One of the things that really got me into Jazz was the sound of the chromatic jazz licks. This is such a huge part of the Jazz sound, especially from Bebop and beyond.
In this video, I am going to show you 10 examples of some great sounding Jazz licks with lots of chromaticism used in different ways: Passing notes, Enclosures, Shifting Patterns, Chromatic interval melodies and more Atonal or completely far-out ideas.
The examples are borrowing from people like Charlie Parker, Doug Raney, Pat Metheny, and Herbie Hancock.
The PDF of the examples is available on Patreon including one with the analysis.

the ideal 10th is good,it sounds more out of regular and usually appears in some more modern bebop.

Hey Jen's, thanks for another great video lesson. There is one chromatic line that sounds amazing and has me baffled. It is George Benson's solo on Jimmy Smith's OFF THE TOP. He starts playing eighth notes, then plays two ascending arpeggios in eighth note triplets followed by a descending chromatic line that seems to be straight chromaticism that goes on forever. It is so clean and smooth, but so fast that it's difficult to copy or even get the essence of a useable concept. This solo is tied with his solo on STELLA BY STARLIGHT as my two favorites. That's saying a lot, because almost everything he plays amazes me. I think Rodney Jones has a RU-vid video on this type of chromatic line and mentions George Benson, but I'm still not good at this and would like to add it to my skill set. Would love to see your take on this. Love your channel!

Jens, chromaticism is ***exactly*** what has drawn me to jazz as well. At my age, I don't know that I will ever master the genre as you have but I can use your concepts to enhance my playing and sound "jazzy." Great lesson. One of your best.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this format of video! I know that a lot of your material is focused on broader topics, but having videos from time to time that just have a couple of interesting licks with analysis is a great variance. I always appreciate your content, Jens, and always push you as a resource for other players. Keep it up, and thank you!

Hi Jens, if your goal is to educate your followers(students), wouldn't it be nice if you played one or two(georbe Benson lick or whatever) interesting lick just in all 12 Keys? other wise they all got vey Virtuose in |Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 , of course you mentioned it several times to do that but we know how lazy beginners are, saying sometimes is not enogh....My wish is that my replie is maybe something to think about...some collegues of yours did that in the past one pianist took a Herbie Hancock lick and aime nolte did it also.. it is big fun to...

if all licks resolve at the first beat of bar three than it starts a bit to have a little bit too much the same charactar...beginners are maybe not immideately musical geniusses but they will notice it subconsciously..this way it sounds a bit sterile... I liked the side slipping lick over dm7 anyway
@eternalrainbow-cj3iu
@eternalrainbow-cj3iu 4 года назад
Also why not include more interesting Progressions or simple like Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 A7 and play like four chorusses in a row just improvise, and than after come up with the notes(I like actually that you you everything), because I have a classical background, and also I wrote out my own solo's over new tunes I was learning , But now it seems that each lesson is just for the real beginners....there are so many that are not yet at you level but, are a bit further than only Dm7 G7 Cmaj7, maybe the beginners have enough matrial you shared with them... let them seek your vewer films when they are beginners let us continue with more interesting changes and musical situations that are more accurate than only Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 we don't practice are major scale, we don't practice over the bar line we don't practice are minor changes...I have to tell you is no criticism only just a reminder how this works for me after 3 years...Still I am thankfull that you put so much work in your films
