He kept insisting that you would only do that in rare cases where there was a birth defect or serious medical something requiring it. If it's not a thing that is done over there, I guess they wouldn't have a catchy katakana word for it.

"golden hour" is actually used in english in photography and videomaking referring to the time of the day when the sun is low creating lots of shadows and giving ambience and depth to the shot compared to hours in which the sun is high up, potencially creating a flat, boring image. According to some sources I could find, and I quote: " The Japanese name konsento (コンセント) for electric sockets is said to originate from the English "concentric plug" in the form konsentorikku puragu (コンセントリックプラグ).[1] Some British sockets from around 1900 consisted of concentric (co-axial) contacts, unlike the pinned ones in use today. These were in use in Meiji period (1868-1912) Japan, and the abbreviated form konsento became the accepted way to describe any kind of electrical outlet. This may have been from a split of konsento puragu into konsento to describe the outlet and puragu to describe the plug." Which is neat!

Yeah that's the funny bit of it.. there is actual reason to the madness but you wouldn't get it unless you understand where it comes from. There's examples of that in most languages I believe with native words but also with loan words being bastardized as with this one in Japanese... I can't think of one from the top of my head though lol.
@magnagazoo4863
@magnagazoo4863 3 года назад
You would though think it would be from English. Since after WW2 the US Military engineering started electrifying Japan to US standard. That is why they use the split 240VAC distribution and 120V US pattern sockets. (for the most part)

SupremeDeity Duolingo and other apps are actually a great way to start, along with RU-vid videos for the rules that apps don’t explain. And anime does help if you aren’t used to the pronunciation, and could be useful to check your hearing skills and progress. However, it would probably be better to also watch something like non-animated Japanese shows because I’ve heard that anime uses a less common way of speaking.

I actually knew some of these but that's cause I've read up on the subject. Some wasei eigo are really odd though. Like how they randomly add "up" to things. Or words such as "mystery circle" for crop circles (although I suppose alien landing sites *would* be mysterious). Loanwords from non-English languages are weird too. Like "koohi," which is surprisingly not from English but from Dutch. Also "baito" (part-time job) is from German (from arbeit). They also used to use the French "vacances" for vacation (bakansu) but the English word (bekeishon) seems more popular now.

Salaryman is a funny one because it's been reverse-loaned BACK to English via cyberpunk literature, to have a very specific connotation of an overworked, highly-devoted to the point of fanaticism, low-to-mid level worker in a giant corporation (often a zaibatsu or a western company that is functionally like a zaibatsu) - sort of the stereotypical Japanese salaryman but in a culture where that level of dedication to the corporation and overwork aren't normal. Similarly in the US we have re-loaned "Soapland" as a soft-prostitution establishment that doesn't engage in sex but does have sexual conduct, but it's almost always used in context of Japanese establishments, because they're not really a thing in most English-speaking countries.
