This week we're looking at Québec's Highway Safety Code to see what laws are on the books that residents and visitors should know when driving in La Belle Province.
PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/stores/prn
The Québec Highway Safety Code regulates what is legal and illegal on the roads and highways of Québec, but some laws seem to be ignored in mass, while others differ from surrounding juristictions. We go over the top 10 laws that you might not have known about whether you're travelling to/through Québec, you're planning to move here from another province, or you've been here your whole life.
Some of the laws we cover include motorcycle lane-splitting, window tint, slow moving farm vehicles, when to pass other motorists, what to do when an emergency vehicle is approaching, and how to legally operate your horn. All of these laws are provided in their full text throughout the video and can be accessed by visiting the Gouvernement du Québec's website or the Société de l'Assurance Automobile du Québec.

People are no longer able to drive the speed limit because the roads are in such a poor shape in QC.

I hear that. I’ve noticed in my region a number of road improvement projects over the past couple months, the worst roads in my town have all been repaved it are in the process of being done.

Dude i just drove back and forth to a mountain lake chalet twice in a day which's main road is closed so everyone is using this poor old beaten dirt path, there are no signs, except a * road closed* when you get on it which you have to to ignore to keep climbing like a mad person, and fuck now any asphalted road with signs that is mildly straight feels like luxury

more or less most of those rules apply in italy, most notably exception lane splitting, the main purpose of scooters and motorcycles is lane splitting traffic :D and as a motorcyclist myself is very satisfating pass all of them. during past weeks, several people use very low traffic on the road not to slowing down, but to increase speed, 90 speed limit? no problem drive well over 100...

I bet! I think only a few places here in North America allow lane splitting, it’s not something I’ve looked into though.

Yeah, I don't know why it's so bad in Eastern ontario. Even on a four-lane highway road (actually stroad, but whatever), but you're required to come to complete stop and I will come to a stop in the right-hand Lane for an oncoming emergency vehicle even if there is no traffic I'll have someone behind me with no intention of stopping coming dangerously close to rear-ending me because they weren't thinking I was going to come to a complete stop, EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE LAW TO MOVE OVER AND **STOP**

I wish there was an easy way to remove ice from your car. Scraping works fine on windows but the paint doesn't take it too well. Also smashing it can be hard if the ice is thick.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 4 года назад
The only thing I’ve found that works better, better being the operative word over scratching the paint, is a foam scraper. It’s softer on the paint and didn’t scratch during the 3 winters I’d use it, it just didn’t form to the curves as well so it would take a little longer to clear it off.
@hene193

PRN_TestDrive Yup I have used foam covered stick to smash the ice. I kinda wish there was an heater which could melt a bit of the ice so it would be easy to wipe off.

I actually got a ticket for snow covering my car. It was my bad because the back window really was fully covered (the cop who stopped me told me that he followed me a while with his light flashing and I didn't stop because I couldn't see). My argument was that it was a rental and the car rental place didn't give me a brash.
@PRNTestDrive

I had that happen to me once in Alberta, the lack of a brush. Around the time I started PRN I was working for IBM, was sent out to Calgary during a snow storm and my little Mazda3 from Enterprise had summer tires and no snow brush. That was a lot of fun.

I lived in Quebec for years and then moved to Ontario. I generally think people in Quebec pull over for emergency vehicle...(It's often hard to even pull over in Montreal tho)...matter of fact, I do think people in Quebec drive better than ontarians. Especially during winter...(I have seen more idiot drivers in Ontario than Quebec. also, people are more obedient to speed limits in Quebec than Ontario, when I moved to Ontario a few years ago, I was often the slowest car on the road because I was used to follow the speed limit... 😄 i don't have a thing for quebecers and my experience might be unique lol, but it's just my experience considering that I have lived in both provinces for a few years.

Not likely, typically you need to have insurance for the jurisdiction you reside in. If you somehow have a Quebec driver's license then you'd be able to get insurance here in the province. Some exceptions may exist, I was able to get insurance on my BMW 7 Series when I moved here from Desjardins in Quebec despite the BMW still being registered in Ontario, but my license itself was issued by Quebec so I had an address here.

It’s true about the inspections, at least for yearly inspections. If a vehicle is being registered that was brought in from out of province or hasn’t been licensed in more than 24 months you need to do an inspection.

Here in germany , people honk the horn at any occasion, when they have to wait a second due to the traffic situation , even to greet people , they know, walking on the sidewalk, police had to be everywhere to fine drivers, what nonsense

i got my probationary license 3 weeks ago and there were 2 police cars stopped on the side of the road. one of them who had stopped someone and one of them was waiting there, to stop someone. I had just merged onto the highway and so many cars were going into the left lane and i had no way of getting into the left lane because cars were going fast and io was already going slow because i saw a police car. the police car ended top taking all my demerit points away and giving me a 315$ ticket. He could've been nice and taken off 1-2 since i just got my license BUT NOOOO he had to be an ass and take my driving privileges away. but we are contesting it
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 2 года назад
That definitely sounds like a shitty situation, and I feel for you. Often I find that situations like that are unavoidable, there are plenty of times I've tried to merge on the highway and wasn't given room to get on, even at night when that driver could have moved into the other lane. I would definitely take this to court and fight it, even if you still have to pay a fine it's best to go in and explain your side of the story. I hope it works out for you.

What about MMA enclosed mobility scooters. Are the legal to use on the sidewalks? Example the shoprider4 flagship s mobility scooter. Is very small. 2 person can only fit inside and use. I'm thinking of moving to Montreal but there's no mention if a standard sized scooter with door's and roof are legal the scooter protects and keeps user safe and warm with heater, windshield wiper heat also defrost windows keeping them clear. Want to buy one as 4mph speed for sidewalks meets Quebec regulations . Plus reply asap. You can google what it looks like thank you Cheers m8 😊

You are stating a lot of HIGHWAY rules like they apply to ROADs/streets rules. Which they DONT Some of them do but you're NOT going to get pulled over for going 60km/h in a 90km/h zone but you might if you're going like 50km/h on a 100km/h open highway
@PRNTestDrive

That's why Québec's autoroutes all have maximum and minimum speed postings, most of them are 60km/h minimum, 100km/h maximum, so doing 50kph on the autoroute on a clear day will absolutely get you pulled over. I went through the ENTIRE highway safety legislation when putting together this video.
