10 Best Hip & Knee Pain Strengthening Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

These hip and knee strengthening exercises are my favorites, and they will progress from fairly easy to a little harder, so there should be some that work for you. Find more knee and hip pain exercises here: • Hip Pain & Knee Pain E...
The first two exercises are hip flexion and hip internal rotation. These are a good way to focus on the hip muscles, but not with too much resistance to start.
Then you will do hip abduction with a band and hip adduction with a ball squeeze. These are also very important to keep the pelvis and SI joint in alignment, so sometimes people feel a little pop with these.
Now getting a little harder, you will go back to the seated hip flexion, hip internal rotation and now hip external rotation too, but now use a band at your feet. This will help activate other muscles and get them working together.
The last three exercises are a progress of sit to stand or squats. First you will do them without resistance, then with a band, and then with a ball squeeze. Make sure you are using correct technique for this movement.

Thanks but all the stores are closed, my gym too (NYC), so it's not as if I can actually try one out in the real world... I suppose I could go to a playground and wrestle one out of some kid's hand, social distancing be damned, but it'd have to be a pretty young kid, as I'm pushing 70 (though it feels like it's pushing me).

😂 You can use other things besides a ball, like a pillow, foam roller if you have one, yoga blocks, etc. It's really just for something to push into.

Hi, I've subscribed. I'm 70 and unfortunately my medius and minimus tore completely from the bone etc. I had surgery last October but they detached completely again. This of course means I have very little strength in the right leg. I live in Perth Western Australia, so purchasing things from oversees costs a lot more. I will try to purchase the band and give the exercises a go. I have walked thousands of miles (not exaggerated) I've never driven, the surgeon has told me I've just worn out the bones and muscles. The strange part is that the left leg hasn't had the same problems. Thanks Rosemary

As a person that is a poor runner, I can really feel how this is what I've been needing. Thought it was just an energy thing, but it was always the hips that were tired before anything else.

Hi Jo My knees are giving way down hill and downstairs. Have had lower back pain for years. Better with long walks but hard at first. Thanks for the exercises. I will do them😊

This has been a perfect find! I am working diligently to strengthen my legs my hips and my knees specifically. I just received my exercise bands and happened upon your video this morning purely by accident! And your video is so easy to follow, so well described and I know that I am going to be able to Watch it and re-watch it and re-watch it and really have good workouts! Thank you so very much! Hiya, new subscriber and watcher. I am sooooo glad you have a hip video sitting in a chair. I have all tile floors, so the ground was never gonna happen. I was in an accident and the other car hit us right at my right hip, hard enough to spin our car about 300°. Now, my right side, especially hip, hates me. Between being heavy, mild scoliosis in my lower back, and previous ruptured patellar tendon; I'm nearly always in pain. I literally don't remember not being in pain daily. I'm so grateful to have something to try. Chronic pain is sucking life energy out of me. Anywho, if you could please point me in the direction of any other sitting stretches you've done, I'd be super appreciative. God bless.

Hi :) Thanks for the video! I'm a runner and a hiker so I'm used to longer runs and hikes, but 8 days ago, while I was finishing my 37km hike (last 2km of the hike), I felt pain on my right knee hiking downhill. I went home, stretched and massaged my legs. 2 days after, my whole body had completely recovered from the hike, but I still could feel a discomfort on my right knee (not pain). And everytime I had my right leg bent and then straightened it, I could feel a pop on my upper kneecap region (no pain). Now it has been 8 days and it still pops everytime I straighten the leg and it still doesn't hurt doing my everyday things like walking, going up or sown a few stairs... Do you know what this could be? And I haven't worked out in any way since that hike.

Been looking for some strength exercises to strengthen my hip muscles as I have bad arthritis and have been favouring that leg to the point that my muscles are very weak (my own fault) not ready for hip surgery yet and am pretty sure if I get my muscles stringer I can delay the surgery. Also need to strengthen my IT band and think these will help, thanks so muc!

Thanks for showing so many stretching exercises but their is a small problem- because of your subtitles we are not able to see your feat movements or when you sit on the floor and explain those leg movements is not seen . Thanks

Hi Dr. Jo! I was doing powerlifting for 3 months last year but after that, my knees start to feel very weak. I think I was too eager to add weights and my posture was not the best. Now, I have very weird feeling knees. I checked with a GP and she said the lubricated part of my knee is wearing out. Will these exercises help me gain back my knee strength, and can I do it every day? Love your videos btw, thank you for putting so much care in our videos

Are these exercises good for osteoarthritis of the knees? I have quite a bit of weakness in my legs which causes me to feel unsteady when walking. I'm trying to avoid surgery for now by strengthening the surrounding muscles, which I've been told will reduce pain also.

Hi dear I have osteoarthritis stage 2 to 3 .am so lazy don't walk don't exercise at all. So can feel discomfort while sitting I feel I don't get that support. Can I do this? I have knee pain off n on ..and have cervical spondylitis..too

Dr. Jo, I have. Dx of PFPS (5 mos ago) and have had a recent tissue irritation flare up. I am supportive of Dr. Dye’s envelope of Fx and so I am resting my knee from most load bearing activities. However, I am continuing my PT exercises that maintain and strengthen my quads, glutes, hamstrings and hips. I especially want to strengthen my hips because I have had a bit more pain in the hinge spot where quad and hip meet on the leg (RT) that is experiencing PFPS. My quad had atrophied a bit so I am guessing the rest of my RT side has weakened as well. Are the exercises good for my situation? If bot can you recommend any other video you have made that would be a better fit. My goal is to rest the knee from loading while strengthening the muscles around my knee. Thank you!

That could be a number of things. You really need to get a proper diagnosis first. I don't know what it could be since I can't evaluate you.

You're welcome. It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.

on the adduction exercise is it better to have wider ball/object or will a smaller one suffice?

If you can, you want it to be a wider ball, so your knees are about hip width apart (so it strengthens it in a neutral position). Good luck.
