I am 60. I grew up waiting for my weekly dose of Kirk and Spock. That being said, Battlestar Galactica… THIS Battlestar Galactica… Is the best science-fiction series and possibly the best television series of my life.
@@robertperrotto870 I can accept that. Expanse is top tier. My second and third are StarTrek TOS, and StarTrek Enterprise. All three complete series are loaded into my phone’s permanent memory.
@@paulprovenzano3755 Enterprise is a very under rated addition to the ST Universe, and I blame the 1st season writers for it. The shows 2nd through 4th season had much better writing. I also think Voyager gets some undeserved hate too. BTW - I am 56. Great Paisan minds think alike! Beuna giornata!
Edward James Olmos only agreed to do the show if there were no aliens. He told them that the first time something with three eyes shows up he was done.
@@mwilk19 yeh Edward aslo initially turned down batestar gactica because he though the orginsk series was too silly in his mind and he thought the hew series was nothing like it
No aliens, but using classic rock songs and people who live in other people's heads is OK. The only thing that makes this palatable is that even though they had FTL tech they apparently never bothered exploring beyond the "red line".
I completely agree, It worked for Firefly, too. Aliens can be an easy excuse for lazy writing. "Why does this character behave in such an irrational way?" "Because they're an alien; duh!"
Although I never noticed that the Enterprise makes a cameo appearance as part of the fleet, I did notice that, in the scene early on where Roslin in getting the bad news from her doctor on Caprica, Serenity from "Firefly" appears as one of the shops flying over head outside the window.
The decision to outlaw networked computers in the Galactica world was brilliant, and I think that a real-life lesson of that very sort is in the future for all of us. It was also a great design choice. I love how the low-tech look of the ship interiors contrasted with the high-tech vision of the Cylons.
Here's a genuine little known fact. In the first episode of the mini-series, when Laura Roslin is in her office, a Firefly class spaceship flies past in the background. 😉
THE best television show ever for me. So many fantastic moments, things that bring tears to my eyes, even on re-watches. I wish it could have gone on a few more seasons.
I just introduced my GF to this show 3 months ago. I had re-watched the whole thing at least twice since it aired and figured once more would be fun. She reluctantly agreed to give the miniseries a try, and by the time the fleet left the ammunition facility, she was addicted. We finished the entire series last week. It's SO dense in terms of moving parts and well-crafted characters that it feels like it moves at a thousand miles an hour. So many shows plod and creep along, but with BSG there's a major plot advancement every episode. I think that's part of why it is so compelling. As an aside, watching it knowing all the "secrets" with someone who has no idea what's about to happen next was a lot of fun. Seeing her reactions to the twists was a real treat.
I just finished my 14th straight rewatch since quarantine. I find the characters so compelling, I forget a lot of the plotlines, (dog fights). I'm starting my 15th today!
Did the same with my girlfriend. I can agree on everything you said. Even though she found other things interesting compared to me. But having watched it about 5 times I can say that about myself everytime I see new things and getting older I'm interested in different things. I hated the new Caprica arc earlier now it is one of my favorites.
If my ex-GF Annie is reading this, I would like to give a heartfelt thanks for introducing me to this show. Definitely the only good thing to come from that six month dumpster fire of a relationship.
While I generally agree, just gonna leave the terms black market woman king here... Now, compared to an average show, outstanding- but even BSG has a few clunker episodes. (And we all agree the last three minutes didn't happen, right?)
@@Sephiroth144 I'm watching on DVD and skip Black Market every time. As for the last 3 minutes.. I grew up on the original. The "epilogue" is spoken in the original series prologue/theme song.✌
@@jonsnowight9510 Moore said the last seasons was a mess because there were a bunch of plot lines and threads that had to be abandoned late in the process due to budget, time, etc. And it ended up being sloppy
The deepest meaning of the show, to me, lies in one phrase by Gaius, in the last episode : "things men do for love" While the show basic premise is that humanity got wiped out because of a sin (gaius wanting to get laid), it reveals Gaius actually acted out of love. The show then, becomes not about destruction based on sin, but rebirth based on love.
@@mentalrobb5062 I'm right there with you. The remake ruined it with drama. A good scifi should be how do we outsmart the more advanced enemy and achieve victory against overwhelming odds this week. Not only was there too much drama but not even close to enough victory. Just drama, drama, defeat, drama, defeat more drama and than on top of all of that lets make most of the main cast all sleeper cylon agents so it's all just doom and gloom. The one thought that kept me watching was "This is Battlestar Galactica after all so no matter what happens along the way it has to end with the Galactica finally reaching Earth right?" but no; they even screwed that up by having them find an already devastated post apocalyptic Earth so more doom and gloom. And somehow some people call that a masterpiece. /facepalm
Just a classic. The show was an emotional roller coaster. I felt nervous and fear because you couldn’t predict what was going to happen. I wanted Starbuck and Apollo to get together, was upset that they didn’t, then they do get together but now Apollo was cheating and I felt bad for Dualla because she really loved him. The show was really gritty and dealt with real human situations and their consequences. Just an amazing show.
I first watched this show when I was 15, I watched it with my dad. I'm watching it for the second time at 27 with me wife. What an amazing show. I was a boy the first time, now I'm a man; I feel so differently about the difficult decisions made in the show now. My wife absolutely loves the show. It really is perfect.
"Ronald D. Moore called them messengers instead." Maybe few people know this, but the Hebrew word that is translated as Angel actually means Messenger and does not necessarily refer to a supernatural being.
One of the greatest Sci-fi shows i've ever watched, rewatch it all at least once a year. The gender swap for Starbuck was brilliant & felt natural unlike many these days.
@@carlh-thehermitwithwi-fi679 Ab-so-freaking-LUTELY it was about character, not gender. Not to mention that they *color*-swapped Colonel Tigh. They weren't trying to first and foremost make political statements (although those were there by the truckload), they were trying to first and foremost tell a good story. A good story can do both, and it sure would be nice if today's 'storytellers' could do the same.
I am glad that Crashdown gets a mention. She was one of my favorite side/small time characters. All the pilots that get more than a passive mention and some screen time were cool.
Edward James Olmos was one of the best actors/roles in the new BSG. his relationship with saul was a trainwreck to watch. sooooo many awesome scenes between them 2. sackov was top notch too
Back in 2008 I ended up in the hospital, due to having a gall stone get lodged. Ended up having my gall bladder removed. The week before I ended up in there, season 3 had released on DVD. The week leading up to season 4 starting they played the entire series on Scifi channel. I would drift in and out of consciousness and have the show playing in the room. My mom spent most of the days in the room watching the series. I saw the first episode of season four in the hospital room and I was so happy to see it. I said to my mom, I can't wait to see the next season. She replied, I can see why it was a great show. Got to rewatch the entire series again. Always liked to stop the series around that one episode and then watch the movie Razor, which took place between two of the episodes in season 3. Last time I watched them, I started with Caprica and went on from there. I just wish there was more movies set in that Universe.
@@DMSProduktions Caprica is the start of it all prequel. Blood and Chrome is a prequel movie, from Adama's perspective and the first cylon war. It is possible to have multiple prequels. Perhaps you mean Caprica as The Start of It All, hence definitive prequel?
Yes, I remember learning the reality of who Baltar's invisible friend. She told Baltar outright in the 3rd Season, and it is confirmed near the end of the Series, when both invisible personages appear before Baltar & #6
This version of BSG was the greatest retellings of a Sci-fi show I've ever seen. I really loved how everything got fleshed out and gritty tone of the show.
Teilhard de Chardin's concept of an Omega Point civilization in the future that achieves transcendence of space and time and then reaches back in the past to make sure the events that created it happen. A version of this idea is reflected in the movie Interstellar.
According to Edward James Olmos , Gaff from Blade Runner is a descendant of William Adama. The Blade Runner influence is heavy throughout. Even one of the pilots sidearms is based after Rick Deckard’s police pistol. Olmos also went on to say that BSG ended where Blade Runner began. My favorite sci fi show ever. “ All this has happened before. All this will happen again.”
This show is so amazing on so many levels. It dealt with many current social and military issues, without being woke, or feeling like they were cramming a narrative down your throat. When you approach issues with actual underlying truth, it resonates.
If this was made today, in pretty much the exact same way, disparagers would call it woke. That word has no real meaning apart from "stuff I don't like that's somewhat critical of conservatism" ...
@@sid2112 : And yet when some Americans want a Nordic healthcare system, or child care, or education... others cry. No. It's socialism! Logically one can't have it both ways.
I feel like a lot of the people involved in the whole GINO campaign were going off of their faded memories of the original series, rather than the actual content of the original series. Sure, by today's standards, the show seems pretty light, but for its time, it was dealing with some dark themes that definitely carried over into the new series. A couple of years ago I binged the original series immediately followed by the new series, and it was both shocking and impressive how many ideas Ron Moore carried over, from different models of Cylons, the class warfare within the fleet, "angels," politics vs religion -- it's all there in the original series.
Well you have to remember late 70's early 80's tv was different in how they handled subjects that today and in 05 would be faced in a more realistic fashion. That's why Katee Sackhoff's character of Starbuck worked so well. She wasn't the perfect solider or person in general and it worked.
Lol the original series had a main character who fell in love with a prostitute, a mother who decided to become a pilot and died after marrying Apollo leaving Apollo to raise the kid, one of the bad guys was literally like having an orgy the day after his wife died etc.
@@corneliuscrewe677 Same here! also tried the board game the other day which was a heckload of fun. Never watched the prequel blood & chrome though. Think it's worth a watch?
THE best remake of a show. The new Battlestar Galactica it rang more true than the first. In the original, the colonists were gallavanting and happily skipping about, from one adventure to the next, no worries, no stress. In the remake the colonists were like "Holy Crap!!, We gotta go, We Gotta Go Now!!. Being hunted , as opposed to being looked for.
I enjoy Star Wars, I'm nostalgic about Star Trek, I really Really liked The Expanse, Movies like the Aliens Series are also amazing... but I absolutely LOVE the Re-imagined BSG! The slew of memorable gritty characters and the story with its intricacies was incredible.
So... if you are a fan you knew most of these already and hardly anything in here was mind blowing... but it's nice to revisit BSG after all this time :)
This is, by far, the best SciFi show ever. I wish they would have made one more season. I bet the actors would have signed on and there were plenty of story lines and plots still available.
This show was going to have a much darker ending but was cut for budget reasons. The 6 original ideas are mentioned in the commentary on the last 2 episode on the Blue Ray set.
I got into an interesting discussion with a Lost fan. I tried to get him to watch Battlestar Galactica, but he said he didn't like science fiction. I pointed out that Lost was clearly science fiction since there was no way a plane could crash land on an island and the world would not be aware of it in this modern age. Turns out it was bad science fiction compared to BSG.
Battlestar Galactica was an exceptional drama with amazing writing, acting, directing and production value, and it was fantastic allegory for what was happening in the real world at the time (and still is happening). It was one of the best shows ever to air on television. It just happened to be science fiction.
angel is literally hebrew for messenger. Like that isn't an obscure that's something most christians should know, fyi there's a hierarchy of angles. If you follow the book of Enoch there's a massive overlap with angels and battlestar gallatica. There's 7 types of angles, cenutrions/basestars/raiders all take on a particular type of angel. And yes biblical angels like the Cherubim look more like robots than people.
This mythology needs to be revisited in a huge way, not in Earth's present or future, but in its past. The set up is perfect, in that the survivors of the 12 Colonies and survivors of the Cylon Civil War unite to settle a prehistoric Earth populated by primitive humans. They've already laid the groundwork for this with the the various real life _human_ religions we know about. More importantly, they could meld the lore and _miracles_ of these real life religions with the knowledge and abilities of these human/Cylon colonists who surely would become god-like to the primitive humans already populating Earth... Sure, it will probably piss of the faithful of current religions as things, such as Moses parting the Red Sea, are given some kind of technological explanation, but for the vast majority of people not offended by such things, it would serve as a deep exploration of Earth's theologies and their lore.
Excellent analysis. I love this show, just rewatched entire series again for the 3rd time. I thought that when it came out in the aftermath of 9/11 and the US 'war on terror' there was a lot of commentary in the show related to all that entailed. Also thought the cast was stellar. The relationship between Adama and Rosland was incredibly well done and extremely touching. But all were excellent. I think one of best series ever made, regardless of genre. However, I tried to watch the original versions of BSG, and just found unwatchable.
A friend talked me into watching this last year and after a couple of episodes I felt silly for sleeping on it for so long. Interesting characters played by a brilliant cast, guided by really good writing.
I took the scene as a nod to a scene from TNG. Worf is working on a ship in a bottle when the door chime causes him to wreck the model. He disgustedly sweeps the wreckage into the garbage.
Well TBH Moore did a big Head fake with the beings of light to fans of the OG series. The murals that Kara painted of the Light Ship and all. That's another part of the dhow Moore took out with Sheba and Bojay. But I guess they had to trim where they could.
I met Edward James Almos he was a really nice person. We talked for fifteen minutes and he wrote me a note. And I still have it to this day. It says: "Welcome aboard battle star Galactica Commander Adama." That's before his admiral rank change.
So say we all...apart from Trek, this is the second best ever series on the small screen, it's a shame they placed it with a hard end to series although I can see, it had really nowhere to go but love love loved this show, defo a dark series, felt real, just wasn't enough of it
The hard end implied what happend at Caprica will likely happen to us. I love the counter to the saying; "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." How does it go? "You run a complex system enough times as sooner or later you'll get different results."
I didn't see, at a glance, if anyone mentioned it but you forgot an awesome hidden fact: Serenity, from Firefly, can be seen landing during the mini series when Roslin is being told she has cancer. Its cameo was an inside joke between 2 digital artist that both worked on Firefly & BSG.
Because Baltar and Six are both Cylon, when they died in a nuclear blast, their wires got cross when they were resurrected. And that’s why they both see the other when they wake.
Fact #11, The Serenity from the show Firefly is shown through the window in the doctor's office where Laura Roslin is learning about her cancer before the cyclone destroy everything.
The best thing to come out of covid lockdown for me in the UK was the BBC showed the entire of BSG from the start, at about 2 episodes per week, plus Razor, with no inter season gaps, in HD with 5.1 surround sound. It was way better than watching the first run on low rent Sci Fi channel with poor picture quality and sound in the UK.
@@Rhythmicons Seemed intact to me, there were plenty of gruesome and sexy bits they left in so I can't imagine what they would have cut. It was shown very late at night, often starting at 11pm or after midnight. No problem with the 9pm watershed.
The only time I was really disappointed by the show was also one of the many times I was absolutely blown away by the show...Pegasus' final charge. I get that the show was Battlestar *Galactica*, but the way they destroyed Pegasus was an insult to the characters' intelligence who commanded them.
@@paavobergmann4920 What's your point? Do you even know the scene I'm referring to? Lee Adama was none of the things you mention and in many ways was an ideal commander (though he didn't follow orders due to Galactica having plot armor).
And I still can't an explanation about Baltar saying "You know he doesn't like that name", when 6 says "God's plan", then she looks at him and he says, "silly, silly me". I don't get it.
What I know for certain is I never get tired of this show. I can watch it over and over and it’s never boring to me. Also Tricia Helfer may be the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.
I used to love this show. My wife loves Moore because he made "Outlander", which i can't get into. Having said that, she can't get into BSG. That's how you know Moore is good at what he does.
loved the show big time i binged it all in very short time with very little sleep. love the ending bigggg time. one of my all time fav show. watched it once more at later time. not as great when you know whats going to happen but still great watch second time. you should also watch caprica if you have not. great series showing time line prior to bsg. the events that lead to cylons.
Moore’s quote about the Cylon Homeworld was from years earlier, which obviously changed because the Colony was referred to as their Homeworld on screen. The Colony is their “homeworld.” I quote it because it’s a fake Homeworld, we all know they’re from Caprica, I mean Earth, I mean Kobal.
this show was soooo great, i’m actually surprised to find out and even find it hard to believe that a GINO existed. and i actually do remember enjoying the original series when i was a kid.
I believe that the GINO term originated when, after Richard Hatch was cast, Dirk Benedict was not. This caused a backlash from the original show's fans and Benedict himself.
