Should do a Top 10 RU-vid Rock/Metal Cover Channels, there's the obvious channels like Frog Leap Studios and tensecondsongs but you have to check out Denis Pauna's channel, he does cross-genre mashups like What If ZZ Top Wrote Metallica's Seek & Destroy?, What If The Doors Was Doom Metal? and What If Motorhead Wrote Michael Jackson's Billie Jean? and some of them, well, most of them, sound amazing. (Edit - Denis also plays all the instruments) Raphael Mendes sounds exactly like Bruce Dickenson, every nuance, hits every note and does What If Bruce Dickenson Sang For...Judas Priest/Megadeth/Gun N Roses/etc? types of covers.
Geez MGK really did so much worse than Wes Scantlin, because at least Scantlin's voice was funny bad when he covered "About a Girl" by Nirvana. Something about someone trying and failing spectacularly is way funnier to me than someone not trying at all.
I get what you mean. As bad as POM was, it was definitely entertaining. MGK's cover was bad for different reasons, but mainly lack of trying or caring.

My interpretation of limp bizkit’s cover of faith has always been that they think it’s the cheesiest song imaginable (I’ve heard Fred say this), and they start off singing it in the cheesiest, most exaggerated way possible before just completely fucking destroying it. So for that I think it’s too goofy to hate on
They've said from start that they were making fun of the song. Exactly why Fred sounds the way he does in it. That song still to this day is awesome live.
I feel you, it's fun but not "good" she was very early in her career and was very shy on stage, which is the opposite of Metallica who were very in your face live. It just needed more energy from her, the band was having a riot though
Okay, I can't believe I'm saying this, but ATLEAST PUDDLE OF MUDD was trying and putting in effort. It was still embarrassing, but atleast they tried. MGK didn't give a crap and gave the worst cover in rock history. I can't believe I'm defending puddle of Mudd but with their cover of about a girl, atleast we could laugh and have fun with it. MGKs cover feels like torture. In fact all his music feels like torture
Another MGK one that is gods awful? He, back in like 2011, covered "Swing Life Away" by Rise Against. It's absolute dogshit, turns the beautiful nihilistic track about accepting your place in the world into him just whining about his own life.
The Fuel live cover's a pretty early live show for her, and she's really not really singing in her natural way. It's not always easy to perform to people you look up to. Especially at 18 years old. I'll admit that I like the cover, and the first two Lavigne albums are some of my all time favourite albums. (so I'm a bit biased, but aren't all fans? :D )
No for sure, she kinda would just stand there back then, even in her standard concerts. She was just a goofy teenager, watched a video of her doing Sk8r Boi in 2003? and she literally was like "hi mom hi dad!" after (it was kinda great tbh) So I give her a lot of slack on the not so perfect Fuel, and still find it pretty damn enjoyable
'Fred Durst sounding like a creepy teenager trying to touch a woman for the first time' is the best description i ever heard for roasting this cover, and I've read A LOT bad publications about this cover song.
Worst I've ever seen is Hole coving Pearl Jam's Jermey at a festival. To her credit though Courtney said "wow that sucked, I'm never trying to sing that again" or something to that effect.
The cover of Faith is clearly meant to be a joke, I think it's both terrible and fun simultaneously. However, the other ones aren't even fun, they're just terrible

I think one of the covers I've heard that I was most disappointed in, was Halestorm's cover of "Girl Crush". Girl Crush was HORRIBLY overplayed at the time. Everyone hated it (for one reason or another, but mostly being overplayed). When we still used FM radio at work, people would use our paging system to override the radio and interrupt it on a MASS scale. I stumbled upon the cover by Halestorm, and thought, "oh alright, this could make a difference" at a friendly gathering. Immediate freak out. "WHY ARE WE LISTENING TO GIRL CRUSH?!?!" Calm the fuck down and give it a minute. It's Halestorm. Gave it a minute. Nope. Nope nope. No originality. No addition. No dressing it up. Just Lzzy Hale singing it. I apologized for giving it a chance, and moved on to better heavier things to cleanse our ear holes. By no means "awful" like some of these (MGK, W.. T.. F..!). But, wow. A cash grab if ever I saw one.

I heavily disagree with putting Limp Bizkit's "Faith" on here. I shamelessly prefer it to the original, and I feel like most other people under the age of 60 do as well. I can't even remember the last time I heard the original tbh. If you ever hear it on an IG reel or TikTok, it's gonna be the Limp Bizkit version every single time. I mean, does anyone even listen to George Michaels in 2024?
Lyle Workman and Bon Thiele Jr did an amazing job covering 'Fortunate Son' on the soundtrack of Sons of Anarchy. No vocals, just acoustic guitars, and it works beautifully.
I only know two of these covers so I’ll only comment on them. The Limp Bizkit cover of Faith, I quite liked it when I first heard it although it doesn’t get many plays these days… And Avril Lavigne covering Fuel was ok apart from the start, she doesn’t have the vocal power required for the “Gimme Fuel” opening.

I swear, that awful Bad Wolves cover of Zombie needs to be on one of these videos someday. They took that haunting melody and made it into one of the weakest, limpest excuses of a cover of all time.
Don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I actually really like Limp Bizkit's cover of "Faith" - in fact, I've been getting quite a bit into this band in general lately. They're genuinely talented and a lot of fun. Even Fred Durst isn't all that bad, contrary to what most music nerds seem to agree on. On the opposite end of the spectrun, I never even knew that cover of Green Day's "American Idiot" existed before watching this video, but hearing the singer of 5 Seconds of Summer sing the first line of the song made me cringe and that's when I realized this was going to suck. Can I go back to when I didn't know this cover existed, please? Never heard of nor care about the rest, though, other than ARTV mentioning U2's cover of CCR's "Fortunate Son" in his video about the same topic of bad covers. Considering how great the original song is, I don't think I need to hear the cover to realize that the original is better.

By the way, if you ever feel like doing another "awesome covers" video, the first example that pops to mind is Melvins doing Kiss's "Goin' Blind". Their cover is so great that it made me want to re-explore the entire Melvins discography as a result. Oh, and Weird Al did a far better parody of that Eminem song than any band that tries to cover the original. But Weird Al is the world's greatest human so that shouldn't surprise anyone.
MTV really should have had Pink do the cover of Fuel instead of Avril Lavigne. She is the only female pop star from the era who could have pulled it off without a hitch.
To be fair, Tantric were forced by their label to put a cover on the album. They decided on The Chain since they liked Fleetwood Mac. It's not the worst cover but it certainly was odd.
Honorable mention suggestion: Our Last Night - Surface Pressure It's not enough that Lin Manuel Miranda doesn't have the passion anymore if he's making songs purpose built to be popular on TikTok; we now have what sounds like a trashcore cover band taking advantage of Encanto's obnoxious meme status.
God, Limp Bizkit's Faith cover was so bad, George Michael despised the band afterwards. Also, Avril Lavigne stays in my heart for impacting the punk/goth/emo underground positively, but the sad thing is, she wouldn't be able to top the original energy of Metallica.
As much as I love Rob Zombie, his cover of Black Sabbath's Children of the Grave just completely misses the mark. The original was a rallying cry for the younger generation to push back against cold war politics before it got everyone killed. The cover kept the original lyrics but tried to make it into a B horror movie by adding newsreel audio about cannibalism and the dead rising. The instrumentation sounded good but... God damn.
