I know I still remember that line and I quote it constantly. I try to work it into conversations with my conspiracy theory friends and a few of them actually believe me.
7:13 You left out the best line in the entire series which resulted from Wally being in Lex's body. "Aren't you going to wash your hands?" "No. 'cause I'm *evil.* "
I absolutely LOVED this show. Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, JLA, and JLAU...loved them all. DCs animated universe is and will always be, amazing.
Tim Cotrell as someone who read the Milestone comics, Static Shock was a bit of a letdown. That said, it was cool to see some of those characters on-screen.
It's a little strange that Static, despite having his own cartoon in the same universe, wasn't a member or even mentioned in the JLU until the one episode where they did a time traveling Batman Beyond crossover.
Honestly, Batman not being so prominent in the first few series wasn’t a bad thing. He does prefer his solo(/duo) work and does a lot of the behind the scene work for the league like funding and investigating. PLUS he already had the Batman animated series so I am glad we got to see so much of the other heroes instead. It worked out so well.
There's some real nuggets from the commentary if you own the box set too. A couple of my favorites: - JLU was supposed to feature significantly more single episode stories with a smaller hero pool... they ignored that and gave us this instead (GREAT call!) - The episode where Wonder Woman is turned into a pig is supposed to feature Joker & his gang in the intro about to rob a bank. Batman walks by in the distance holding Wonder Pig trying to comfort her. Joker looks at them utterly confused and calls off the robbery on the spot.
Didn’t they also say in the commentary (for either Alive or Destroyer?) that while they’d kept writing most seasons expecting the story to end the actual cancellation caught them off guard and they had big plans for the next season (with Luther and Darkseid and Braniac and the anti-life equation?) that sadly never materialized? I can’t express how much I’d love to see them pick up where they left off with that series...
This was done in a time without massive internet surveillance. If it was today, he could have taken a selfie, send to his facilities to analyze and he would know instantly who Flash was.
@@robsonwaterkemper I'm 99% sure Tineye was already around way before this, in reality Lex would easily be able to figure out his identity, the line is just a joke.
Imagine lex bumping into Barry (or is it Wally i can't remember) and realizing Who the flash is since we All know lex wouldn't forget a secret like that
@@kurtlindner It was something that happened in the comics, previously. Flash is one of the very few heroes that doesn't have a known, or semi celbrity identity behind his mask.
That whole entire Cadmus story that started with The Question was one of the greatest storylines EVER! I enjoyed every single storyline that The Question and Huntress were featured in. Man, JLU was simply the best cartoon EVER created! So many epic moments, like the battle between Superman & Captain Atom, Superman & Captain Marvel... I think it's time for me to breakout my JLU DVD set!
Having that feeling too, I also have the Justice League seasons as well as Unlimited. I guess what I loved the most about JLU was the Batman Beyond episodes. The way that series ended just felt like whiplash, it was too fast and too sudden. I always wondered what Terry would do after Bruce finally died at like 102 or something. When I saw he asked Dana to marry him AND she knew he was Batman, it was just awesome. I was 16 in 1999 when Batman Beyond came out and I loved the 16 year old Batman. I wish it was longer than three seasons. Sometimes I miss the early 2000's.
Superman v. Captain Marvel was pretty cringeworthy to me (and my wife and daughter can stand it even less) but otherwise, yes, the Cadmus arc was magnificent.
Whoever was in charge of the justice league cartoon the people that wrote the scripts the stories they should be in charge of doing the movies. JL and JLU was an excellent cartoon I miss it.
What makes it so amazing it that it's not even the ONLY moment that shows that. Legends. The whole Solomon Grundy story arc. The people who did this show knew their shit, no doubt.
To be fair back when this was being made wonder woman was human and got her powers from the tiara, gauntlets, clothes, and laso of truth. And if she fell in love or married a man she would lose her powers.
On Number 1: Unlimited also gave Arthur a better reason for why he lost his hand. This time it wasn't due to otherwise normal piranha (as a recall) being mind controlled to do so, but him making a difficult decision to save the life of his son (yes, someone tying down Aquaman would use some kind of metal that would resist his strength).
@@PrincessMatrix No, the creative team was clear that that pairing was messed up. Just because you show a relationship occur in your show (or make known that it occurred off-camera) doesn't mean you think the characters are doing the right thing. It's a dramatic choice.
WB and their writers should have based it on the Justice League DCAU overall. The first movie can be based on the Alien invasion of the first season. The sequel be based on Hawkgirl (or a member) betraying the league and invading the world with her/his people. With an epilogue showing the expansion of the league. While the third movie should take years later and be based on Darkseid trying to take over the world with the whole league trying to stop him. That would probably worked a lot better, and they could have expanded from there with the league members having their own movies (Green Arrow, Booster Gold, Black Canary, etc).
Fun fact DC made a brand new character named Naomi McDuffie, created by Bendis, who had her own comic before becoming a official member of the new Young Justice which is also written by Bendis, and it’s meant to be a nice tribute to Dwayne McDuffie. Though hopefully, when DC finally claim the rights for the Milestone characters from his widow so they can finally use them and stop letting these characters fade to obscurity
I met Michael Rosenbaum at a con once and asked him did he pull any of the Luthor he played on Smallville into playing Luthor in Flash's body. Sadly he said he had not, but still a nifty tidbit.
Nightwing made another cameo in Justice League, s1 ep24 The Savage Time pt1. Literally 7 mins in the ep he is one of the soldiers in Batman's army kissing Barbara. Its like a quick 2 seconds but they are both clearly draw to be them.
I totally agree about DC not taking advantage of John Stewart's popularity as Green Lantern from the cartoons, into the comics themselves. It was a missed opportunity indeed that made absolutely no sense to me then or now tbh.
Not gonna lie, when I saw the Aquaman episodes as a kid (I did not read comics and had no references to anything) that was probably one of the most intense things I had watched at the time. Namely the scene where Aquaman cuts off his own hand. Granted, all of JL struck me as way more intense than most kids shows I watched. I absolutely loved it. And I cannot believe that I felt the need to sneak into the basement when everyone was asleep because I was too ashamed to watch it in front of my parents.
I'd add that it's also great that The Terror Beyond and Wake the Dead being direct riffs on Marvel's "The Defenders" (Dr. Fate stands in for Dr. Strange, Aquaman for Namor, Solomon Grundy for Hulk, Hawkgirl for Nighthawk, and eventually Amazo for Silver Surfer) is a really fun bit of JL/JLU trivia.
Honorable mention: The robotic Justice Lord Flash created by Brainiac/Luthor in "Divided We Fall" is based on Professor Zoom, Flash's arch-enemy from the comics.
JLU is a fantastic show. The animation still holds up after all this time, especially proven when they brought that style back for Justice League Vs. The Fatal Five. Makes you wish they'd bring the show back altogether.
There was also an Aquaman embargo due to the life action pilot featuring the guy who went on to play Green Arrow on Smallville. Aquaman disappeared from the show during JLU, and Black Manta was replaced in one episode by the suspiciously similar Devil Ray.
My favorite part was the continuation of Supergirl's story which began on "Superman the Animated Series." We see Kara grow and blossom as both a young woman & a super heroine. This is arguably the best non-comic portrayal of Supergirl & that includes the current WB series.
One of the best things about the show was all the else-world episodes where they focused on lesser known characters and pockets of the DCU, I didn't like them much at first but after becoming a huge DCU nerd absolutely loved them.
Booster gold had an awesome episode. I also liked hawk and doves, and the one where shining knight and a couple other guys( cant remember their names) fought a mutated general eiling.
@@deeday763 Shining Knight, Vigilante, Green Arrow, Speedy, Crimson Avenger, Star Girl (Star Spangled Kid) and S.T.R.I.P.E. (Stripesy). They're actually a very unknown DC team called the Seven Soldiers of Victory, specifically, their first lineup.
The Enemy Below actually did a better explanation of how Aquaman lost his hand compared to the comics. Aquaman was seen as both noble and a badass in this story.
So basically, I owe JLA/U a great thanks for the return of Hal Jordan and the GL Corps because of their decision to include John Stewart in the show instead of the already debuted Kyle (from Superman Animated), who was the only GL in comics during this time period. Thank you so much. Thank you for also making Stewart a fellow Marine, and fleshing our his character further in this show.
I always thought that the Enemy Below was the better story on how Aquaman lost his hand/gained the hook, far better than the comic version. Doing what he had to in order to save his son ... powerful stuff.
I think it's more the blame of the generation making the shows. They're trying to baby the new generation instead of creating good more serious shows like the creators did 10-20 years ago
Even though they never got to make the Justice League film that was going to be based on this series, I have to say that the Justice League: The New Frontier movie that came out a couple years later had more than enough cool things about it to suit me.
BTAS, the two Justice League shows, STAS, Batman Beyond and Static Shock were the shows that have made me a DC over Marvel guy since as early as I can remember.
Seriously, i still can't believe The Question didn't got any more attention after JLU. I was SURE he would appear on Arrow at some point, he was perfect for that show.
The original Justice League theme song is so iconic, I cant listen to it without a shiver down my spine. That show along with other DC animated shows really entertained me all those years ago.
There are reasons I watched the DCAU from almost the time I moved to Texas in the early 90s and all the way thru to the end. It was some great story telling and compelling characters.
Actually, the Batman animated series' first episode was "The Cat and the Claw", which premiered on a Saturday morning, where as "On Leather Wings" premiered the next day, which was a Sunday evening, intended to see how the series would do at a time slot watched by mature audiences🤓🤓🤓🤓.
During the scene where Luthor tries to learn flash's secret identity, the flash is mid coitus with Tala in Luthor's body. They are barely subtle about it.
Favorite green arrow line. I’m paraphrasing here but he basically says I’m an old school lefty I believe the government should do for people what they can’t do for themselves. I love it.
How about the random appearances by other team iterations? For instance, the Detroit team defending the Satellite or the Seven Soldiers of Victory against the General.
Fun Fact: Justice League Season 2, Episodes 15 &16, "The Terror Beyond," is a direct Homage to the early 70's Avengers / Defenders War story, with the core of the original Defenders, Doc Strange, the Sub-Mariner, and The Hulk, replaced by Doc Fate, Aquaman, and Solomon Grundy.
It was the best of both worlds as they didn't have a problem with using ideas from the Comics. There's some Alan Moore in there I never thought I would see as a cartoon.
The thumbnail suggested that “the bat embargo” is on the list. Shows up but no mention of the “Aquaman embargo” due to the failed CW Mercy Reef spin-off of Smallville.
Actually, I think the producers just didn't like Aquaman and only used him in that episode because it was a great story and they could make Arthur a cool character, for a change.
Wonder Woman: This was the first time she had stole her armor and there wasn't a contest of all the amazons for the mantle of Wonder Woman. The movie even had her steal it but this was where all that originated from.
4:21 False. Dwayne McDuffie deserves significantly more praise than he gets. No amount of gushing about him can accurately reflect just how influential he was.
