One of the most common intrusive questions that many of us in wheelchairs encounter is: 'How did you end up in a wheelchair?'
While it's crucial to encourage people to use more respectful language, today, we're going to empower ourselves to take agency and control the narrative politely and gracefully, and see opportunities to make meaningful connections with others.
And also learn to be firm and honest if we want to end an unwanted conversation

I appreciate you leading with redirection to topics that will foster a genuine connection! It’s nice to see responses that aren’t educational or snappy comebacks, despite how fun it can be to snark. I live in the Bible Belt in the US, so I don’t dare offer to proselytize, especially as someone who is no longer Christian. 😅 On a different topic, I love your ceiling decor! Is that a projector, or something else? I’m a part time electric wheelchair user with slow deterioration of function due to chronic illness. It’s so interesting to see which things we have in common, and where we differ. Thank you for doing what you do! Educational content by other wheelchair users and people in the disability and chronic illness community have been a lifeline for me. I appreciate you using your time and energy to do this.

Firstly, thanks so much for your kind words and positive feedback, I really feel that I’m trying to create valuable resources for those in the SCI community. There was a projector in the background of this video, it was a gift, but I rarely use it these days. I hope you enjoy the other videos and they resonate with you as much as this one 😊✌️

You're hilarious and awesome in so many ways lol. I love that you decide on any given day whether you're gonna tell a total fib or turn the question on the other person lol. Shutting a conversation down with an "I don't want to continue this conversation with you" makes me physically uncomfortable lol. I am absolutely spineless when it comes to telling people to mind their own business.

I thought we might see Brittney with you on this video because she has IMHO an interesting take on this. But you sure have an interesting way of handling this.

Really good that you address this topic. Most people do videos about practical tips, this was so refreshing. And very good tips!

Thanks, I really appreciate that comment. I’ve been feeling a bit unmotivated with RU-vid recently and comments like this help a lot. Thank you ❤️✌️

I get a kick when people (generally the older population) ask "What happened to you" I look at them and say "nothing. What happened to you?" LOL.THEN I'll smile and say if you have time I would love to share my story..

Great idea! With kids it’s a little different. Sometimes I use the analogy of a motorway with a traffic jam

My go-to is “Its a hell of a story, and one that needs to be earned.” And depending on how spicy I’m feeling, I follow it up with something similar to your suggestions to either shut down the conversation, or open the door for something more meaningful.

As an able bodied person, i often find myself extremely curious and genuinely awed by the resilience of disabled persons. I cant speak for everyone, but for myself, iv never really considered the specific emotional impact (trauma, ptsd etc.) of these questions. I don't ask, because i just know its impolite and probably sensitive. Is there any way that you would recommend broaching these topics in a respectful way, or is it better to just ignore it completely and talk about the weather..or something else.

Great question. I’m sure there’s a time and place for talking about “how” someone gets injured, but opening with that question is really insensitive. I think if someone is ready to share, then they will offer their story voluntarily. I’m not sure if there is a one size fits all answer to this question, I guess you’ll just have to gauge how the other person reacts. There is a huge difference between talking about ones experience with a wheelchair, for example: “navigating these bumpy streets must be a quite a challenge…” , which I can imagine would come across as inquisitive and harmless, yet there are still some folk who would rather not talk about wheelchair stuff, I can’t speak for the whole community, so I just don’t know. I would probably say, put yourself in the others place and ask yourself, how would I want to be communicated with? I hope this helps 😊❤️✌️

thx. although this vid (and others) address things from your perspective and aim to help other disable people, they have been very informative and enlightening to me. “navigating these bumpy streets must be a quite a challenge…” ..this was a great example btw!.@@FreddotheWheelchairGuy

Great video again! I once told someone I got trampled by a herd of ostriches but when they looked at me funny I felt like a dick, recanted and went with the real story. I do love your responses, though, and I’m going to try some next time. (I’ve only been hurt 22 months so I still kinda freeze and go with it when people ask)
