The 10th episode of RIO's "How To" series, is presented by RIO ambassador Russ Miller. In this episode, Russ shows numerous ways to fish a streamer while wading along the bank of a river; each different from the rest, and when applied to a day on the river, will give you the maximum chance of catching a fish.
Russ's tips and great information takes the mystery out of this increasingly popular style of river fishing.
RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique.
These invaluable lessons for the fly fisher are packed with information and top tips, and each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

Russ may be my favorite industry demonstrator. Not sure how he makes it all seem so easy and doable. A rare gift.

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ru-vid.comUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

This has a lot of techniques and styles that I've never seen or don't commonly see. I appreciate it as it'll definitely open up my streamer styles. Streamers really are the most versatile flies to use and are just so fun. Thanks!

Live 10 minutes from the Nantahala River in NC. The fish are finniky here and very smart. Fall is the time. We need rain here. The rivers and creeks are LOW right now. Really like the vids.

I like the set up a lot especially if you're using fluoro. Fluoro tapered leaders are way to pricy.

Henry's Fk. of the Snake? Looks like familiar country. OOH! Cool method of the bump. Never seen that before. At least here in ID, drift boating isn't an option in a lot of water. So bank & wading are the only options. One question, why quarter down casting? I was taught to cast quarter upstream and then mend the line downstream as you go. Good video!

Often times for extra action I will tie a loop knot for both the top dropper streamer as well as the point streamer.

Can you clarify how long a sink tip section and in what weight like say T8....thx
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 6 лет назад
In this episode Russ used a 200gr, 24ft sink tip, which is ideal for a 6wt rod. T-8 sinks a lot faster than that line, so if depth is needed, the T-8 is a better option. On a 6wt rod you want about 200 grains to cast, which means if you are using T-8 you'd need about about 25ft (25 x 8 = 200). Does that answer your question?

Do you use the bigger fly on the bottom of your tippet
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 6 лет назад
In most situations, yes, as it will cast and turnover best with the bigger fly there.

I have an 8 weight that i bought because when i started fly fishing the guy at the fly shop said i needed two set ups, a 5w 9ft and an 8w 9ft. well i never use the 8w 9ft. I have several more 3, 4, and 5's now for small creek stuff but have been invited to boat trip the dark canyon. So, is an 8w too big to be a dedicated streamer for colorado boat trips, and if not what line weight, type and logic. all types of fishing; boat, bank, lake, stream etc.
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 4 года назад
Very much so - sorry to say. That's a great size for steelhead and bonefish, but just too much for any trout - unless you are lucky enough to go to Jurassic lake! A 6wt is the perfect streamer outfit for any trout in the US - probably paired up with an intermediate StreamerTip line, for fall and for drift boats, and a floating OutBound Short for lakes, and when distance is needed.

If that’s the bank it must be 20 foot deep in the middle.

Just curious about that dropper rig. I've thought about tying flies into the tag end like that but decided not to because I figured it would be a tangled mess to cast. Do you ever find that to happen often enough to be an issue?
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS Год назад
It certainly does happen, but as long as you're keeping your loops wide, tends to not be an issue. Russ here is a very experienced stillwater angler, so very proficient in casting rigs with multiple streamers. Hope this helps. Cheers!

What rod and reel is that? Also what are some patterns and sizes that will work good with this double streamer rig?
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 5 лет назад
The rod is a Sage Method, and the reel a Sage 4260. As for a good streamer rig for this style, it's good to mix and match colors and sizes. For example have a large white weighted streamer as one fly, and a smaller dark streamer as the other. A Kreelex and a conehead yellow muddler is a very good fall combo.

@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 7 лет назад
On that rod, and in those small creeks, the LightLine is certainly going to be your best choice. Tight lines!
@alansarpy
@alansarpy 6 лет назад
Great my local fly shop advised me to pair it with the Rio perception, which i purchased. is this a bad choice? The circa is the softest rod I own, will the perception over power this style of rod??
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 6 лет назад
The Perception is a very good choice for smaller rivers, and at short range will not over power the Circa. Once you get 30 feet of line outside the tip of your rod, you might find it starts to feel a little heavy. That is because the RIO Perception is about a half line size heavier then the industry standard, but you will really only notice this with that much line out.

I have a 5/6 rod and 5wd line.. Idk why i can't cast streamers.. I can only whit roll cast on longer distance... Why i can't make normal cast whit this set up gear? I cand keep on air the line to cast on longer distance.. I need highter line/rod or?
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 4 года назад
It sounds like your line is a little light. A 5/6 rod for casting streamers definitely needs at least a 6wt line to make it cast. Lines have different functions and tapers, and if you want the easiest casting line for big streamers and distance, then our OutBound Short would crush anything else. It loads very easily, and shoots a long way, and there are a number of density options available. If you particularly want a sink tip, then our StreamerTip is the shape line as the OBS, but has sink tips, whereas the OBS isn't really available in a sink tip.
@glensurprenant7408

So if you want to fish streamers, do you have to bring another reel?. For instance if i'm fishing dry flies ill be using floating line. Now if I want to change to a streamer how can I pull my line off to put on sink tip. I'm new to fly fishing and this is just odd to me from spin fishing trout.
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 5 лет назад
This is where you would look to get a spare spool for your reel which you would have a sinking tip line already spooled up and ready to go. Then you would just change out the spools to fish the sink tip.
@MrAdrenaline00
@MrAdrenaline00 4 года назад
I’ll damned if you needed a sink tip line to fish a streamer especially in that shallow run. May as well just carry three rods and a kitchen sink in your pack. Even had a specific length of sink tip. Lol. A pure case of “that guy”.

Are you using weighted streamers along with the sinking tip? Or is that overkill
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 5 лет назад
Yes, a weighted streamer has more action and "jig", so we prefer those.
@bigron8346
@bigron8346 6 лет назад
You don't use any weights?
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 6 лет назад
You can, and plenty of people do add weight that way, but it becomes a little harder and unbalanced to cast. Best to use the sinking portion of a fly line, or a weighted fly to get the depth you need - where possible.
