"Just remind yourself that you have paid enough."... enough of your money, enough of your time, enough of your space, enough of your emotions by keeping something you don't need, want or love. This thought really got to me.

Me too. It was like giving REAL permission, unlike some professionals who simpky state, 'I give you permission.' The two aren't the same.
@globalmuffin2

this resonated with me too, but in my particular situation I gained weight and the clothes don't fit anymore. I'd happily wear them, but they don't fit anymore. It's not that I don't like them. So it's not something to simply trash. And I don't have time to sell them. And I don't have the guarantee of tomorrow and I am thinking that I might get so poor that one day I might need to sell those clothes. I believe that throwing good things away it's a sin that will come and get you at some point.
@CeciliasMuse
@CeciliasMuse 2 года назад
@@globalmuffin2 Letting go of something doesn't have to mean turning it into trash (I agree, that should always be the last choice). Would it be an option for you to donate? Another idea: in my friend group we organise clothing swap parties. That way, you get to see how happy someone else is with your item, and how good/'right' it looks on them. It makes it so much easier to let go - fun even! And perhaps you'll find something beautiful that suits you as you are now. Clothing swaps also really helped me with my fear of 'maybe not having enough' in the future. If it's really hard to part with something, you can always agree that you can ask it back if you have any regrets later (my experience: you won't! but the idea of 'just trying it out for now' helps). And lastly - it's really fun to have an adult dressing up party, trying on weird combinations or things you'd usually never wear, giving each other compliments and advice, etc :)
@globalmuffin2
@globalmuffin2 2 года назад
@@CeciliasMuse i've seen a documentary where not even third world countries accept our crap anymore, too many clothes are purged there and they can't absorb all those clothes. as about swapping, it is unhygienic and always some (the gutty ones) will get the good things and others (the weak ones) will just politely say that it's fine with what they've gotten. been through that, didn't work well. the only solution is to alter the clothes that you already have, instead of buying new ones. and for this you need to not throw away almost anything, since clothes that don't fit anymore (are too small) can be fixed (enlarged) with the fabric from the clothes that you are certain that you won't wear again. you can also make bags and other things from pieces of fabric sewn together. i have such a bag which looks awesome. minimalism as throwing things away is a very bad concept. throwing things away is waste. this is not how we'll save the planet or the human species, but taking advantage of our creative mind and hands. we as a species throw away too much, too fast, this is our problem actually.

I was so scared to get rid of things in the beginning because "what if" but after I started making space to breathe I realized I had very little that I valued over that calm space. After bags and piles and countless trips to goodwill I can barely remember what was in any of those decluttering piles. I shutter when I see those pictures of before the purges and I realize I was drowning in things that held so much guilt and clutter in my mind always

Isn't it amazing how we have a hard time remembering what we just donated? Rarely do I regret giving something away. Funny story though. I donated some things one day. During the next week or so, my son went to the place I donated to. He found this cute little vase and surprised me for my birthday. We all had a good laugh when I told him that was the same vase I had donated! I now have it on my shelf, and will probably always keep it. Somehow it was meant to come back to me.

Sitting here at 4:30 am and you have opened my eyes. You have given a name to so many of my excuses. The guilt has been my strongest prisoner. I am holding on to things because I paid so much for them and friends and family tell me that I would be crazy to let them go. At least once a week, I look at my unloved and unnecessary pieces of furniture and realize that I do not love, need, or want them. I keep telling myself that I cannot just give them away for free. Your calm, yet power packed advice is just what I needed to hear. This helped me to realize that I am still paying for them. My mind is made up. I don't have to ask permission. I am the owner. I will be donating all of these things to a family that needs them. Just the thought of this makes me feel free. I am now a subscriber and I am going to share you with all of my family and friends. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

the part that resonated the most with me was "If something does not add value to your life, then don't give it the privilege of entering your life". I think this isn't just true of stuff and things, but the people we hang out with and activities we participate in too. Just as you said in your point about "dump the guilt", the time and energy that we choose to give is valuable and should be applying this to all aspects of life, not just physical stuff. Great video~!

Decluttering as you live really resonated with me! I feel like there is pressure to do a purge, but sometimes items are useful as life changes! Or taking time to find the right home for an item. I replaced the dining table in my home because it was much too big for myself living alone. I haven't posted the old one for sale yet but turns out, my friend just bought a new home and needs furniture. He is happily taking the table when he gets the keys to his home!

I started doing this in the ʻ90s when the "simplicity" books started coming out. I had a busy, cluttered "country kitchen" and country style decor -- and out it had to go, most of it. I keep doing it for the next area of my life where I buy too much or store too much. Constant process. For me, decluttering "on the exterior" is symbolic of whatʻs going on inside me. When I purge "outside" Iʻm also doing a big purge within. Itʻs easy for me, now, to let go of stuff I only recently paid a lot of money for. I think itʻs partly genetic. My mom simply could not, would not, let go of anything.
@karenjohannessen8987

Perhaps not 'genetic', but definitely 'inherited'! My Mom grew up during the Great Depression, so the "fear of lack" was strong with her, and that's how I learned to be. UnLearning, now!

The Endowment Effect is a really good angle on explaining a main reason people hang onto things. When I help a friend who is drowning in things, she often feels the need to come up with a “defense,” I think just because she owns it, not because she uses it or is really glad to have it. Another good question is, “If I didn’t already own this, would I buy it?”

The ‘sunken cost fallacy’ can be used for anything. Not just items. Say your job: you’ve spent so much time working for that company and have gotten so far within it, yet you hate it. But you think “I might as well not loose everything I’ve worked for and stay” But you’d be happy at another even if you started lower on the podium.

I’m just starting and the hard part was letting go of my clothes and shoes from my cluttered wardrobe but you are so right it wasn’t doing me any good keeping the clutter and once I finally got rid of most I felt so much better so now the ball is rolling and I think my next steps won’t be as hard xxx

My shoes were all brittle and cracked. All the plastic/vinyl parts were destroyed. There was nothing to keep. All I have now are boots, sneakers, & 1 pair of sandals. Shoes don't keep.

Love your videos! Watching from Argentina, when I moved from the states with two kids I only moved with six suitcases. I try really hard not to buy stuff! We eventually will leave and my goal is to leave with six suitcases!!

I live in Argentina and asked two of my nephews that went to live to Canada and the States how much did they take with them: a medium case and a backpack. What about childhood mementoes: photographs in their iPads.

This is so spot on. I'm been on a minimalism journey for a couple years now and RU-vid just suggested your channel since I watch a few others that talk about minimalism. Everyone brings such a fresh new perspective. I love what you said about needing to understand why we want stuff in the first place- what is behind that, for each one of us. Also- GRATITUDE for what we already have. Love love love this video and you have a new instant fan!

There is so much about this video that moved me, starting with your warm and compassionate presence, Ronald. I can hardly think of a better way to be welcomed into the exploration of self and environment that is decluttering and learning to own things in an intentional way. Your words on the cost of holding onto un-useful things particularly speak to me at this moment. "You have paid enough." An invitation to release myself from the bondage that comes from having to care for so many things that are not serving me. Thank you.

I clicked on your video because you are a man in a sea of women making decluttering videos, haha. You have such a nice quality about you, and the content was beyond practicality - it was pure wisdom :) Thank you for sharing your tips! I found them all useful, as a whole. I kinda tend to realize what hit me most, later on down the line, lol.

I absolutely loved the way you laid all of this out! It's not a perspective on owning less that I've heard yet, and you made it seem so simple if taken one step at a time. The part about gratitude really got me thinking. I looked at something that I almost excessively obsessed over until I got what I wanted. Now that I'm grateful for what I have all of my energy is spent elsewhere, and I just look at said thing with gratitude. Great video, man. Keep it up!

Perfect timing! I've been going through a decluttering phase and at the same time, I'm also learning not to fill up all that space I've created by buying MORE stuff to fill that empty space. It's a process - this is where the "letting go" mindset comes in. Great video, Ronald!

Great video. The advice of starting while you live is so on point. I started with one drawer and it snowballed into finishing an entire room in a day. I tackled small spaces based on what stressed me out. It was more than cathartic. Have a lot more spaces to go but the overall feel is lightness. I spend so much less time tidying. How to get my toddlers on board is the next challenge!

Just came across this video of yours and you transmit a sense of calmness when you speak, I haven’t heard of many of these minimalist perspectives before, like things not holding on to su but us instead being the ones with a tight grip, I really like the metaphor and your vision.
