Funny this video came out the same day I had made up my mind to finally go through all of my old computer hardware laying around - printers, cables, etc, and a couple of old PC's stored in my closets for the last several years. I was tired of moving them around and knew they were too old to bother selling. Soooo, I looked up an E-waste recycling facility and hauled everything down there to be recycled. It felt so good to finally have some extra room and less clutter. Now for the garage...

I have a somewhat related take on all of this. I guess you can say I've been in kind of a rut and I'd become a scrapbook of bad personal habits that, without going into details, became borderline toxic. My mind and my physical surroundings were a mess. Late last year, I found myself unemployed at 53 and feeling a bit down on myself for various reasons, the lack of income notwithstanding. I was entering the dark days of winter in NYC without much to look forward to, and to add to my woes, just 8 months prior I had bought a condo at the beach in South Florida that was still undergoing a costly gut renovation. One day I decided to pack my bicycle along with a few belongings into my car and drive down to Florida before the renovation was finished; I just had to get away from NYC and my dilapidated mental state, even if it meant sleeping for weeks on an air mattress on the floor and inhaling dust. Fast forward three months, the renovation is complete, I am pretty much moved into my Florida place and I have started a dream remote job in senior corporate management earning a ridiculous salary. But that's the least of it. The main thing is that I feel like, by moving to a new city, even temporarily, and leaving all of my things, routines and bad habits behind, I feel reborn. I feel different. I am more mindful and appreciative of everything. I am washing all my dishes from the day before bedtime (something I never did). I have prioritized being outdoors and appreciating the beauty of the ocean, the birds, the sky. I barely watch TV. Without realizing it, I changed myself by leaving all of my physical and figurative "stuff" behind and starting new with nearly empty closets. I feel more focused and more intentional and organized. Now, I realize that not everybody can just pick up and move to another location for several months, and I am grateful that I have options. But I do think there is something universal about the power of reinvention and for me it was as simple as just moving far, far away for a while with just a bike and a suitcase. I know that when I go back to NYC in the summer, I am getting rid of 75% of everything and will channel all that I've learned about myself over the past few months into effecting some permanent changes to my lifestyle. and mindset. Chucking 10 things into the trash is just a start...

Great video! People need to hear that the problems in our lives don’t come from outside, they start from within! It took me over sixty years to figure that out, but the way the world is, people believe that all their problems are because of someone else. We were taught to believe that what you have makes you a better person. Keep up the good work, take care!

Hello John. ***Legend***. Thank you for this great video and your advices! Giving to Goodwill clothes that doesn't fit anymore and items that I have been "attached" to for no reason (especially never using them), gives me a big relief and satisfaction. I know we all have things that we want to keep, it is understandable, but anything else...must go. Also, getting rid of "poisonous" and negative people out of our lives...definitively! I have a couple of friends like that..."downers". I always finish with a headache after talking with them, they are the ones with the half-empty glass of water no matter what...Sorry for the vent. I have been reducing my clutter drastically, especially that every time that I have moved I get rid of things and people too (just try to have them as far away as possible from me). New year, new ideas, new positive thoughts too! Always looking forward to your next video. Thank you again! Stay safe and have fun! Cheers.

One thing we do is rotate clothes so any item that has seen slightly better days after a year or so is worn for indoors only (we work from home so go through alot of lounge clothes plus worn clothes do not look that bad on zoom meetings) then the past lounge clothes are used for jobs round the house painting and DIY etc. Not only do you save money on clothes to lounge in it is also recycling clothes you may throw out. Plus saving money to buy that item of clothing you must have. Love your videos and please keep up the good work.

Now that I am retired its hard to figure out everything else going on in the crazy world. I have viewed the majority of your videos and trying to assimilate to today after some 40 years. I do have a question for you that I have not seen - besides dress pants and dress shirts - what else do you iron these days? Chinos? Polos? Or what do you stay away from? Jeans I don't iron but I am used to everything else. LOL - mom was a stickler going up in the 50 and 60"s. Then the public service just reinforced it. (Jim)

Great vid, again. I’ve been doing this ‘ cleansing’ over the years. The process takes some effort and soul searching to start because many/most of us develop some kind of emotional attachment to certain things, as you mentioned. One additional thing I do is to go thru my toiletries; both over the counter meds, sunscreen, pain pills, etc. and toss all the out of date things. Thanks for this.

Good reminder. General rule: if you haven't used it, worn it, or eaten it in the past year, get rid of it. Obviously, there are exceptions, but it's a good general framework. And speaking of exceptions: things for an emergency. While you're cleaning house, now's a good time to make sure things like fire extinguishers and smoke alarms are in place and functioning properly.

The desire to hang on to things comes from a healthy attitude: a hatred of waste. And that's a good attitude to have...within limits. We're such a wealthy society that nearly all of us hang on to stuff only because we hate to think of it ending up in a landfill. When my parents died, I learned that if you don't throw useless stuff away, it just means that your children will have to do it for you after you die. We just have to accept that landfills exist for a reason and it makes no sense to let stuff accumulate if you're never going to wear or use it again.

I kinda disagree people hold onto things because they bought them and throwing them away seems like wasting your money. I could care less about throwing junk into a landfill

Go through your closet and trash old and outdated clothing or clothing that you don't wear any more or have never wore. You know the ones, with the tags still on.

Get rid of old clutter on your computer. Backup the files you want or need to save and delete the crap that is just taking up space.

8 track tapes and audio cassettes. A used record store will give you cash... not alot but they will probably take them off your hands.

Go to your closet and turn ALL the hangers around. In a year, toss the ones that haven't moved.

While you are in the kitchen, throw out the mismatched and unused coffee mugs and glasses. If your glasses are cloudy, treat yourself to a new set.

I struggle with some of the cleaning because of the family. My wife saves everything. She is an elementary school teacher and claims she can use “everything” for some idea she has. This saved me money, but….lots of “junk” sitting around the house.:/

I struggle every day with the notion that I don't deserve happiness. It's an ongoing battle and severely limits my potential.
