These knee arthritis stretches will help stretch out the muscles above and below the knee joint to help relieve knee pain from arthritis. More knee arthritis stretches & exercises: • Knee Arthritis Stretch...
The first few knee arthritis stretches are for the calf, which crosses the knee joint, stretching the joint itself with a heel slide, and stretching the quad. Since the quad tendon is connected to the patella (kneecap), it is very important to stretch.
The next knee stretches are the hamstring and IT band stretch. Both these cross the knee joint, so when they are tight, they can put a lot of pressure on the joint causing pain.
Then there is the piriformis/gluteus stretch, groin stretch, and hip flexor stretch. Although most of these muscles don’t actually cross the knee joint, they have a lot to do with how it works, and they help keep the hip flexible as well. This all will help relieve the knee arthritis pain.
The last two stretches for knee arthritis are standing up. For the adductor muscles, some do cross the knee joint, but others will put pressure on the knee joint if they are tight. And finally, the anterior tibialis muscles have a lot to do with pulling our toes up when we walk. So if the knee is not working how it’s suppose to, these muscles can get overworked and very tight.

You have no idea what perfect timing this is! I'm only 38 and started having knee pain about a week ago. Of course, I expected it to go away, but it hasn't at all. And I had to do a 5 hour drive which flared it up incredibly. I have arthritis in my hands and feet so I'm guessing that's what's in my knees, too. These stretches are already a life saver. Thank you! Oh, and a helpful hint for the butterfly stretch or any seated stretch can be placing a pillow under the hips - it will help maintain good length in the back :)

Thanks Dr Jo ! Your videos are very informative and straight to the point. I have learnt a lot from you. I have been doing morning stretches before I begin my day and it helps a lot. I do have arthritis in both knees but left one is bit troublesome, I developed a kind of ganglion cyst on my foot and is very painful and swollen. My GP says it’s the fluids from the knee joint that leeks and goes to the foot. So today I have got an appointment with the consultant in hospital, and see what he says. Love your dogs, they look lovely sitting there with you. Love from UK. X

Thanks Doctor Jo. Of all your stretching videos, this is my favorite. I usually get hip pain and lower back pain when doing household chores, inside or outside. When I do this stretching routine, plus some lower back stretches, I can keep going with no pain. Makes me wonder why Doctors don’t prescribe PT more often. Thanks again.

It is really good info and great knee exercises. Could i know what kind of exercise for knees with arthrosis? They normally crunching when I use steps but without pain. Could i get strength them to avoid get worse them? Thanks

What’s your opinion of holding a very gentle stretch for a longer period of time? Such as 2,3, or 4 minutes? I’ve experimented with this and it feels very good. Since this obviously takes longer, I only use 3-4 stretches. I’m interested in a PT opinion on this. Thanks!

A longer stretch, especially with a stiff joint versus a tight muscle can be very helpful to get more mobility without as much pain.

You usually recommend holding each stretch for 30 seconds and doing each 3 times. If my time is limited, can I do one 30 second stretch instead of three?

Yes, I would definitely do less sets, but still hold the stretch for 30 seconds.

New ideas 💡 keep popping up in my brain so I’m thinking let’s see what Doctor Jo says. 🙂 Can stretches also be done as active movements? Is this dynamic stretching versus static stretching? Such as the quad stretch, hamstring stretch, etc. Hold the stretch 3-5 seconds, release, then another 3-5 seconds, release, etc. And do that about 10 times.

Yes, dynamic stretching is a stretch with movement, but not really holding the stretch. For example, if you are walking forward, keep your leg straight and kick it up while walking, like a soldier march. This will stretch your hamstrings. It's usually used more as a warm up before a workout to help get the muscles moving and loose at the same time.

AskDoctorJo One more question. (HA! I’ve said that before!) You have said to do 3, 30 second stretches on each side. But how often? Everyday? Every other day? I’ve noticed my quads and hamstrings feel sore if I stretch them every day. But upper body stretches I can do every day, sometimes twice, and they feel great. Thanks.

It really depends on what you are stretching for. If you have an injury, I usually recommend a few times a day, but if you are just stretching for general tightness, I would do as many as you feel comfortable with. So if you have soreness in certain areas from stretching, maybe once every other day.

Mam , when l sit l can"t get up without support. I am not having any joint pain. And not any decease .l am 52 year old , hight 5.6 feat. Weight 84kg. Which stretched helpful to me . Please give me some explanation doctor.
