This was the first movie I went and saw with my mom after she got divorced. She loved the message of everyone having control over their own destiny, and ended up buying the film when it came out. We lost her four years ago. So, I can't see this movie without thinking of her. RIP Mom.
5 years later, your mother is still a legend stay strong my friend. I won't give you a sunshine and rainbows speech, I lost my father in 2016 grief isn't a simple process its never easy but I will tell you this with time, it becomes manageable even tolerable. In honor of our fallen guardians they achieved... Flawless Victory
Kevin what did you mother die from I'm sorry abut your loss did you father like mortsl kombst fun fact did you know this movie acthuly help get psul ws Anderson to direct hsvdnt hirzon
Here's another fact about the movie that Minty did not mention Australian actor Trevor Goddard played the personality lacking Kano in the movie and Midway was so impressed by how he portrayed Kano that in future games Kano shared the same characteristics as Goddard's portrayal right down to the Aussie accent. And Goddard wasn't Australian. He was born and raised in England and adopted an Australian persona when he started his acting career.
Mortal kombat was the first movie that made me jump all over my bed and fighting hordes of invisible sub-zero’s while pretending I’m scorpion. Then getting caught by my mom and being throughly embarrassed lol
@@serendipity_hunter3974 I still have my fire ball throwing style down from back in the day (OK it was originally a ha do ken, whatever) so I totally hear where you're coming from. They should put together a Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat game already. I bet M Bison would have some sweet Fatalities.
any thoughts on the new trailer? We get to see Kano's Open Heart Surgery! I know the official name for the Fatality is just "Heart Rip", but that always seemed so lame, just like Sub-Zero's "Spine Rip" (I called it the Spinal Tap)
On 7 June 2003, Kano was found dead in his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. He was 40 years old. Initial reports indicated that Kano was in the process of getting a divorce and that suicide was suspected.[2][3] An autopsy later showed that Kano died from an accidental drug overdose of heroin, cocaine, temazepam and vicodin.[4]
JFTR, no actor wanted to star in the Mortal Kombat movie more than Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa(Shang Tsung). I read in the "Making Of" book that at the open audition, he was the only one to wear a costume, then stood on a chair to recite Tsung's entire speech from the tournament opening. Needless to say, his enthusiasm and preparation paid off!
I'm pretty sure that Minty deliberately mispronounces at least one word in each video. Not sure if he does it as a kind of fun game to tease his viewers or to draw people to comment on the vids, raising their RU-vid rankings.
Do you go over the script that you say during your videos? Proofread it? Maybe you should. Seems like almost every video that you have made about a film, as of late, has mispronunciations in it.
I've still got it on my playlist! It's great to be sitting at a stoplight, then turning your head towards the car next to you and screaming "MORTAL KOMBAT!!!" with the song...then driving off. 😆 Another good song to do the driving/stoplight shenanigans with is AC/DC's "Big Balls". WE'VE GOT THE BIGGEST BALLS OF THEM ALL!!! 😎🤣
I'm an audio phile I love beats bass and tones. I like dub step even tho I don't like dub step . Just to hear the woomp this song makes me a cheetah on the the treadmill and makes people smile when I turn it up in my car
I got to watch this movie when I was like 8 in an empty movie theater in Hesperia California. My brother-in-law worked there and I got to view it after hours with all the candy, popcorn, and soda I wanted. This movie is close to my heart.
The sequel needed more effort and time, and try and get the original cast back in... I mean we had what? 3 of the original cast. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Kitana. Sonya was changed, Raiden was changed, hell even Jax was changed. And they white washed Mileena... And had Sonya make short work of her.. what a joke. I could of looked past the terrible flaws, script, extremely bad burping CGI, actor/actress changes and terrible storyline. But couldn't get past how they buried my princess Mileena... To this day it angers the crap out of me. -edit; Yes it's been corrected multiple times that a different guy played Johnny Cage.. I still think they look very similar. LoL
@@inaaronshead7331 not just Mileena but especially how they killed off a lot of fan favorite characters like Baraka, Rain, and Sheeva so fast without any action/fight scenes with them in it.
@@FrankietheMCUCollector I still like to believe that was just 3 random Tarkatan warriors.. I did get pissy over Sheeva just having a little scuffle with Motaro and then having a cage dropped on her. I may have to re-watch, I don't remember rain being in it at all. But come on man Mileena... 😢
Have you ever seen the 2000 film "Just Visiting"? The film co-stars Bridget, and, in my opinion, not only is she extremely hot, but it's probably one of her most hilarious performances.
@@TortureBot I think he was referring to right when the statue turns into Reptile you hear Ed Bloone say the name "Reptile" as he does in the actual video game with all the characters.
I'll never forget some kid shouting "It has BEGUN" in the theater while walking through the aisle prior to the movie starting. He used the arm movements and all. That was the ultimate pump up.
I saw something similar with a Star Wars prequel movie. It was two guys that knew eachother and even had concealed lightsabers with them. They began yelling and actually even started to duel inside the theatres and people began cheering. It looked like a Disney staged act instead. It was after this that over here they began banning lightsabers, people dressed up as Darth Vader, or using masks inside the theater. After that, fun was over for us. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
It's my childhood movie. It means to me what Goonies probably ment to the 80s kids :) I used to love it, and I still like it very much. Besides the fact CGI effects aged poorly, the movie holds up very well. It has a simple, and as old as the hills plot and character archetypes, but due to the great cast, good direction and fight choreography, great atmopshere and score, and an amazing soundtrack, the movie is still very enjoyable!
A large part of what makes Mortal Kombat so memorable is how awesome Cary Tagawa is as Shang Tsung. Also, I had a huge crush on Bridgette Wilson as a kid.
you know, now that I've thought about it for a week, Tom Cruise isn't that crazy of an idea. True, he wasn't yet a mega action star. But ever since Risky Business, ray*bans have been part of his signature look. And what is Johnny Cage's most famous accessory? His $500 sunglasses (asshole).
I want to give the crew member who kicked tom off set a high five ✋, can't believe he was considered for Cage knowing Tom I can't see him playing the sidekick character he'd probably be like what if Johnny Cage wins not Liu Kang?
Let's not kid ourselves, that soundtrack was EXCELLENT! It made for great morning workout music and was even better as sparring music. Good times. Good times.
Robin Shou & Linden Ashby reunited while playin the mk 1up arcade machine & answered questions bout the movie.Cary Tagawa was also in the tekken movie as heihachi
@@VictorHernandez-nj2lo Heihachi can already match Akuma powerset, & it is already Bandai/Capcom canon. Deathmatch is too biased. Below is a link to a match and you can see a Akuma vs. Heihachi battle. In the story mode Akuma speaks that he was waiting for Heihachi to be his "equal" in battle. Shang Tsung is a good sorceror but not skilled enough to defeat either of these characters. Maybe Bison perhaps. Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QGjP3TyjpIc.html

Yep! In a Midway game called Revolution X and in Stepmania by konami. Best parts of movie: [Scorpion and Sub-Zero walk in].. "Scorpion and Sub-Zero....deadliest of enemies...but slaves under my power." - Shang Tsung And.... The video game voice of "Reptile" when he takes ninja form EPIC!
As a kid, my mother had to hide the VHS of this because my brother and I kept fighting each other acting out parts of the movie and hurting each other and things in the house. Eventually she forgot where she put it and I found it in a drawer like two or three years later.
Yea, and it actually helped the film do well.. Imagine that right? Though I would have loved to see what the R rated version of the film would have been like.. Since to me even back then I felt that it should have been a movie with a R rating, and things where dumbed down for the same reasons why back then especially.. Comic book based movies got dumbed down. ( Basically, it was seen as a "for kids" thing and of course should not be something that would have a R rating.. Despite the base material not being for little kids really. )
@@UndyingZombie Studios don't know what people want. They think audiences are stupid and need their hand held through everything. This has been eating at me since I first learned the new movies' plot, but I can't imagine that there is any MK fan in the world who actually wants to see a completely original character, some random UFC fighter, as the main focus of the movie instead of Liu Kang. If you're seeing an MK movie, you more than likely already know the plot of the franchise. You don't need some surrogate to have everything explained to him on your behalf.
Yes but the 2nd film was so bad and barely followed the plot of the 2nd game it was more based on the 3rd game especially since a few MK3 characters Sindel Cyrex/Seckor ARE in that film.
@Veghesther it was really bad, to be sure. But at least the screenwriters had a basic grasp of the plot of the game. The new writers I can imagine just sat around pouting about how they hated having to work on a video game movie, and just picked characters a random with zero interest in remaining faithful to canon. Yeah, I hate that in the original Scorpion and Sub-Zero were just henchmen for Shang Tsung. But the characters in the new film just like a never ending series of insults.
I'm a massive Brandon Lee fan and didn't know that he was considered Liu Kang, if he hadn't have died whilst filming The Crow he would have made this film so much better!!!
Just think Brandon Lee, Cameron Diaz, and John Claude Van Damme as the main actors and at the peak height of their careers this movie would've been an even bigger blockbuster hit! 🤷♂️
I think the thing we wanted from these movies was accuracy to the games we're playing and must movies never hit the mark.... But this one came closer than most
The feeling of having a crowd behind you while you conduct a fatality that no one has seen was so much fun. The Arcade days were so wholesome. Quarters, snacks, and no fuckin cell phones.

I heard that after the movie was over, they hated that puppet so much, that they literally got rid of it. It was crumbling apart and they just threw it over a cliff in Thailand.
@@wally4087 it's a smaller sized clay version of the puppet which he has, I believe it is similar in size to the one featured in the first Mortal Kombat game which was a small sized prototype.
Often overlooked Mortal Kombat film and James Bond film connection: the islands used for Mortal Kombat are the same islands used for the villain's lair in "The Man With The Golden Gun."
How did you overlook that this movie permanently changed Kano's origin thanks to Trevor Goddard's performance? Originally described as being Japanese-American but not one of the more popular characters this wasn't really explored. Goddard, an English actor, tried to play him with a cockney accent but it came across as Australian so they ran with it and every iteration of the character since has been Australian. How would you miss something Australian?
Still wondering if the pharmacist from Superstore can make a believable Kano. The actor is from Queensland, Australia, but he doesn't look buff enough. I get a Conan O'Brien vibe from his looks. He's not tiny, but from what I've seen, he didn't work the arms/chest out enough. If his acting chops are great, hopefully he'll pull it off.
I remember the day they wheeled MK2 in the door of the local pool hall. The delivery guy gave us 50 free plays each player to stop playing MK1 and let him swap them out.😀
Also agree. It had a bunch of problems, but it had moments where you could see they were trying to make a good show. It also helps that they cast very attractive actresses (look at the IMDB listing), and even had taekwando Olympic gold medalist Dana Hee for a side character (and as part of the stunt team).
I remember, I'd order Wings and a Hot Sub Sandwich from this Pizza place and watch WCW and it would come on after. Monday Nights were awesome back in 98/99. Siro was awesome. It's too bad it didn't do well and didn't have a good production. I Literally joined the military the same week it went off the air.
I’m honestly surprised he didn’t mention how the actor who played Shang Tsung in the movie would later go on to reprise his role in Mortal Kombat 11. Tbh I think he does a much better job portraying Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11 a lot more than he did in the movie.
I actually think the rating was a good idea, especially for kids like me who's parents were too strict to let us play the game, but were ok with letting us see the movie. Also; the cartoon was great! And yes, Goro was a triumph of animatronics, and is still amazing!
I will never forget the screams and cheers all around the movie theater sub-zero and scorpion showed up on the boat in the beginning.. Never been to a movie where i felt energy period
I remember having to stand in line on my lunch break to buy tickets for the opening showing. The theatre was packed and everyone was excited for its release. You could tell everyone was huge fans of the game as we all cheered throughout the movie. By far the greatest movie experience Ive ever had.
If you want the R-Rated experience then watch the animated 2020 release: " Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge" solid story, animation, and didn't skimp on the violence from the franchise
I believe why the 1995 film didn't have the graphic violence and blood and guts was not only to make PG-13 and so younger people can go and see it, to make it more realistic and grounded in reality.
@@RyoUrawa777 I'm not taking about Liu Kang. I am talking about the violence. Why people's heads don't get ripped off. Torsos being cut in half. People exploding. Know what I mean?

MINTY, why didn't you mention that RAYDEN, in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, was voiced by CLANCY BROWN who played the KURGAN in HIGHLANDER along side CHRISTOPHER LAMBERT and SEAN CONNERY. That makes three Mortal Kombat/Highlander connections. Three different immortals meant to portray the same immortal Rayden.
Awe. It sad to hear Steve James died. I was a fan of his from his action films from the ‘80s. My brother and I always said he would be the perfect actor for Jax and to find out he was going to be Jax, but he passed away before filming makes me real sad. Rest In Peace Steve James. You are missed.
I remember my cousins and I really liking the American ninja movies and had always hoped he would get his own American Ninja movie. Maybe Joe trained him and commissioned him to be a ninja. Sadly we never got that. Thankfully he did do a pretty cool movie where he takes on the KKK and him and Dudikoff did another movie as well where they take on some crazy human hunters.
I saw the first game at the mall with my mom in a huge glass case of it's own outside the video game store. It was $70 US. That' would be allot more now. I did not get the game that day but I did eventually for SEGA Genesis. I got the blood code from a friend and I never forgot it. ABACABB
Im 37 and i remember spending $70 for mk3 and struggling to save another $70 for mk3 ultimate and people complain these days about spending $59 and a $3 dlc character....lol
Yes, I liked this movie, but like Paul WS Anderson’s adaptation of Alien vs.Predator are proof trying to force PG-13 rating on gory source material makes a harsh compromise. You know, before he turned to making endless Resident Evil movies to keep his wife happy.
Well, there is gore and death in the film. That man shatters into gore, and Scorpion has his chunks, and human hand, fly everywhere. Plus, MK1 was more tame, and PG13 is meant to be the legacy of PG, before 1984. Just look at the recent bond films. Even MK could do more, with said rating. Most films that inspired and shocked kids were PG, because you're aloud admission, yet the severity may be what you find in an R film. It is about what TV14 can do. This all more mimics MK being in pizzahuts and family restaurants. R, the bigger part of the audience would feel like they snuck in, or found their father's stash of something. I say it's best done via story atmosphere, with just shocking mements, like in Indy. The film is the only one that feels like its inspirations, feeling like a tough, genuine action film, with the fantasy stuff giving off a dark fantasy film tone, the whole thing being more like a before 1984 dark fantasy film with some dark fantasy film shocking mements.
Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion in Hell would've fit just fine in an R-rated film. The soundtrack certainly feels like it's from a mature film as several songs have f-bombs, plus there's Death Metal. What PG-13 movie today would have Death Metal? Damn, the 90s were cool!
I have high hopes for the reboot. Hopefully it will be a hard "R", as I'm thinking they'll want to market it to the generation who grew up with the games and movies, who themselves are now adults.
Fingers crossed tho i'm not holding my breath considering every other reboot lately has ignored its fanbase just to try and get the newer generation and failed miserably and alienated the fans
First of all, the soundtrack is legendary, especially kmfdm's Sister Salvation song. Second there were reports of the budget and productive being ultra cheap. Lambert apparently bought food for everyone with his own money. I think they're were a volume of other things that came out about this production over the years that should have been included.
KMFDM song's called Juke Joint Jezebel which is conveniently on the same album as Ultra which was used in the animated Street Fighter II movie when Vega's fighting Chun Li
I agree I enjoyed the show his comments during the segment didn't add up since he admitted to never seeing the series and only mentioned negative reviews should've did better research during that part! 🤦♂️

10 things U didn't know: 1.) Liu Kang is a TOTAL STUD! Rrrraaaooowwwwrrr! 2.) Liu Kang fights Shang Tsung TOPLESS AT THE END! SO SEXY! But, in the SQUEAL once Liu Kang FINALLY gets his ANIMALITY and his shirt rips off, he's NEVER TOPLESS AGAIN! SO DISAPPOINTING! 3.) this film came out when I was in high school 4.) I've watched this film so many times! 5.) The soundtrack is AWESOME! 6.) The sequel has different music, including a song by Scooter "Fire", from Germany which was actually more known for Happy Hard Core Techno at the time, which has guitar riffs, and totally influenced the music of the TV Show. 7.) I actually used to watch the old TV Show based on the film/universe. It was usually on late at night, and all of my high school & college friends watched it. UNFORTUNATELY NO ONE GETS TOPLESS & NAKED in the TV Show like the film! 8.) The 3D animation & VFX in the film look like they were done in 3D Studio Max and Adobe After Effects (the old school versions) 9.) If there's any more films like this in the future the TOPLESS NAKED MAN FLESH IS SO TOTALLY A MUST! 10.) I want to see more naked dudes fighting! THE END
In the film's official magazine, it is stated that Shang wanted to make Sonya his queen once Earthrealm was conquered, revealing that he was in love with her after all.
I think having no massive superstars is what makes it so great. I ended up buying a mortal kombat series and swapping the tapes! Genius 10 year old
Kano was English in the movie, the accent was pure London, Goddard was English but had moved to Australia, the average American can’t tell the difference and any Aussie knows the accent isn’t Australian but keeps quiet so they can claim the character as their own.
When the second MK movie came out, I met Robin Shou & Talisa Soto at a video store convention. To this day, I still say that Talisa is the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen in real life. I instantly fell in love with her.

So glad they decided to keep the Reptile scene. As cheesy as the CGI was, the fight scene was awesome, especially paired with that music. The Scorpion/Cage scene was cool too, with the Fear Factory song.
