@@CallanElliott while i would agree that a navy can't exist without a society, i disagree that such things are irrelevant. the society of protoss as a whole does not mean that the society of the protoss fleet in specific shares the same flaws. think of the nordic peoples during the viking age. they were herders with a relatively democratic society that tried to help out the unfortunate. the navy part of their society however was very aggressive and violent. the two were very different in general.

The dude does not know that protoss fleets are crewed with less people so in a grand scale of things the protoss would have like a thousand carriers with more than 10 crew per ship. And not to mention their hangars can hold pheonixs and arbiters plus according to Diablo III post carriers are equipped with plasma charges for punching enemy formations If you add the Mothership to the equation well you get your enemys trapped in space time bubbles and some blackholes.

In StarCraft lore the protoss actually gave you jobs according to your skill and natuaral ability and personal fame was aknowledge. And the individual does not seek fame but pride in his own works. They are more motivated than you said. Their warriors would happily died in battle.

A lot of the problems with rating Starcraft factions compared to others is that their units don't make a lot of sense because they're simplified for gameplay reasons. Carriers can't have point defense guns because that would make them more complicated, Battlecruisers can't carry strike craft and mount sort of general purpose point defense weaponry, that sort of thing... not to mention that this is a universe that has a sniper rifle in it that can kill a battlecruiser in two hits if you take the campaign missions as 100% cannon, which I consider more... cannon embellished for gameplay reasons. Likewise the factions probably have more unit varieties than is implied through the gameplay alone that just don't make it in because starcraft's balance would be worse for it. It's a story that has to take liberties to allow for gameplay, and that's okay.

Here is one I can weigh in on due to experience with the Protoss. - The Protoss value individual skill and craftsmanship. If you happen to be really good, you get some accolades. One of your points is ill-conceived, that one. - Their main enemy, the Zerg, may be budget Tyranids, but they are no less dangerous or wily. The Zerg evolved many forms to deal with certain threats. The Scourge are known as Carrier Killers, as well as 'anything flying killers'. If you have an air force and the Zerg deploy Scourge, well, you may wish to rethink your strategy, and the Protoss often do that where the Zerg are concerned. - Their robots are a mixed bag, so I'll let this one slide. - Since we are including Legacy of the Void, some of your points are now not as relevant. The Nerazim are back in the fold, the Purifiers are equal partners. The Taldarim, well...They're weird. As long as you don't mess with them, they will most likely not mess with you. (The Taldarim leader is voiced by Q, so he's cool in that respect.) - You should have included shields as a flaw as the Terrans are well accustomed to fling EMP charges. That's only one race, but still a flaw. All that being said, I still think as a cohesive force the Protoss do rank decently high. They are not OP by any measure, but I'm not looking at OP potential. I'm looking at the realm of what is reasonable. With Amon, they were forced to change; the Khala was a liability, and the Nerazim rightly could be smug about saying that now. Perhaps they'll learn not to shun that type of non-conformity ever again.
@harrypascoe1751

also destroying the psy matrix only slowed down the armada a few days at most so they dont rely on it as much as you think, they can still hyperspace but it is slower without it. my reasoning is that because of the amount of zerg and protoss on aiur during lotv artanis probably wanted to free them quickly to make finishing amon quicker and less costly and the armada was said to be "across the korprulu sector' when the daelaam attack aiur but the whole fleet was back in time for the final battle.

@345635356
@345635356 5 лет назад
Mark Zimmerman the Yamato cannon is essentially a nuclear detonation contained within a field and then shot at a target like a projectile. I'd wager that attack is so powerful it would even be lethal to 40K ships. It does, however, require considerable energy to use and some charging time, and Protoss/Terran ships can evade it by doing a well-timed micro-jump. However, if the shot hits, its guaranteed to either cripple or outright destroy an enemy ship, unless said ship is Protoss and fully shielded of course, in which case it zaps the shield and in most cases damages the ship, letting the fast-firing turrets on the Battlecruiser do the rest of the work.

the channel itself seems leftist thinking anyway, so no surprise on the "women mistreated' bit. Also if you read the books (they're good) you find there are more females and other intersting facts that points out that just because the video game's main story line didn't show them... didn't mean they are there. Just like the small population thing.. umm.. no. Also the fact that the cyborg machines is a flaw...uuum.. no. They found the corpse of great heroes who have won many battles before butthen failed in one. If they are able to bne rejuvenated (their brain is still living) they will place their brain into a machine so they can keep a venerated warrior on the front lines. Both in game and in the books/comics this is considered both a blessing and a curse as it means they are forever marked as having lost once, but also still able to fight for AIUR. This is why you'll see protoss put into machines being FAR MORE deadly and take more risks as this second death is seen as freedom from a curse, and if they survive, they have regained their honour from the 'lost' honour from their first death.

Protoss abilities have no connection to the Warp (Protoss are psionic, but they aren't 'psykers' in the meaning of the term as it is employed in the 40K fiction). @@krautkopf4101994 Up to a point, but there is no suggestion that Protoss abilities draw energy from any other reality like the Warp, but instead do so from their physiology, possibly pooled as a collective, which seems similar to but distinct from the Khala. If we transplant the Protoss in to the 40K universe, or create a hypothetical were all the rules of both realities apply in the same place, then the mental discipline of the Protoss would certainly help them maintain their mental balance when exposed to the insanity of the Warp, but their abilities don't work in a way that would let them command its energies as a Psyker could, just as a 40K Psyker couldn't interact with the Khala, even if they were telepaths, because the Khala works in a very specific fashion unlike the abilities of 40K Psykers.

I have to digress with several of your points: Point 2: At the end of the LOTV campaign the Protoss head towards a new Golden Age where the Templars, Nerazim and Purifiers are united as one. Only the Tal'darim refuse to join the alliance and head towards their own part of the galaxy, but they leave peacefully and even allow some members to join the new Protoss. Point 3: You contradict yourself here. "The Psionic Matrix is a flaw because if destroyed everything shuts down, yet the Golden Armada was only delayed after the main source was destroyed..." . While many buildings require it to function, all ships posses some form of "long range connection" to it. Otherwise it would have been impossible for protoss vessels to even explore the space in the first place. Point 5: Lack of skilled crew members? Do you know Protoss Zealots train for DECADES to be the "front line soldiers"? It is only logical all crew members train, at least, as long as Zealots or even longer than them to operate the Protoss spaceships. The key aspect of the Protoss is "Quality>Quantity". They are few, but you can bet they are damn good at everything they do. Point 7: That is true, but again you seem to ignore the LOTV campaign where the Protoss accept change and start taking steps towards a better society in the future. Point 8: Why is this even a point? Didn't you just show Selendis from the Templar? Point 9: Robots rebelling against them? You ignore, again, the LOTV campaign where The Purifiers join the Daelaam (new Protoss alliance) as equals to the Templars.This is a major point that further solidifies their new Golden Age. Point 10: How do they fare against other than the Zerg? They have waged war against several Terran factions... one can argue the Inmortal is a direct response to the powerful Terran Siege Tank. There are only 3 races in this universe so... that isn't technically "their fault".
@stewartb1019
@stewartb1019 5 лет назад
Actually, there are canonically many other races the Protoss have fought, but we only have canon information about one of them: The Kalathi, who "fought" the Protoss a couple centuries before the events of the game. The Kalathi were so severely slaughtered that they ended up back in the Stone Age, barely any Protoss casualties. The Protoss looked at the outcome and decided they didn't need anything as powerful as the Colossi after the war, and so the Colossi were deactivated.

Advanced psychic abilities, sophisticated technology, a refined warrior culture, no known association with the hated Dolphin menace - as Xeno scum go, not bad at all, and deserving of a warrior's death in battle instead of being wiped from existence by the indiscriminate annihilation of Exterminatus. Given the Imperium's stance on aliens, such high praise is but rarely conferred on even the least deviant of non-Humans.

@@345635356 Leaving aside all talk of Exrterminatus and Xeno scum for a (very short) moment, I think the Imperium could have the kind of watchful alliance in some circumstances with the Protoss that it does with the Eldar. We know that Guiliman is less xenophobic than most Imperial humans from 40K, having a fairly positive (though not what you would call trusting) relationship with Yvrainne, and generally being more concerned with ensuring humanity's survival than being obsessed with wiping out species like the Eldar or the Tau on a general point of principle, and Guilliman effectively runs the show in the Imperium now.
@345635356
@345635356 5 лет назад
@@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 I'd argue they'd do better with the Protoss, since the eldar are too proud for their own good while the Protoss have abandoned that attitude in favor of a more open-to-help aproach, considering they only killed the overmind and survived the battle of aiur because they had Terrans fight with them tooth and nail to the end. Guillamen might even find the Protoss to be able to help fight the psychic fight against the demons. Maybe even close the warp rift on terra that the emperor has been fighting to keep open. My biggest curiosity is what happens when the different factions of Protoss encounter the warp. Would the Khalai be corrupted, or would the dicipline and experiance of the Khala alow them to be somewhat resistant to corruption? What happens when the void energies of the Tal'darim and the Nerazim clash with the warp? Would the protoss create "warp wielders"? Would the psychic potential of the protoss become a concern for the demons?
@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954

@@345635356 Given the bad experiences the Protoss have had with Khala corruption in recent times, I suspect they would prudently want to stay as far away from the Warp as they were able. Amon was a nasty piece of work, but he was nowhere near as powerful as one of the Chaos Gods. If the Ruinous Powers once got their meat hooks into the Protoss, there would be no real way of reversing the process. It is not as though you can kill the Ruinous Powers like Kerrigan killed Amon. I wonder if the Protoss would be immune to the Shadow in the Warp? Since even non-psychic humans often start to go mad due to the whispering on the periphery of their senses the Shadow causes, it is possible any sensitive telepath might be vulnerable, even without Warp based powers. How would that interact with Protoss psychology and mental discipline? Could they mitigate the affects? How might it effect their psychic power nexus and so their technology?

I noticed this too in all honesty. Some flaws I'd like to add -Each individual Protoss ships are incapable of targetting mutliple targets at once (Blizzard did a big dummy by tying lore into game mechanics), making them too specialized. -No frontline/"battleship" of some kind, making them poor at close ranged combat -Has poor air support capabilities - glassing and planet cracking does not count as support -The entire fleet/Golden Armada is practicaly left for a single tribe's responsibility (Auriga Tribe). If Auriga decides to secede/rebel, the whole fleet goes with them.

Both Purifiers and Khalai are easy prey to Chaos Corruption!
@345635356
@345635356 5 лет назад
@@christiandauz3742 I'm not sure about that one... sure, I can see why chaos would corrupt them easy, but at the same time the Khala means that they have to keep emotion in check so as to not "overload the system" so it would be hard to corrupt a Protoss without the rest of the Khalai purging the corruption. You'd need a Demon Prince or Chaos God to completely corrupt the Khala, at which point Protoss will sever themselves from it as they did with Amon. Then there's the issue that the Protoss are psionically very very fucking powerful, probably more so than the average Eldar. They could be powerful enough to present a real threat to demons. My main curiosity is what would happen if a Tal'darim or Nerazim fought a warp spawn, as in what happens when Void energy clashes with Warp energy? Could these factions learn to use the Warp in the same way they do the Void? Its an interesting question.

The Eldar would have no problem beating the Zerg even in the smaller numbers of the Protoss To the Eldar, Zerg are babies compared to a single Tyranid Splinter Fleet (Which has thousands of Ships and TRILLIONS of Tyranids!) Thanks for not snubbing StarCraft as sci-fi channels are want to do. I am, however, annoyed at your mispronounced words from the lore; these words are voice acted in the games, so someone who had played the game has no excuse. Also, the Kala is not a religion, as is often misconstrued (this may have been retconned, if so; my bad) but rather it is the actual psionic matrix itself; the literal unified consciousness of the entire species (which the Dark Templar avoid by cutting their tendrils), kind of like in Avatar, this matrix allows for a very real afterlife as the individual persists within it after death, and it is also how individuals are resurrected inside robotic Dragoon armors.

I'd actually argue that the Terrans have a better-designed fleet than the Protoss. I mean a Carrier is good when working with other ships and all (that's where the Protoss fleet shines, when you put a bunch of them together to cover each other's strengths and weaknesses), but it's practically defenseless on its own, while a single Battlecruiser will give any opponent a hell of a fight, win or lose. Hell, the Zerg Leviathans are a better designed "warship" than most Protoss capital ship.
@seancarroll9849
@seancarroll9849 5 лет назад
True, but I do love the variety of craft at the Protoss' disposal when mixed properly. Corsair (ground suppression), Tempest (long range bombardment), Scout (multirole fighter), Arbiter (specialized warfare), Mothership (an outright combat vessel itself), Shuttle (transport), Warp Prism (transport and warp zone), Phoenix (air superiority), Void Ray (pinpoint beam attack), Oracle (specialized recon craft), Carrier (Interceptors galore), Observer (cheap stealth recon)....Even the freaking 'Spear of Adun' Arkship at the center of the formation for C&C. An entire army and fleet can warp in without a moment's notice. (Yes, I play stinking 'toss.)

I am pretty sure this is only true gameplay wise, not lorewise. If I remember correctly, lorewise a carrier would not lose to a standard battlecruiser, the hyperion sure because she is a beast, carriers are also more heavily armed lorewise.

The colossi fell out of favor because they were a dedicated fighting machine, and the Protoss had become a society largely of industry (think Japan during the Meiji restoration). While the Protoss honored their worriers, the use of machines with literally no other use but murder had fallen out of favor (personal weapons seem to have been the exception). The Zerg were such a massive threat that those horrifying machines were dusted off and rolled back into production.

Weakness N° 10 isn't really fair though. To those that don't know, the Xel'Naga is the Starcraft equivalent to a hybrid between an Old One and a Chaos God, coming from the Void, a parallel universe made of energy (similar in some ways to the Warp). When Amon, the evil Xel'Naga tried to invade the Starcraft Universe to purge it and replace all life with things in his image, the 3 main races (lead by the Protoss) first kicked his ass 3 ways to sunday in their dimension, then went to the Void to kill his ass in his home turf (imagine the Eldar race of 40k uniting, pooling their tech in to warp shielding, then charging in to the Eye of Terror to kill Slaanesh in the Warp itself with a little help from their own gods, and maybe the Imperium and the Tyranids/Orks. That's what the Protoss did in the face of a new, godlike enemy). What this shows is that the Protoss are adaptable motherfuckers (especially with the support of the other two races) and are willing to forge alliances of all kinds, sacrifice anything, and go to some very creative lengths to archive victory.

to be fair as someone said, the society itself does cause issues with the fleet. But on the same token, they didn't do research nor included books/comics that pointed out things like there are far more than what we see in Sc 1 and 2 in population, Carriers do in fact have point defenses, and that the reason they use robots is to compliment their numbers and lower their overall losses in wars. Because loosing 10000 robots and 200 members of the species is far better to have happened then to loose 10,200 members of the species.

She's not too prevalent in Legacy of the Void because (spoiler alert) she spends most of the time corrupted and possessed by Amon, but the one who became Executor after Artanis(/the player-character in BW) is Selendis, a female, which means the supreme commander (or 2nd in command if you count Hierarch Artanis) of the Khalai Protoss' military is female. That said, females in the Khalai military do appear to be few and far between among frontline troops anyway, though that may be more of just a gameplay thing. There are a handful of other female leaders you run into like Praetor Talis in the LotV prologue campaign.
