10 GREAT Melee Moments in 2021! 

Holiday gamers! What was your favorite thing to happen to Melee this year?

For me on the "Top 5" Tournaments of Melee hype wise of 2021 : 5) Wizzrobe schooling everyone at Main Stage 4) Plup becoming the winner of the SMASH WORLD TOUR against his other two Florida gods , Wizzrobe and Hbox 3) iBDW finally winning Riptide and then winning Summit 12 to put himself at the same level as Zain and Mang0 2) Amsa been able to comeback to the USA twice , and took sets from Mang0 , Hbox , and push Zain to the very limits 1) Mang0 winning Smash Summit 11 (the first offline tournament since COVID), and becoming the GOAT !

Super glad about 6&7 People coming together to have a more positive experience & helping by coaching is awesome. Builds such a stronger community. Also makes it more welcoming for newbies. The spike in new players is greatly appreciated & accepted. Means the game will live longer, heck yeah

Hey doc, it was recently the New Years and I was reflecting on my past years and wanted to express my thanks and gratitude for you and your positive demeanor and messages. Your kindness was a role model for me over the past few years and I would like to let you know that even though we’ve never spoken in person nor am I in chat anymore, I really appreciate your message. (This probably comes off as parasocial but it’s probably one of the last messages imma write in the melee community so idc)

I think that 2021 was a good year for melee. (By the way, I agree with you about Golden guardians. It’s probably one of the best things that happened to melee, it’s also my favorite Channel.)

Honestly I saw the plugging your team from a mile away, but honestly GG been putting in SERIOUS work, not just throwing their name on yours so when your on stream/tournies it shows up and advertises them, I was skeptical at first but GG is honestly worth the plug

All of Summit 12 for me. It was an incredible event and it was great to see the players challenge each other and push each other to their limits. Super cool that players like aMSa and iBDW really got to show their stuff.

Can’t wait to see pp in 2022!!

For me my highlight was sharing the Elevated documentary with the world. I loved telling Melee's development story. Edit: to make it more all-encompassing, the sheer amount of Melee content and the production value elevation in general is nutty.

Definitely loved all the GG content this year!

Smash summit 11 alone was one of me favorite parts of melee 2021. It was one of the few tournaments that for me never gets old to rewatch.

On your point of the skill-gap closing, I said it on Twitter and I’ll say it here too. I’m coining it now, we’re in the Free For All Era of Melee, where it feels like, once you get to top 8 (especially top 6) at a major, it seriously feels like everyone there can realistically make a run at it and win it all. And that’s something I’m really excited for.

In 2021 I loved to see community efforts in all kinds of directions. 1) Panda's efforts to develop an affordable NEW controller that would hold up was a dream we hopefully will see come true eventually. 2) Music lists like Daivd K's synthwave melee mix or custom models like the Animelee or GoldenGuardians costumes and overlays are an awesome grassroots effort. 3) Akaneia's new build recently, Uncle Punch 3.0, teams for Slippi and growing Discord servers here in EU help to diversify the scene and work as a gauge to find out what sorts of mainstream opinions on different developments inside the community there are and what people really like to do

Soo much high level competition. I'm a fan of Hbox, Wizzy, Franz and many others so I always have someone to root for.

Hi Dr PP, being a long time international melee player who's recently joined the competitive scene. Your comments on international players is really inspiring and I can't wait to become involved without travelling halfway around the world to play competitively! What I was disappointed about however, was when i started joining some online forums that half the people on there were very elitist and unfriendly which I found very surprising considering we all share such a big passion over the same game. Kinda ties in to your comments on mentality and having fun, this has been the biggest motivation to play for me but people like that just put me off socialising with other smashers. Such a shame imo

#10 should be the excitement the break out star inngenn from Japan brings. He might be someone to push asma to finally make his way into winning super majors? Overall great stuff ppmd, love your content :)

I feel like this list was a lot more conceptualizing growth and describing general trends so I'll add something more tangible to the list: Netplay for Palestine was a huge event and did a lot of good ^^

Number 10 is the Hbox faint popoff

Had it worked out, I would have said my #10 is the Panda controller and introduction to so many viable controller options, but seeing how that went and how the box controllers and goomwave controversy is going... I think the Akaneia build and the progress in the Melee mod making scene has overall helped give the game future longevity and made Melee that much more accessible. Anything to get new players in and help create new and interesting content is what I think will help our scene stay strong. Also, 3:17 is there some sort of meaning behind all the "J" named players? Are they part of a clan or something or are their names just that unoriginal? I know a lot of them have been around for a long time but still Lol
