I can't tell you how much Adam's information has helped me. Our dog was a rescue who was reactive to people and dogs. This is now non existant, and we have a happy chilled dog. Great podcast! 🤩

My god I wish people had to do a mandatory training course when purchasing/rescuing an animal. We have had dogs follow us and their owners are shouting them and the dog totally ignores them, we had a strangers dog literally steal food from my sons hand at a picnic and the owners laugh about it! The animal ends up the blame when its the owners lack of responsibility

Alright, let me preface this by saying: I agree with a lot of Adam's points around dog training and behaviour. His stance on off-lead dogs, dog parks, recall, teaching puppies to calm using a crate is spot on and very helpful advice. I am generally in favour of balanced trainers and totally understand why not everything can just be 'positive reinforcement' overall i think Southend is a good resource doing good things. Where he loses me is when he delves into pseudoscience and personal beliefs and tries to push these as scientific fact. Desexing and the effects of early desexing is not as clear cut as Adam states. It is a highly under-researched area, and from the few studies that have been done, there is a huge discrepancy between the effects on male/female and breed, with some breeds having an extremely negligible effect on health, or none at all. The absolute IRONY of Adam and James blaming 'the majority of behavioural issues' on owners who neuter their dogs early...when James is openly admitting to wanting to breed his dog is just....mind boggling. This is why neutering is so important, the average dog owner should not have the option to breed their dog at their own free will. People like James, who have no idea what they are doing, yet still back-yard breed their dog for stupid, selfish reasons, IS the reason why there are so many dogs with behavioural issues. The irony of James judging people who chose to neuter their dog, yet admitting that he would like to contribute to the problem of overpopulation in dogs is frankly....moronic. I was shocked that Adam, someone who is usually quite forceful with his opinions, didn't call James out on this and tell him to stop being an idiot? Also, just have to point out the irony of Adam, a dog trainer, calling out vets for not 'staying in their lane' whilst in the same breath discussing the effects of hormones on growth and physical development in an attempt to sway people away from neutering. Is this not Adam also not staying in his lane? How is he an authority on this subject? Sure, maybe he can speak to the behavioural effects of neutering (which the science has also said - there is none) but to speak to the health effects is just him acting in bad faith. The majority of vets i've met understand that the issue of early neutering is not clear cut and the science is not settled. I'm not sure why Adam seems to have such strong views on the matter? Some more honourable mentions: James admitting he lets a 5 month old puppy off the lead, takes it to dog parks, then wants to assault other people in the park who's dogs get too boisterous with his dog....Adam not calling him out on being an idiot and taking an off-lead puppy with no recall to a dog park, Adam of course pushing raw food and likening kibble to feeding kids sugar which causes hyperactivity (again, pseudoscience - sugar doesn't cause hyperactivity), Adam yet again shitting on people who medicate their dogs or children and trying to imply ADHD is a made up fantasy condition that is easily fixed with a good diet. This conversation was all over the place and littered with bullshit.

@helenagraham6819 Год назад
@@mfkintoasty6775 It was frustrating to be honest. I feel at times the social media fame has got to Adam's head and given him a bit of a god complex, he's extremely vocal and intolerant with his opinions, of which a lot are just frankly utter bullshit. It's laughable that he talks about staying in your lane, when he never does lol

I started with Southend but became uncomfortable with his training methods, swapped to the likes of MK9Plus and Tails of Connection and Zak George - he also shares so many other awesome trainers too. Would recommend investigating. Adam does get a fair bit spot on but since we switched training methods, we've a happier dog and more responsive engaged dog.
@AinebeautyBlogspot
@AinebeautyBlogspot Год назад
Also, his attitude about internet experts, he's one himself. He's not qualified. I'm not a Susan, I can see the difference in my dog since switching training methods. We don't punish our dog. We've worked with a local behaviourist to better understand the science behind what our dog needs and how to make sure he has his best life.
@dcorkhill07
@dcorkhill07 Год назад
@@AinebeautyBlogspot although he’s got no official qualifications, he’s obviously worked with dogs, successfully, for a long time, he’s not just someone getting online and shouting. Just because somebody is qualified, doesn’t make them better, just means they were able to repeat what was necessary to pass academic exams. As a modern society I believe we’re placing way too much emphasis on qualifications and not enough on experience. Just because somebody is deemed an ‘expert’ doesn’t mean they’re right
@AinebeautyBlogspot
@AinebeautyBlogspot Год назад
@@dcorkhill07 My hope is that folks who qualify learn good quality information that they can share because they understand why dogs behave the way they do. I wouldn't take nutritional advice from an influencer who spends their time researching. I take it from a qualified nutritionist/dietician. We started off our pup with someone that wasn't qualified, their information was out of date and gave bad advice in the end. We started having other issues because we never got to the root cause of the problem and weren't meeting our dog's needs. We've since researched and found a local behaviourist and trained with them. I agree people that have qualifications might be shite too, but if you do your research and find the people that are willing to actually do the proper training, to provide useful resources and learn to understand how each breed might differ etc, the chances are your dog will benefit. Ours has. I did try advice from southend, it definitely wasn't right for our dog. We found someone that knew their shit a lot better and our dog has massively improved. It will stand to our dog for their lifetime. There are better people available on social platforms that do know their stuff a hell of a lot more so than Southend.
@dcorkhill07
@dcorkhill07 Год назад
@@AinebeautyBlogspot great points, I agree that research should be done by yourself on those you wish to take advice from, while trying to remain objective- understanding that just because someone has qualifications, doesn’t mean they’re good, and someone without qualifications must be bad. At the same time just because someone is very well experienced, doesn’t mean they’re good. Analyse their content, and see who you think would be most beneficial to your own situation

I'm following Adam's training advises and i really appreciate his expertise on the behaviour subject. However it seriously bugged me that both James and Adam hypocritically gave out strong opinions in the public on spaying when neither is an "expert", and they just made fun of people who share their views on how dog behaviour should be done. The casually mentioned issue that rescues face is actually a very serious, huge communal issue. In most countries dogs are dumped on the streets causing attacks, spread diseases, huge mismanaged stray population. In the countries where you do not see dogs on the streets, guess how that is accomplished? By murder at large scale. Have you have ever researched the number of dogs that are killed in rescues or at the vets? Have you ever researched the number of dogs that end in rescues from accidental breeding? Milions animals are dying in every country across the world. You can guarantee you will keep your puppy safe, but you can not guarantee that down the line your puppy's new owners will be responsible, or the owners of the litters that puppy will eventually produce, there for adding to the over population and the extremely concerning number of killings. You speak for rescues as if they are some service in the background of society, that helps animals that are dumped, as if your choices do not affect those people who struggle to help these animals, but it does. And these people DO NOT WANT TO DEAL with the consequences of YOUR DECISIONS, but they do it for the sake of the animals. Your decision affects many many other people and animals. The fact is that most dogs in rescues die, rescues can not handle the extremely enormous number of IRRESPONSIBLE owners - who do not know where their dogs are at all times. Breeding should be tightly regulated. For James's next podcast i advise he interviews rescues across the world and ask how this casual breeding affects their life and the lives of the animals who end in their care. Your decisions impact others and the nasty reality that happens away from the public's eye should be brought infront of them to face it! I also recommend that everyone who even thinks about the idea of breeding, to go and volunteer in a local shelter for a year and make a decision only then.

My dog is 18 months and the breeder I got him from said not to neuter till he's at least 2. He's a chocolate Lab. I'll be doing it then because I've had to confiscate cushions n throws out my lounge as he was stealing and humping them! 🙈
@SoCalDoll
@SoCalDoll 8 месяцев назад
Just letting you know something I've learned: the humping is instinctual. This is why even female dogs will hump. It can & will probably still happen even after being fixed. What stops this behavior is redirection & teaching a dog that it's not what you want them to do, basically training them to stop. Hope that helps.

Great podcast. Agree with most of it. One point though, if your dog isn't neutered, keep him/her out of dog parks. Unneutered male dogs are more aggressive and I don't want them mounting my dogs. Men can get the snip, it doesn't emasculate them or affect their hormones. It just means sperm has nowhere to go. If you're gonna claim that's your reason for not neutering him, get the vet to snip the tubes, not remove the testicles.
@anthonydowney6069
@anthonydowney6069 Год назад
Your claim that a vasectomy has "no effects "on a male is wide of the mark. ALL medical surgeries have effects however slight they may be. Saying sperm "just has nowhere to go "is being disingenuous about the realities anatomy. No truly comprehensive and honest surveys have ever been done about the after effects of vasectomies. The psychological benefits that may ensue may mask the physical negatives that very few guys would admit to having had. How did talk of human male vasectomies end up in a debate about dog training?Oh of course now I see what you did there ...
@rinawiththenina2190
@rinawiththenina2190 Год назад
Completely untrue that intact male dogs are more aggressive. Would love you to provide the studies that back this up. In fact, I know of two studies it was found that, contrary to popular belief, spaying and neutering dogs may actually cause an increase in canine aggression. Usually neutered dogs react badly to intact dogs because of the hormones they sense/smell in them. Plus it can be down to a lack of socialisation with intact dogs or simply a bad experience. Who’s to say that neutered dogs aren’t actually the issue? Dog’s are able to mix beautifully in their natural form or they wouldn’t of been created like that. Often it’s actually the neutered dogs mounting/ humping the intact ones! Sounds like your dogs having problems with unfixed dogs is more of a you problem. Which has evolved from them being under socialised with intact dogs, as you clearly have written intact dogs off. Maybe this happened after a bad experience? Which is a real shame. There’s many reasons why people do not neuter their dogs. Mine being 10:29 that my dog is sound reactive, fearful of men& insecure of off lead dogs running up to us. Neutering him when he is already showing these signs of fear, would be stripping the testosterone he needs, to help his confidence in these situations. Probably the only thing fuelling him to manage these fears without using aggression. Under my vets instruction, by neutering him it likely would worsen his fear& escalate it. I’d never heard of this before my current dog. My previous dog was a rescue & already neutered. I have 0 interest in breeding& I’m a strong advocate for rescues. Hopefully this can provide you with a different perspective on intact dogs. I hope you can have more empathy/ be more open minded for reasons why a dog may not be neutered. Their not all monsters!
@AinebeautyBlogspot
@AinebeautyBlogspot Год назад
Our vet advised us that more recent studies suggest not getting your dog neutered for at least a year. We've had no behavioural issues around aggression at all. We meet dogs daily - both new and old friends, no issues. He also doesn't mount other dogs either.
