Having turned 66 recently I’ve have transformed myself. I’ve grown out my hair and beard for many months and have since had it styled and have been working out 4 times a week. I feel the best I have ever felt and I look amazing, part of it was from watching your videos. Started to really think of what I am wearing and have been receiving many compliments.
I've been working out on a more regular basis for the past 7 months. What a difference it makes physically and mentally. Applying many f your suggestions has definitely improved my overall style. And when you look good, you walk with your head up high. And you don't have to look like Brad Pitt. Love the sport jacket John.
Great video! How we dress is so important. I’m not talking about wearing a suite. I’m mainly talking about looking presentable. Too many men dress like crap. IE: A wrinkled worn out t shirt and old jeans three sizes to big is common. As others have mentioned eating well and cutting out the junk can help greatly. You will not only look better, it will change the shape of the face and improve your skins appearance. And you will feel so much better. I have dropped more than 40 pounds and kept it off for almost eleven years. Through my diet and mild exercise. Changing your eating habits can be very difficult to stick with at first. But in time your new habits will become much easier and eventually second nature.
A long, long time ago, I worked for a logo shop at a Las Vegas casino. We carried polo shirts and what we called golf shirts. The Collars and Co shirts fall into what we used to term as "golf shirts." Those shirts had the more dress shirt type of collar on a polo type shirt body.
Improving your physique (through diet and/or exercise) is a great way to improve looks. As soon as you start seeing results, it boosts your confidence, which gives an early boost to looks. This also provides motivation to continue working on your physique. This feedback loop continues as you get greater and greater results.
Good advice. I only wish I had taken these things to heart back when I was still going into the office. I only started to learn how to dress better and take care of my grooming after I started working from home full-time.
You're doing a Great Job covering ALL the different topics important to us guys over 40! You've made a huge impact on my life with your advice and suggestions. Seriously, thank you, John...
I been watching your content for a while now and I will say thank you! I couldn’t believe it, I was in a bar and a woman said nice shoes That was the first time in my life a woman liked my shoes Style matters for men as well as women
John, thanks for the “handsomeness”compliments to your viewers. Now, if only I could convince the attractive brunette in the public relations department of the same. In all seriousness, your comments concerning style, grooming, and fitness are spot on. By just taking some little steps gentlemen of culture, we can all be and look amazing.
Thanks for the compliment. I am not disagreeing with your video, but here are some addnedums that were missed. 1) If you gotta wear a t-shirt in public, buy a 3 button long-sleeve Henley. The fabric is usually thinner, and they look great. 2) Wear buttoned shirts in public. Short sleeve, long sleeve, don't care. When properly applied, they also look great and shows you put some effort into your attire. 3) Chinos. Chinos. Chinos. If you have the money, pants made by a tailor that fit and look good is an option. 4) Not saying dress shoes, I am saying Oxfords, Brogues, and loafers. Save your athletic shoes for being athletic. 5) Jeans are still cool and you can wear dress shoes with them! Really! If you're older go for a relaxed fit-jeans, they look good and give a bit of a retro look because that's the way they were originally made. It is the opinion of this author that slim cut pants are ridiculous. 6) John is right about using face care products, especially around the eyes. If you're going to use a soap, use one made with natural ingredients, no chemicals. Your face will love you. 7) Your socks should match your pants. 8) Don't buy clothing that plants their logo on them. You're a man, not a billboard. 9) Don't go all black clothes unless you're going to a formal-semi formal event or you're a vampire. Black shirt, pants, jacket by themselves are fine, just don't "Goth out". 10) Treat yourself and buy a decent hat (If you gotta wear a hat). Fedora, Panama, or a newsboy flat cap. If you're playing for or rooting for the Padres, buy a baseball cap. Another 10 for another day. Slainte Mhath, R.A.
You always give such great and easy to use advice. 3:15, those look great! Sweats and sneakers ain't gonna cut it. Put on a shirt with a collar and some khakis/jeans that fit. (These acts will not kill you.... i promise). And Samuel Hubbard makes a great casual, comfy, and stylish shoe. Bingo, it looks like I am trying!
Clothes that fit for the win! Observing most men, I think they could down size one shirt size and look way better. This was me. Just check to see where the sleeve seam lands on your shoulder. If it's on your arm, the shirt is wrong size. If you wear dress shirts, stop buying S,M,L and get one that fits your neck size and sleeve length, i.e. 16"- 33/34. For those, try slim fit if that fits your body style. These tips will help you look less frumpy and up your game. Speaking from experience. #Legend
I agree, but for some men, those sizes don't readily exist. I wear a 14 1/2" neck with a 34 sleeve. For most of my life, I could buy either a 14 1/2" neck with a 32/33 sleeve, or a 15" neck with a 34/35 sleeve. A tailor can't lengthen the sleeves. And a tailor can't readily alter the shoulders and neck. (And at that time, I really couldn't afford made-to-measure or bespoke.) With online shopping, I've *finally* found three brands that fit in both the sleeves and the neck/shoulders.
I'm 41 and great shape always hit the gym 3 times per week!! Got wider more bulky even my spouse noticed, she love how I look don't have abs but for her I'm perfecto!!😅
keep in mind the bar is so low these days. Most men are not well groomed, are obese, and wear poor clothing, following what John said will set you apart from the vast majority of men.
I (seriously) go a different way. I want to blend in, to be unnoticed, to be left alone. I'm not looking to attract attention from anyone. It works, almost totally, and if anyone approaches me, I know to be suspicious. When I do talk to someone, it' s typically by my own choice and I let my words carry the weight, not my looks. He's right, good grooming and clothes choices will pay off if you want at an "acceptable" rating from others, and you will stand out form the ones like me who are blandly dressed and casually groomed. My point is if you want to fly under the radar, make choices such as basic clothes, simple car, non-flashy watch, all that.
I am glad you started saying 'your handsomeness,' (correct), instead of 'your handsome', but then you went back to 'your handsome', then back to 'handsomeness' a minute later. LOL. Great video, John. Many thanks. Nice burgundy jacket, btw.
I have long gray hair and a very full beard and moustache. This look can be rather hellish if you are out of shape or don't pay attention to the fit of your clothes. I was showing my wife of almost 40 years an outfit that I put together, Brooks Brothers poplin sport coat, nice t-shirt, blue chinos and A.E. loafers. She said "Damn, you could be a model" she dosent give compliments lightly.
I just tried to place an order but it states invalid promo code. I am based in Canada but I guess that to promo code is not available to residents in Canada.
I agree with all your insights. I think a good place to begin is with the image of a typical older male: Unhealthy, apathetic, bitter, overweight/beer belly, graying hair, unkempt beard, ill-fitting clothes that attempt to mask his unhealthiness, baseball cap, no skin care, etc. Start by systematically reversing every facet of this image and you are on your way to becoming 10x more attractive in the eyes of most women.
It is said that if you don't get many compliments about your looks then you may be very handsome! People who see you as handsome will not tell you because they think you have heard it many times. This applies to men who make an effort to look good. Those men who are slobs, don't get compliments because they are truly not handsome.
1. As with anyone else, get clothes that fit well. 2. Wearing light color shirts (or shirts with light horizontal stripes across the chest) will make your torso/chest look larger. 3. Or double down on looking thin by wearing dark shirts. 4. Avoid v-neck t-shirts, which make a long thin neck look even longer and thinner. 5. Shirts with tall collars hide how long and thin the neck is (even if the top button or two are open). 6. Sport coats, blazers, and suit jackets add size and structure to the shoulders. Thin guys can even pull off double-breasted jackets. 7. If your arms are super-skinny, wear long-sleeve shirts. (Rolling up the sleeves is optional.) 8. If your arms are average-ish, make certain that short-sleeves land at the middle of your bicep. Furthermore, have your tailor take in the excess material on the shirt sleeve. The optical illusion will make your bicep look larger, not smaller. 9. Similarly, baggy shorts make thin legs look thinner. Have your tailor take in any excess material in the legs of your shorts. 10. If you have thin wrists, buy watches that are appropriately small. If there's a specific area that I overlooked, let me know. I'll try to address it. In addition, The Modest Man channel is geared towards short, thin men. Therefore, some of his material is relevant to taller thin men.
I respect/like Mark Cuban. IMHO, the button-down-collar popover is the way-to-go. Polos at $50 or $500 are the equivalent of T-shirts. Never pair with a cardigan or blazer; it's a continuity thing. Another site mentions Collars&Co; nothing against this channel. Like most of the content.
Whatever hand of cards we have been dealt in the handsomeness stakes, being overweight is definitely unattractive. Clothes usually look so much better on a frame that is trim. The rest is down to a regime of good grooming and hygiene.
It's one thing not being slovenly and unhygienic, but why should men try to be more "handsome"? I mean, what kind of women are you trying to attract? Superficial and shallow ones. Personally I'm only interested in women who value my inner self, my kindness and sense of humour.
Thanks John.. and I forgot to give you props the other day on insta for leading me to Montblanc legend spirit... it's been a go to for me for a couple years now during warmer months and business day...
I’m an 89-year YOUNG man. I’ve been a widower for 3 years and I’m just getting back into the dating scene again. My scrotum hangs to my knees, my skin looks like transparent leather and I’ve only got 3 natural teeth left in my mouth. I love your channel and style and would love any advice for me to increase my chances of finding love again. 🙏
I wanted some new jeans for work so I wore a slim fit, white dress-shirt & my charcoal suit jacket with jeans to the mall to get the outfit right. I was the best dressed person there & turned heads it was really powerful. Felt like a king.
Great episode...so much of handsomeness is a function of "want to"...how much a person is willing to work on the things he/she can control. We can't control our cheekbones, but we can control so many other things that if a person "wants to", they can totally improve their appearance and perception. Skin, fingernails, hair (or not), teeth, clothes that fit that aren't from the '90's....
Hi John, in the last two years I've focused on upgrading my style. I feel terrific, I appreciate your content, it's helped me dramatically. Here's a suggestion, eyewear, so many men my age are wearing frames that are completely out of date and it makes them look old. I get so many compliments on my glasses and sunglasses. Reach higher men, it makes a difference.
Which perfectly encapsulates the absolute pathetic shallowness and disgusting era we are in with modern women. Never in my life have a met a man worried about the car or job a woman has. *Sigh*
Yeah but being rich AF is actually your weakest hand in terms of keeping a woman around. Very rich men get cheated on way more than poorer men and often to men much poorer. If you can improve your looks by any means then do so teeth hair transplant etc. I don’t recommend limb surgery as it is very dangerous!
It’s easy to fall into that lazy Walmart shopper mode, especially while seeing everyone else not caring about their appearance/clothes. A little effort goes a long way; just consider putting in a little more than a little more 😊
I used to think I was average looking and then a woman at work told me I was handsome. It surprised me but I decided to take that and run with it. I got on RU-vid and searched for older men's fashion, this was the first site I found. I have made some changes and notice the way people react towards me. I'm not looking to meet women (I have been married 45 years) but it's nice to get the looks and smiles.
I’ve always worn suits for work and love the way it makes me feel. When you walk in anywhere, people take notice and I think you tend to walk taller and more confident when you are dressed well…what I lacked was any style in my casual wear and thanks to your channel and a few others I’ve been able to level up my casual outfits to give me that same confidence…thx!
I've found it helpful to have a younger woman's feedback when clothes shopping. They're in touch with contemporary fashion trends and can help find things that look good on mature men.
8:49 I learned from The Charisma Myth several ways to automatically increase your charisma. Both with people and even with yourself. Make eye contact long enough to get their eyecolor. Slow down your speech. (Because important people are not in a hurry.) And compliment somebody. But on something they have control over like a shirt that they picked or the shoes that they’re wearing. Not that they’re handsome or tall because they have no control over that.
I'm starting to workout and change my diet to a mich healthier setup. It is working out fairly well so far and ive lost almost 20lbs so far. I just have to stay with it so that I can achieve my fullest potential.
As far as Collars & Company... I appreciate the discount, but I'll have to pass on the polos. Maybe they're comfortable. However, some of the styles are just out there, IMHO. The red-and-black plaid and the red-and-black gingham are a bit on the grandpa side. The Greenwich multi-plaid look similar to some bedsheets that I saw at IKEA. Their sweaters look OK, though.
👏👏👏👏 Well said John that was exactly me once!! I lost 35kg and improved my style , there was no looking back!! I have met someone amazing who pushes all of my buttons. Hopefully I continue to push hers too. Great advice mate Pete from Australia 🦘
Great Video. Thank You. You said it perfectly... it all starts with you! Believe in yourself, attain some confidence, be the best person you can be, and the rest will fall into place!
Take it from a lady, this fellow is giving great advice! Especially on the topic of grooming! I personally like a guy with a beard, but I'm not interested in Grizzly Adams.
6’4’’ very muscular well educated with good sense of humor, male 54. Primary barrier for seducing young women is my wife ready to smack in my face with a frying pan… and the fact that young women see me as a grandpa… besides those two minor issues, I am golden 😅😅😅
I was absolutely pursued by a man who drove a fancy car because I laughed at him when he spoke about it. I hated driving around in his Mercedes coupé because I was brought up to believe that being ostentatious was nouveau riche. I hated it. Wealth whispers.
Hey Jon, which cut from Collars & Co. do you think works best w/ a sports coat - the English Spread, Semi-Spread, or Button Down? Also, I LOVE that sweater/jacket you're wearing here... the color, the peak lapel. I've got to get one of those. Would you tell us where you got it? Thanks for another great video!
I cannot subscribe to your newsletter. Error "Recipient "" has too many recent signup requests". Also I cannot access some of the items in your store as the Amazon links are dead :-(
Everything mentioned here is spot on. Just be forewarned, guys; you may get more attention than you can handle, seriously! If you aren’t looking for that special someone, consider just being your usual self-of course, eat healthy and stay fit. I know of guys who are just a little bit stylish who avoid going to certain stores and other places around town to avoid being “hit on” by the attractive ladies and their adult daughters. So, be stylish at your own risk.
John! Killing it with this one. I seriously think if you wear clothes that fit, have a kick ass hair style, you are already 75% there! Rock on. #legend
I dress well, and often receive compliments. Better customer service even. But it is subjective too. For example I think one of the ugliest pieces of clothing is a polo shirt. They just look scruffy and yuck to me. Other obviously disagree... Tips about silhouettes and clothing to correct body proportions are less subjective... but specific pieces clothing is absolutely personal preference.
Another good one John! 👍🏼 I’ve been seeing a lot about those shirts all over the place lately. Now that you’re wearing them as well, it may be time to check them out.
