The first time I watched Minty I wasn't sure. It seemed like a bald Australian guy/ nerd who filmed in the back of an echo chamber. Then I absolutely was bowled over by his knowledge, character and love for the subject. Now I get excited every time a video drops on RU-vid! Don't change a thing and hopefully you will do a project on 1981 epic medieval fantasy Excalibur (film)!
Just a heads up, Mighty Minty is mostly 99% more entertaining than the movies he reviews. I rarely, if ever, miss his show. My wife and I usually enjoy his program in the morning over coffee. We live in California, so the timing is perfect. There is no better way to start the day than with a Minty review of a movie with him.We sometimes go up to three movies a week in the theater, and we're in our sixties. So we have seen damn near every film he's reviewed, and I used to be in the Halloween mask and prop business. I have so seriously cool stuff and really enjoy his views. Anyway, Minty is just a joy to watch, and he always deserves a big shout out from our insane state California. I would definitely offer to be his tour guide and take him out for some snacks to talk movies. I love to talk about movies. He's a good man. My father said the Australians were some of the toughest S.O.B.'s he met in WWII. They were also some of the nicest people as well..... 3:56
I remember seeing this in the cinema and being hyped for it. I didn't care that the snakes looked cartoonish or exaggerated, I wanted a fun monster movie and that's exactly what I got. The swallowing scene alone was worth the price of admission.
That scene where Voight's character gets swallowed whole and the camera's perspective is from inside the snake......legit well done. My thoughts as a teenager "this is exactly why I watched this movie".
Other than the Owen Wilson scene, the cgi is exceptional. Even the movements are great. Way faster than any giant snakes but it looks real, realistic texture, lighting, etc. So much so the animatronic actually takes me out of it more. The python in Harry Potter year 2000 looks much worse.
@@dantan1249 I watched this movie when it first came out and at that time, I thought the CGI was terrible and I still do. I think the people who own this movie should go back and re-render all the CGI and that will make it better. Plus, a lot of the acting was horrible too.
Michael Caine was offered Jon Voights role, but he refused because he was sitting by the phone waiting for the Oscar committee to call about his work on Jaws 4
More like, fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. That said his performances in the Dark Knight trilogy as Alfred suck in my opinion. His performance in Jaws 4 reminds me of my real life Aunt's and Step Uncle's own Barbados holiday romance which happened the same time as the VHS release of Jaws 4! They are still happily married and somewhat looks like their fictional counterparts too.
Caine has said in several interviews that he only did Jaw 4 for for the money. “ I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”
I remember seeing this is the theater in high school. The three big talked about moments were a wet J'Lo, the snake puking up John Voight, and the tracula scene.
I took my gf at the time to see this as she was terrified of snakes. It was a fun cheesy movie. I also liked the second one as well. Minty, I absolutely love your channel.
I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid. The snake really doesn’t look that bad at all. Sure the CGI in some scenes doesn’t look good, but the majority of it looks great. The animatronic looks great too. Way better than a lot of the stuff coming out nowadays if you ask me
It was a standout movie, played on every irrational fear of giant snake lore fascinatingly, even that bulging human-engorged swimming snake scene, cgi and animatronics on-point because of the great physical acting, a pleasure of a creature flick for sure.
Also worth noting that Anaconda had a video game tie-in promotion in the form of a custom map (called Temple of the Mist) made for the 1996 FPS game Quake, that features Dual UZI-wielding Snake Men and a Giant Fire-breathing Anaconda as the end level boss. I'm not even kidding, the movies Wikipedia page even mentions this.
It's a bit of a mixed bag. There are 2 or 3 shots where it looks really quite decent, but there are also a fair few that are pretty terrible, even for 97. The Lost World came out that year and still looks absolutely fantastic today.
CGI could have been hit or miss in those days, as rendering technologies (and computer hardware) had less resources for trying to get realistic rendering with raytracing (or simulating light reflection with the scene's environment). Since ILM had created a lot of the software conventions, they also knew what limitations there were. They got around with rendering limitations by having a lot of the CGI in dark environments.
Tbh the cgi wasn’t even bad in this movie. There is that one shot when the snake is eating Owen Wilson but it really didn’t look terrible most of the time. The worst part in terms of the effects was the practical floppy tail. Until maybe the later Harry Potter movies, this was the best snake effects in cinema.
In 1997 I was a senior in high school. My buddies and I went to the theatre to see this…twice. It was so fun. Speaking about random actors in this movie, we said the same thing back in 97 😂
I have great memories of seeing this movie in the theatre. We drove 45 minutes to go to one of the first theatres to offer dine in. 2 of us ordered margaritas and early in the movie when the waitress came to deliver them she tripped and spilled them all over us. Good times-lol
Anacondas: The hunt for the blood orchid is pretty good I think. I actually like it a little better than the original. I wouldn't bother with the others however.
"Blood orchid" is actually pretty tense, as long as you ignore that it takes place on Borneo, Indonesia, where you don't find such creatures as laughing monkeys and, yes, anacondas.
@@dantan1249 It had a better plot with an original idea for a creature features movie, and better CGI since the giant anacondas look realistic instead of terrible and fake.
I was born in 88 so I was the PERFECT age to think this movie was badass. And I still do. It's always been a b cheese fest but we knew that back then and still loved it. Silly good stuff
Loved your Sean Connery skit you did...Hilarious! Had to rewind to watch it again! Didn't know it was dubbed to edit out swearing & I forgot about the wide variety of actors that were in it. Might have to pop it back on for Fun Friday Movies at my house! Also being October makes it a perfect Monster Movie. Thanks, Minty!
*I remember seeing this movie at A drive-in somewhere between the GoldCoast and Brisbane when we were on holidays back in the late 90s. I'm pretty sure it was a double feature with men in black. The sequel "Anacondas" isn't too bad either*
Speaking of Brisbane, Jonathan Hyde ("the guy who sank (not really, not even his character) the Titanic" according to Minty) is from Brisbane too, although he doesn't currently live there. In fact, I'd say he's probably somewhere around London at the moment (I don't know the exact address, and I don't intend to get it, he's entitled to his own privacy outside of work). Oh, how do I know this? Well, I'm a big fan of his.
As a young boy at the time and being my sec ever movie theater experience I loved it. My cousin took me with her we had a blast. She also took me to the first ever Jurassic park movie. Those two films will forever for my fav.
I actually just watched The Hunt for the Blood Orchid last week, and it actually wasn't that bad. It's still a SIFI-tier movie, but one of the better ones.
Thanks for an enjoyable video! Please do The Relic (1997) next. It's that other creature feature from 1997 that got a thumbs up from the late Roger Ebert. And just like this one, a movie I also happen to like.
As someone who is totally ophidiophic, this movie terrified me despite the bad CGI! Much to the enjoyment of my wife. 😂😂😂 Yes, it's cheesy, but it's a lot of fun.
That Sean Connery impression did make me chuckle. Minty, please, please, please could you do a 10 things about one of my favourite films, Blue Thunder? Thanks :)
Not really into snake movies but for some crazy, unexpected reason I loved the Anaconda movies have all of them on DVD and watch them from time to time so they are still very much popular with me I can honestly say.
Have you done The Relic??? I remember watching The relic and Anaconda in mexico, released both in 1997. I agee with roger Ebert in that these movies are great for what they are I guess. They were not direct to video B movie releases but actual legit big movie releases that got attention. I think Anaconda had great ideas and animation but lacked the quality cgi rendering of ILM at the time. Anaconda is more thriller/horror nature primal creature movie and The Relic is more mystical horror sci/fi, mystery movie, but actually scary at times.
I was touring the United States when Anaconda opened in cinemas way back in 1997. I only got to watch it on cable TV here in the Philippines some time after.
Love this movie. I watched it so many times as a kid. lol I don't think effects are all that bad to me at least for me it holds up better what we have now when it comes to Disney movies lol. Great video Minty.
Thank you! I had been waiting for this for a long time. A wonderful day-saver and one of my favourite films, even if it's not a masterpiece. :D And Westridge is my favourite character, but only because he is played by Jonathan Hyde. :D Besides, his character changes the most during the film. In the beginning, his character is a whiny, snobbish, fancy pants. And at the end he becomes a hero. He saves Terry and Danny's lives, at the cost of his own. And one of his best lines is; Asshole in one! Just before he hits Serone with his golfclub.
Anaconda:the hunt for the blood orchid, was a great sequel. In a lot ways it's much more enjoyable than the first film. Not that the first film is bad, in fact I really enjoyed both of them immensely.
I saw this in theatres when I was 8 years old, with my mum, and it was a good thing she was with me, because: 1. As a kid, I had a problem with Megalophobia (the fear of large objects), and 2. As a Christian, I also had the belief that snakes are evil, since it was a snake that got Adam and Eve in trouble with the Lord above, resulting in them being banished from the Garden of Eden. Also, J. Lo also starred in the docudrama, Selena, which was about the late Tejano Queen.
I really enjoyed Anaconda for what it was, and even now it's notable for the incredible animatronic snake puppets. One thing that never ceases to surprise me is which movies Siskel and Ebert did or didn't enjoy.
Fun Fact: When presented on TV, *"ANACONDA"* was extended with three extra scenes that're not in the final cut. Though oddly, the second scene where our main characters - before meeting Paul Serone - come across a group of monkeys that screech & howl in alarm was no longer shown in recent TV airings. The first & final TV scene also featured Jonathan Hyde (who plays Warren Westridge) with a rather high-pitched sounding voice.
A bit hyped to see Lake Placid vs Anaconda. Didn't know it existed until now. Robert England and Yancy Butler are in it, so it'll be at least nice seeing them in a movie.

Dr. Minty is in the house! I lost it. Keep up the good work. I remember when it came out. I was entertained. I also saw the Black Orchid release. Maybe one other. Dumb, but fun. I've been on the Amazon in Brazil. First day out we were going out to hike thru the jungle on one of the islands. We wore leather legging because of the poisonous snakes. Good times.

I remember stumbling on this movie (literally) while I was wasting time waiting for a get together with a group of friends down the street. I visited the Los Angeles Arboretum in Arcadia and wandering about as it was one of the places my mum and I loved to go to. As I was wandering I actually got to meet the director's daughter, and we chatted a bit until we had to go. I told her I looked forward to seeing her dad's movie when it came out, and it was a fun watch. Sometimes life drops you some very random moments!
You didn't mention this, but I think that part of the appeal of this movie for me came from the excitement I had over the roller coaster of the same name that opened in King's Dominion amusement park in Virginia about 6 years prior to this film. The ride itself isn't much, especially if you compare it to the coasters built since, but it had good marketing and the logo when it first came out was really cool. I still have a mug I got from KD when I was there around the same time of the coaster opening. I didn't even ride it probably for another 10+ years because I was about 7 when the coaster opened and didn't ride roller coasters until years later.
I love this movie. It made me want to know of snakes actually grew that big and to my surprise, THEY DO! It's already documented that snakes eat people and for some reason people doubt that it's possible when there's evidence of it. Even here on RU-vid there's a video of a village cutting open a killed snake to discover Watiba inside of it. A woman that went missing in Indonesia.
Great video, Minty! I really dig Anaconda, I remember seeing it in theaters in 1997. I'd say watch Anacondas, it's a fun bad movie, directed by Dwight H Little who directed Halloween 4!
Despite knowing it was a bit naff, this is was of my favourite films as a child, and I still enjoy it now. Just the other night I watched it with my 11 year old daughter for the first time and she absolutely loved it as well.
The 4th one, iirc, had Witchblade herself, Yancy Butler, and everyone's favorite dwarf, Gimli, John Rhys-Davie. Don't really remember that much about it though lol. Thanks Minty, I'll have to give this a rewatch. Been a minute, or 10, or 20, lol :)
