I'm 57, and told I need a knee replacement because I am bone on bone, but I can't have one. I weigh too much, so I am high risk for the surgery. I have been following some of your videos and they give me hope that I can help my pain and not have the surgery. Ps. I have lost 25 lbs, and will keep on trying. Thanks for your words of encouragement.😊
Same here in South Africa, loosing weight 27kg and some exercise and I was ok, no pain and limp. Comes pandemic, I pick up 12kg, fell backwards on my bum and now I battle with knee lock, pain and limp. Must start my keto diet again.
I had surgery but my range of motion didn't improved and he said can do anything the rest of your life you will be like this . But I really don't care what docote said I am doing workout and she is very good I can go physio as don't have insurance 😢but Alyssa videos are much better then physio , as she's is a doctor
I am a 62 year old woman recently diagnosed with “severe” osteoarthritis in my left knee. Probably a lesser condition in my right knee. I was told 8 out of 10 in your list by a specialist. I am so, so very thankful to have found you and hear such hope about my physical future. I want to forward this to the physician I saw to help educate that office about their own field of medicine. I asked a lot of questions, none were answered effectively, and the diagnosis was, “nothing can be done and you will be looking at knee replacement”. She suggested I simply call back when the pain got worse and I was looking for a medical solution. You just freed me from all of my fear. Looking forward to engaging in your program.
If you don't mind sharing, how well have you improved the knee pain since posting this 5 months ago? Not dealing with knee pain my self (hip pain in my case), but just wondering if you were able to get relieve without resorting to surgery.
@@hikgerguy1234 I have been working on my inner thigh muscles, massage and strengthening, for just a few weeks now and have much improvement. I love this channel, but you might want to check out Conor Harris' channel as well. He really explains movement etc and give great, different mobility things to do. Hope you're doing better. I worked in the yard yesterday for 3 hours and although my whole body is achy my hip is no worse.
@@kathrynvessey4659 Do they really care that much or is it💰💰💰💰I am serious‼️ … if this PT can help people without surgery… other Drs PT’S etc can too…hang in there… I also abhor being put under fear…..👍🏻😁
Years ago, I was told I have osteopenia, and a doctor told me to take his drugs, but I refused, he was angry and said I will regret it and my bones will disengage. Well, now I am 75 years old and my bones are fine, I did do many things to increase the health of my bones.
I am 64 and had my share of physical challenges and battles with the medical profession. Alyssa Kuhn, you are the best I've come across on the web and your #10 point made me a subscriber. I was 30 when my doctor told me I had a spine like a 90 year old. Well, I've never had surgery to correct my "bone" problem, it just took a lot of muscle strengthening / stretching / perseverance and good old determination. God bless you for the work and advice you give.
I got so depressed when l was told my hip joint was done and Was bone on bone the only way to be helped was to go for hip replacement. And the price was too high to afford. From that day l remember is when l started limping thinking l had no cartilage but only bones which were causing pain. But to my surprise after observing some remedies to reduce inflammation pain shifted to the other side, since l mostly lean on it. So your assurance as medical personnel is very vital. The other MO just looking at my age of 55 just said this is due to age SO I will give you little help apart from pain killers and maybe a walking stick would help. 😢😢 I felt so old and l just stopped taking care of myself l started seeing the old woman in me. Your videos have BROUGHT BACK life in me. I appreciate.
Great information Dr. Alyssa!!! It's crazy how many doctor still give people outdated information that leaves them the same or worse in their arthritis. Thanks for putting this list together!
I was in my 50’s, really fit and flexible and was told (only by X-ray and not even examined) that I needed my hip replaced. AND it could be done on an outpatient basis. I’m turning 60 next month - no surgery 😊
I am 49 and due to health issues, have very bad arthritis - who knew... it took a few years to figure out the issue. When I got checked by the specialist his first words were "wow, this is the worst case I have seen:. It did make me feel helpless, I am so very thankful I found your channel a few months ago. I am changing how I eat and how I move and it is has gotten me off of a walker and I can get myself out of a chair now too. Thank you so much!
Fantastic!! i am in the process of going from a walker to a cane.. my hardest parts are a bad knee on the same side as my 2nd hip replacement 4 months ago. .. how do you get past the head fear of walking unaided again?
Hi! I truly appreciate seeing someone who CARES about those of us suffering from arthritis pain. I am 56 years old. I've played sports my whole life until joint pain made it impossible. I had to quit playing softball at 49 and volleyball at 53. I have osteoarthritis in my big toe joints, and my toes can no longer flex AT ALL! I went to an Orthopedic surgeon around 46 or so who only wanted to operate. Fuse my big toe joints so they CAN'T move. BAM my pain should dissappear. No thanks! My knees are now bone on bone. Now that I'm in Menapause, the pain is now in my hands. Especially my thumbs. I am a hair stylist so that is NOT GOOD😢 I have recently discovered that some of my "healthy meals" cause inflammation. I will be watching more of your videos my friend!

Loing weight, especially when you're older,is more complex than just reducing calories or lowering your carbs. There are things like Don't eat after the sun goes down & going to bed early, intermittent fasting, not eating inflammatory and processed foods, etc. But, let me tell you from experience, that it is SO hard to break old habits.
I’m so glad I found your channel! I am just waiting to hear back from the orthopedic surgeon on my MRI. I have been told several different things from Drs and PT. Initially my go thought it was my IT band, got an X-ray an in the drs office and according to the radiologist was mild on, sent to PT who gave me some simple exercises and told me I had bursitis. I still had bad pain when walking and ended up limping the pain was so bad. Surgeon 1 one X-rays again standing up, diagnosed severe arthritis and said surgery was the only option. Went to reputable surgeon #2, who discussed getting cortisone injections to see if/ how that would help but wanted to see my MRrI results 1st. In the mean time found your videos and started some mild exercises and I already feel better, I’m even rethinking getting the injection.
Thank you so much for your videos on arteritis,I have avoided surgery due to your information and advice,my hip arthritis is much 26:13 better and no pain just maybe a twinge, l will continue watching your videos and exercising ,I feel very positive and confident, I am 83 year old female , thank you again x
I’m 50. 7 years ago dr told me by looking my knee X-ray- right knee 100% worn out and left knee is beginning about 40% worn out. Time to do TKR on right is when your husband brings you here (anytime your pain is not tolerable !) 2023 as of now my joints are healthy. No surgery needed. Just watch my diet, weight, improving and adding more exercise to my routine, watch out for flare in knee pain. Little secret to add on is consistency and stay happy by myself!
Please share the excercises that you added to your routine. Any video links you followed would be of great help! My father is diagnosed with this and is being told similar things and I would love to be able to help him feel like himself again!

This is the best video I have seen all year. I was told by my orthopedic surgeon that "running for fitness would be a stupid idea." Up until then I had really enjoyed running and wanted to get back into it. I had done a couple of 10-mile races etc. After he told me that I thought I will never run again. I went through a grieving process. It was a big adjustment. Maybe I won't do a 10-mile race anymore, but this gives me confidence to find someone to help me prepare for running and see where I can get to. Maybe a 5 k or something.
10 years ago I was told I needed a “new” knee. I worked with a PT who was amazing. She mentioned PRP - I had to travel to get it in my knee but it really helped. Still no knee surgery!Still having a good, active life thanks to her. ❤❤❤to the PTs out there helping us get on with our lives. 🙏
I injured my hip from a fall at work, landed on my right SI joint. I had complete freedom of movement and worked a physically demanding job before this, hiked 5 miles and ballroom danced with no issues.. It is scary the WRONG information out there, I am 62 so I feel automatically they label me with osteoarthritis.. It made me depressed and hopeless. I have searched for alternative view points and along with a couple other sites, yours is incredible helpful. I especially think the mind aspect you offer. You are making a difference in others life, Thank you!
When I asked an orthopaedic surgeon why I had frozen shoulder, he told me that is something that women my age get it, it was normal. I was so disappointed, given no reason and felt like I just had to accept it. So I started going to the sauna and spa and using the jets to release the tightness around the back of my arms and shoulders. Within 3 months I was able to lift my arm again. It’s very disappointing that you go for advice to a specialist and get no answers or help. Thank you, I relate to everything you’re saying.
Check out orthopedic surgeon Dr Vonda Wright. She talks a lot about frozen shoulder and how it's caused by inflammation, which can be from a reduction in estrogen.
I have been told by 3-4 surgeons that both knees are bone on bone "worst I've ever seen for someone your age" "We can't do knee replacement until you lose 100lbs" . This has all been 10yrs ago. I was in the middle of remodeling a house doing a lot of the work myself. I was also dealing with calcifications along my achilles tendon that the pain had gotten more than I could tolerate. The surgery for the achilles could not be done without at least a scope of the right knee (that also had a meniscus tear. The meniscus tear pain is what originally sent me to seek care). After the scope of the right knee along with debridment of the achilles tendon, 10 yrs later I feel pretty amazing. 3 yrs ago, after having tingling in my hands for 15yrs, and being told it was carpal tunnel but not treatment for CT even touched the tingling. I was told I had 3 herniated discs that a whiplash or fall could paralyze me fromnthe neck down sent me for a 3 level spinal fusion. There was never any question as to what caused the herniated discs except deginerative disc disease....same as what caused the knees to be bone on bone. I adopted a "Mediterranean lifestyle diet" and saw a dramatic improvement in all my aches and pains. So, I am convinced that adding the right exercises along with a healthy joint friendly diet is the key to feeling so much better.
I’ve decided against surgery, due to you videos which I ha ve followed each day my arthritis is so much better and no pain or just little twinges, thank you so much for explaining everything about arthritis and giving confidence, which I have plenty now ,I will continue with you instructions , thank yo again x
Brilliant. Im nearly 80 but can still ballroom dance at a high level. My left knee has serious degradation, but it doesnt stop me. Good veggie diet with lots of fruit and brightly coloured vegetables. Keep muscles strong with sensible exercises. Keep active. As the video says, rest is your enemy unless you cant move normally without serious pain. What i hate from doctors is the phrase "at your age". Best response is " at my age, do i still have to pay"?
I am 29 years old and recently got diaganosed with OA , it feels terrible to see people of your age walking with such a ease...fighting with this everyday with a hope to get back to my normal life soon.
I turned 30 this year and I have osteoarthritis too. There should be a support group for young people with this condition! I think that young people like us rarely get attention because we are overshadowed by the notion that it's an 'old people condition". I think it can be even more challenging to face OA at a younger age than it might be to deal with it in your 70s. I'm not exaggerating when I say I’m constantly checking for updates on drug development-it's almost an obsession for me. That said, one positive aspect is that we are in a better position to build muscle around the affected joint. However, I believe the lack of approved OA drugs is partly because it's labeled as an 'old people’s condition.' It’s like, 'just make the grandma pay for PRP injections and joint replacements-why approve (or research) drugs that aren’t painkillers, she's old anyway.'" Nowadays, it seems easier to get cured of cancer than to find relief from OA pain. My conspiracy theory is that this is partly because of what I mentioned earlier. If more younger people spoke up about it, I think the situation might be different.
I’m 69 and had an injury in my right knee 2 years back and though I could bend my knee I couldn’t straighten it fully. But a tripping caused a twist and inflammation and pain of the same knee and difficulty in bending it.. I was advised arthroscopic surgery, but since I was to travel I put it off.. Another doc whom I consulted later on return said nothing would help, that I should do as much as I could….that I wasn’t a candidate for knee replacement yet. I started walking which I could do…so walked daily for 50min @ 4-4.8 km/ hour. But my ROM of my knee was not much (maybe 100-120 degree) How can I improve that ? I’ve started watching your RU-vid videos recently…and feel you’ll be able to help me improve my state. Thanks so much
I was pretty much told that my only option for my left knee was 'knee replacement'. I told the doctor - Oh - Did you find cancer in my knee cap? He was like 'No. But you have severe arthritis in the knee'. I informed him that until they find cancer in my knee cap, I'm not getting a piece of metal and plastic implanted in my left leg. Period.
Can You Explain What is that Coolit Thing!!!! I Don't Know How To Spell It... Does It Work?????? What Exactly Is It????????? Please Explain This..... Also About Those Gel Shots????????? THANK YOU........... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I could not maintain my activity level as OA began in my knees and hip. And my risk and incidents of knee injury increased (torn meniscus). It's impossible not to gain weight slowly over time. I am 65. I was once a very physically active person. As the OA slowed down my hiking, jogging, horseback riding, I had to stop, and do walking. But only recently after studying nutrition for almost 2 years, I am slightly decreasing my pain through managing inflammation. Added sugars in my diet seem to be the biggest contributing factor in my joint pain and inflammation. Its true, Too much rest or complete bed rest is not helpful. Slow gentle joint mobilization is good. Thank u 4 your videos that reinforce what ways I'm finding for turning this back around slowly and adding new things to help manage this.❤
I’m 67 and have cmc arthritis. I went to a hand specialist to see what my options were other than surgery. I told the doctor I wanted to try steroid shots for the pain and inflammation. She told me “you know you are probably just pissing in the wind”. I don’t want surgery. I appreciate what you are saying. No one will advocate for ourselves than ourselves.
I’m 73 and have CMC joint degeneration in both hands. The hand specialist I see went over all the treatment options with me and then left the choice up to me. That is the way it should be. The decision rests with the patient, not the doctor. Best of luck on getting the treatment you want to try.
This spring at the age of 47, my doc sent me to an orthopedic surgeon because of my ankle arthritis. I had to tell him 3 times that I just wanted physical therapy. He was trying to push a full ankle replacement on me! Luckily I got him to agree to PT and within a month I had no more pain and was able to walk so much better. I have also been working on balance and strength through yoga, which has been helping greatly with body stiffness and lower back arthritis also. Great video to help shed light on the incorrect information out there.
I was told, when I was diagnosed with knee arthritis, "oh, well, this is just part of getting old", shrug ho-hum. No treatment, no advice. It was brushed off for 15 years. And yes, I was also told, don't run and don't jump. It got to the point where I could walk for maybe a block, before I was howling in agony. I finally said, please let me see someone in sports medicine. Aaaaand, the sports med doc, after assigning me to physical therapy, advising different shoes, etc., said, "oh, by the way, you should be using this, here, I'll write you a prescription". It was for topical diclofenac. I was skeptical..."that's 'joint cream'", I said to myself, "how can enough of the medication get into the joint?" But I tried it. Two weeks later, I was walking with considerably less pain. Two. Weeks. And I had been allowed to go for 15 years without a simple treatment, that is apparently common in other countries. Now, topical diclofenac is over-the-counter in the US. About being told to not run or jump... A little over a year ago, I discovered, to my horror, that I could no longer run nor jump. I had "forgotten" how -- when I tried to run, the "run" pattern no longer worked properly. And, it was clear that I now had a mental block against jumping. What I can say to that advice is...use it or lose it. Keep moving. Don't allow to languish that thing you want to keep being able to do. The ability to run and jump is not just some "for fun", "sports" thing -- these are critical skills for safety. For instance, where I live, drivers are notoriously bad, and there are lots of pedestrian accidents. I need to be able to run / leap out of the way, if some incompetent driver heads straight for me. And what if someone attacks me? Am I just supposed to stand there? If some doctor says, just don't run or jump, explain that these are necessary for safety. In my case, it was clear that there was more than just "forgetting how" going on -- this was during the pandemic, when gyms were closed. I had been not going to the gym for about three years at that point, so I had lost considerable strength. Now I'm attempting to climb back out of the sarcopenia pit, mainly with resistance training, physical therapy, getting enough protein.
I'm glad they are told to lose weight and exercise also. I know people who don't exercise and they need to lose weight. A lot of people don't want to hear a doctor tell them to lose weight. When you talk about weight loss, people feel its Fat Shaming NO!! It's about your health cancer, heart disease, and diabetes also. Yes! They need to lose weight also!! As Americans, we eat to damn much, so they need to both change their eating habits and exercise, or they will never take it seriously.
Problem is they tell you this without compassion and without a doable plan to lose weight and exercise...I am s personal trainer and talk with many who have tried and struggled to pointvof defeat...I have been able to help them but was very hard to break through the defeat. The plan needs to be broken down in steps with consistency and realistic goals so that they begin to feel successful. So if the dr says this they absolutely need to direct them to a simple plan to help them get started and not overwhelmed.
I was told surgery was my only option. I did do the surgery but I now believe it was not my only option . And I wish I would have tried some other things like your exercises first.& other possibilities . I have good range of motion but it hurts all the time and swells all the time like before my surgery-a full knee replacement. It is difficult to kneel on it. And it doesn’t feel normal around that knee.
Ty for being a strong advocate for us arthritis-niks. Your description of the “lost” feeling, and the consequent vulnerability to rely on medical answers not necessarily suitable for ourselves, reflects my circumstance of initial diagnosis. This video is a v encouraging reminder for us to know there are multiple answers, not just the medical community’s “one size fits all”.
Doctors get pretty irresponsible, throwing around phrases like 'worst I've ever seen' or '___ more time to live' or 'just aging'. With minimal oversight, it's too easy to get lazy, with diagnostics, treatment ideas and followup. Main thing to keep in mind going in is: It's a for-profit industry
I was told by my Dr. that if there was a book for the worst hips from arthritis my hips would be at the top. Then he proceeded to tell me that my hips and back were atrocious while he was laughing. He continued for the rest of the appointment laughing, smiling and telling me what bad shape I was in. When I went in for surgery the nurse who prepped me said she watched me when I walked in and I barely had a limp. Now after almost 4 months I still have a noticeable limp and much more pain every day.
Thank you so much for your tips. It's so validating to hear you say it's not "just" arthritis. I've gone to the doctor in excruciating knee pain only to be told that the xray looks fine with some mild osteoarthritis. The pain never seems to match what other people see. My hands are already deformed from osteoarthritis (I'm only 55) and they hurt constantly. It's exhausting!
Haven't heard any of this yet, was dxed at an Urgent Care via x-ray. But happy to hear from you. I am 75 and an avid hiker. I want to keep hiking. I can't do hikes like I used to (I also have balance problems, so some kind of hikes are scary). I also love traveling--road trips and so on. Right now I am experiencing severe pain but hope to get over that so I can go back to what I love.
Barbara ONeill a highly knowledgeable naturalist says jumping helps bring blood to the bones for healing...i tried jumping with my severe arthritis in my hip..no pain..i found that odd..since the Dr. Said im bone on bone...im continueing jumping. Because it helps me..
I‘m 64 years old and have struggled several diagnosis, including arthritis, with my legs, feet and consequently my weight for the last 30 years. I have be told ALL of those 10 points, but never been given the kind of help I‘m hearing from you!! I had actually given up, disappointed with Doctors and physiotherapists who seem to only want to make money, but don‘t really help the patient!! I have subscribed and will follow you. Your exercises for arthritic knees are wonderful! Finally something I can DO and stick at because I‘m not making the pain worse!! THANK YOU!!!
Hi I have ostio arthritis left knee, waiste down, and feet. Saw physio who advised you have inflammation, no advice to help. Wish I saw your video before. Thank you everything you say makes sense. I am going to investigate reducing inflammation through eating. I do pilates and barr ballet work. I am 67. Due to see surgeon mid November. I am from the uk. Your videos are inspiring thank you. X
Over 20 years looking for help. The pain is psychological, pelvis is rotated causing pain and it is as good as it is going to get. Finely after x-rays and MRI = volumes of spine problems, bone on bone left hip with osteoarthritis right hip going bad and 3 options: live with it, take drugs or shots, get hip replacement and referrals for, good intentions, PT causing debilitating pain and on several occasions could barely walk and had to crawl to the bathroom. My drugs of choice were soaking in hot water, swimming, walking stairs and riding my bike; I was told to stop it all and I did...got worse. By accident found a PT offering helpful exercises, basic baby step exercises. Insurance ran out last year and this is how I found Alyssa! Thank God! The nutrition tips have pulled me out a scary dark place. Her baby step exercises are also working wonders❣ I went to 4 surgeons and did not feel right about what they were telling me. Also, once I got their clinic notes from the consultation they wrote things that we did not discuss. They wrote that they told me this or that and they did no such thing. Moving on and forward. I am now eating the same breakfast as Alyssa and researching better nutrition choices based on her basic and simple food list suggestions. I am slowly ditching the pasta, bread and bad chocolate binges during high levels of pain.
Wow. Amazing. I have hip pain. 51. So happy this video came into my RU-vid feed....I suspect sitting too much and being afraid to move and make things worse and also inflammation. Can't wait to keep watching Alyssa to fix it!!! I've been fit and active my whole life but never been stiff like this when I get up from sitting until the past year or so. Thanks for sharing your story. All the comments here are so encouraging. 😊
Wow.... 8 have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis stage 3.... they said no stairs, no squad I'm a teacher going up stairs .. and going to classes. I try to eat anti inflammatory foods... and put cream on. Thank you for your help and time here ❤❤
I find your utube guides give me some hope..I’m in uk and there is little to know support from nhs re osteoarthritis I’ve even been told ‘I’ve no rehab potential’ I’ve been bounced from Rheumatology to Neurological. Here if they label folk such as me with Fybromyalgia..yet clearly X Rays show different..I swim daily, however, out of water I’ve now deteriorated to no balance..walk very short distances..At 67 my whole life has been turned around, forced to retire at 66..used to walking miles daily..lots weight loss etc..thanks for inspiring videos which offer some glimmer of light at the end of a very dark tunnel sometimes
I have been told by a doctor last Sunday I don’t even know how you’re walking! You need knee replacement! I’m with you I want to be stronger no surgery. Thanks with all my self letting me know that I can get better, with your help and my willingness!n.
My Dr did the same. She told me I had extensive arthritis. I asked if there was anything I could do, exercises, diet etc and she said, if I didn’t want pain killers there was nothing she could do to help. 😖
Thank you so much for giving us hope!!! I am 43, recently diagnosed with labral tear,FAI and mild arthritis in my left hip. I'm doing pilates and swimming 4-5 times a week and I have seen major help with my pain and mobility. BUT the orthopedic surgeon that I visited told me "for sure you are going to need a hip replacement in the future!" I believe that it's absolutely wrong to say such words to young people... I was completely frustrated and cried all day for a few days until I managed to control myself again after surgeon's prognosis!!
Thank you so much for the information. I am sooo glad I came across your channel. I am in soo much pain, I can barely walk. I hope to see an orthopedic specialist soon, but until then I am taking advantage of all the information you have to offer and especially the exercises. Wish me luck
@@arthritisadventure I have. I found you♥️. I did not realize that just stepping up and back used so many muscles, I just started today, and can not wait until tomorrow to try one of the other ones.
Hi Alyssa need advice Have a bruised inflamed tendon and had excruciating pain go for physio which has made a great improvement with exercises still limping still have some pain … not overweight actually thin Need some advice Not giving surgery a thought… I walk up and down stairs and walk till my leg gets sore Many tell me to rest but as you say must keep active Thank you very much for all your info
What an inspiring video! I am 72 and have hip arthritis, and have been told all the things you mentioned! I'll check out all your videos and resources. Thank you very much!

Can it be possible that the pain comes from muscle...since muscle moves bones...when i jump i dont feel pain in my hip..i would think if it were bone that jumping would hurt
Very inspiring and thanks but I have endured this extreme pain for 2 years and I honestly did a disservice to my person. I haven't been in the gym for 2years after doing 40 yrs in the gym. I am having surgery asap after trying everything even & including pre habilitation. No more snake oil fixes for me, I will not be debilitated any further. Honestly unless you're extremely wealthy you must participate in life to live.
Diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right knee - I just turned 60. Found your channel yesterday and did one of your workouts and the muscles in my keg felt good. Just watched your video about 10 things people are told about arthritis..... All of it is true! I left the ortho dr. In shock because all they want to do is give you shots and tell you it won't get better. I love how you present your information - thank you for giving me hope.
I just saw an orthopedic doc for hip pain (only when swinging my leg into my car and putting on my pants). He told me I had secondary OA (osteoarthritis) and hip dysplasia. Prescribed my an NSAID which I chose not to take after reading the side effects. Told me if it got worse I could get a shot, then it if progressed from there possible PAO (periacetabular osteotomy), which is MAJOR surgery. I'm going back to PT (with someone who is Board Certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and has a BS in kinesiology and is FAAOMPT certified). I'm looking to avoid surgery and make my hip stable again. I'm only in my early 60s and have no intention on just giving up. I want to remain active and keep hiking.
I have week ankles too with planters fasheitus along with arthritic knees. When I do knee strengthening my ankles get sore and there for my feet get sore like ankle and foot shints
What about walking around the house with ankle weights on? I have had 6 fractures over the years. I exercise daily ( cross trainer and some yoga positions) and am not overweight, but I am still on a crutch after 3 fractures sustained in one day 2 years ago. One surgeon told me I needed another hip replacement and another said I didn't. I know the one I want to believe, but my body tells me I should probably accept the one who thinks I need the replacement hip as I live with pain.
Hello, I’m 72 with arthritis in my left knee actually both knees but the right knee which has more arthritis in it doesn’t hurt. That’s just crazy to me. I have been following you for several months and have been doing the exercises My knee has improved quite a bit but I seem to be at a holding point I guess I don’t have my muscles as strong as they need to be yet but I keep working on them. My goal is to walk on the beach with my kids and grandkids the end of this month for our yearly family trip. I will download the 5 tips and see if I’m missing something important Thank you for your videos they are very informative Alice
I haven't actually been diagnosed with any form of arthritis, but I suspect that I may have it. The things you are saying in this video are EMPOWERING. You're helping people to realize that they have the ability and opportunity to help themselves, and that is so important. Thank you for sharing this information.
I just want to walk, without the cane preferably. I am 54. I have lymphedema and osteoarthritis. I have seen 3 different surgeons and only 1 that has considered surgery(maybe, he was just saying that) not thinking I would ever lose the weight. :/ I have been told "this is the worst I have ever seen". I have been on excruciating pain and worry about pain relievers because of side effects. After my first video with you 😊I found hope! I was losing it. Thank you so much. So so much.
My physical therapist says not to run. Truly if I walk super slowly for an hour I am in a debilitating flare up following day. I have disc degeneration. Injury. And possible pcos as well…I don’t want their surgeries. They are nasty to us when we go under (I recorded my colonoscopy procedure the other day-disturbing the cruelty and lack of professionalism).
I'm shocked by all the stories in the comments. Are the surgeons encouraging surgery because they'll personally benefit financially? I'm in the UK so I don't pay for any medical treatments including surgery (if that ever became an issue) so I feel that my treatment is based on need and not stuffing surgeons wallets.
Awesome information I’ve visited 3 orthopedics and they all say there’s nothing to do they’re only trying to get me to 40 for a knee replacement but i feel good I have good days and bad days at one point i was squatting 450 lbs with no pain at all! The honest truth is I’m so lost at what I should do, the doctors only say things that make me feel like I’m doomed.
There definitely is hope. I would recommend starting with the 4 day challenge as strength and balance can be two of the best things to start with. www.arthritisadventure.com/challenge
I have osteoarthritis of my sacroiliac joints( so painful) along either side bilateral hip bursitis, hamstring tendinopathy , glute tears, and osteoporosis 😢 what do I do?!!!
I’m 76 with a torn Meniscus. I love to hike but this has put a pause on it. The tear was caused by using the Leg Extension machine at the gym. I was told because the X-Ray showed Osteoarthritis, I wouldn’t be a candidate for Arthroscopic surgery because of my age and the Arthritis. I was told to do Physical Therapy, which I have done for a year the tear has gotten worse and it is too painful to hike now. Is my only option left to have a Replacement. I hope not as I’ve seen the results on several people including my husband. It isn’t pretty! So what now…how do I avoid surgery and still be able to hike.
Same here: I have 3 slipped discs and arthritis in my right hip. The ortho surgeon said, "The body is getting old....this is what happens". He pretty much said 'deal with it'. Did not offer me any solutions, transferred me to a hip specialist..sure, get a hip replacement...not happening. I did Google research. I am taking collagen and other supplements. Right hip is almost back to normal. I am doing exercises from You Tube and walking my dog. I am going to see a spine specialist that is the other Dr's boss...one of the Dept Heads of the Ortho Dept. Thank you for your videos. I cancelled my PT appts. You gave some of the same exercises plus more!
I have been told the ball of my hip joint has several cracks. So not to walk around shopping Ctre. I am waiting for appt. with Orthopaedics at hospital. What should I do? I fear cracks may be made worse by e exercises.
I have moderate osteoarthritis in my knees, hips (with limited mobility) and lower back. I was told not to run or jump anymore. I do lift weights and do stationary bike and stretch. I would love to get more mobility back, is that even possible? I don't necessarily have pain unless I move my legs to far in a certain way. It seems like the arthritis has gotten worse in the last couple of years. I've been through PT, they say I'm strong, but recently tore my meniscus doing a stretch they suggested, the meniscus tear bothers me more than the arthritis.
My dad had RA, back in the '60s, but it never slowed him down. He was, although, always on the hunt for pain relief ie dipping his hands in melted paraffin wax.
I just found Alyssa on RU-vid which is my blessing. I’ve started her Knee Arthritis exercises and I’m finding strength and less pain when walking and sleeping. I now have hope for my future. TY!
I went to the orthopedist for a very painful, swollen knee after stepping off a curb (knee popped loudly, but I did not fall). PT has helped a lot, but I learned just today that my actual diagnosis is early onset osteoarthritis. Up to now, I had understood it was a slightly torn meniscus. I’m looking for every way to reverse any effect/symptom so that I can have an active farming life - chickens only, but a lot of walking on uneven ground and toting bulky things like buckets and fencing. Thanks for your advice and the link to the extra video!
I've been told, and believed most of them. I am old, but getting better all the time. Your exercises have been helping, and lifestyle, such as diet and weight loss have helped. I get a lot of help eating whole food, plant based, no oil, avoiding salt, and sugar. Thank you for your support.
9:28 I’m so encouraged that I watched you video. I have osteoarthritis in the hip and according the the surgeon I have no cartilage in my hip and like others he wanted to do surgery. I would love information on exercises and diet. I’m 65 and overweight.
Hi! This would be a good video to watch next: 3 TIPS to regain an active life with arthritis from a physical therapist ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-enhBZ0VM1tM.html
Love your channel. I just got osteoporosis numbers back, not good. I moved from osteopinia to osteoporosis. In my spine. Do you have exercises to increase bone density?
I have bursitis of the right hand side hip and OA of hip Inflammation commonly of my groun and thighs told to rest and take cortisone injection bothe legs do not exercise or u will agravate the areas and cause more inflammations i am 56 yrs old and told its due to ware and tare and getting old i felt so sad use to run go on long walks 10 to 11.000 steps daily reduced to 2 to 3 000 steps daily 😢 i am told constantly to rest i asked to see a pysio therapist which ive booked in for
Call almost every single one of those things. Except for lose weight instead when I went into the doctors office, he said, oh you’re not overweight as though he expected me to be. It’s very hard to accept my auto immune/arthritis diagnosis when I’ve eaten most of my life, the way they tell people to eat like your videos I like your voice, your cadence, and your optimism.
Thanks for your honest statements about doctors and dealing with pain. I just saw an orthopedic doc because PT wasn't helping me with pain in my left hip (when swinging my leg into the car or putting on my pants). I did PT for 5 months total (three with a PT and two months on my own) and couldn't resolve the pain. After taking xrays, I was told I had secondary OA (osteoarthritis) and hip dysplasia. I was prescribed an NSAID (which I declined because of the VERY long list of side effects). He said if it gets worse I could get a shot and if it gets worse after the shot, then surgery would be needed. At my age (early 60s), I have no desire to have surgery. I can do 99% of the things I want/need to do but want to get back to hiking and maintain an active life. I think with your help I will definitely get there. You're giving us all the push we need to resolve our own issues and question medical advice that we're given. Thanks for putting all your videos together and making them available for free!
Hello hikerguy, I am 64 and just discovered this channel. I had broken by elbow about 30 years ago. I was told I had to have surgery. I was told off by the surgeon for not wearing a sling. I told him, this is a joint and must continue to move otherwise it will seize in this position. He got angry with me and said He is the Professional HE knows best and I must have surgery and after surgery I will have a disability of 15 - 25% instead of 50% I went to see a physiotherapist. He had trouble maneuvering my arm. He then placed a heat bag on my arm, waited until the muscle warmed up and relaxed and proceeded to maneuver my arm. At no point did the physiotherapist (to which I was seeing once a week) advice me on anything. Breaking an elbow generally leaves you with a bent arm. I spent the next 11 months working on my elbow everyday for a minimum of two hours at a time. Starting of with a heat bag and then all the massaging, stretching and strength exercises. This was extremely painful but I persevered until that one morning I woke up and my arm was straight. I had met someone who also broke their elbow (which was bent), he was the only person who teared up when I explained what I had to do, to straighten my arm. I not only had to "fight" with medical professionals but also with family and friends. I was considered a "know it all." All this to say Alyssa's advice is as far as I'm concerned, the best I've heard.
@@sugarspice4051 Thanks for that story. When it comes to doctors of any type, I believe in the saying "trust but verify". I don't just take a doctor at their word. I do my own research (as I think everyone should do). Doctors don't know everything.
I’m so thankful I found your channel. I’m 47 and was told, the only thing to help my arthritis is to lose weight. I also was told no more, high intensity workouts, no squats, no walking. However we will allow you to bike ride or swim. My “wind was taken out of my sail” I asked for additional help and resources, the Dr said figure out how to lose weight and gave me a cortisone shot that lasted 3 months . I’m open for any suggestions
So sorry to hear that Melissa but I’m so glad you’re here!! You can head to this video next! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gkJ-dPg4cyc.html
Hi Melissa..Just in the last month I was told your back is so so much worse..torn disc, two bulging discs, severe stenosis, facet disease, worse arthritis…then stepped in a hole..probably tore my meniscus. They did X-rays abd said bone on bone. I walk, push mow, garden , all the things. Now, everyone is telling my I need to just rest. When I sit it is the worst thing for me. I plan on going camping and hiking again. I got a cortisone shot in my knee..can not really tell. Keep moving as best you can.
Wow what a fantastic and helpful presentation. I listened through to the end and learned many direct actions to improve quality of life. I plan to share this video with several friends and family who I know will benefit from your discussion . Very thankful that I saw this today.
I was told 2 and 6. Ever since I have had this pain, I haven't been able to go walking, mow, and working in my yard and flower beds. That is how I tried to keep myself in shape. When my husband and I go on trips, we do a lot of walking. But since I found out about me having OA, I haven't been able to do all that walking. I am about to buy me a mobile scooter so we can go places on our trips.
