Hi Joie, this was a great video. If only it had been around when I was starting out! My worst buy was the Crafter's Companion Ultimate Pro, I wanted to make gift boxes but soon discovered many videos showing one how to make them simply by cutting/scoring. I had all the add ons that one could buy for it... and they all got replaced by better tools. In the end I gave it away to someone who was just starting out so they could have a go without spending any money. My best buy has been my paper trimmer, it's robust and has a range of interchangeable blades that can do scoring, decorative edges, perforations etc. I wouldn't be without it.
@joiedefi
@joiedefi 3 года назад
We all make some of those decisions...I actually nearly bought that Crafters Companion thing too. It was on TV all the time. I love the idea of different scoring blades..... Thanks so much for popping by again Carol, great to see you again!😀👍💜💜💜

Good fabric scissors are super expensive, but they will last a lifetime if you keep them away from paper. Did you realize you can get a scoring blade for your Fiskars cutter? That would eliminate the need for your wooden score board, but it might not be as satisfying. Sometimes the sensory satisfaction makes a tool worth keeping. This is a great video, Joie. You are a natural teacher.

This was very informative, thank you. I thought you were a seamstress because of the beautiful seams you sew on your artwork. I have owned four sewing machines in my lifetime. (actually made my wedding dress) I am without one because I handed mine down to my granddaughter. I just need a small one so that will be my next purchase. Continued joyful journal journeys for you! I so enjoy your presentation style. 🦋 🌸 🌻 🐦 🪴.

I am a guilty impulse stamp buyer! Although, I rinally found my few favorites and recognize I don't need any more. I wish I had found my ink colors a long time ago! I have a few colors that will NEVER get used. Red is one! I did just purchase a tiny set of 12 metallic water colors that have been my absolute game changer! Just ordered the least expensive cropodile. I have manual eyelet setting tools, but they have gotten more difficult to use. Ordered a script stamp for texture, because none of mine really does anything similar. I'm sure they will be quite useful. I love my gel plate, too, for journal/embellishments as well as pages.

It's true, I just ordered an 8 x 10 and it was about $25. But many people have issues making them, they can get moldy and melt, etc....at cost per use, I'm paying well below a penny a print on my 12 x 12 and expect the same with the 8 x 10.

Thank you. I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate and this was not only helpful, but validating. I have been a quilter for many, many years and have been adapting my tools to making journals and ephemera. Example: I've been using quilter's rulers and a rotary cutter. However, I just ordered a paper trimmer because I realized I need even better accuracy. And, I'm sure there are other comments, but fabric scissors and paper scissors need to be kept and used separately. Thank you again.
@joiedefi

Great point about needing different scissors, this has helped me to think about what to buy next. I feel like mixing fabric into things somehow. Lovely comment Jewel, thanks so much!!💜💜💜
@jeweltompkins8532

@@joiedefi I already use a lot of fabric in my journals, only because a quilter's scraps are just overwhelming. I do crumb quilting, which is sort of like your master boards. Then, add those to cardstock to make soft covers. Still working on finessing the technique. You've really helped me get out of a comfort zone.

This is really good advice - I’ve been junk journalling for a while and I’ve bought some really faddy stuff that I’ve only used once or twice. I have a problematic relationship with using book pages (I do it, but it has to be something I have no emotional tie to, even though I’ve got a lot of gorgeous, slowly ageing books - I’ve even bought modern replacements for my favourites so I don’t damage them further!) . I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the Rupert Annual pages in your journal 😱. My parents bought it for me every year when I was a child, I bought my own when they said I was too old and now my husband buys it for me every year - some how the colours, pictures and rhymes have always sung out to me. I’m 70 this year, so that’s 69 Annuals tucked away safely from scissor wielding hands!
@joiedefi
@joiedefi 3 года назад
I found that Rupert Bear annual at a car boot sale.... The only reason I felt able to cut it up is because it wasn't mine ... If you know what I mean. I have books from my Nana from when I was 5 years old. I totally understand. Those books are going nowhere near my craft room. Thanks for such an amazing comment. ❤️❤️❤️

Really handy video Joie, thank you. I'm guilty of impulse buying after watching videos! That needle is actually an upholstery needle. I got a set and find the 'circular ' needles brilliant for Coptic stitching. Paper blunts the blades so best having separate ones. I love my rotary trimmer for fabric. Thank you soooo much for your excellent explanation of what tools to buy! I truly needed that as a beginner who is so excited to start, but don't know where to start! You offered me a very clear, concise tutorial based on your very knowledgeable experience! Thank you very much, you have inspired me to run out and buy a few tools that I know will serve me well and help me in my journey to create wonderful junk journals! The charts you used were an added bonus, so well thought out! thanks again!

Hi Joie, Great video. Agree with all the tools as basics and or game changers. As a seamstress I would recommend a second hand sewing machine from a specialist dealer. They don’t cost much either and you can get a few lessons to get starting and they do repairs on the sewing machine if you need. Like you said, buy a mechanical one and you can’t go wrong and these are much longer lasting. The quality of the thread you use can make your life easy or difficult, the more expensive brands like guterman, are made of longer fibers and don’t break easily. The cheaper brands split, break and leave more fuzz inside your sewing machine, so you have to clean it. Oops, I could go on. I won’t, but a sewing machine is a spend and you can grow to love it, if it’s a good one or put it away and dread it, if it is disfunctional. Much love, Maud

I have a mini guillotine paper trimmer that use often. But I found a Fiskars Procision Rotary Bypass Trimmer 12 inch at a Ross (discount store in the US) for only $20 ($14.17£)! One if the best buys I've found as I've not seen them less then around $89 & most list for more. Besides making junk journals I also create assemblage art & some mixed media. This paper cutter will cut through thin cardboard/chipboard, fabric, foam board & of course paper. But I have to say the best thing about it is it has a self sharpening blade!
