Chromatic notes and chromatic enclosures has been a part of jazz vocabulary since Bebop. For many people Chromatic approach notes are a big part of the sound of a jazz lick.
In this video I am going to show you how it isn't that difficult to combine arppegios with a chromatic enclosure and make some great sounding lines. I have 5 examples each with a different type of chromatic enclosure in the line.
In fact you can use your arpeggios and the chromatic approach ideas that I go over here to already build some really great chromatic jazz guitar licks. You will probably recognize a lot of Pat Martino and Joe Pass in the sound.
My examples are all on a II V I progression and I am using 5 enclosures and some other ideas to add chromatic passing notes to your lines in the examples.

I think you’re probably my favorite youtube jazz guy. Your videos are concise but full of depth and not super gimmicky. Beato has a lot of good content but tells more stories than I want to sit through. Adam Neely is awesome but as he said his channel is not really a “chords and scales” kind of channel. Ben Levin has really insightful and out of the box lessons but not a lot about jazz fundamentals. Jeff Schneider is good at teaching licks to help fake a jazzy sound in a pinch. Your videos actually help me figure out how to approach playing jazz and I’m not even a guitarist.

Your jazz guitar channel is the only one that never gets thumbs down, that shows a lot about the quality of your teaching and personality, enclosures, can be strung together to get almost fusion-like lines.

Thanks Anthony! Ok. I don't really get the fusion idea, but I guess I don't listen to that much fusion :)

as you said simple Triads can cover upper and altered upper chord tones, my mind seems to work in reverse, could never learn in the 60s primary Brit. school system, dyslexia, I'm left handed but play a right handed guitar

Anthony Demitre interesting! It's quite common for left handed people to play right handed. I actually just found out that my oldest son is dyslexic. Over here they do make some things easier on him, but he still will need to work harder, or more.

I'm trying to master digital patterns (1235). These chromatic approaches seem to work really well with the patterns. Helps to break them up and not sound like patterns. Great idea. Sounds more like bebop. Thanks.

I credit shedding enclosures on dominant seventh chords with being the single thing that most improved my horn playing for jazz. These are the bomb!

@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
Wow! That's something. I actually don't use enclosures that much. I use the ones I talk about here but sparingly. I will think about finding more ways to talk about this though!
@iainctduncan
@iainctduncan 6 лет назад
That would be great! I suspect it's also a bigger deal for horn players because it's hard on the horn, so they're a killer technical workout. But my (much more) limited work on the guitar convinces me they would be a great way to get people out of thinking in scale positions. They make you think about the fingering that gets you *where you want to go next*. What do you think?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
To be honest I sometimes hear Horn players turn to playing only arpeggios with enclosures and that does make their language a lot weaker because it completely ignores the key which in most music is at the very core of the piece. It does indeed help with targeting notes though!
@iainctduncan
@iainctduncan 6 лет назад
I certainly agree that every instrument has what I call its "traps" - the things the instrument makes you want to do whether or not that's the strongest line. One of the reasons I've really gotten into guitar is because the things that easy or hard (the traps!) are so different on guitar vs horn that it makes me think about lines better and more deliberately. But back to enclosures, to me at least they are one of the best ways to create tension and geometric interest while still really bringing out the underlying harmony and keeping the key clear. I think the key is being selective of where they are used and then making the resolutions clear. The West-Coast guys like Richie Kamuca, Bill Perkins, and Phil Orso were all masters of this. I've very much a "song first" kinda player so I think we're on the same page there! If you don't know it, check out "Tenors Head On" by Perkins and Kamuca, amazing album!

Hey Jens. First of all, I love your videos! They’re always very helpful! Question though… In the first example you say you’re resolving to the “3” but it appears you’re landing on the note G which would be the 5 of CMajor? Am I misunderstanding that misspoken because so much of the time our target note is a 3? Are you saying you’re using that enclosure “ending on the 5” to resolve and “target” the 3?
@JensLarsen

@dylancoover4988

@@JensLarsen The example from 0:59 to 1:08. Are you saying you’re going to the 3 or am I mishearing that for G? The note (unless I’m mistaken) is actually a G before you play the CMaj7. I’m just confused by that part and if I’m thinking about it right, are you saying that phrase stopping on G is targeting E (as the 3rd of CMaj7) or are you saying G (which from what I can tell you’re enclosing) is the “target” or resolve note? I hope that makes sense. Thank you so much for replying!

Hey Jens i've been following your page for years now. Thank you so much for the insight and knowledge! Just to clarify/help at 1:05 you said you "resolve on the 3" but play a G on the C chord. Is this a mistake or am I looking at it in the wrong context of the progression?

The Epiphone is a Sheraton, it's a little heavier than an ES335. The sheraton is a good guitar, My Ibanez is certainly a better instrument but it is also much more expensive.

Hey Jens unrelated question, but any tips on how to sound outside on a I-IV-V blues background? I find it difficult to sound original and outside on backing tracks with simple chords and I was wondering if you have any tips to help with that. I've already been putting in the whole tone scale in some places to spice it up along with the altered scale, while using Mixolydian b6 instead of normal mixolydian. Do you have any recommendations?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 7 лет назад
I am not sure I think the really simple progressions really call for outside stuff to be honest. The way I mostly think about outside playing is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QYhfyDtShgs.html I don't really just think another scale, I like to have the idea of a chord sound in there to hear what the melody I am playing sounds like.

Hi Jens, Im currently going through your book Modern Jazz Guitar Concepts by Fundamental Changes, I am currently studying two note chromatic enclosures and I have a doubt. In the two note enclosure exercise, when starting on C major (playing all chromatic notes in the scale), why do we slide from B-C to begin with? B-C is a half step and as per theory for half step we play the next higher note of the scale as the chromatic note. So shouldn't we start with B-D-C, instead of B-C? I had the same conceptual issue in the following examples of the book and I must get this clarified because Im not able to make sense of it. Thanks for helping me out here..
