Something I added to my tool box this year that has been a game changer is a pair of serrated edge shears/scissors. The serrated edge stops slippery fabrics from moving so the fabric has a nice crisp cut instead of jagged edges. Another gift idea is a sewing class...like yours 😉

So those are awesome gifts ! To up you ironing, I suggest a CLAPPER ! This is a game changer for crisp professional creases and pleats. It also helps to « fix mistakes » in many types of natural fabrics. I have so many little gadgets in my sewing arsenal ! I am a gadget girl ! I would have to show you pictures as I don’t know all the names ! Here is a list of objects I own to make my life easier: rotary cutters: one for fabric and one for paper (I trace a lot of patterns onto paper), carbon paper, punches, awls, measuring wheel (another game changer), sewing allowance magnets to put of scissors, measuring gauge, fine black tape (to design on my dressform, like Project Runway !), pelican scissors, paper notcher, all types of wheels (from dull to spiny), a makeup brush (to clean the serger) AND pattern weights ! I am sure I have forgotten something but I do a lot of patterning and adjusting paper and everything helps me a lot ! Oh and I recently found this app Ibis Paint on which I can model my designs to check put the fabric mixes ! It is amazing ! Ok, bye for now !

You are beyond your years young lady, so informative and entertaining! Sewing can be frustrating because there is so much to learn. It seems to me that we need to learn new skills with every project mostly because they require working with different tools from sewing machines to the seam rippers. Thank you!

I have the Brother ST4031 serger and I love it! I just got it for my birthday and so far it’s been wonderful! I went with that over the 1034D just because I figured the “strong and tough,” would be useful. I haven’t really stress tested it yet, but it has been able to easily go through multiple folded over seams.

I have a dress form and I padded it up in places where it needed it (it was a cheap one) to fit my measurements and used an old high neck t-shirt to cover it with. Works like a charm. I am wanting a serger so that is next on the list. The serger is the last item I feel I need besides a quality pair of cutting shears. I love those clips and use mine for hems and holding things together when I sew. Great video Angelina!

Have most of the items on your list, gifted myself those clips last year. For some unknown reason, I never received sewing related items for Christmas....I guess my folks figured that I would get it myself. I definitely need to get that flexible ruler. I lost one and that blade seam ripper when I was doing quilting seminars at the library. Those scissors and striplights are enticing!! I am so with you regarding irons....because I do drop irons...I did have an $80.00 iron once and didn’t make it past one year so I stick to $25.00 iron and below ones...Have a good holiday!

So glad you posted this! Those clips are a game changer! And once you get a serger you use it so much more than anticipated. For those wanting a dressform but without the dollars, get some dollar store duct tape, an old t shirt and make a duct tape dress form. I'm just finishing mine up and can't believe how close the measurements work out to be. Perfect option! No, but better than nothing.

Hi Angelina- I just downsized for a year I’m guessing and one tip it’s kind of a no brainer, but get the clear 59 liter I think they are sterilite bins. As many as possible! I got them for less than $5 each at Walmart. If they are the same size and clear you will be amazed how you’ll play Tetris with them, yet how much crazier it could be. I am finally living with less bins and since storage was my mission?-Tip#2- think outside the box with storage. Every piece of furniture must contain maximum storage. A nightstand with three drawers vs. one. A cabinet without glass to hide clutter. I got an inexpensive bed with drawers built in. You get the idea. Offer up has been a lifesaver too! I furnished my place for around $400, nicer furniture than I had before! ( I came home from abroad with nothing). Good luck and God bless to you and you kids!

I have the same serger & the Brother coverstitch (think serger but no cutting blade) that I “accidentally” ordered from Amazon. It does the professional serged hems & gives a neater appearance on a lot of other things. I really haven’t discovered everything that it does. My serger died a few years ago & I wanted a new one this summer for sewing. I somehow ordered the more expensive hemmer, but I decided that I would just keep it after using it a few times. It’s actually harder to thread than the serger!

Last year I gifted myself the world's best tape measure. Australia has used the metric system for more than 40 years yet it is difficult to find a tape measure that is only metric. While in France I found the world's best tape measure. It is only in centimetres/millimetres, which ever end you use one side starts from zero and it is colour blocked every 10cm. I love it so much I bought several, giving some away as gifts. Thank you France!

Attn. MissBrooks. Loved that old show, ‘Our Miss Brooks’ w/ Eve Arden. You should have a place to add another thread spool. The thread holder should have come w/ your machine. Then you thread both threads through the machine and separate them at the needle. One thread in each needle. You should always check you manual, if you don’t have one, you can always find it on the internet. Search your machine make and model a If your machine can use a twin needle, the instructions should be there. BTW: make sure you have the correct throat plate on your machine. If the hole is too small, you will break your needle on the first stitch. Turn the wheel by hand before you hit the pedal. It’s easier than it seems. Good luck.

Thanks so much!! 😁 It's an NYX shade. When I looked it up to buy more I realized that they don't make it anymore. 😭

Also you need a ‘clapper’. It’s a wood block that you put over the HOT FABRIC you have just ironed and it sets the ‘press’ or crease. It does this by quickly absorbing the steam from the fabric. Also, a server it one of the best purchases you will make. You never just pull out the thread, you tie it to the old thread and SLOWLY pull it through until it gets to the needle or the strike plate. But sergers a totally worth buying.
