@@8MinuteAxe I'm still playing my 6 and 12 stringers, but over the last year I have finally decided to properly learn the piano. So it is consuming most of my time lately. So sometimes when I play the piano I think of guitar concepts that I use, and now I'm approaching the guitar with new musical ideas that I've been picking up from the piano. I have slowly started to fall in love with Jazz. Specifically the modal jazz Era of the 60's. Coltrane, Miles Davis, Mccoy Tyner, Bill Evans...i find that music way more psychedelic than the psychedelic music I've listened to most of my life. Very trippy. By the way, eight miles high by the Byrds was their attempt at playing Jazz after having listened to John Coltrane on repeat on their tour bus. I believe the song that inspired Roger Mcguinn was called India.

Great song selection and playing, as always. Fire and Rain always brings back a sad memory. That song was popular and on the juke box while I was at Fort Lewis, Washington waiting for a flight to Vietnam. (I was there 17 days, typical Army "hurry up and wait" stuff.) A guy I got to know during that time left on a flight a day or two before I did, his flight crashed in Alaska, and he was killed in the crash. I was actually very happy to GET to Vietnam after that.

Good job, Mark! Another installment of inspiration to play simply because of the joy and beauty of it. …. With the benefit of expanding or honing one’s skills via fingerstyle. I agree with your emphasis on its importance. Fingerstyle has taught me so much, and I found that having invested the time in learning some more challenging (for me, at least) pieces by Billy McLaughlin or Phil Keaggy, it was considerably easier to learn and play things for our band.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 3 месяца назад
I took a little of Phil's class on Truefire and for the amount of time to invest, I couldn't find anything that really spoke to me. I'm still working through the Mike Dawes stuff. I really like the modern percussive style. This rating system assumes that one isn't truly a fingerstyle player. All of these are very basic when you put them up against any arrangement of Chet, Tommy, Jerry, Phil, etc. Mood for a day was a little bit more challenging but Angelina is by far more of a challenge than any of these. I worked through all of the tunes in Brooks Robertsons Fingerstyle Songbook. All of those are perfect to spend a few days on and add a song to the repertoire.

Great selection!! How hard is it to switch from using just your thumb to a thumb-pick?
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 3 месяца назад
I switched to a thumb pick when I took Tommy E's courses. And then I worked through Brooks Robertson's Boom Chick Essentials. Lately I've been working on some Mike Dawes percussive stuff so no thumb pick there. It takes some time getting used to it and learning the dynamics and attack, at least it did for me.

Hopefully some of these are beginner friendly. Also, can you do any finger style Tom Petty??? Nobody seems to do much Tom Petty except Free Falling and MJs last Dance. I want to learn some Tom Petty deep cuts....
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 3 месяца назад
Hey Chris I've done a few videos on American Girl as well as the ones you just mentioned. Here's an early video I did which includes Wildflowers ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-btx9fY0KHzs.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. That's a fun one and easy. I also have a video with the solo to Woman In Love (easy solos you can learn) but I can seem to locate it right now. A lot of post Full Moon Fever Tom Petty is more acoustic based and translates better to some fingerpicking and chord arpeggiating. I hope that helps a little. Mark

Sorry I missed it Mark, I think it is the first one I have missed in a couple of years, but I was out of the house from 2 hours before it started until 5 hours after it finished so i have only managed to watch it now. Good demonstrations of fingerstyle works well on many songs but unfortunately I have enough trouble getting the fingers on my left hand to be on the right string and fret at the right time without getting individual fingers on my right hand to be where they should be to play the correct string. That's why I have to play guitar and not piano 🙁

There’s some great fingerpicking styles there. I really must try and learn the travis-picking technique. Any tips?
@PeteFolksinger
@PeteFolksinger 3 месяца назад
I learned it in stages. Find a song that has a straight pattern like Wedding Song (T1T2). Getting that alternating thumb bass note is key. When you get that smooth, Travis is much like that pattern with pauses (p) here and there. Start with. T 1 T 2 T 1 T 2 Work toward T p T 2 T 1 T 2

I'm your intro, you were playing the intro to Crazy On You. I've tried this and have failed spectacularly, but I did notice that it looked like your left hand wasn't changing as much as I do, which makes me believe that I don't have the left hand part correct. Any chance of breaking that down?
