No she straw-manned the question at the beginning so you're justified in seeing the argument as weak. The framing of the question would have the theists denying its claim. Although this is a standard question from believers, asking "what's there to prevent you from committing murder if you don't believe in god?" proves a lack of basic understanding of human psychology. Even animals don't run around randomly killing each other, let alone people, who have consistently and willingly organised themselves in communities based on partnership and communication throughout history. Murder happens either in the context of psychopathy or emotional distress (you feel like you're being denied something essential to your well being - sex, greed, revenge) and is exacerbated when a society has broken down (war, civil or otherwise). In other words, unless you're under real or perceived threat or have a severe personality disorder, you're going to want to work out your issues with others peacefully, regardless of what you believe in or don't believe in, because a) you intuitively understand that it's easier to live in a community, and b) because humans do genuinely enjoy social interactions and develop affection and empathy for one another.

I coin a new phrase “religio-politics,” which is the politics of religion aimed at psychological and social control of other men since the days of the unsophisticated pre-science tribalist hunter-gatherer up through the Agricultural Revolution and unfortunately into modern times. Sadly, amongst the many tragic flaws, misconceptions and errors of the Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Mormonism - are: 1) The religious institutionalized misogyny and suppression of normal healthy sexual behavior instead has encouraged throughout history, men making war not love. 2) That thick dusty old or ancient foundational proprietary religious tomes such as the Jewish Bible, the New Testament, the Quran and the Book of Mormon are in actuality desperate attempts by tribalist men to fashion a moral code, but more dangerously, the claim of exceptionalism and a claim on real estate (!). 3) The realization that threat and fear is the modus operandi of Abrahamic religion, and integral to that is the absurd and preposterous claim that there is life after death, and failure of faith causes annihilation in eternal flames of Hell. This rises to a crime against humanity.

The main basic fault of religious morality is the abdication of personal morality. There is no mystery regarding personal morality. If you have empathy for others you dont want to do what will cause others harm. This is what our evolution as a species has taught us. We learn this as children. But when you allow someone else to determine your morality it becomes deeply flawed by the absence of your reasoning and by those creating a morality fit other lives. A great example is not kill. There are many varied definitions of what it means to not kill. To you, taking another life is horrible. Another person making that judgement has an outside judgement of it. If you find yourself in a position regarding taking a life you have to make that choice. Having another person judge that based upon an imaginary friend is so far removed from reason and experience. Killing for nationalism, religion, racism, bigotry is always wrong. You would never do otherwise without those influences. Just as a child would never do those things for those reasons. No one has a perfect morality. We live in a world where we have to make hard choices. But substituting your learned morality for the morality of another is on the whole wrong. Youve given up what you know for the skewed beliefs of others.
@martinmoffat5417

If we didn’t have religions already “pre-made” for us then humans would invent them. Religions all start as doing something that will be good fortune for the tribe. Like dancing to being the rains. And when that doesn’t work they dance wearing red. And when that doesnt work they sacrifice a child, dance, and paint their faces blue. Then when it rains the next day it becomes a religious ritual the tribe does everytime they need something from “god”. Its built into human brains. Only reason and logic and science will overcome this irrationality.

The story about the neuroscientist who is fine with taking out every third eye of children has a potential explanation. If she is from a country that practices things like female genital mutilation, she has already been indoctrinated into the idea. If she herself was a victim of that, then her support of something so ridiculous is simply her own defense mechanism at how her body was mutilated in the name of religion. I'm not defending her position - only that she is exhibiting a primitive human defense mechanism. This is something that religion often relies upon to manipulate its victims.

religion is instinct rooted in a higher power. They all are simply rules about survival and reproduction that generally help people survive and reproduce more effectively thru cooperation which is something animals have figured out. All the stories have occured throughout human history and people shared them and learned which results were more beneficial to the individual and group as a whole. Survival of the fittest leaves you alone or dead while cooperation takes you to the moon.

Jesus is said to be born in a region referred to as Jewish Palestine. This strip of land is on the Mediterranean between Syria and Egypt. Scholars today estimate roughly 500,000 people lived in this area +/- 100,000. So why did God focus on this small bit of land and its inhabitants and ignore all of his other children? Why is there little to no reference in God's bible to the "others" he created? These two simple questions throw shade on the bible's validity. For example, at the time of Jesus' birth there were already 75 million people in India, 57.5 million in China, 56 million in Europe, 250 million in Africa, 55 million in South America and 35 million in North America ... for a grand total of over 1/2 billion. Yet God avoids them, never speaking to them, never providing commandments, yadda, yadda, yadda. Religion is bad. 👋😎 My 2-cents.

The WISDOM of MAN is NOTHING when saying there is NO GOD 1Corinthians 1:17-29) 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

Hi. I quite agree that the early iron age versions of God don't "cut the mustard", but why must we play the "religion versus science" game on the same old playing field those atavistic religions have dumped us on? I'm a scientific Theist, and I have no trouble requiting science with morality and ethics. "Honesty" is not only the personal ethic that we trust most in other people, but also the main ethic of science because it exposes truth. Honesty is to do with both types of reality, both material and ethical. This is why when someone says "to be perfectly honest----" or "absolutely honest", everyone knows exactly what they mean, even small children, and no religious indoctrinations or understanding of philosophical nuances is needed. Honesty is a universal ethic understood in all cultures. The other divider between right and wrong is malice, which is always wrong, and also easily recognizable. It's the opposite of kindness and goodwill. Dishonesty and malice always occur together, because secret malice uses dishonesty to hide behind. Dishonesty is always malicious because it seeks to deprive the deceived person of truth, and truth is also a scientific reality. Although I personally choose to believe in God, it's not necessary to believe in him/her in order to understand ethics and morality. One God at least is not so full of himself that he's slammed the door on non-believers. I suppose you could say he's more kind and honest than the other Gods. Cheers, P.R.

@philliprobinson7724
@philliprobinson7724 2 месяца назад
@@Sue-xv8os Hi Sue. Of course I skipped them, those are the "same old playing field" of interpreting ancient metaphorical analogies literally. Even when rejecting the idea of "God", our thinking has been put inside very old religious boxes. Your "good parts" still release a little information however, even if not of the direct and honest kind. "Following a pillar of fire at night, and a pillar of smoke by day" tells any forensic sociologist that the Hebrew tribe wasn't wandering in the desert for forty years, they were headed for the great Ptolemaic lighthouse at Alexandria on which a fire burned 24/7. It was there to guide ships, and please note that the camel is "the ship of the desert". If "the Lord" had intended them to wander the Sinai sands for 40 years he would have told them to take water-skins, but no, he told them to pillage the Egyptians of jewelry and fine clothing, the type of item that can be exchanged for water, food, and cash at any market town on the way to Alexandria. Clearly (to me at least), the exodus story is a cover-up, an "official and politically correct version" of an account of escaping slaves, written much later. The rod turning into a serpent may have its origins in the Hippocratic symbol used by the medical profession, two entwined snakes separating at the top of a rod. Like you I don't take the bible literally, but to simply divide your thinking into just two categories, "scientific" or "laughable" doesn't do justice to the knowledge we have. When dealing with twaddle, tommyrot, and balderdash, each has its own unique perspective from which much can be learned. In other words, rubbish can be prophetably recycled. Cheers, P.R.

@@philliprobinson7724 Honest question: If the book MEANT to read that the Hebrews were headed to the lighthouse yada yada -- why didn't it say that? Why call a ship a camel? The Hippocratic serpent on the rod originated in Greece so there's a big problem with the logistics of travel to get to your thoughts about it. And yes, there are parts in the book that are quite laughable, such as a woman turning to salt, or 2 bears mauling a bunch of mischievous kids. What'd they do -- stand in line & wait? Don't you think a book inspired by "The Word of God" should say what it means, for all time and for all people?

@@Sue-xv8os Hi Sue. A camel is called "the ship of the desert" because it carries goods across vast seas of sand to destinations that can only be reached by navigating by the stars.; just like ships! Hippocrates? The early bible was written in Greek because it was universal language of scholarship back then. Naturally Greek concepts flowed like water wherever people sought knowledge. (Google "Rosetta stone") Lot's wife turning to a pillar of salt refers to her trauma and bitterness at seeing all her friends and their children killed in a military operation against the city of Sodom. The story of Elijah's bears is just a dramatic way of teaching kids not to make fun of others because of their personal appearance, there are always consequences. HONESTY will be true for all time for all people, but it's the only moral concept that can be "nailed down" in simple concrete terms. (That's not a literal "nailed down".) All the more abstract ideas like love, humility, grace, etc, are better expressed in story-form. You are being too literal. Try reading poetry, it may give you another perspective. Cheers, P.R.

@@njhoepner Subjective is how you play the game. Objective is how the game is to be played. In this way objectivity is directly linked to design. If the universe was designed it follows that we are subject to the designers rules regardless as to whether we consider them moral or not. If on the other hand we are somehow born out of blind pitiless indifference then everything is permissible and nothing is truly good or evil but simply labels made up by those who wish to control you. This ideology binds us to the whims of those who hold power and there is no God to stop them. @@martinmoffat5417 You're redefining what "objective" and "subjective" mean to suit your argument. An objective morality, by the actual definition, is a standard not based on the will of any being - it stands on its own and is binding on all beings. If it is merely the will of some being, including some creator, then it is subjective by definition. If it is merely the will of said being, then indeed "good or evil are simply labels," in this case "made up" by the being that wants to control you. This being, of course, is a faith claim. The fact is that religions are human inventions, and the morals they preach are too. Their morality is therefore not only just as subjective as "secular" morality, it comes from the same source - it merely pretends to a higher source in order to reinforce the control attempt...and thus "disproportionately empowers" those clever enough to get themselves into the position of speaking for god or jesus or allah or whatever. It is completely obvious that the universe is completely indifferent to life, including us. In the bronze age this was less obvious, given how small their concept of it was and how immediate their "gods" were, being earth-dwelling anthropomorphic entities who walked around in gardens and lived in temples (including "Yahweh"). This conception is no longer tenable...we are on our own and have to deal with that reality - and I think we can.
