The entry at the number one spot is absolutely insane. Imagine being so intelligent that you create some thing that only works in theory, only to have later generations use that blueprint to create the very thing that was not possible in your time. My mind, it has been blown.

Best thing about Alley Cat is how brilliantly it was programmed, it's actually still playable on modern PC's without needing things like DosBox to slow down the clock speed of the PC (DosBox may be needed for compatibly for 16 bit software however). The programmer actually has the game slow down to something like 4 MHz or speed up to that if you were playing on slower hardware at the time, all while keeping the frame rate smooth.

The IGN Michonne score is most likely just an aggregate error no one bothered to fix. Most of the episodes fell in the 7s.

#1 is truly amazing to be honest. Reminds me of that Mitchell and Webb skit with a Renaissance inventor coming up with a computer mouse, can opener and Sky Digi box

I had that Mattel Autorace (yes I am that old) - it was brutally difficult to get a perfect run, but I did do eventually after hundreds of attempts. Dark Souls PAH!

Ada Lovelace is credited with writing the first computer program long before computers existed so Turing writing a video game before video game hardware existed seems completely reasonable to me.

It wasn't the "chess" part of the game that was "next level"...a text based game would have still been impressive, but workable. The plotting of "dots" on a CRT screen...I did that sort of programming in the 1970's. A HUGE PAIN and programming at the top levels was still having problem with text based...anything. That his work is even relatable is AMAZING and for anybody else I'd say "unreasonable".

@@sierrakobold6896 his wiki page says that he was taking hormones before his death. It was basically oestrogen, and he developed breast tissue before he died. Apparently his death may not have been suicide (although ruled as such at the time), some of his work at the time could have led to him inhaling cyanide vapour. Either way a sad end to a brilliant mind, and war hero.

Not only was Olympic Hockey Nagano ‘98 just Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ‘98 with a different license, but Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ‘98 was basically just the previous year’s Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey (itself notable for not only being a decent game, but the first title for the N64 to support four players) with some minor tweaks to the gameplay and AI.

Anyone interested in more background info on the very first video game should check out the video ‘The First Video Game’ by Ahoy. He came to a different conclusion on what the first video game should be, since he used a different definition of a video game than this video.

Oh Christ my roommate used to make about $1,000 A MONTH playing Maple Story and i have NO IDEA HOW THATS POSSIBLE.... But about 4 years ago he said the market wasnt what it used to be and stopped... it was obscene, tho cuz it was no longer a game at that point

Alley Cat was a really fun game. I played the DOS version. Lots of variety to the play, would have made a good arcade game. Wouldn’t mind seeing somebody port that.

There's a free fan-made Windows remake called Alley Cat Remeow Edition that's pretty good. It recreates all the original stages, and also invents a few new ones.

Since you guys covered the first recalled video game here, how about researching the first cancelled game that still made it to market? EA had that one NBA game (Live? Elite? I don't remember... its not sports time, so I'm not ready to go, lol. A quick youtube search makes me wanna say its NBA Elite '11) that was technically cancelled AFTER shipping some copies to retailers so _some_ people were able to get a copy legally, making it one of the rarest games in the world. Now I'm curious if there have been any other examples of that... probably around the video game crash in the early '80s, I suppose. Or right around the time when a failed console will call it quits and so a game'll sneak in a release _right_ at the last second? Those seem like the likeliest scenarios to me, but I really don't wanna do any research :P

The earliest I know of that might count is Propeller Arena for the Dreamcast. The game was finished and AFAIK shipped to retailers or at least ready to be shipped, IIRC it was supposed to release roughly mid-September 2001, then the 9/11 Attacks happened and the game cancelled because one of it´s levels was in a city, which felt inappropriate to release in a game about plane combat. To my knowledge no copies of it where actually sold at any store and one of the devs leaked it a couple of years later. The Dreamcast Version of Half-Life must have been stupidly close to getting released to the point that there was a Prima Strategy Guide for it being made, printed and sold at stores before the game itself got cancelled. Then there is the case of the N64 PAL Version of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine which was either finished or very close to being finished before getting cancelled and the N64 Version of 40 Winks aka Ruff & Tumble that got cancelled so close to release that it was already reviewed by a few magazines.

Ngl, I LOVE MapleStory. I was there during beta, pre big bang, the cap raise to 200 then 250. I met some real cool people on that game. Some that I even met irl because we found out we were in the same area. Good times F2. Never was a fan of the Gach tho.. I wonder if it's still going🤔

When you go to their landing page for the series the review score comes up as zero for some reason even though each episode was reviewed separately and given it’s own score. The lowest score was a 6.3 for the third episode, the first two scored a 7 and a 7.2.

I am confused how Ultima I, or even Akalabeth, does not count as an earlier example of an open-world game. Is it just because they change perspective between the overworld and the dungeons?

They're creating a silly standard of "fully scaled", but I'm pretty sure you can still find PLENTY of 8-bit computer games which would count by their standard in one way or another. A search without trying hard at all finds "The Wylde" from 1983, for example.

First company bought and buried by EA (possibly before they were going as EA and were Electronic Arts or EA Square whatever) First MMORPG? First game ported identically (meaning the hardware needs to be similar in capacity not like old systems when they are the "same" but literally cant even handle more than 6 colors) between 2 or more systems (why did they used to be entirely different games?)

"Zero implies... a complete failure of functionality." Why? That's an oddly specific interpretation. Maybe the review gives the score a zero when they think zero percent of gamers should play it. Reminds me of how some people think no game deserves a 100 because there's no such thing as a perfect game. Well, no, that just means your scale is stupid since it has an impossible number on it: a perfect score doesn't mean that the game is perfect, it just means that the game is among the best of the best.

@@FormulaicMosaic Too nihilistic. The point of a review is to transmit information, and interpretation is an essential part of that transmission. There's a reason why no one has even given a game a score of sin(e)*i.

@@yourgameisstupid This is kind of why I'd prefer a letter grading system (A+, C-, F). It allows for more wiggle room while still conveying how good/bad a game is.

@@yourgameisstupid You are right of course. If only there were some kind of accompanying “review text,” where one could find out more about a game. How well it plays and controls, maybe a bit on the length, difficulty and comparisons to other games in the genre. Perhaps some notes about the levels of polish and commentary on the art style and sound design? Alas, I shall surely not live to see such marvels, but a man may dream…
