RU-vid won't let me comment on your video, for some reason 🤷‍♀️ but... I would feel tempted to convert one of your paintings, or a part of one, into embroidery. As you're in the UK, and it's easy to get real wool there, I would even buy some thin wool yarn, maybe even natural/handdyed wool for the stitching, to replicate the structure of paper and paint... As it has structure, and it doesn't have the even dye... 😊 ❤

I’m sure you’ve heard of “Maude Lewis”, the Canadian version of grandma Moses. She was a very arthritic, tiny woman who lived in a one room cottage in Nova Scotia, and sold her paintings on the side of the road. She painted everything in her house too, with her childlike flowers. Her books are very inspiring. I’m sure you would like her work too.

I live in Pennsylvania, have for most of my life. In all the places I've lived, the items used to store pins and needles were called pin cushions. All sorts of designs and types are made. I love sewing paraphernalia, especially needle books and pin cushions. Thanks for posting the books and your suggestions for alternatives!

I could imagine they use as sketchbook covers they’re absolutely beautiful, I was in hospital about a year or two ago for an extended period of time, and during Covid you couldn’t have any visitors and it was quite boring and an art therapist that made a little packets of things to do in. One of them was embroidery, and it was a one colour mandala. I fell in love.

I like all the things you mentioned. I started tole painting back in the 80s when I didn't think oil painting was within my reach though, my ultimate goal. Tole Painting then had all the farmhouse-type patterns sort of like Grandma Moses' work. I loved embroidering and cross-stitching as a child and sewing. I still do all these things and have stayed pretty much in all these motifs plus, abstracts. I feel like I was born into the wrong era, too. 😊 Thank you for sharing your inspiration books. ❤

I loved the idea, you first mentioned in Patreon, about only taking one element of the image rather than the entire image. Love it! Also, I have definitely looked at these types of books for inspiration in my sketchbook. The simplicity of the folk art style really lends itself to fun sketches.

I have no book recommendations, but I think you might like Maud Lewis. She is a Canadian Folk artist. Sally Hawkins portrayed her in the movie Maudie a few years ago. Added artist and book information : I think you might enjoy The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. Emily Carr was an artist that created work around the same time and sometimes she exhibited with the group. I think you would like her work, dark and spiritual. I do also love looking at Children's books with beautiful illustrations such as Trying by Kobi Yamada and Elise Hurst. A beautiful book with a beautiful message.

It’s called a pincushion in Canada as well 😊. I love Blackbird Designs and folk art patterns / samplers! Prairie Schooler no longer makes new cross-stitch patterns, but their charts are still sold at various places; they have cute Halloween designs as well as some designs with houses. Country Cottage Needleworks also has lots of little patterns with houses, but they are more “cutesy” than “spooky” 😅. I have collected a lot of older styled samplers over the years and have far too many shelves of cross stitch books and charts. Even when I’m not in the mood to stitch, I just enjoy flipping through everything and looking at the designs. The last book you shared was beautiful!

One of my sons gave me this book for Christmas, "Natural Palettes: Inspiration from Plant-Based Color". Palettes like Sugarcane Husks, Tansy, Pomegranate Rinds. Each palette has four colors in big rectangles on a page and info about the plant on the facing page.

one of my favourite inspirational sewing books is "Bloomsbury Needlepoint from the tapestries at Charleston Farmhouse" by Melinda Coss, closely followed by the astonishing collection of French embroidery projects from magazine "100 ideas" in "The Embroidery Book: over forty beautifully simple projects for you and your home" published Guild Publishing London, 1989 - similar ideas in "French Style Embroidery 100 ideas" edited Jan Eaton 1987.

Great inspirational book collection. My go to vintage books are Janet Marsh’s Natures Diary published 1979, Collins Guide to the countryside published 1984 and The Big Book of Decorative Painting by Jackie Shaw published 1994 (Folk Art). My treasured vintage book is The Technique Watercolour Painting by L. Richmond and J Littlejohns published 1930. I too love inspirational books.

Thanks for showing such wonderful books. I don’t do any sewing but still really enjoyed seeing the books as the patterns are so beautiful and inspiring. Loved the vintage drawing books and am going to look for them. The Grandma Moses book is really nice. I love her work and remember, as a child, having a book of “The Night Before Christmas” illustrated by her. If you like her work you should look up her great grandson, Will Moses. His work is very similar in style and just as inspiring. My sister just recently found two beautiful framed prints of his in a thrift store 😊. Would love if you did a video that included your Observer’s books. Or do you already have such a video? I’ve looked at some for sale online but they don’t seem to ever include many pictures of the inside of the books and the shipping is very high from the UK to America. Thanks.

Just ordered those two vintage how to draw books so thanks for the recommendation. I love vintage illustration, and I agree that much contemporary illustration is very similar. I remember having a drawing instruction book called "Lively drawing" when I was a child in the 60s, which had a big influence on me, but I can't seem to find it now.

Thank you for sharing these books. Have you tried charting your own art work? I believe there are computer programs for doing this. I love the Zakka book and all the motifs, especially the trees. Some years ago I collected vintage embroidery transfers and some books. The really early ones are very art deco in design and simplistic style, a bit like the Japanese book. I still look at the transfers, but haven’t used any of them yet. I know exactly what you mean about the art cloning problem on the internet. I suppose historically there’s always been a tendency to copy styles that are popular or fashionable, but with the internet it’s more so with everything being shared online. I love the folk art, naive style too. 😊
