Over the last couple of decades I've relied primarily on ether Quark or inDesign for most of my word processing. But today you've opened me up to a whole new app that is as much featured rich as my old stand-bys. Perhaps the Pages features weren't there in the past for me to even consider, but you've opened my eyes to Pages and all that it can do. Plus I got tired of paying so much money for Adobe and Quark features that I just don't need or want to pay anymore. Thank you so much.

Whoa, really good one today. Love it! As Pages can be a little tricky with a lot of functionality "hidden", this brought a lot of info out of the shadows and in to the light. Thanks!

I have long held to the theory that it pays to create a practice document and then just "noodle around" in a given program to see what you can discover. Or...you can watch Gary's helpful tutorials! Thank you! 😊

Also, keep in mind that there is world of difference between everyday formatting and professional, such as most professionally produced books use either space between paragraphs OR first-line indent, but not both. My go to site for all things typography is “Practical Typography”, maintained by Matthew Butterick. He is also a source of reasonably priced fonts with a generous licensing arrangement you can use.

The Format sidebar in Pages has so much power, but it can be confusing every time I try to do something. This one is full of "A-Ha!" moments, bookmarked! Thanks Gary.

I would love to see a video from you how to do bibliography management and formatting in Pages 😃
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
I think people use EndNote for that. I'm not the person to do a tutorial on this since I've never used EndNote and I don't create the sort of documents that would need bibliographies.

How to force a line break in a paragraph where you’re using “Space After” without hitting the Return key (which would give you an unwanted line space)? Use Shift Return.

Hi Gary and thanks for excellent videos as always! Have you made any videos or series about how to record videos such as the ones that you post? I am an ESL Teacher and would love to learn how to record/edit an instructive course introduction video for my distance students. I know the basics of iMovie, but what do you use to record yourself and your screen at the same time? How do you put yourself at the bottom of the screen like that? Thanks in advance!

Very useful as always, Gary. Question: is there a way to keep lines on the same page using Pages for iPad? I wish Pages for iPad’s format side car had the same Style, Layout, and More buttons as the Mac version.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
Not sure what you mean by "lines on the same page." You can set an element like a line to be "Stay With Page" or "Inline" as you like. Play around with the options.
@marcboxerman291
@marcboxerman291 Год назад
@@macmost I meant using the “keep lines on same page’ option to prevent a page break within a paragraph, as you demonstrate at around 7:35 in your video. I can’t find a way to do that in the iPad version.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
@@marcboxerman291 Oh, lines of text not line design elements. I don't know where to find it in the iPad version. Maybe it isn't an option.

Export to and send a PDF
@WeberBaker
@WeberBaker Год назад
There are several formats for export. PDF has been mentioned. Word, RTF, even image are among the choices.
@zobzob2010
@zobzob2010 Год назад
By 'open', I assume you mean editable (other people can edit the document and return it to you for further editing). If you're writing a simple document (no images, columns, page layouts that change from landscape - horizontal - to portrait - vertical), the simplest way is to export the document as a rich text format file. This is a basic format text editors can read. It should preserve fonts and their attributes (bold, italics, etc.). I think comments, footnotes and things like text boxes are lost. If you know the other users have either Microsoft Word or OpenOffice (or LibreOffice), export your document to Word and ask the other users to save as a Word (.docx) file. You can reimport their files into Pages. In Pages, the export command is under the File menu > Export to > Word... However, if by 'open' you meant 'can be read, but not edited by other users', your safest best is Export To > PDF... This is the best option when sending to people using tablets and smartphones (which may not have text editing features). Hope this helps.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
Export/Share as a PDF. Same for any app. Not everyone has Word either. PDF is the universal format for reading/viewing documents. Create your document in Pages/Word/Etc and distribute it as a PDF.

@@macmost I have a document I’m working on about my ancestry. It is about 55 pages. I’d like to turn it into an eBook for publication. Thanks for the tips on sections. I found your videos on that and have been watching them. Very helpful. Love your channel. Look for your posts everyday.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
@@shutterbug49 Wonderful! Try exporting as ePub and see what messages you get and how it then looks in the Books app or some other ePub reader. That's the best way to start.

I am sure you have mentioned it in another video, but what you missed in this one is how to create a new paragraph style from an existing paragraph style.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7t9A_sYkAEY.html (just set a paragraph to the existing style, then change it, then add that style).
@jcinaz
@jcinaz Год назад
@@macmost Try creating a new paragraph style as Numbered or Indented. If you can do it, let us know how. As far as I know, you can only create new paragraph styles by changing something like font face, size, color, or line or paragraph spacing. I cannot create a new style by changing Bullets, Numbering, Indent, or Drop Cap. I submitted this as a feature request to Apple years ago and they are ignoring it.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
@@jcinaz Bullets and numbered lists have their own styles called List Styles. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7t9A_sYkAEY.html
