10 Wrestlers Who Should Have Been WWE Champion

Over the years we've seen WWE champions who were good and WWE champions who were... not so much... but there's only one - or sometimes two, as is the case right now - WWE world champions at any one time, so the likelihood that every great
wrestler gets the chance to hold the company's biggest belt is small.

Some of it was politics some of it was just Hogan was that over and during that era being that over you had to have the title. Hogan refused to put some guys over in title matches that needed it or would have been best for business at that time.
@jasondiend4248
@jasondiend4248 5 лет назад
That is where story comes in. Hogan can easily lose and you still have him being the top guy. What you do is put a guy like Perfect with the title. Him out wrestle Hogan where Hogan would often out power people. So now Hogan has to get better with his technical wrestling. This make Hogan more well rounded no matter how much Perfect carries the match. It will end with Hogan winning showing that he is just that good. Thus Hogan the super face chasing the title from an arrogant heel. Winner Hogan putting Hogan over. Sometime the best thing for business is taking the title away from the top guy so he can look hungry for the belt and chase said belt. Which in the end would have strengthen Hogan and could have kept him going longer till people were tired of him. Drawing out the reign and putting other guys over at the same time. Also Ted being champion would have been an awesome one too. It comes down to the story and their unwilling to take risks in that era. It is the flip with Cena he wins and loses so often that his title reigns don't matter. Hogan's reigns look strong but could have been stronger losing to guys who were better in a technical sense and make Hogan look even that much better when he wins. I would also say that Hogan can actually wrestle. He isn't the best in the world or anything but Hogan could go. Watch his stuff in Japan even in his later days in the WWF when he went to Japan he would put on great matches. He doesn't get enough credit in that area. He was decent enough to change up his style enough.

Yep. He would have been a WCW champ at some stage but they couldn't put the belt on him for the same reason the WWF couldn't. Terrible shame because he was a great wrestler. Held the US and IC titles though, along with a memorable run as WCW Tag Champ with Nash as The Outsiders.

Mr Perfect won the WWF title from Hogan in 1989 or 90 by the genius hitting Hogan with something allowing Perfect to pin him but then Hogan stated that was a seperate belt, a bit like how there`s two WWE champs now so Perfect`s belt and win meant nothing, Perfect was then shown destroying the belt that he won shortly afterwards.

Personally, I like to count DiBiase's "purchase" of the WWE title as a title reign. As the video said, not only was he certainly worthy of the accolade under the Million Dollar Man character, but the following title reign even began with Savage beating him, which one could quite easily look at as the new champ beating the previous champion.

Excellent list for the most part. I think they could have let Orndorff / Mr. Wonderful have a short run by crowning him champ after their famous cage match with Hogan where BOTH of their feet landed at the same time, but the champ retains in a tie. Have Orndorff win by milliseconds, carry the strap for up to a month (give Hogan a break - like he never sat on that belt) but then use a plot where Bobby Heenan bribed someone in the production truck to alter the footage to have Mr. Wonderful's feet touch first winning the belt. Then, enter Jack Tunney and Hogan gets the strap back without breaking a sweat.

Is interesting how you say some of these guys had everything they needed to become champion. If anything I would say that there is a theme of guys being cut in the mould of a champion but being perhaps just half a step behind a contemporary. Perfect and Owen were just a bit behind Bret and Shawn, Razor was like Diesel but less of a giant, and Orndorff had a body like Hogan but less charisma. Maybe thats why they could never quite step into the limelight?

Actually that's wrong, Owen Hart DID win the WWF title at a house show, they actually had promos of Owen with the WWF title since he beat Bret at the said house show, but they reversed the idea and the belt went back to Bret, so technically, Owen is a former WWF champion.

I can see WCW champion but he only was a tag team wrestler in WWE as part of the brain busters.

This is a pretty interesting topic actually, and while I disagree about Scott Hall I’m going to throw in a couple more to the ones mentioned already: Vader Ron Simmons William Regal DDP (if they’d booked him right in the WWE he would have been excellent) Kerry Von Erich

Ron Simmons and William regal were never main event guys imo but a good pick in Kerry Von Eric I thought he could have been a world champion in WWF/E.

Numetalfan 22 each to their own (I for example never saw Batista as a world champion really, but given his size it was inevitable) Yeah while that family was plagued by tragedy I thought he was going to go places

Matt Hardy should be on this list for obvious reasons. Also, Taka Michinoku (Quoting Mick Foley: "If the WWF was about talent, Taka Michinoku would have been WWF champion").

Truth Be Told: Rick Rude shudda won the WWE Title at Summerslam 1990 and dropped it to Hogan at Wrestlemania 7. But Hogan didn't wanna work with Rude so no wonder Rude left

It is a crime that Rick Rude and Curt Hennig were never WWE World Champions. Rude and Perfect are two of my all-time favorites. Robert’s too.

This list is kind of just a list of the top ten upper mid-carders/ heals of the 80s

Great list - there's so many wrestlers that should've have become champion that this probably could've been a top 20. I would've liked to have seen Chyna on this list though, given that she was the number one contender at one point and was set to become WWF Champion. They changed their minds shortly before the triple threat match because they were worried about the controversy it would cause. Such a pathetic and disappointing decision to go back on that.

There's a bunch of wrestlers from my childhood who I was amazed were never champions, British Bulldog and Piper were two of them. I always saw them as main event champs regardless.

i would love to have seen goldust win the wwe title in his prime during the new generation, imagine the feud he could have with bret hart based on goldusts lust for not just the gold but for bret hart

I can safely say I agree with this list. Maybe not in the same order, but it’s true that these men deserved to be called the WWF/WWE champion at one time or another.

I disagree on Owen. He was a great wrestler, by all accounts a nice guy and was taken from us too soon, but I think his tragic death is why he often pops up in lists like this. He was not a good talker and never really over to the point where he warranted a run with the title.
