his character eats all the time by sneaking snacks on set and eating them once filming started
It reminds me a similar thing in Ocean´s 12 Brad Pitt´s character. He was also eating all the time as Brad Pitt had not much time for proper food and thought the same thing implies also for his character. If im not mistaken.
Honestly makes him more human of a character too. His character was always busy with meetings, interviews, and being iron man, and he was always busy with acting. So it worked out that he was always eating on the go rather than at designated meal times.
Hand sanitizer scene aside, I don’t think this is why Tony avoids being handed things. IRL, executives and others often avoid being handed any documents by unfamiliar people because they could actually be accepting a document from a person acting as a process server - someone handing them a legal summons. It’s technically not effective, but can be used as a delay tactic.
I’ve always thought it was weird how Cap couldn’t get drunk because he metabolizes the alcohol too quickly, but doesn’t have to constantly eat because his body is chewing through the calories too. 🤔
@@sarmajere2866 i can metabolize meds fast which means I am now on 60mg vyvanse and 20 mg Prozac on normal days and on time of month days 30mg Prozac. Idk about alcohol I don’t drink it
I personally always thought since Cap was in the military and we have to scarf down food really quickly during basic, a habit that has yet to leave me 5 years later that he simply was done and was waiting on the rest of the slow pokes
1st/149th- Army here. It took me about 8 years to break the habit lol. Pro Tip: Set down the fork in between bites, even if you pick it right back up. It will help slow you down so your family doesnt look at your crazy ha
Same, considering how tired the others were, I thought it was more of a case that Cap inhaled the food while the rest were attempting to stay awake between bites. Sidenote: Kicking the habit of scarfing down food was a pain haha. Developed in HS due to cutting for wrestling and still haven't really kicked it almost 10 years later.
For me I thought they were all completely exhausted but Cap's army background meant he finished his shawarma in the time it took Thor to figure out and stop playing with the soda fountain.
Yep, I'd thought Cap DESTROYED his schwarma. He's a soldier, when they stop to eat, they chow down. He's a super soldier to, so then he's probably killed like 3 of those, so he's ready for a nap.
Honestly I thought it was a poke at his history. Since Cap was a good ol' baseball and apple pie kid from the 1940's at the time of the first Avengers he was shown to be still getting used to this new future he'd found himself in. Our inclination towards foreign and cultural foods being one of them.
For the whole "What the f-" ending of Far From Home, I'm not sure that particular soundbite was because of studio mandate. As you'll recall, Homecoming ended with Aunt May seeing him in his suit and also going "what the f-" before being cut off as well, and it didn't seem like her character was under the same clauses as Spider-Man, so it was more of a returning gag there than anything else it seems.
Not to mention anyone who's read the comics knows they have no problem having the characters curse. If this DOES have anything to do with cursing in films it has more to do with retaining a PG-13 rating than it does Marvel not wanting its characters to be seen using bad language.
What about the Black Widow constantly mentioning " this is just like Budapest ", to the point where Hawkeye answering back one time, something like " you & I have very different memories of Budapest ".
The single knife flip is relatively easy...still trying to get the double one. It's actually very hard to do intentionly, especially if you wanna be perfectly synchronised. Lucky shot indeed
It’s one of those things that you just do and then you look at yourself like “that was awesome! How did I do that?” Then you try to figure it out and just fail over and over. You can’t think about doing it, you just gotta do it.
@@emperordragon1794 the one in the Ragnarok was genuine cuz he said he tried it for fun cuz he had time left on the shoot and accidently nailed it, but if I remember he's doing it too in Loki and that one is probably CGI
I was quite happy to learn about Howard Hughes' (and technically, Tony Stark's) contamination OCD struggles, as someone with contamination OCD myself, this served as an exciting reminder that OCD doesn't necessarily mean someone can't be successful.
9:45 Here I thought it was because he shoveled his food down in typical serviceman fashion. In boot camp you don't get a whole lot of time to eat, it becomes ingrained to eat fast because you don't know when you'll get time for another meal.
I found nixing the main meal in boot to be faster. Get a salad, & macaroni salad, mixed. Meant no excess fats from dressing & just wet enough w the carbs to make it go down easier. While I was finishing my meals, everyone else was struggling w the heaviness the main courses were leaving others w.
Forget Loki's knife flip. What about his multiple "hair flips" in the TV show. It's almost like Hiddleston is annoyed by the long haired wig and is flipping his head back to clear his vision.
I'm a guy with hair down to my hips. I'll tell you now if you have hair that long and it isn't styled or pulled back you HAVE to do the hairflip regularly to get it out of your eyes. Probably even more-so for someone who isn't used to having long hair like him who probably does find it incredibly distracting.
...you may have just inspired my Muse to do something with a crossover between MCU Loki and Wicked, on account of that one scene where Glinda is teaching Elphaba how to flip her hair... (though there's already a fanvid of Thor and Loki set to "What Is This Feeling" and it's *hilarious* )
Honestly I assumed someone handed Tony something dangerous when he was younger. Like a type of bomb, or anything else that would directly harm him. An incident with glass maybe? Or someone quickly shoved something into his hands and Tony ended up blamed for whatever it was. Even someone having to set it down first can change the result of the encounter, and it gives Tony time to figure out if he's willing to touch whatever it is. His aversion to being handed things made sense to me with how many people try to kill him on screen, let alone before Iron Man 1. Just because we didn't see it on screen does not mean people haven't tried to kidnap/kill/otherwise harm Tony before. After all, he grew up in the spotlight as the genius child of a rich family before himself becoming an even richer man.
So it's cool if a fireman steals from houses? He straight up steals Hawkeye's costume from the burned out apartment. Imagine coming home to your house on fire and one of the few things to survive the fire is stolen
it just seemed like Clint didn't care enough to get the guy in trouble, he just wanted the suit back. this was faster, and fun. clint is a bit of an anarchist. ;)
@@jenniferharris1280 It's not just that -- that costume ties Clint to a whole bunch of actionable actual crimes. He's not going to get the law involved in a situation with it if he has a choice, particularly with a family.
Things like the knife flip can be mastered in a day if you stick with it. Start off with your dominant hand and when you can catch 10 out of 10, practice with your off hand. When you can catch 10 out of 10 with your off hand, do both hands at once. Once you can do 10 out of 10 with both hands at the same time, you're golden. And it probably won't even take you more than a couple hours. Tom Hiddleston had DAYS of fight choreography training, so he probably had long ago mastered the knife flip, and just kept that trick in his back pocket for a rainy day.
My husband got actually so far that he can flip anything now and he just loves freaking me out by flipping full bottles of beer and wine at the store 🤦🏼♀️ (Before you freak out, he never dropped anything and yes, you bet I'd make him pay for it!)
I enjoyed the shawarma (hope that is the right spelling) end scene in the Avengers. Made them all seem a tiny bit more 'normal', just enjoying some down time and good food after a hard days work.
My dad grew up in Spain, when he was 9 ( during the Spanish civil war) he was evacuated to the UK. All his life he was able to speak fluent Spanish to the extent that native Spaniards didn't believe he was English
I always assumed the “I don’t like being handed things” game from the fact that he was just “handed” a billion dollar company and some people may have thought he didn’t deserve it, so it was just him being spiteful and saying “I don’t like being handed things” to annoy the people who didn’t like him for that.
I quite like the last one because it adds to the idea that the fight was harsh enough for Cap to be tired. I mean he looks like he's asleep anyway. Lol.
Just to be a Nerd, its actually "uncharacteristic" . Excluding Thor , Cap has the HIGHEST regeneration rates of anyone at that table....remember .....He can do this all day. :P
@@commandershepard7728 Banner was Hulk. Ok he might feel the tiredness. Tony was in a suit of armour Natasha looks way more tired than him Same with Clint.
I always thought Tony didn't like being handed things because someone handed him a letter or smth explaining that his parents died and afterwards gained a phobia or maybe just a fear that if he's handed anything it will tell him that someone else he's close to has died. No clue where that idea came from, though, but it fits bc in Age of Ultron, Wanda shows Tony his fear and it's the Avengers dead or dying.
@@thatHARVguy yeah that's my dad's super power too. He says they only had so much time to eat so if you wanted to get it all in you had to wolf it down.
I always interpreted Tony not liking to be handed things as him wanting to be seen as his own man rather then just having gotten everything handed to him by someone else like his father handing his company and money over to him when he died.
Based on the powers of Scarlett Witch, it can easily be explained away that the reality altering nature of her abilities would allow her to subconsciously adapt to new behaviors almost instantaneously. Everything can be explained in the realm of comics and graphic novels. You just need to analyze the tropes and almost every limit in fiction can be explained away by some new piece of information.
I assumed the Tony Stark not liking being handed things was to do with the avoidance of being served legal document. On the Captain america not eating, it does suggest with the unenthused eating of everyone else that the place is awful.
That is the most thoughtful closing of a youtube video I've ever seen. Thank you Jules. I kinda needed to hear something like that today. Seriously. Thank you.
7:37 Wooden spoons have completely different balance. So, flipping things in my hands is a habit I have, albeit mostly water bottles. The balance of the knife is in the blade, as it should be, which allows more maneuverability and accuracy when in use. When flipping these the handle flips around the blade, allowing it to be caught more easily. A wooden spoon or ladle is usually the same lighter material throughout, and has a balance dead center. With most cooking this doesn't matter, but I don't think I could flip these. It would move to fast, and be too hard to predict. Lower mass, higher speed for same momentum.
I used to like to flip a small claw hammer, smack the handle to reverse the direction in midair, then catch it. The thing is, because of the way it was balanced, if I tried to just catch it without the reverse, I'd drop it almost every time. As you said with the spoons, it was moving too fast.
I genuinely miss the Captain America: Winter Soldier, Bucky. Whatever's Marvel did with him afterwards was a disservice to his super soldier trained assassin skills. They basically did a Bruce Banner on him and Falcon & Winter Soldier confirmed it. 😮💨
That message at the end, man. I love that you're not some dude for attention or you wouldn't have said this. A huge thank you for being a good Human. 👏
Funny that the “superhero pose” was a gag in Deadpool… Especially when you remember that Deadpool was written to be totally against Marvels rule book. With swearing, sex references etc. It was eventually taken on by Marvel films, even though hated Deadpool and opposed it being made, he still nabbed a cameo…
@@alexubel They shelved it. It was only when some test scenes were leaked (probably by Ryan Reynolds) that fan pressure got them to start production. Then because it made the most money for that rating of film, they made the sequel. Marvel comics basically Hated Deadpool because he swears, kills etc - doing everything Marvel heroes didn’t do. Stan Lee tried to block Deadpool being made but lost out due to fan pressure on the studio encouraging them to make it. Studios make films that make them money, that’s it.
Jules is the best. I always look forward to the personal message to the fans at the end of the vids. You're awesome too Jules and don't YOU forget it either. 💖
I feel like Deadpool is the one behind the whole yelana dissing widow's posing thing because as we all know "Whooo SUPERHERO LANDING... Ya know that's really hard on your knees, totally impractical they all do it"
Regarding Pepper Pots' barefoot in Joss Whedon's Avengers films, there is also the fact that Whedon has a thing about feet. This is most notable in Firefly where River's feet play a prominent role in some episodes and also in the movie. If you look closely his fetish can be seen elsewhere in his works. Not judging.
Oh, Whedon had a thing about feet... It can't be as much as Tarantino, if you watch his films it is unavoidable to conclude that he has that particular fetish. I am not judging either, no matter that I have the opposite feeling toward feet. But, I have my "favorite" things too, I like well-developed, good-looking calves on women's bodies.
@@WA-jt3db Well, it is always good if one finds a way to connect work and pleasure. That happened to me, my work is such that it gives me pleasure doing it, and sometimes I fill guilty...Not that I am, but probably on some semi-subconscious level I think that work should not be so much fun...
@@WA-jt3db And, besides that, if she was wearing shoes, that would mean complicated scenes, false perspective... Complications. I am not sure, is she really tall, or he is kinda..short? Or both things in combo...
@@WA-jt3db She is 175 centimeters tall, and he is 174... He is average, she is tall, as far as I know, 175 centimeters is the lowest height for professional female models.
There is a second reason Tony Stark does not like things handed to him....in the US when someone sues you in court you are "served" the papers by a process server who has to hand the papers directly to you as the person being sued, or directly to your Lawyer if they are already known to the court. :)
To add to this, a process server must also ascertain your identity as well. It isn't enough to just hand them papers, they have to get you to acknowledge your identity, which they do in creative ways. This is also a rule when you are being arrested by Police; the acknowledgement of identity. In the US and many countries Law is largely governed by The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). A flesh and blood human being is obviously not a product but can be made a product by taking responsibility for a name which is why social security numbers, drivers licenses, IDs, Passports, and Birth Certificates are in ALL CAPS. By identifying yourself you are tying ourself to the ALL CAPS name and now they can apply charges/debts to the ALL CAPS name. Yes, there is a reason you are "Charged" with a crime.
I legit ended up with PTSD as a kid from answering the door without knowing the person was a process server- hey, is your mom home? Called for mom, not knowing better, ended up with an eviction notice. I refused to answer the door for _years_ because of that. I still get a little moment of panic if someone knocks and I'm not expecting them, even as an adult. I know serving notice is important for the legal system to actually work, but holy hell, I loathe process servers like that. Like, they knew damn well a little kid had no reason to think they were someone that couldn't be trusted.
My dad was a process server. If so and so refuses to accept the papers, all you have to do is explain that they are being sued and tell the court date. Then you can set the papers within their reach and leave
@@marcmontalvo787 The part your Dad forgot to tell you was that he then had to go to court and prove that the person he served the papers to was the actual person being served. I get it, most people do not know their rights and would never think to have them prove they were actually served, but it raises questions when the "served" person doesn't appear in court and the process server doesn't get paid.
This isn’t entirely true. You don’t have to “hand” the paperwork to someone. You can personally serve someone even if they throw their hands up and say “I don’t want it.” You can’t literally drop it at their feet. It still counts.
It's good to finally know why Tony never wanted to be handed things, I've always wondered, and I've tried looking it up before but never found the answer
What about Tony Stark always grabbing his (left?) arm all the time like he hurt it a long time ago and it still pains him after exerting himself? I've seen it in tons of his movies.
It may be his homage to westerns. John Wayne did it at the end of "The Searchers" as homage to a mentor who had recently died. I believe it was Harry Carey.
@@campcamp7389 I always thought it was either a bad sign reflecting a potential heart problem and/or a reflex from the time that he had to worry about having a heart attack. The idea of it being a callback from the fighter jet in IM never once struck my mind. @Jason_Reiyn You’re talking about when he was flying back from Gullmira (sp?) and ran into the fighter jets which locked onto him and he eventually told his friend to just say it was a “training exercise”?
One of those spider man rules is a little odd, no wonder we haven't gotten a live action miles morales no matter how much the fans scream into the void for it, oh well spider verse was so good it makes up for it I guess.
Nice way to end the vid there Jules, everyone has their own unique quirks and kinks, and nothing wrong with that as long as it doesn't harm those around you. The rest of it was great too, but I couldn't pass on saying something about an excellent ending note!
Except Spider-Man HAS sworn in the MCU, did you forget when he said "holy shit" in Captain America: Civil War? Before anyone says "but he hasn't sworn in his movies" the video is about quirks within the MCU as a whole not just within a character's specific movie
My in universe reason for Cap not eating at the end of Avengers is because he's nodding off. After everything that happened that day I'd want a nap more than food.
"Spiderman never swears" Uhhh.....no. Did you completely forget about his iconic "Holy shit!!!!" reaction to seeing Giant Man at the airport in Germany for the first time??
That doesn't stop you from being served though. All the server has to do is correctly identify the party and leave the paperwork with them. They don't need to touch it or anything. it's called Drop Service. There are only a few states that don't allow it.
I mean... that makes sense in the real world... but this is a movie with a guy flying around in a metal suite fighting ET alongside a god and some guy with a boy and arrow lol. I feel like it be safe to assume some other movie tropes like being served would carry over.
@@neage7171 that's not a trope though, it's a feature of the real world. It doesn't make sense to refuse to accept paperwork. And someone like Tony would know that. When people avoid being served in movies, the trope is to NOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF. because that's really the only way to avoid being served. Rejecting paperwork doesn't do anything.
It's trauma from the death of his parents. Being handed things reminds him of the mountains of papers that were handed to him to sign after his parents death.
They may have cut it off, and covered it with a car horn, but he definately said it "in the MCU". Also he spent a good part of No Way Home with murderous intent on Norman Osbourne.
He also swore in Civil War but that was probably bc Sony wasn’t part of that. I guess to them it also doesn’t count if he doesn’t fully go through said murderous attempt.
@Jules I love you man, thanks for your encouraging pep talks at the end of your vids, it has helped in my times of struggle. YOU are awesome! Stay kind, stay safe
Pardon my French here but in Civil War our friendly wall crawler said "Holy shit!" when Ant Man became Giant Man. I guess that doesn't count as true swearing?
You're thinking about one movie earlier than what they referenced here. May at the end of Homecoming. Spidey at the end of Far From Home / beginning of No Way Home.
