Why would anyone think Jesus never existed? Isn’t it perfectly reasonable to accept that he was a real first century figure? As it turns out, no. NAILED sheds light on ten beloved Christian myths, and with evidence gathered from historians all across the theological spectrum, shows how they point to a Jesus Christ created solely through allegorical alchemy of hope and imagination; a messiah transformed from a purely literary, theological construct into the familiar figure of Jesus - in short, a purely mythic Christ.
Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed At All
“Fitzgerald’s is possibly the best ‘capsule summary’ of the mythicist case I’ve ever encountered …with an interesting and accessible approach.”
-Earl Doherty, author of The Jesus Puzzle
“Fitzgerald summarizes a great number of key arguments concisely and with new power and original spin. I really learned something from him. Recalls classical skeptics and biblical critics. A surprising amount of new material.”
-Robert M. Price, author of Deconstructing Jesus and The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man
“David Fitzgerald reveals himself to be the brightest new star in the firmament of scholars who deny historical reality to “Jesus of Nazareth.” His brilliance would have been sufficiently established had he done nothing more than illustrate and explain traditional arguments with a clarity and transparency never achieved…But he has done more. He has developed new arguments and insights as well...”
-Frank R. Zindler, editor of American Atheist Press and author of The Jesus the Jews Never Knew
“Fitzgerald has hit the nail on the head…A nice, readable introduction to the top ten problems typically swept under the rug by anyone insisting it's crazy even to suspect Jesus might not have existed.”
-Richard C. Carrier, Ph.D., author of Not the Impossible Faith: Why Christianity Didn’t Need a Miracle to Succeed and the forthcoming book On the Historicity of Jesus Christ
David Fitzgerald is a writer and historical researcher who has been actively investigating the Historical Jesus question for over ten years. He has a degree in History and was an associate member of CSER, the former Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion. He lectures around the country at universities and national secular events and is best known for his popular multimedia presentation "The Ten Thousand Christs and the Evaporating Jesus."

You are not evil for wanting evidence to support the idea of Gob or Jesus especially when there is evidence to support the claim that they don’t exist. My father died of cancer when I was 2.5 years old, and I remember thinking, “Oh, I get it now. God is a fairytale parents tell their children so they won’t be afraid of death.” I struggled with it into my twenties before I finally realized it was hurting me not helping me and so I had to admit to myself that I didn’t believe in God. I was raised Christian, but my mom never forced me to go to church or anything like that, she understands why I don’t believe. But everyone else helped push me away from believing. My aunts (my Pappa’s sisters) all promised me that because everyone was praying for him God would heal him. Bad idea to promise something that you can’t deliver on to a two and a half year old child. I red your comment and felt like I had to tell you your not evil at all. I will bet your the opposite of evil, a wonderful caring person. I know how much it’s always hurt my to be told that I am going to hell. And only Christians have ever said that to me, and mostly when I still was trying to believe. So I just needed to tell you that I know that doesn’t make you bad in anyway at all. Never let judgmental people get to you. Some of us have love for others because we are loving, not because we’re afraid of hell, or want to be rewarded with heaven. I wish you all the best in life. Thank you for giving me a reason to try to show kindness to someone I don’t know. That’s how I know we don’t need God to have morals. Best wishes to you and anyone else who may read this.

@@TheGoldenBear79 your psychological reporting, preference and taste is only an opinion. The metaphysical question of a God concerns Epistemic grounds in which premature death (due to our fallen nature and sin) has nothing to do with. I’m sorry your childhood wasn’t ideal but mine wasn’t either; it sucks. However, being logical with this question of God goes beyond our sense data and we should be “objective” in the sense of epistemology; which shows that there are logical grounds for the Christian God and atheism is self refuting is retarded. I’d suggest asking people like Jay Dyer for more specifics via super chat on streams

I began reading fiction from my mom’s book club before I entered public school but this included all the classic literature from around the world. Excluding science fiction, I realized that the authors pulled directly from their life experiences using genuine details including religions in the subject matter. So I read about the various world religions in this writing and, as a young child I clearly saw that different countries in the world came up with their own religions and they differed greatly. Even within Christianity there was great variety which sometimes conflicted. I did not even have to be especially intelligent to see the Big Picture and that was that humans feel the need for religious faith in order to confront their existences and in the face of their impending deaths. However the vast variety taught me that religion is not proof but rather an inherent need in order to find meaning in human lives. The crimes done in the name of religion are unforgivable. Why can’t we see “the light” of reality?

Science has no good answers for the creation of the universe and of life. The BEST answer is that intelligence was used. In fact, the default of everything man made is that intelligence had to be used. Information must come from intelligence. DNA in living cells is vast amounts if information. The laws of the universe are extremely detailed and precise. Its impossible without God. Probability studies prove that a higher intelligence was required. Once we realize that God is necessary for everything, we wonder why would God make life and not want any relationship with it at all? When we look at which religion actually makes sense to explain that relationship, we only find one. Christianity. It would be impossible for the Bible to be man made. The evidence is completely overwhelming and I'm a skeptic. The evidence needs to be examined. It will take hours to consider the evidence and a comment box on RU-vid is not sufficient to explain it all. But many books have been written and I can provide a list of books that are impossible to form good arguments against. Everything points to the reality that Jesus did come to earth. Even the astronomical fact that we can prove the star of Bethlehem appeared. The Bible accurately predicts the future. Archeology proves many things from the Bible. Its just completely overwhelming for anyone to argue with.

Yes, crimes done in the name of religion are unforgivable. I'd like to add that most religious "crimes" were of the past (except radical Islam) and done during periods when many cultures reverted to horrific practices for punishment and conquering, etc. It reflected more the times people lived as opposed to New Testament teaching, and in spite of what was taught not because of it. It otherwise rarely occurs in name of Jesus (whether you believe or not) because he spoke only of peace and love. He opposed and taught against victimization of any kind. I think we can all agree on that.

@@amyjoyce2301 I can agree that’s what he said as reported in the gospels. But that doesn’t stop Christian Nationalists loving guns, fighting welfare reforms and taking part in book banning. It doesn’t stop them supporting Israel’s current attacks on defenceless children. Neither did it stop the Catholic Church signing agreements with Hitler or finding constant new posts for prolific paedophiles. I agree with your sentiments butthink Jesus is a bit too woke for many of the born again and there are many modern situations where religiosity means callous indifference to suffering. I just wish this wasn’t so.

Gregory Thomas, that's bcz no one is able to disprove nor deny the existance of God, it's just that simple.I mean sure we all have questions about who God is, why was there so much killing in The Old Testament of even women and children, why is there so much suffering in the world, etc, but on the other hand when we consider the heavens & the trillion upon trillions of stars in it , when we consider the mind-boggling intricacies of life right here on earth, when we consider the mathematical constants, the multitude of spoken languages, & I could go on & on, SURELY, there MUST be an Infinitely Great Intelligence to have brought all this into being AND to hold them in PERFECT equilibrium, & this Infinitely Great Intelligence, which of necessity must transcend space & time, we call God.So it all comes down to faith in God, not blind faith, but faith based upon the visible evidence all around us, bcz to try to figure out God Who is Infinite with our human finite minds will only lead to a cul-de-sac.

Till 325 AD, not a single historian or writer wrote about Jesus Christ or any of his disciples . BEFORE THE FIRST COUNCIL OF NICEA IN 325 AD, NOBODY ON THIS PLANET EVER HEARD OF THE NAMES JESUS CHRIST OR CHRISTIANITY. JESUS/ BIBLE / CHRISTIANTY WAS COOKED UP IN 325 AD, BY JEWESS HELENA , WHO SAT ON THE POPE'S CHAIR.. The dead sea scrolls covering the period from Birth of Jesus to 68 AD , does NOT say one word about Jesus or his 12 Apostles. Hellenistic philosopher Philo Judaeus of Alexandria (20 BCE-50 AD/CE)-alive at the purported time of Jesus, and one of the wealthiest and best connected citizens of the Empire- makes no mention of Christ, Christians or Christianity in his voluminous writings. Nor do any of the hundreds of other historians and writers who flourished during the first THREE centuries of the common era. The DEAD SEA SCROLLS were all written by Pagan Essenes . None of them have been edited by later Christians, as is the case with some other Jewish literature. All the scrolls (except a treasure map known as the Copper Scroll) can be dated prior to A.D. 68 or 69, when the Qumran settlement was believed to have been destroyed by the Romans in the Jewish revolt. The oldest of the scrolls probably goes back to the middle of the third century B.C. The people of Qumran belonged to a Pagan religious group known as the Essenes. Pliny the Elder, who died during the volcanic destruction of Pompeii in the year 79 A.D., described a community of pagan Essenes living on the western shore of the Dead Sea, close to where Khirbet Qumran is situated. John the Baptist was an ascetic Essene . He was a vegan and was uncircumcised . Various literary sources like Josephus and Philo tell clearly that Essenes were ascetics. We also know, from literary testimony, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the archaeological remains of Qumran, that the Essenes practiced many water baptisms for ritual purification-similar to a dip in the Ganges or the river Pampa or at Thiirunelli. At Qumran, however, all members of the community were baptized with water for ritual purification. Josephus writes, "And as for their piety towards God, it is very extraordinary; for before sunrising they speak not a word about profane matters, but put up certain prayers which they have received from their forefathers, as if they made a supplication for its rising" (Wars, 2.8.5). This testimony accords well with what we know from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Prayer and humility was one thing that the Essenes . When they cooked up stories about Jesus they wrote that Jesus Christ ate the Last Supper in the Essene part of town. Jesus is not historical character, The Dead Sea Scrolls have produced increasing evidence to cement the fact that Jesus Christ never existed and the whole story was cooked up at the First Council of Nicea in 325 AD. The FAKE gospels were written after 325 AD after Jesus was cooked up at the first Council of Nicea.. Twelve apostles of Jesus never existed. Jesus Christ names 12 apostles to spread his gospel, and the early Christian church owes its rapid rise to their missionary zeal. Yet, for most of the Twelve, there's scant evidence of their existence outside of the New Testament. The concept of using statistics to prove that 'God authored the Bible' is bullshit. Why was the library of Alexandria burnt ? The gospel of Thomas was not written by Jesus' disciple Thomas. Englishman Godfrey Higgins studied Greek, Latin and law at Cambridge . His two-volume, 867-page book Anacalypsis: An Enquiry into the Origins of Languages, Nations, and Religions, was published posthumously in 1836. In his treatise, Higgins writes " the mythos of the Jews and the mythos of the Greeks are all at bottom the same lifted from the ancient mythos of Hindus ; and ... are contrivances under the appearance of histories to perpetuate doctrines," and that Christian editors “either from roguery or folly, corrupted them all.” 1900, Scottish MP John Mackinnon Robertson wrote that Jesus never existed but was an FAKE invention by a first-century messianic cult. He wrote about the First Council of Nicea of 325 AD where powerful forces invented a new god to fit the needs of the society of the time .Robertson specifically mentions the Talmudic story of the Yeshu . Thomas says: "Simon Peter said to them, ‘Make Mary leave us, for females don’t deserve life.’ Jesus said, ‘Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven’" (Thomas 114). AIYOOOOO -even Christians don’t like this When the master of James baby Jesus Christ never existed -- how can his disciple St James exist ? Even since the dead sea scrolls have been discovered CHRISTIANS and JEWS are jumping up and down like demented orangutans claiming that Essenes belong to them. Dead Sea text or Qumran Scrolls have absolutely nothing ZILCH, to do with the Bible of the Torah - never mind the diabolical lies of the Christians and the Jews. For arguments sake -even if messiah Jesus Christ existed , the gospels were written a even a century after Jesus' estimated year of death, by individuals who never met Jesus, and then were edited or forged over the centuries by unknown scribes with their own agendas.

The Romans kept meticulous records. We have to this day census, military conscription, riots and revolts, decrees passed in various parts of the empire, and communication between consules, the senate, and even from various writs from emperors. Yet there are zero mentions of Jesus under any name yet we do have records of who was executed and why. The very notion of an execution during passover, the release of a prisoner based on a crowds vote, and that prisoner not being a jewish citizen of the province is completely contrary to any tradition or record. Criminals were put to death. Period. There wasn't a democratic process involved.

@@dazv3605 thats true, and the opportunities that are given for him to identify he uses vague phrases " i am what you say i am" "im the son of man" he calls god his father, but every myth has a legendary or deity as a farher. So it could be that he grew up in a sect that called YHWH "father" rather than the forbidden Rabbinical name used by the temple priests. And even given that, so much insinuation and deeper story needs to be added to make the direct connection tp yhwh and the house of David that you really need everylast bit id wall plaster to hide the gaping hole. Angels just dont quite cut it for i dunno, is there a word specifically meaning Raped by God? Railed by the almighty? The messiah was also supposed to come from the tribe of Judah, the warrior tribe. David was just another schmo that spied on naked hairy jewish chicks while dancing on the roof ofvhis palace naked playing the lyre. Probably badly at that. Itsvhard to concentrate on my bass when hot sleazy chicks are flashing their tits so ill cut him some slack but vome on? Peeping? Lol The first jewish scholar to mention him was josephus in the later first century. The gospels were pit together at the first council of nicea, in 325 CE AND THEN EDITED TO REmove the infancy gospels, mary, gospel of judas (which was written prior to Revelation of John the Divine but excluded simply because itvrevealed that Iscariot was doing what jc had asked of him. It even references the kiss that judas gave, givingbeach man a final ssy jesus says thank you, you have done my fathers will while judas begs his forgiveness apologises. Interestingly the suicide of judas without spending the silver coinscan be seen in another book but without the conversations. Hes branded a traitor and hangs himself as an act of contrition. Now being schizophrenic and bipolar ive experienced suicidal thoughts and acts as punishmebts for my failings. Ive done things that i was given little choice in and carry that guilt still. Ancient israelwas built on guilt every mystery cult at the time taught physical suffering for eternal glory with god or simply as purifucation for the initiate. Since so much ancuint tradition originates around the Levant wouldnt it make sense that a newly wealthy man would be of living it up or that a man asked to betray a man he saw as brother and teacher kills himself out of the weight of that guilt. Somehow people have put the characters of their religion in a position outside of humanity. Like the followers of jc werent also human or forvthat matter rhat jc wasnthiman. If hes god in human form then he is experiencieng reality as a human. With all the embarrassments and dreadful teenyears. And off time period here but you just know there was a kid that tried to get out of chores or school because they had a touch of the plague that was creatively applied mud on bad acne.

The supposed savior of souls of Christians, was just the most recent savior-myth story. Example as follows, from the book, and please note how Chrishna was spelled, before the Christians came up with the word Christ, and how the Hindus then changed the spelling of their supposed savior to "Krishna." The World’s Sixteen Crucified Saviors … Christianity before Christ, by Kersey Graves … first published in 1875. and finally these twenty Jesus Christs (accepting their character for the name) laid the foundation for the salvation of the world, and ascended back to heaven. 1. Chrishna of Hindostan. 2. Budha Sakia of India. 3. Salivahana of Bermuda 4. Zulis, or Zhule, also Osiris and Orus, of Egypt. 5. Odin of the Scandinavians. 6. Crite of Chaldea. 7. Zoroaster and Mithra of Persia. 8. Baal and Taut, “the only Begotten of God,” of Phenicia. 9. Indra of Thibet. 10. Bali of Afghanistan. 11. Jao of Nepaul. 12. Wittoa of the Bilingonese. 13. Thammuz of Syria. 14. Atys of Phrygia. 15. Xamolxis of Thrace. 16. Zoar of the Bonzes. 17. Adad of Assyria. 18. Deva Tat,aud Sammonocadam of Siam. 19. Alcides of Thebes. 20. Mikado of the Sintoos. 21. Beddru of Japan. 22. Hesus or Eros, and Bremrillah, of the Druids. 23. Thor, son of Odin, of the Gauls. 24. Cadmus of Greece. 25. Hil and Feta of the Mandaites. 26. Gentaut and Quexalcote of Mexico. 27. Universal Monarch of the Sibyls. 28. Ischy of the Island of Formosa. 29. Divine teacher of Plato. 30. Holy One of xaca. 31. Fohi and Tien of China. 32. Adonis, son of the virgin Io of Greece. 33. Ision and Quirinus of Rome. 34. Prometheus of Caucasus. 35. Mohammud, or Mahomet, of Arabia. These have all received divine honors, have nearly all been worshiped as Gods, or sons of Gods; were mostly incarnated as Christs, Saviors, Messiahs, or Mediators; not a few of them were reputedly born of virgins; some of them filling a character almost identical with that ascribed by the Christian’s bible to Jesus Christ; many of them like him, are reported crucified; and all of them, taken together, furnish a prototype and parallel for nearly every important incident and wonder-inciting miracle, doctrine and precept recorded in the New Testament, of the Christian’s Savior. Surely, with so many Saviors the world cannot, or should not, be lost.

I wish my paternal grandmother had lived long enough to see all the research now coming out about the roots of Christianity. She was a southern Bible belt "true believer", a tyrant who wanted all around her to be as besotted with "her saviour" as she was. An evangelist, she hated non believers, declaring in front of my father (her son) and me (her granddaughter, age 8) that "atheists need to be hunted down and hanged! They should not be treated as citizens!!" She wasn't kidding. She'd been a member of the KKK, imported into Southern Oregon in the 1930s-50s by immigrants from other states. Such virulence was common among the religious. They attempted to make me from that mold....I don't think my grandmother realized her desire to murder atheists would extend to me when I became an adult. I wonder seriously how she would react to me if she were still alive! We forget how recently religion absolutely controlled thought in so many communities. Thomas Jefferson well knew the power the clergy exerted. Thomas Payne was a writer in this area. I'm so proud of these present day scholars who are peeling back the layers of ignorance about actual Christian history. Great video!!

I'm taking a guess here: Bart Ehrman will never come to the conclusion that Jesus never existed. That's... really not true. In the slightest. I don't know why certain atheists and antitheists keep pulling this line. It discredits any criticism of Christianity because it's so easily proven false: Non-Christian sources in the Roman Empire attested to the existence of a figure known as 'The Christ' by his followers, and his execution by crucifixion as a rebel leader, which informed later Roman persecution of the early Christian sects as being, well, formed around an anti-Roman rebel. The Bible is compiled from various writings of the period, and while the supernatural claims it makes are unfalsifiable, and we know some of the biographical information such as the birth in Bethlehem rather than Nazareth, is likely fabricated to suit the narrative of the Messianic prophecies, that's kind of like saying that Hitler didn't exist because there's a lot of bullshit claims about him being made in many sources like History Channel "documentaries". The rational skeptic view is to accept that Jesus was almost certainly a real historical person, an apocalyptic Jewish preacher like many others of his time and period, and his followers incorporated his death by execution into their theology in a way that isn't that dissimilar to many other smaller cults throughout history. Taking it as dogma that Jesus didn't exist as though that's the only way Christianity can't be true is... well, just silly.

Its interesting that hundreds of prophesies came true. Lucky guesses? Interesting that the star of Bethlehem appeared as prophesied and can be proven by astronomy software, since the stars are based mathematically and can obviously be calculated. Something we discovered in precision AFTER the Bible wrote the words. Interesting that Jesus had Hematohidrosis which is described in the New Testament even though science hadnt discovered it. Pleural effusion is also described, even though nobody knew what that was at the time either. Those had to be lucky guesses. All the prophesies would be impossible to guess but they are there. The Archaeological and historical evidence that has been found has supported scriptures. Jesus appeared to hundreds of witnesses after his resurrection. We use eye witnesses as evidence to this day. Christianity spread like wildfire in the early years. If it was a lie it would have been easy to prove by finding Jesus body or by many other ways and would have fallen flat. The entire world time line is separated into BC and AD, marking Jesus appearance as most significant. It would have had to be in an enormous conspiracy over hundreds of years to make it happen and that doesn't explain how they could predict the future or control the stars or plant evidence in the ground. None of that. And we could continue for hours just listing off the evidence that supports it.

I grew up jewish, and I think this gives me an interesting perspective because I never grew up in a milieu in which the existence of Jesus was ever assumed. When I asked my parents growing up, they said that most Jews think that Jesus probably existed but wasn't divine. Note the probably, there was never any conviction here nor there, or really any care about Jesus in my upbringing or surroundings. Therefore, I've always found it surprising when secular people are so adamant in his existence. I have recently been getting into Bible history and literacy from a history and literature perspective. I have to say that in doing so I went from assuming Jesus probably existed, to having to go with the null hypothesis which is that he did not exist. I just assumed that the way people spoke from a secular historical point of view of Jesus must have had some deep merit, but it really seems like it doesn't. It seems to me equally likely that some random Messianic preacher got hung on a cross and legend sprung up regarding him, as it is equally likely that these legends formed regardless of the initial historical impetus. I find the argument regarding consensus on this matter really counter productive and dissuading. The fact that everyone in academia agrees that Jesus existed is obviously incentive structures playing out because many of them believe in the religion, and the secular ones want to have a job, and want the fruit of their career and intellectual life to be tethered to something more than myth.

Moreover there is this classically-human trait where we "believe" something and desperately cling to it even when encountering rather obvious contrary evidence. a So instead, we discard the evidence or come up with some elaborate story where we justify discarding or ignoring it. For example "it's from the devil" regardless of whether it has any substance or not.

Gerald McFarlin My belief in God does not come from Google, nor from belief systems that have no eyewitnesses to their accounts. The only one who has eyewitnesses is the God of Israel and His chosen servant Israel. These eyewitnesses, that the God of Israel declared on Mt.Sinai over 3,300 years ago to over 1.6 million individuals known as the children of Israel all at once heard God and did not see any form. After God spoke of a portion of the 613 commandments, God's eyewitnesses became too fearful. Deuteronomy 20:18 "Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightening flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off." Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." And Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so you may not sin." Isaiah 43:10 "You are My witnesses," says the Lord, "and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no savior." Nobody in the history of the world has ever made a claim that an entire nation claimed that God spoke to them as a whole, all at the same time. And nobody else will until the entire world witnesses the Almighty God of Israel and causes the entire world to tremble and fear. What I find strange and sad at the same time is, your comment suggests that you haven't established any kind of relationship with God, other than the human emotions that are within you, although you don't acknowledge them as such. Because once you acknowledge that there is a God, the God Israel, you begin a relationship with God. Even a Christian achieves this, but unfortunately, not a proper relationship with God, because they instead are kissing God through a pillow case and have a mistress on the side. Big mistake. You, on the other hand, have yet to establish much of any kind of relationship with God, which means you are not getting the necessary nutrition that enriches the body and soul, especially when you need it most. You, instead, are relying on your own thoughts and ideas, as well as others ideas, which means you can't even think for yourself. You have no trust in God, therefore you value information based on others practices, instead of relying on your intuition, your soul, guided by the Creator of all things. Instead of seeking a proper relationship with God, no matter the level of the relationship, you would rather trust in what man thinks, instead of what actually those men had gotten their inspiration from. Because it had to come from somewhere. What you don't realize is, their own ideas where sparked from an original source, which also came from another source and so on, until the actual original source comes back to the Creator, the Maker, the God of Jewish Bible. To go through life without the experience of having God by your side during your life, your family, the deaths of your family, the birth of a child within the family, the trials and tribulations of life, would then be cheating yourself and others around you of understanding fully the meaning of life. The way God intended it to be. God gave us the freedom to experience anything we want, including the consequences for making the wrong choices in life. Through trial and error we learn. But we must also experience death, and the deaths of those around us. Having a proper relationship with the God of Israel, provides comfort and assurance, shelter and protection, unlike any other. When you are right with God, from (gained knowledge of God, repentance and charity) nothing else compares, it then becomes overwhelming and without a doubt that the God of Israel is for real. And guess what. Everyone on earth will experience this, even those like yourself who are obviously in denial. Because everyone at one point in their lives was in denial, even for a split second. Denying God, is claiming that good and evil doesn't exist. That good eventually doesn't overcome evil. That nature and all living things don't have God given instincts to be what they are and do what they do. And that the elements don't follow the commands of God and move the earth or provide to the earth and man. There will come a time when you will call out to God. That's why it's important to establish a proper relationship with God now, before it's too late, and your body, now has become only the soul, and has trouble knowing what to do from the manual God has left behind. Shalom

Gerald McFarlin I'm aware that you rely on false information and have no idea what you are talking about. For example, you cannot claim that you know what it's like to have relations with a woman if you, yourself have never had a relationship with a woman. Instead, all your claims come from other sources that claim that they know what it's like to have a relationship with a woman. But not even the woman you happen to be with. Do you have any idea how nonsensical you sound? Do you even realize that every naysayer throughout the history of mankind was indeed proven wrong? You are so delusional to the point that you even think that having a relationship with God comes from religions and or a book. Sorry to tell you brother, but God and His commands were present way before books were invented, and way before any collective religion was amassed. Otherwise, you would have to explain to me what Cain did wrong with Able? Are you aware of Cain and Able, and the timeframe when this happened? But go ahead, continue to look in all the wrong places. Keep putting yourself through all the rabbit holes until one after another you become more distant from gaining truth. Because they are nothing but dead ends. But I guarantee you, eventually you will be shown the truth. That is, if you never give up. You see, wisdom, true wisdom, comes from those who teach their children well, and who pass the knowledge of God down from generation to generation. Word of mouth, based on their own experiences with God. Hence, Gods eyewitnesses. Deuteronomy 11:18-19 "Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." When you speak of the things you are claiming, it suggests that your parents didn't teach you well, nor did their parents, or neither of you chose to pay attention, not even enough for you to seek answers in all claims, and most importantly, putting them to test. Because, otherwise, all you are doing is satisfying your own ideas, your own neglected thoughts, which is meaningless without God in your life. Return to God all you ends of the earth! Shalom

@@mikesomerset6338 After reading Myth of Persecution by Candida Moss I got an other idea: She pointed out the simularities between the death of Socrates and Eleazar the Schribe on one side and the death of Jesus on the other side. Could it have been the Gospel writers wanted to provided the Christians with a Martyred Cultural Hero that would outstand the Martyred Cultural Heroes of the Greek and the Jews? Socrates and Eleazar died a martyrs death for their high principles, but as non Christians they could not be used to inspire Christians. Therefor the Christian Martyred Cultural Hero died for an even higher principle then the rather mundane ones other the other two, he died for the salvation of all humankind. Where the martyrdeath of Socrates and Eleazar does not pay much attention to the biography of both, the Christan martyrdeath thinks to strenghen the story with all kinds of biographical items that are in their inaccuracy more confusing then clarifying. A mix of OT quotemining, hearsay, borrowed stories and campfire gossip and you could probably build a modest shed with the wood that was needed to crucify all kind of troublemakers named Jesus. @ardalla535
@ardalla535 4 года назад
Good point. Realistically, one wouldn't do that, of course. I remember reading there is something from scripture (Psalms) that says the savior's body shall not experience corruption, so it must be anointed. This also plays into the idea that one must wait 3 days upon death to make sure the person is really dead. Apparently, a human is still recognizable for up to 3 days, then decays very rapidly. The spices had to be applied certainly within the 3 day period. All this sort of avoids the issue of why was the stone rolled into place anyway when Jesus' body was going to be anointed 3 days later? Didn't the women approaching the tomb know that the stone was in place and they would not be strong enough to move it? And, also, didn't Jesus (body and all) immediately descend to the underworld and preach to the dead? So he wouldn't have been there anyway. Of course, the women would not have known that. They were just there to anoint the body. The whole incident, as described, tends to break down the more it is examined. Interesting point though. Was it true, in general, during that time period when someone died they were kept in the home for 3 days to make sure they were dead?

Fitzgerald tries to argue that no historical Jesus existed, but most of the book consists of arguing against the Jesus of the gospels, as though the two are necessarily the same thing. This means that many of his arguments may give some pause to Biblical literalists and fundamentalists, but anyone with a grasp of modern historical Jesus studies will be struck most by Fitzgerald's ignorance of the field and the naiveté of his ideas about who or what the historical Jesus probably was. Arguing that the gospels aren't eye witness accounts or that they contain historical errors might work as arguments against a fundamentalist Christian conception of Jesus (to an extent anyway), but leaves the Jesus of critical scholars entirely unscathed. Vast swathes of the gospels can potentially be shown to be utterly false, but this does nothing to show that there wasn't a historical Jewish preacher as the ultimate point of origin for the later stories. But Fitzgerald seems totally unaware of the work putting Jesus back into his Jewish context done by scholars like Ehrman, Fredriksen, Vermes, Sanders, Allison, Casey, Ludemann and many others, most of whom are not Christians. He does not seem to understand, therefore, that disproving the Jesus of a face-vaulue reading of the gospels doesn't constitute disproving a historical Jesus.

For arguments sake -even if messiah Jesus Christ existed , the gospels were written a even a century after Jesus' estimated year of death, by individuals who never met Jesus, and then were edited or forged over the centuries by unknown scribes with their own agendas.

what about Non-Biblical Sources: Tacitus: A Roman historian who, around 116 AD, mentioned Jesus in his Annals, referring to the execution of "Christus" (Jesus) under Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius. Josephus: A Jewish historian who, in his works "Antiquities of the Jews" (written around 93-94 AD), makes references to Jesus. The authenticity of these references, particularly the Testimonium Flavianum, has been debated, but many scholars believe that, at least partially, they are genuine. Pliny the Younger: A Roman governor who wrote to Emperor Trajan around 112 AD, mentioning Christians worshiping Christ as a god.

@ailbbe

I agree, his whole argument rests on the fact that the evidence we have is mythologised. But that doesn’t automatically mean it was fabricated. Historians generally don’t just look at direct evidence because often there isn’t much. They have to infer from the sources they do have what the like possibility of events were. It is a fact that Jesus became popular shortly after his death, I think Fitzgerald claimed that all the christian sources we have were written “generations” after Jesus’ life, but the letters of Paul were written on 20-30 years after his death (if we assume he died some time around 30ad). Paul talks about a movement of Jesus followers throughout the Middle-East at that time, from that historians infer that Jesus was a real popular religious figure who was probably executed leading to a movement that spread across the mediterranean to Paul who wrote the stories he heard down. The thing non-historians don’t get about history is that it doesn’t always have definite answers, and real historians wouldn’t rely on an absence of evidence to prove that something definitely didn’t happen. There was no evidence for the city of Troy besides in the mythological writings of Homer until it was discovered in the 19th century. It’s always good to be sceptical of anyone claiming to know the absolute truth about ancient history because most of the time the evidence is incomplete or in the case of written documents wrapped in layers of mythology, bias and cultural traditions foreign to us now. Especially be sceptical of a self proclaimed “atheist activist” claiming historians are wrong about Jesus, just as you’d be sceptical of a devout Christian saying the same thing.
@ailbbe
@ailbbe Год назад
@@druidriley3163Fitzgerald’s argument doesn’t actually disprove the existence of Jesus, it just points out the lack of non-christian sources and uses the fact that the New Testament contains fabrication and mythological themes to “prove” that the entire story was dreamt up. While the evidence that Jesus was a real historical figure is admittedly lacking that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be used as evidence. Most written sources historians use have bias, inaccuracies and fabrication. That doesn’t always mean that they are useless sources that can’t tell us something about the past. While the Gospels and Letters of Paul obviously contain inaccuracies and bias toward a mythologised view of Jesus that doesn’t automatically prove that they weren’t talking about a real historical person. He talks about how other religious ideas are provably false and therefore pure mythology, at one point bringing up the story of Moses. The big difference he ignores between Moses and Jesus are that the Books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, etc) first appear in writing 750-1000 years after the time the story portrays, this is much more time for the story to become distorted into fiction through oral retelling than the 20-30 years between the death of Jesus and the first written source (The Letters of Paul). While credible historians like Ehrman don’t accept the possibility of water-walking abilities and resurrection they do accept the possibility of Jesus’ existence as a religious leader who people during or shortly after believed was the Messiah.

But if a man who does not believe the bible story is a better person, has a repentant heart, a charitable nature and seeks the truth, abhors lies etc, then you would say nine of that matters? Even christ said "you will know them by their fruits." Who is of God and who is of the devil. It doesn't seem that most christians even grasp the most salient and relevant spiritual teachings of their savior. Often they are too busy upholding some doctrinal version of the bible and wielding at as a weapon, or standing upon it like a pedestal. I wish I could get to the point in which I viewed Christianity as fantastical. But it’s what I grew up with. Weird Bible verses help. For example, what was mentioned on this show about Mark 4:11-12. This is basically saying Jesus talks in riddles so that outsiders won’t understand in order to fulfill some prophecy, because otherwise they would understand and be forgiven? ! ? Yeah, but that’s what it says. Not sure how some old prophecy is more important then the central, core idea of Christianity. Besides, almost every religion has its own phasing of the golden rule. Meaning, Christianity doesn’t have a monopoly on ethical behavior in any way, shape, or form. In fact, often the opposite.

As you recognize that the case for existence, though not utterly disproven, would never hold up in a court of law, all sorts or realizations begin to take place. It is a process, from that point, but not a long one. And you're right. The inevitable conclusion is that there is no plausible road back, once the journey has been undertaken. This is the quandary that the various clergies, vastly untrained and unprepared for anything else, face now on an almost daily basis. Stay and lie, or leave and die (figuratively speaking). This is why I despise so-called "bible colleges" and "universities." They charge, in some cases, higher rates than full-fledged teaching institutions, but, in the end, provide absolutely nothing in return. All religion, in the end, is reduced to a scam that is only slightly better than a pyramid scheme. It brings me no joy to recognize this.

I gather the offical term for which might be "verbum dei" which up to now I thought meant something more generally liturgical but possibly not. there is no concept of "thinking this stuff thru on your own" rather the latter notion sort of sprang up among lutherans. If the Gospels were invented out of whole cloth, and the Romans and their allies didn't create them, why did the Romans almost never write anything to criticize in depth this dangerous new faith, besides Cestius? If they did, it would explain both the near lack of opposition books. Christianity is Greco-Roman philosophy in a tri-Theistic, Jewish shell. Who but the Romans could have carried out a forgery so large, and intimately acquainted with Jewish tradition, and made it stick? True, Diocletion and to a lesser degree, other emperors afterwards, persecuted them, but Diocletion could have resented the mythology invented by his father and brother, and preferred paganism. Other persecutors not long afterward would have not been from the Flavian dynasty. By contrast, Antonius Pius was also probably a Flavian, and tolerated Christians very well. The symbol of early Christianity wasn't the cross. It was the anchor and dolphin symbology that was also on coins of the Flavians. To Jesus historicists, if Tacitus proves Jesus lived earlier, when was Jesus ever in Jerusalem, during the reign of Nero?

I have seen one. On TV though. It is fascinating. Mohammed was a historical figure, a military leader, who converted people to Abrahamic monotheism and recruited the converts to an army. Zayd ibn Thabit who first wrote the Koran down about 1400 years ago (it was just an oral tradition before that) was overseen by a Committee. The descriptions of places and journeys in the Koran don't tie in with the actual geography of the area so may have been misnamed or mislocated. Many of the events occurred hundreds of years before the Koran was written so that seems plausible. There were several versions before it was written down so there are bound to be inaccuracies. The Angel Gabriel spoke to Mohammed when he was 40 and he died at 60. He packed a lot into those 20 years.

Just like Christianity was institutionalized by Romans/Constantine, same thing happened under the Ummayads & the predominantly Persian Abbasids. The hadiths (canonised about ~200 years later & back projected, no original manuscripts) are full of forgery & polemics from Persian, Jewish & Christian subjects & their counter narratives. Recently, there has been an increase in "sola scriptura Muslims" challenging the validity of the tradition. Even the monarch of Saudi Arabia came forward & said he will be reforming the legal system which is based on these spurious narrations. Eisenman briefly draws parallels with early Jewish "Christianity" of Jerusalem headed by James & the dispersed wilderness camps with Islam. Fred Donner says it was a ecumenical monotheist movement before "Muslim" became separate a group identity. Also, there are scholars in the Muslim world who are decades ahead of what is just being uncovered here in the West. They are limited by the language barrier, poor reach & censorship in many places. It's gonna' open up alot more in the coming decades & from what I've seen it's for the better for everyone involved. Archaeological digs in Arabia are going to challenge alot of narratives about Moses, Abraham, Noah as well. The locals claim they've always known this that they were here once. Fascinating stuff.

Any misunderstanding of such detail doesn't touch the premise of anything regarding the lack of history regarding the Gospels or Christianity. This is a good example of the tangle Christians try to create when writers are going through the claims and doctrine in the Bible itself. I like to preface any discussion of the material by prefacing it with the now undeniable lack of evidence in the entire universe for any god or supernatural cause via astrophysics. There is no evidence for any god means that the discussion of the myth is just that, a discussion of mythology that parades itself as historical fact. As Fitzgerald points out, a flaw in the argument is not evidence for God, nor is a quote inside the Bible proof of Biblical claims. That constitutes circular logic.

It’s accepted by most scholars that Josephus was forged/edited just look it up. Tacitus on the other hand was written 25 years after the fact, and a few scholar question his writings, for example why would he call Pontus Pilatus a Prefect rather than a Procurator which he was at that time ? As for Suetonius he spoke in general about Christians and not Jesus in particular. Now firstly the name Jesus was extremely common during that time so which Jesus are we talking about ? Secondly if there existed a Jesus of the bible he probably was a regular person a little deranged that wanted to start a new religious cult/following, we’ve seen it in the past and are still seeing it today with Evangelicals. Look at it this way if all the extraordinary events described in the New Testament about Jesus were true there would be hundreds of accounts written about him from historians all over Europe and the middle east, but that’s not the case at all, is it ?? And thirdly as for Pontius Pilatus not wanting to crucify Jesus because he could not find any guilt in him, that’s bull ! We know that Pilatus was a ruthless, and cruel man, his main responsibility is keep the peace at all costs, and would not think twice about executing anyone in a heart beat that would create an uprising. You don’t get that position as Procurator of Judea by being a nice person as mentioned in the Bible. I can go on for hours with this….

I personally like the fact that the Bible stories are just allegories. The instance of a " literally true and infallible" word of God is where the absurdity lies. Otherwise most of the emphasis on forgiveness, love, acceptance, etc is not a bad thing. Lets get back to spiritual meanings and whether or not Jesus actually existed isn't relevant

you are very funny, I am born a Jew taught to hate Jesus. How can you hate someone who never existed? In time Jesus revealed His love for me and i repented of my sins and asked Him to be my best friend. I wept when He entered my heart for joy and for sorrow for my past. the point is now Jesus is my best personal friend, but once I was like you yet I never denied the reality of His existence. thanks for your opinion

In the textbook for my very first course on Asian religions (so not Abrahamic) the author claimed Siddhartha Gautama was an actual person, and was mentioned in contemporaneous sources by other groups, and appears to be an actual historical person. There was zero implication that he was supernatural in any way, just that unlike Moses, Jesus, or Heracles he was known to have lived. It never influenced my view of Buddhism (I learned meditation from Rinzai Zen monks, but they never pushed anything but patience on me!) but I now want to know if Siddhartha did actually live roughly as described, a Brahmin Prince. Any sources you can point me to? Edit: No need, I did a quick wiki search to the cited articles, and while buddhism was definitely founded by ascetics at some point before 300bce, there's no evidence of an actual person named Siddhartha Gautama, at all.

Yes while many or mostly all worldly cultural "religions" are embellished with a lot of unbelievable stories, 4999-600bc, the Buddha, Shakyamuni, or Siddhartha Gautama was an enlightened man who ONLY started a SCHOOL for LIVING IN HARMONY by way of MEDITATION, TRUTH, DISCIPLINES, in our daily lives. He DID NOT teach any kind of religion, nor about any gods, or god. Leaving those topics totally up the individuals personal interests. It was the people of BHARAT(India) who deified him as an Avatar of Vishnu, making him just another god out of their thousands. Something that Great Teacher(Buddha) would be shocked to know, since he was against any person, no matter how gifted in abilities, SHOULD NEVER CALL THEMSELF A god. Biggest crime of the ancient Nephilim Cult followers of the ancients and present times.

Great Yogis of the East have performed countless miracles as profound as those attributed to Jesus yet no one here knows about then and they are not reported in the mainstream Westerrn press. Same with the miracles of Bruno Groening and Padre Pio. So why should we expect recording of these events 2000 years ago by traditional authorities when they did not witness them?

I am a great fan of David Fitzgerald and have most of his books. And for the record, I'm a mythicist. However, I would say that his book, Nailed, 10 Christian Myths that show that Jesus Never Existed at All is the wrong title for this book does not disprove a historical Jesus, it simply debunks Christian claims that is made to support a historical Jesus. Which makes it a very valuable book for those interested in counter-apologetics.

@PrestonSartorius If we remove all the supernatural elements, the passages which we know were added later, place all the contradictions in red, remove the bad historical data (the fake census, and Quirinus) including the entire passage of Jesus having a conversation in Greek with Nicodemus (John Chapter 3) and all other disputable passages, what is it we are actually left with? A nobody that was mythicised by Greek speaking Christians? And this still doesn't really prove that he existed. The only passage that gives me pause for thought, is the labour involved in having Jesus born in Bethlehem rather than his parents home village (or hamlet) of Nazareth.
@mephistophelean
@mephistophelean 2 года назад
@PrestonSartorius No and yes! The authors of Matthew and Luke had to have Jesus fulfill Messianic prophecy for according to Micah 5: 1-2 the Jewish Messiah will come from Bethlehem, from the seed of David. And because of this link to the House of David, this is why Matthew and Luke both created a genealogy as well, linking Jesus to the House of David, even though their lineages go through Joseph (according to Christian scripture, isn't a blood relation of Jesus, as Jesus has no earthly father), and the genealogies don't properly match up with each other.
