you have to be careful storing papers or anything to have no moisture. probably hard to preserve things in large groups then. your statement makes a lot of sense.

I come from the tropics and didn't quite understand what the deal was... Then I lived there for two years and it's not so much the humidity but the huge swing between seasons that shocked me. You literally have to change all your habits from seasons to seasons in ways beyond merely just changing your clothes like I did in Colorado because if you just keep doing the same you will either dry out like a mummy or drown in your bed.

unfortunately a lot of japanese "recycling" is just burning the plastic to make electricity (other countries do this too)

If talking specifically about why cookies, candies, and other snacks often come individually wrapped, supposedly the Glico/Morinaga poisoning incident in the 1980s had an influence. However, modern tamper-proof packaging technology exists now and most stores have security cameras to catch suspicious actions so why Japan has failed to move away from individual packaging is anyone's guess.

There is one more reason why it is packaged individually. It's because of their giving out culture. In Japan there are many people who likes to share things. Although it may be forbidden by company rules these days, it is common etiquette to give souvenirs to those around you when you go out on a trip or even in such short way like convenience stores.

Explain the coughing not covering mouth. The pollen from cherry blossoms is deadly.

you'll see the older generation who cough incessantly without ever covering their mouths. this is a common theme across a lot of east asian countries i've visited including Korea. a lot of the older generation males (like 60++) absolutely did not give a flying f about stuff such as this lol. it was alarming at first because I thought they were sick with covid or something but no, more than likely just old age cough + old smokers.@@lauriey6089

​@@MonkeyHero In an island nation. Fish is a huge part of traditional Japanese cuisine. Maybe less so these days, but if you're cooking in Japan, it's often fish

@silverhand861 I can't say anything on here about Japan without someone who gets off on sounding like an expert about Japan telling me something really obvious about Japan. Of course I know they eat fish. It's just that I worked in restaurants for years that cooked fish and fish does not NEED a sink for prep. You can use a counter. So I agree with the youtuber, GENERALLY, that counter space is just more valuable than sink space. Yes even to prep fish.

@@MonkeyHero Well I was just trying to clarify that there's good reason for accommodating for fish in Japan. If you don't need a sink to clean fish, then you make a fair point. I wasn't trying to sound like an expert, just provide some info. I understand it's frustrating if people patronise you by telling you stuff you know, but please understand that it's not apparent on here what others do and don't know. A simple "I get that, but you don't need a sink to prepare fish" without the unprompted rant would suffice. But again, I understand the frustration and it sounds like this has happened before. @silverhand861 thanks friend, I'm just getting really worn out in my soul of sharing literally any opinion/perspective I have regarding Japan, and without fail, every time, someone either tells me I have not spent enough time there to have developed that personal opinion/perspective (purity test), or they'll tell me some- to me- obvious factors about Japan. And often times I can tell it's from someone who's never spent a lot of time there, and has simply through osmosis come to know what they think it's like in Japan from watching things online, most likely. Like studying Japan from afar and trying to "well akshually" other peoples remarks to sound... smart, I guess? I'm not saying that's you, it's just that it keeps happening to me. It happened in the last comment I made too and someone asking me how much time I've actually spent there, and another person who only visited for 3 weeks arguing with me. I appreciate you being a kind adult about it and I'm sorry my tired old soul is slowly dying from internet discourse. I truly hope you have a wonderful day.

Even double ply is literally weaker than any double ply in the US or Europe. I'm currently living in Japan and even the "American toilet paper" from Costco is only slightly better than the usual stuff. Like legit the moment you start wiping something with it (which is the point) it starts falling apart in your hands, and the only way I could make it work is by folding it over like 3 times whenever I wipe and heavily using the cleaning function in the toilet seat. My country of origin literally had 3 ply that didn't fall apart in any way and you didn't need to fold it at all (also no JP toiletseat, so u win some and u lose some). In Japan folding it twice is still dangerous cuz your finger might come through the toilet paper mid-wipe, which is quite disgusting and I have no idea how Japan is surviving with this atrocity - the ass cleaning toiletseat is nice, but that on its own isn't sufficient generally, which is why a decent TP is required..

Getting a suica is no problem. For tourists you can buy a "Welcome Suica". For residents you can buy a Suica if you get it with commuter pass.

One trick for tourists is that if you have a Japan Rail pass you can dive into a JR station and find trash cans on the platforms and concourses. You don't actually have to go anywhere.

Its a dilemma. I mostly use IC card now to escape coins. But now even Suica isnt available

¥2000 is about $13-14 USD currently. Also, I live in Tokyo and I accumulate a lot of coins. I save them up and use them at the self checkout at the grocery stores, DAISO, etc. You can also add fare to your IC card (suica, pasmo) with change at most machines.

I'd argue that would be the case for most countries with a bunch of introverted people (for example the Scandinavian countries). Especially if you live in a large (population wise) city.

I've always been baffled by this claim. Regardless of the country, if you can speak the language (doesn't have to be perfect) and just hang out at local restaurants / cafes / bars in your neighborhood you'll meet people and run into familiar faces very quickly.

You're right. It's true. It's the loneliest I've ever felt and I make friends very very easily. I have soft plans to move to japan. My way of addressing this factor is to 1) simply dedicate to learning the language (duh), and 2) just really not self-censor myself when breaking through the usual initial cultural wall of being friendly with people. I'm just going to be my friendly self and be funny and ask questions and just make friends. The worst that will have happened is I was being too friendly- which is hardly a sin- and people won't vibe with it. And the best that can happen is locals will be happy I did the heavy lifting socially to break the ice and I'll make more friends.

Just buy from the google store (online or instore) in your country. Don't get one from tokyo because its has Japan specific software and Electronics are more costlier there.

Suica only works on hardware bought in Japan, so it won't work with your phone. I'm not sure if it would work on the watch only if you buy it in Japan and additionally you would need a Japanese google account as far as I know.
