Great to hear the interviewer side as well. I mostly hired beginners, so there never was much discussion about the starting salary. I had a clear impression what we would be willing to pay. But there was room for negotiating the future salary in 3 or 6 months. Actually this kind of deal always worked out very well. Every candidate that agreed proved to be a good choice (for the next decades)

Another great video, with lots of informative and highly relevant - on point - specifics. Your videos show a lot about you two - and it's all good. Between your personalities and professionalism I can see that your business will be a success. I would add a couple recommendations about virtual interviews. First make sure all your electronic devices are on silent, including incoming emails and alerts on your computer. Tape a note on your front door saying "Do not knock on the door until after (insert time 15 - 30 minutes after your interview is to end, in case it runs late). If you don't live alone, make sure your animals were walked/fed/ and secured in a safe place prior to the interview and that other people (adults & kids) are elsewhere in a comfortable place where they'll not enter the room you're doing your interview. Lastly, it's not a good idea to only dress on the top half "because that's all they'll see" - I had an interviewee a few weeks ago that needed to get up and it quickly became apparent he had on a suit jacket and tie - with only his underwear 🙄.... not good, lol. Fun facts: in the U.S. you cannot submit a picture of yourself with your application, if you do, the application must automatically be rejected by HR (to avoid claims of discrimination). Employers cannot ask any questions about the candidates' religion, marital status, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disabilities. (Also, to avoid discrimination.) In most US states it's now illegal to ask for someone's previous salary, to avoid adding on to a any previous salary bias - which was a historically common occurence among woman and minorities. Many Americans (especially more senior workers) give a range when interviewing for a new company because benefit packages vary widely between companies and can equal 30 -100+% in additional to your actual base annual salary. For example, some companies will pay all, or most, of your health insurance costs, put 10% to 200% a year as a match into your retirement accounts; pay for your transportation to & from work; give large performance bonuses; up to 6 weeks, or even unlimited vacation time - along with other benefits as non-taxable job incentives.

Hey folks, amazing video. Thank you!! I was invited for an interview last week. I was super nervous and shy. But it went very well, I managed to give good answers. But there is one silly thing that I was in doubt. I am a final year PhD student in Scotland. I am from Brazil. One of the questions was: do you like to write papers? I answered something like this: I first said that for me is an honour working with science. I came from a very difficult background, for example, I lived more than 25 years at the Brazilian slums. The only thing in my life that opened doors for me was opening books. I said that to say that I do enjoy writing papers (I have some papers published and two book chapters), and I do love doing science. For me it was really important the opportunities that my undergrad, masters and PhD supervisors gave to me, for this reason I will never take as granted the fact that I work doing research. Now my question for you is: did I gave too much detail to the question? It was silly to say that I came from the slums? This was my first interview ever. There were other questions too. I always tried to give the answer plus some extra detail. For one of my answers I also said that for me it was important to give to other new students the same opportunity I had during my career. Then I asked if they would allow me to give online workshops during the saturdays. As a paralel work. They said that in fact that would be a good idea and I could do that as part of my job. It was amazing for me. But I was in doubt about how formal I should be. My question to you is: do you think I did wrong saying the detail that I came from the Brazilian slums? Nowadays I do PhD at the best UK university (University of St Andrews), then for me is important to say that I am honoured for being here. Sorry for the long quesiton.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Obviously our viewpoint must not reflect your interviewers, but here is what we think. Never be ashamed or try to hide where you come from! What would you do or think of a candidate you hired for a maternity cover position only to have her tell you during her first day at work that she is also pregnant but doesn’t plan on taking leave for whatever reasons, maybe she really needs the job and didn’t disclose her pregnancy status because she knew she would get disqualified from the position. Really great video! I would also like to ask: if in tech companies in Germany is usual to have annual salary raises? If yes, then what %? Just wondering, as in my country it's a usual thing, so that's why you can agree to less salary in the beginning, as you know after 1 year it will be >=10% more. That helps in identifying the salary start

Is it viewed negatively when a person takes time from their career to focus on family? What can someone do to show that they are not irrelevant when they get back in the market? In the US is it highly dependent on employer, but I'm not sure about Germany. Also, do you have recommendations with regards to researching salary? I have heard of kununu, but I am wondering if there are other resources I'm not yet aware of. Thank you!
@simplegermany
@simplegermany 2 года назад
Hey Krystal, you can research salaries via a page like gehalt.de. We talk about it more in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qwli8DPjYoI.html. Taking maternity leave and parental leave are completely normal in Germany, however, we would argue that it still also depends on the company and the job profile, to show your up-to-dateness with let's say possible certifications that are available in your field.

Hi - I have a question - do you provide your achievements on a CV and reasons why you think they are benefits - or do you just inform what you think the benefits of your achievements are at an interview?
@simplegermany

If they are relevant you can put them on your CV, yes 😊

Okay, I have a tricky question about badmouthing previous employers. I live in a pretty toxic and discriminatory country, and all but one of my local past employers in IT were in the realm of actual harassment/abuse. And after I switched to remote work I went through a few more toxic work environments because those types of companies are like sharks who smell blood in the water. How do I explain that to a potential German employer? I seriously don't want to sugarcoat people who caused me quite a few PTSD symptoms and neuroses, especially since I'm still not fully healed.
@simplegermany
@simplegermany Год назад
That is a tricky one 😊. I’d try to focus on applying to companies that have a more inclusive and healthy work culture. You can check their website, see their online presence, and read reviews on a website called Kununu. Although I’ve worked for great companies that had bad reviews in Kununu, so you should take the comments there with a grain of salt. And instead of focusing on the negative experiences you have had with previous employers, try to mention to the new employer the positive things you see in them and how you can contribute to their goals. I think bad mouthing is never received well. All the best of luck 🍀

Beyond a CV, what other inital paperwork is required to send... references, proof of experience, certifications, C1/C2? What kind of formats should these be? What is a standard response rate from companies? Could it be up to 3 months before hearing back from a company?
@simplegermany
@simplegermany 2 года назад
Hey Helen, that depends a bit on the field and position you are applying for. If you are applying through an online tool, you often get asked to upload different kinds of documents. Generally speaking add the documents that support your CV and cover letter and help make you stand out. 😊

Hi i have a question. So i applied for a company in Deutsch, i have B1 level in Deutsch, i am scared i might not say or understand everything in Deutsch during the Interview. What do the companies expect in such situations, to me to speak and understand everything in Deutsch? Also how do i ask them to please use English when i dont understand something? Is it rude if i say that? The company is an international company and it requires English language proficiency also.
@simplegermany

I’d be honest with the interviewer. If you don’t understand something, kindly ask them to repeat it in English. I had some of my interviews in a mix of German/ English. -J

Hello 👋 I need an advice: I had the first interview with an HR manager from Berlin, after several days, she send me email and asked me my schedule for the next week, to schedule second interview. She told, she thinks I'm a good candidate. I wrote her when it would be convenient for me, than send the second email, with more choices. I didn't receive any response since 3 workdays already. Should I contact her again? Or wait? Or just forget and move on?

Soo... I'm here with a weird update 😃 I had second interview with my boss-to-be and she said that HR manager will contact me about the details. No contact, after couple of days I sent her an email, saying thank you and asking about following steps. She never responded back. Is it OK in Germany to leave a candidate without a reply? 🤔 Should not she answered me back, even if it's "no" and make the situation clear? 11 days passed already after my last email 😕

Hello, I am 36 years old man from Indonesia and I have A-2/B-1 Germany skill. i want to ask, why I kept getting rejection applying a job in Germany (probably more than 100 times). Is it because I'm too old? Or because I live abroad (in Indonesia)? I have master degree in Biotechnology and mostly apply for a position as BTA or MTA (Biologie Technische Assistenten) please tell me the reason why I kept being rejected? Thank you and I subscribed to your channel since it's quite helpful.
@heinzerhardt7047
@heinzerhardt7047 2 года назад
Yes it is probably a big problem that you are so far away. I think for this kind of position it is quite unusual to hire someone from abroad. Also with the master degree and the age some might think you are too highly qualified for this kind of position. Like it might be difficult to integrate you in a team where you mostly have follow directions at first. But in general MTAs and BTAs are in high demand in Germany.

Your tips are very useful but I fail to follow tips 6. I had almost 10 interviews and failed because I'm terrible at small talk. I'm the one who is quiet in the party. I have trouble when it comes to word choices, even in my native language. I know that I made interviewers uncomfortable. I tried my best to fix that but I guess I'll prepare for disappointment and give up.

If you think people are applying for jobs because they love your company and want to help it grow rather than, you know, WANTING TO EARN A LIVING, you are beyond privileged. There are dreams jobs and dream companies, but you need to wake up - you can't honestly expect everyone to apply for a job because they are in love with your company specifically. Saying "You do not want to help our company grow, you just want a pay check" - like seriously, who do you think you are? And what do you think an employee is?

Tell you what. If you feel every day miserable about any given series of events which led you to Having to do a job, not being able to fully enjoy your income and/or possibly damaging your health Vs. if you have a team of people around you that you feel happy to have met, seeing your qualities and all that you stand for as a person being put to practice, after that walking home actually standing tall about being useful and worthy.. is what makes the difference between your "wake up call" and the real healthy way of making a living. Also usually, that's of course not always the case, but more often than not crappy jobs also come with crappy salaries. You wanna speak honestly, that's an honest truth. Sure, everyone applies because of the need to have peace and make ends meet, but then again you have to look through a clear perspective and thus like certain things far more than others. (The so called being "in-love" with a company) This video is a Masterpiece!! It's about having the mindset of a grown-up person with a right plan for their future in a positive way!
