The one thing that worked for me super well was viewing my home as an airbnb someone would rent out. Recently we went on vacation, and I found myself so relaxed by the cleanliness and no clutter. It made me see my home in different eyes when we came back and I had so much appreciation for my home and motivation to get it cleaned and decluttered. So now when I need motivation I try to make my home be a place I’d pay to stay at for vacation.

Taking a picture for a fresh perspective is a great tip. It works for choosing a “going out” outfit too.

I've decluttered a bunch of knickknacks that I was hanging onto bc my mom gave them to me. I used to think I hated dusting, but what I really hated was having to move all and dust all that stuff that really, in the end, just made my house look so cluttered. The ironic thing is, my mom always told me if I was getting her a gift, no knickknacks bc they collected dust

I've been trying to stick with the OHIO rule: Only Handle It Once. Don't set something down unless it belongs there, assuming that later you'll put it away. Just put it away the first time you touch it. For example, I try to not set dirty dishes on the counter, but rather put them in the dishwasher without setting them down elsewhere. Junk mail gets looked at (briefly) then tossed, rather than set down on the desk.

This is a great video because it's very practical to my situation in life. As much as I am charmed with Marie Kindo, I have to say that I don't think I have the energy to drag ALL of my clothing out to one spot and go through at one time. I get that she's trying to show you that it's too much stuff! But the thought of it is too defeating for me. I like your idea of dejunking in small doses...I also like the practice of not leaving a room empty handed. Thanks for putting this information out.

I agree with a little at a time. Sometimes when you are waiting for something to cook it is easy to go through one draw or cupboard to tidy and declutter. Post we sort straight away. Luckily our children and grandkids have grown up so toys and clothes are not an issue but it used to be. Revisiting places is good too, if you put something on probations as to keep or not a revisit helps you decide. Thanks for your advice.

Special knickknacks live in a corner curio cabinet behind a glass door. All I have to dust there is the cabinet itself. I'm so proud of myself for throwing away some old spices I went through last night while I was cooking. Progress is progress! Thanks for another great video!

Taryn, I recently found your channel and appreciate your original content. I had never heard you could schedule donation pick ups before- just googled it and want to thank you! With a toddler and infant, organizing donation runs have been no easy task 😩 (Last time I drove to a donation center, it was closed.) GREAT suggestion!!! 🙏🏻

I like to keep a decluttering box too and add as I run across items. I like to immediately run unwanted mail through the shredder or into the trash. Sometimes I have time will tell mail, tends to get stacked for awhile 😟. Not fond of that stack! For paper I need to keep I have small plastic drawers marked tax, medical insurance his and one for hers, banking, etc.This works well for us and makes it easier if we are looking for a certain paper.

I love the never leave a room empty handed. This one can be demotivating for me though lol just because my husband is not a cleaner and everytime i come back to the room there is something or twice as much new stuff that wasnt there before 🤯

80%! Good grief that's a lot. Hard to imagine I could get rid of an additional 80% of my stuff. I guess it depends on where you are in your decluttering journey how much more you can part with.

I deal with paper clutter every day. When a bill comes in, I immediately pay it and shred it. When receipts come in, I immediately scan it and shred it. Paper gone!

Receipes are _very_ important. I write a book about household expenses. And I need the receipes to know exactly how much money in which category goes.

Haha the kitchen has enough problems without adding paper clutter to it!

If you take a photo of a potentially cluttered area and then flip it (left to right) you will have a fresh view of the area and a new hopefully more objective perspective.

So a problem I have is making decisions about clothing I have to donate. There are several places for several kinds of items. It takes me time to organize. Should I just haul it down to Goodwill when I know that other specific kinds of organizations are looking for specific kinds of things? What about all those bottles of shampoo and conditioner, etc. that I didn't like? ARGH.

Regarding knickknacks, no one will want the tchotchke from your 1985 trip to Hawaii, or niece’s wedding reception favors. Those items are only meaningful to the people who experienced the events. Same goes for the dozens of photos people subject their friends to when returning from a trip - ugh. Pick a few photos with interesting stories behind them, then move on!

I sort our mail in the garage when I bring it from the mailbox. I throw junk mail into the recycling bin before I get into the house.

Thanks for this RU-vid video. I am decluttering slowly. I decluttered my reusable shopping bags that I never use and after watching one of your decluttering videos, you mentioned to put your donation items in them and donate them that way. A great way to reuse unwanted bags, thanks 👍.

Great tip regarding the kids artwork on kitchen cabinets. I shall be rearranging their pictures to insides of cabinet this evening to help improve my kitchen vibe 😊
