Saying Jake Roberts was above titles is a very good way of putting it. Every once in a long while, someone like that comes along, where they just don't get titles because they don't need help from those props to get/stay over.
No shit. He was pretty freaking popular his whole entire wwf run. And always super over as a heel too. He should've made millions. But I guess Bill Watts did not feel that way, unfortunately for Jake.
I'm so glad that Vader made the list. I know HBK made sure it didn't happen, but The fact that Vader wasnt WWE Champion in the mid 90's is inexcusable.
Vader would have made less money as champ as Michaels. At least Michaels could sell merch to little girls and rubes but Vader wasn't marketable. In WCW, and Japan he was a big bad monster but in WWF he was just a big dude with a jockstrap on his head. Heel champions didn't draw flies in 95-97.
@@petesmart1983 Vince's guys were the ones who made him money. Dusty and Vader wouldn't have drawn as champions and that's why they never won gold. Simple.
He held wcw world championship but uk he was the shit all over and in WWE he was kicking ass I mean he had ability like defensive tackle that ran a 4.3
Bryan G Bigelow and Vader were IWGP Tag Team champions in New Japan Pro Wrestling in early 1992 winning them from Hiroshi Hase and Great Muta and dropped the titles to the Steiners in mid 1992 . (source Pro wrestling Illustrated Wrestling Almanac 1998 edition)
Eric Thomas Bigelow had two runs in WWF as it was then the first was short from mid 1987 to early 1988 his second was from late 1992 to late 1995 I'd say his second run was a fairly long time .
King Kong Bundy was also known for winning the WCWA World Heavyweight Championship twice. The first time he lost the title was at the "Fritz Von Erich Retirement Show" on my birthday in '82.
Twice by first winning a tournament after Warrior vacated the Intercontinental title after winning the WWF World title from Hogan he beat Tito Santana in the final , lost he belt to Texas Tornado at SummerSlam 1990 and regained it from Tornado just after Survivor Series 1990 .
True because the WWE been around since since Vince McMahon Sr and his Capitol Wrestling promotion broke away from the NWA in 1963 and renamed it World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) since then many titles have come and gone and WWE has had 2 other name changes World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) .
YES make it happen WWE Jerry Lawler for WWE 24/7 Champion just once even for like a second just so he can have a title of some kind in WWE even if he is just gonna lose the title while on his way somewhere like in the video i watched yesterday LOL
They aren't wrong about Jake. I liked him. First heel I ever liked. When I was a kid. When it wasn't cool to like heels. There was just something about his promo and general aura. Everyone else was animated and turned up to 11. He stood out by not standing out.
Yup, I can remember being a huge fan of his. I get that his drug problems are the excuse they use for not giving him a title, but considering the number of addicts they have put titles on, it's not a good one.
@@aaronreynolds1504 Yeah... But in that Era, who didn't? Saying a wrestler liked the nose candy in the late 80s/early 90s would be like saying wrestlers of any Era like to hit the gym and the tanning salon.
@@BabysitterSky like he would care. he could get a job in any company and no other promoter would care if he kicked shawn michael's ass in the locker room. people knew what a fuck-wad he was.
Lawler was also the AWA champion. While it was on its downfall at the time it was still one of the big 3. Growing up in Missouri I had never even heard of Lawler other than seeing his name in PWI until he won the AWA title. The wrestling on tv here was WWF, NWA, AWA, World Class, and the UWF.
duggan also held the wcw world tv title when he found it in a trash can after nash and hall threw it in the can like a basketball... horrible wcw memories i had
Yeah Herd was the main reason, but Dusty was on the booking committee and he and Flair used to battle a lot backstage in a what was basically a big dick swinging competition.
King Kong Bundy had a good career up until 1988 or so. He had been turned into a monster heel in the Texas territory, World Class Championship Wrestling. And Bundy really grew into that monster heel role including adding the 5 count to his repertoire, in Georgia Championship Wrestling. He became a huge monster in Georgia, and was even involved in an angle where he was a tweener heel against Paul Ellering during the initial run of the Road Warriors and the Legion of Doom stable that included the Paul Ellering, the Road Warriors, Jake Roberts amongst others. Then he went to the WWF and had his legendary squash match against SD Jones at Wrestlemania 1 and he had established himself as a top monster heel in pro wrestling. By 1985-86, Bundy was involved in feuds with the two biggest babyfaces in pro wrestling at the time....Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan. And then there was the 6-Man mixed tag w/midgets against a horrible performer (Hillbilly Jim) and by 1988.....poof.....he was gone. Vince dropped the ball with Bundy in my opinion.
A number of the men on this list were champions in the NWA or WCW (Ronnie Garvin, Vader, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Paul Ordorff, Dusty Rhodes). Much like Jerry Lawler, Jake the Snake Roberts won multiple titles outside of the WWF.
It's sort of expected that almost everyone will get a championship sometime, but I think that's wrong, not everyone needs a title, and it's silly how WWE gives championships out like candy to whatever new guy comes to the company.
Picture this: Lawler cheap shots R-Truth from behind and wins the 24/7 championship, then Mojo comes out menacingly, and Lawler tells him "please don't hurt me, I'm an old man" and lays down for him.
If in not mistaken if The King Jerry Lawler fights another match, he will have wrestled a match consecutively every year for fifty years professionally
Jake the Snake is the real reason I watched wrestling back in the early 90's the feud that never happened? Hulkster and the Snake should have been done I mean high praise for both men but you need a lovable villain to take on a hero make story flow work
If anyone is wondering about the Steve Austin Jim Duggan match. I am not joking here the match goes for like 20 seconds, and that might be too long when I think about it. And the crowd is losing their mind and he beats. By just going just a cover. Like just a splash a standing splash. But just looks like a really over the top cover. I’m not joking.
This list could fill quite a few videos since the WWE has been going since 1963 several titles have come and gone and WWE has had 3 name changes since it broke away from the NWA in 1963 the name changes are World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
For 99% of his career, Dusty Rhodes was an NWA guy and even when he was in WWF/E in very brief stints, he was still considered an NWA lifer. He was the face of Vince's competition in the 1980s. Given that WWE doesn't always do what's right for business, the fact that they would ensure The American Dream didn't win the title there is well within WWE's character. If they didn't make you a star, you were getting nowhere in WWE. Just ask Steve Borden. They must have paid Sting a lot of money to get him to humiliate himself like that. And then they injure him so he's stupid to wrestle again. There's a reason the last 2 decades of wrestling have been total garbage - nobody wants to put over guys who came from other organizations. And their ability to make new stars themselves is about nil.
What about Tatanka? I can't remember if he ever got the tag team titles. I remember for someone they pushed so hard he ended up with very little to show for it
The fact that Jake Roberts, Jerry Lawler, Dusty Rhodes, Davey Boy Smith, Ron Simmons, Roddy Piper Vader & Curt Hennig never held a major world title is depressing. Ok Jake as much as I wish he had I can understand why... but the others are just mind blowing
Rob Picken The list is superstars who didn't hold ANY title in WWF or WWE not just the WWF or WWE title and Perfect is a two time intercontinental champion . Simmons is two time Tag Team champion . Davey Boy has held the intercontinental title , the Tag Team titles three times , the European title twice and the Hardcore title .Roddy Piper is a former intercontinental and Tag Team champion .
to be fair most of these wrestlers were around during a time when there was only 3 titles to go around. which is why most go in the hall of fame now. but then again didnt marty jannety hold the ic title at one point.
Marty Jannetty held the Intercontinental title after beating Shawn Michaels and held the Tag Team championship with 123 Kid (X Pac) who also held the Tag Team title with Bob "Spark Plug" Holly and with Kane on 2 occasions , the European title 2 times , the Light-Heavyweight title and WWE Cruiser-Weight title .
This list could easily become a series since WWE has been around since 1963 several titles have come and gone and WWE itself has gone through 3 name changes since Vince McMahon Sr and Capitol Wrestling broke away from the NWA in 1963 . Good choice with JYD though have a like .
It's sad that former World champions like Dusty Rhodes, Vader, Jerry Lawler, and Ronnie Garvin were done the way they were by Vince. Then you had guys like Jake Roberts, Paul Orndorff, and Jim Duggan, who had won numerous titles around the southern territories during the early 1980's, get snubbed as well when it came to wearing gold. To me, Dusty Rhodes & Big Van Vader were done the worst out of all the listed pro wrestlers. Dusty Rhodes was one of the most popular pro wrestlers in the world from the mid 1970's up until he went to the WWF. Rhodes, Andre the Giant, the Von Erichs & Hulk Hogan were the most popular pro wrestlers of the the 1980's. And Rhodes was a 3 time World champion. Then there was Big Van Vader, who dominated against top heavyweight performers across 3 continents in the late 1980's in Catch Wrestling Association, New Japan and WCW. He won 3 CWA Heavyweight championships in Germany, 3 IWGP Heavyweight Championships in New Japan, & 3 WCW World Heavyweight Championships in WCW. In 1993 Vader won the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Wrestler of the year, PWI Wrestler of the year, and #2 in the PWI 500. He was thr hottest performer to jump to the WWF in years when he went to the WWF at Royal Rumble 1996. Then....the most dominant big man in pro wrestling since Andre the Giant lost clean to Shawn Michaels in main events constantly in 1996, including one of their biggest shows of the year....Summerslam. And by 1996, to me and many others, Vader was considered a better performer than Michaels. Luckily All Japan brought Vader in and he won the All Japan Triple Crown twice and that helped revitalize his career. But in my opinion, had Michaels not shit on Vader.....Vader would have had a career equal to Michaels. Which to me, Vader is not far under Michaels and i prefer Vader's matches to Shawn Michaels' matches. Sorry....went off on a rant there. Vader was one of my favorite performers, and Michaels bullshit really hurt Vader's career.....plus quite a few others...Chris Candido, Marty Jannetty, Shane Douglas, Bam Bam Bigelow, Carl Oulette amongst others. These were performers that were good to great, who may have had even better careers if not for HBK. But everyone forgives Michaels now.
Know what? There are Wrestler so efficient and good at their job that ..well ... they could only do "the job". Some pass through to become decorated legends, others just become legends without the gold.
True, but I like what Jake said in one interview. "A good title change can be used to build someone, but if you don't need the build....." He also was asked if he regrets never having held the WWF/WWE title and he said that he would have loved the pay day that would have come with it, but his character was over enough that he personally didn't regret never holding it. And for both Jake and Dusty, they were so over that they would never need the title to stay popular.
Ventura , Duggan , Roberts , Rhodes and Vader are on the list and Gorilla Monsoon is not on the list because he held the Tag Team titles with Cowboy Bill Watts and Killer Kowalski .
Well you had 2 in the video Hacksaw and Super Crazy and Hacksaw and Sandman how about Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler , Typhoon and Mabel , Jonathan Coachman and Al Snow or Ric Flair and Roddy Piper who actually beat The Spirit Squad for the World Tag Team title one I also saw Vader and Undertaker .
There are two reasons why all these wrestlers never got a title run. 1) They did not need a belt for the purpose of their character. Or 2) Over the hill and would be stupid to put a title on them.
Vince hardly ever pushed stars made in other federations - Garvin, Windham, Dusty , Dustin Rhodes, Vader etc . They all all found more fame and titles in nwa/ wcw
Ted DiBiase is a former three time Tag Team with IRS as Money Incorporated and Rick Rude held the Intercontinental title beating Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania 5 and held it until Warrior regained it at SummerSlam 1989 . This video is about wrestlers who haven't won any titles in WWF or WWE .
This could easily turn into a series since WWF in one name or another has been going since 1963 superstars have come and gone also titles have come and gone and there are superstars who haven't won any of them . A few big names not on the list Harley Race , Junkyard Dog , Lex Luger and Tatanka .
The fans saved Jake Robert's that time, as those big Hulk Hogan paydays would have gone straight to his head. The nose is a part of the head, isn't it?
WWE champion , Intercontinental 4 times , US title 3 times and several Tag team titles . However this video is about wrestlers who haven't held a title in WWE .
Good choice but remember this list is about superstars who haven't held ANY title in WWE so it could easily become a series since WWE has been around since 1963 several titles have come and gone and WWE itself has gone through 3 name changes since Vince McMahon Sr. and Capitol Wrestling broke away from the NWA in 1963 .
It's one thing to give a heel a title. But Jake Roberts was so damn good at appearing evil that giving him the legitimacy of a title might well have rustled the jimmies of the religious right. And Vince had enough problems at that point as it was.
