LFA motor It's the most beautiful thing ever, if I'm not mistaken they made the 5.0 that is an all the Lexus F models too And I think they've change some of the sound for the LC 500

1NZ-FE powering Toyota Echo and Yaris since the year 2000 and is still on the new Toyota Yaris after nearly 20 years. Not the most powerful but extremely reliable engine in the subcompact class.

Compared to some other vehicles I've driven the 1NZ is impressive. I've driven cars that are in line 4s that have more HP but still have similar 0-60 time and sluggish acceleration. My Yaris surprisingly has a lot of wheel spin when I floor it. I floored it yesterday and the tires spun like crazy, and I smelt rubber, and no I didn't neutral drop it. Pretty impressive for a car with 106 HP...

7A-FE and 4A-FE in the 7th and 8th generation Corollas are also good engines. The cars that used them are 20+ years old now, and I still see them everywhere. It's thanks to this engine that has helped make the Corolla the best selling car around the world for the last 30 years

yes you are so right , i remember the little k 20 with a small 4 cylinder engine it was so reliable at the time and it was fast ,the engines is what made toyota the leader as its the engine that determines the car ,when it comes to reliability , we had the toyota 2T and indeed the 3T the 18 RG , they were great engines also

Another monster engine left out from this list is the 2UR-GSE 5.0L V8, which is found in the ISF, GSF, RCF, and LC500. It currently pumps out around 470hp stock and looks to be the new flagship performance engine set to continue that Toyota/Lexus engine legacy.

An older engine from Toyota that for the day that was incredible, the 3 T. A 1.8 liter that could be built to over 300 hp without much trouble. 22 R is a fantastic engine that was helped by the fact that the engine series has been in constant evolution since the sixties starting with the 18 R.

So good that they are now using BMW engines gearboxs, chassis interiors and being built by BMW lol How the mighty have fallen, 5 years ago Id have agreed with you, but Toyota as we no it is just another corporate! If you believe it’s the same as 10years a go or even 20 years ago you are just as empty as the corporate suckers that they are, blood suckers, Toyota have had more recalls in the last 10years than in its history! Most aren’t made in Japan it’s a name only, wake up to what brands have become!

They are only using BMW engines in the new Supra which has been a big mistake for them. Already having problems with it.. guess they should have done the engine in house or with Yamaha. Haters are gonna hate

I really liked seeing the 10 and 12 cylinder engines. My 3RZ may be a bit underpowered, in my 2004 Tacoma, but during 14 years of ownership I've never had a single problem with it. I've only got 106,000 miles on it. I bet it will go 2 or 3 times farther.

The LFA has my heart because of the quality V10 and the amazing exhaust system. What a sound! I can vouch for the 3 banger 1KR-FE as I own a Peugeot 107 with one. Surprisingly powerful (for an N/A 3 banger), and the sound is mint compared to a 4 banger of its size. It's a baby V6. It's a big shame they didn't turbo or supercharge them in the small cars. The small cars would be rapid if they had of been.

I agree on the cost point. A lot of people want an ultra quick car for the money instead of one that sounds fantastic. Looks are obviously in the eyes of the beholder and I personally like the looks of the LFA, then again... I like Fiat Coupes which most people say are hideous too.

It has a very smart and modern turbo. The BMW twin scroll is a single turbo which acts a bit like a bi turbo that uses flaps to control the exhaust gas to hit the desired spot on the turbine. The 1 series chassis is not too heavy so it is even relatively quick and agile (RWD). It does 0-100km/h in 8.5s and runs 210km/h, which is pretty solid for an eco friendly car.

omnipotentum yeah OK they’re slow they don’t gap piece of shit German cars day in and day out. and the reason that the 2jz It’s such a popular racing engine is because it can be run reliably with immense amount of power. they wouldn’t be sought after it wouldn’t be used by racing teams if it were unreliable under high horse power outputs. And no I wouldn’t call Hyundai fast And I also wouldn’t compare their econo minded engines to the sports car engines that we are talking about. they are meant to accomplish two different things. And that’s not to say that Toyotas can’t be slow Tacoma‘s are slow tundras are slow Camrys and corollas are slow but those cars aren’t meant to be fast. the cars that Toyota has built with speed in mind have accomplished just that and they’re reliable when they do it

My dad used to own a Toyota Hilux (badged as just Truck in the N.A. market) with a 22R-E motor under the hood. That truck wasn't fast by any stretch of the imagination, but kick it into 4WD low and you could almost move mountains with it and get just about anywhere you wanted to go. Dad used to brag he could beat a Humvee at an off-road competition by just picking a trail with obstacles spaced just wide enough to clear his truck's mirrors because of how narrow the Hilux was in the early 90s. Over 300,000 miles later and what ultimately did the engine in was a crack in the block that leaked coolant right into the oil. I've always wanted to pick up a crew cab 4WD Hilux as a do-anything truck ever since.

Aaaagreed. It's a very hardy and durable motor. For a truck whose purpose is to just haul a bunch of stuff from A to B, you don't need a fast motor. Just one with enough torque to get you rolling without breaking a sweat. :)

My first relatively fast car was a Toyota corolla/sprinter with a 4age. An ae92 I think. Built in 1988. I originally bought it to put the engine in my Suzuki but decided I couldn't take a classic off the road.

Good selection. My favourite will always be the old 18RG. At a time in the 80s when Toyotas in Australia had horrible boring underpowered 18R engines, people started importing used 18RG engines from Japan by the shipping container load. For not much coin at all, they transformed RN46 Hiluxes, RT104 Coronas and many 2 litre Celicas from horribly boring shitboxes into fun street machines. The 4AGE was also revolutionary for its time and embarrassed many 6cyl and even V8 Holden and Ford owners off the lights.

rysho True. But not so true for the pre-03 engines. I just pulled a 1zz out of my 00 Celica last year because it drank oil like a wwii battleship, kept fowling plugs, idled pretty bad as a result, and almost took out my cat. I used to joke around when asked what type of fuel I run I would say "I run mix". Got the 2ZZ in there now. Aside from still being underpowered imo, the car does run great. Lift is fun and the 6spd is even funner.

yh but some of the pre-03 1zzfe engines used oil even after just 35-40k miles. it was a big issue and some cars were recalled.

Although being pretty underrated I think the 1nz-fe should be on this list because it can push decent power especially when you consider the weight (or lack there of) of it was used in as well as it being super reliable even by toyota standards. It still gets used in cars to this day.

Why didn't you mention the 1MZ-FE V6? I mean since its introduction 1992 in both the Lexus ES, and RX 300, Toyota Avalon, and the V6 Camry. The engineers at Toyota designed and built the 1MZ to be the most powerful, yet very durable engine for the time! I drive a 2nd gen Avalon with the 1MZ-FE V6, with close to 200K on the clock! VisioRacer perhaps you should do a video segment on the legendary 1MZ-FE engine. Make a tribute video for all the cars that Toyota put the 1MZ-FE in. :-)

I have a 00 Camry with a 1mz and E153 manual trans. I have 320000 miles on it and have never had the engine open (heads have never been off obviously oil pan gasket, valve covers and intake have needed to be serviced) my first Toyota after a slew of accords, DSM s and Nissan trucks and it's been my favorite car. As long as you service it by the book ( I'm a mechanic by trade) it will outlive most anything.

All of these engines deserved their spots on this list, but you can't forget about some of the great diesel engines toyota has made over the years, such as the D-4D (obviously) and basically every diesel engine found in a land cruiser.

The 5VZ-FE is a little beast. It's only 3.4 liters, but its deep growl and low end torque make it the perfect engine for the first generation Tacoma. When you drive an automatic Tacoma V6 normally in town, it likes to shift gears within like 300 RPM of each shift because it doesn't need to rev much at all to move briskly with traffic. That's what I call a flat torque curve.

I sort of disagree with the reliability of the FA20/4U-GSE. This is from personal experience from working in a subaru dealer in Finland and what I commonly see happen to these motors. The major Achilles heel to this motor is the complex fuel injection system. It is both direct and indirect injected meaning 2 injectors per cylinder. What happens with that system is that the fuel plump is not too keen to the task for delivering fuel for 8 injectors at once at high load, and- you guessed it, the engine leans out and self destructs. The reason why I don't fully disagree is because it's an easily Correctable issue by just adding a better high performance fuel pump. If it's stock, as long as you are easy on it the engine will do fine, but if you are in 6th gear and mash the gas pedal, you are going to fuel starve the engine.

You forgot to include Toyota's indestructible and reliable engine of all time the L series diesel. Yeah... it's a bit under powered,BUT it can't be killed as proven by Top Gear. these engines can last more than 900,000 km's. Some even install aftermarket turbo's on these things which result to cracked head gaskets. Personally I would prefer the N/A one's. Because you can feel the power the engine has to give without the help of a turbo.

Our old work had a Hilux with the 5L-E motor and it did struggle with the loads that the other utes pulled with relative ease (Holden/Isuzu Rodeo 2.5L TD and a couple of 2.5L TD Ford Couriers), but good god was that thing bulletproof. Tougher than a coffin nail

I have a fortuner 2010 with 2.7 liter 2tr-fe engine. Not the fastest but after 10 years mileage is the same at day 1. Super reliable with casual oil change.

The 4U-GSE isn’t really a Toyota engine, it’s just Toyota’s designation for the FA20D. It’s still a Subaru engine in the end BC Toyota basically just added the D4S injection system. However, Toyota did the styling for the FRS/BRZ twins.

Oscar Thorpe yeah both are really good platforms for the 2zz. the thing though is that the lift is at 6200 rpms, so you really have to rev these things, but it’s always fun to do haha

Troopie 4.2 six diesel. Slow, mega grunt off idle permenantly carrying a ton plus towing 2 ton regularly. 680000 km. Not a single issue of note. Love it
