Shakey's was one of the first places to offer a Taco Pizza, which was out-of-this-world delicious. There's still one about a 40 minute drive from my house, but I haven't been to one in years. The one in the town where I grew up played 1920's silent comedies on a continuous loop in the dining room..Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin...great stuff!
most of these you have listed I would 100% wanna try, specially Geno's, Sambo, and Bonanza I remember Shakey's ads as a little kid.... I think there is still 1 or 2 nearby
In the area I lived we also had Straw hat pizza, which was very like shakey's, interior, movies, sometimes live music. I often wondered if they were an offshoot of Shakey's to allow more diners in an area. An odd one that showed up briefly was Taco charlie, which was literally taco bell with a different name. I think they were just a market test chain fronted by taco bell as ours just became a taco bell one day and nothing else changed.
I liked Sambo's Pancakes than Denny's 🤢 My favorite Bonanza and Shakey Pizza Palor and Fish & Chip than Long John silver I wish all classic will come back again by 2025 or so .🤞
no this is total bullshit, there was no racial anything here because no blacks, there was no discussion of race, nobody gave a shit because no blacks here. Sambo's was great for kids, but eventually adults become dissatisfied with food quality or service. They were all replaced by Denny's, which are still there to this day. Shakey's was awesome, but I'd only went to one which had old time black and white silent films, they made the pizza behind a glass window so kids could watch as they came in. Our one eventually had a coin op arcade area that nobody used. It's now a Mexican restaurant. If you look closely in Blade Runner (1982) you can see a Shakey's sign in the background.
No, unfortunately thats not entirely true. Although Sambos restaurant didnt engage in anything race related, those that make their living fomenting discord in the grievance industry made all kinds of ridiculous claims and spread destructive stories through their adherents. To support your statement, which I agree with, a person only has to look at the artwork in this video from 2:30-2:45. Sambo is Indian in the depiction and a relatively well to do one therefor high caste and very light skinned and not a reference to blacks (tigers dont even live in Africa). This didnt stop racist shakedown organizations like Rainbow/PUSH who were behind quite a few attacks on many American institutions from the 60s until sometime around 2000 making all kinds of accusations and threatening marches and law suits unless millions of dollars were donated to their cause. It wasnt until one large company (I dont remember, was it Dodge/Chrysler?) stood against them and society having finally had enough took the companies side. That also was pretty much the end of that particular type of organization that race baited for money and power. (They had to go underground and resurfaced as organizations like ACORN and some others but that is a whole separate discussion.)
