Raul Julia (RIP) as M. Bison gave one of his best villian lines ever for this film. " The day that bison graced your village was the most traumatic thing in your life, but for me it was a Tuesday."
The real reason why the filmmakers made both this movie and Mortal Kombat PG-13 so they can make more money. But an R-rated version would be better, Ryu originally kills Vega by knocking his claws off (instead of laying down on the floor, they stand up) and then Ryu uses a Tatsu to knock him away and he lands on his claws like the spike-pit from MK.
Fully agree, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie was the first Anime I ever watched. Being a fan of the video games, it gave me everything I could possibly want in a movie adaptation.
@@JB0071051982 As an anime fan, this movie and the TV series Street fighter II: V was the best this franchise got. Street Fighter Alpha got released afterward. I really loved the movie and all but, hated that there was just some no name villain as the bad guy. The story should have focused on Akuma. Otherwise I thought it was an excellent film. Hollywood will never get this sort of thing right. Things haven't really changed in all these years. Hollywood just doesn't really take video game based films seriously and they never get the love and attention they deserve.
I was born in '81, I grew up on Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat. I still have yet to see this movie, but I loved the original Mortal Kombat movie. The anime SF2 movie I have seen was amazing. The Chun-Li vs Vega fight with KMFDM - Ultra song in the background.... perfect.
The Street Fighter animated movie rocks and most of the fights were great, with only one or two that should have been longer. This movie on the other hand has its own charm to it that has only grown on people over the years. Yes, it is a bad movie, but it’s so bad it’s good kind of way. Go in, shut your brain off and enjoy it for what it is and you will be quoting the movie by the time it’s finished.
The movie came out about 5 years after I got out of the USMC. It was a fun film. Not to mention it had Kylie Minogue, who everyone was in love with, and the gorgeous Ming-Na Wen. It also had my boy Peter "Navy" Tuiasosopo, who played E. Honda. Peter was an undrafted Rookie Free Agent signing for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987. He played Center for the LA Rams during the strike in '87. His cousin Manu Tuiasosopo was a Defensive Tackle for the Seahawks and 49ers. Manu's son Marques was an NFL Quarterback for the Raiders and Jets. His cousins Terry Tautolo and John Tautolo also played in the NFL. Quite the pedigree. You will have seen Navy in many things, including as the Janitor in the Disney series Kickin' It!
I haven't heard that name in a long time. I went to basic training in 1985 and one of the guys in my platoon was a Tuiasosopo. I remember him telling me that his brother/s played football. He also said that he was the smallest one of his brothers, which made us all laugh.
@Ldunk I remember Him when he came with his family to a Mulligans golf/arcade where I used to work. I was actually playing Street Fighter The Movie game and they came to see the game and one kid that was with him said, "Dad, that's you" I looked over my shoulder and we met. He used to come over often and I took a Pog of E. Honda and he signed it for me. Super Nice Guy.
Genuenly surprised you haven't done this one yet. Thank you! We need more JCVD movies on the channel, as most of his clips on RU-vid have HUGE numbers. Here's some suggestions: Cyborg (1989) Lionheart (1990) Death Warrant (1990) Double Impact (1991) Hard Target (1993) Sudden Death (1995) The Quest (1996) Legionnaire (1998) Knock Off (1998) Double Team (1997)
Another awesome video. I still remember getting the game on the Super Nintendo. I thought it had a fault on it as M Bison was named Balrog and vice versa. Years later I found out that Balrog was initially called M Bison as a direct reference to Mike Tyson due to his huge fan base in Japan. When the game went on global release they changed it thinking Tyson would take them to court either to sue them or demand royalties
I love the SF The Movie arcade game! I wish they'd release it one day but that's highly unlikely. I had no idea there was an original R rated cut. Imagine if that ever saw the light of day.
@@batboy9997 You are 90% right. Bison did not look like Bison and Vega was very weak he was easily defeated. With Legend of Chun-li they were going off the games. They forget about the 2 animated series and movies. They could have used them as well. Chun-li is better in this movie and she went to voice Mulan.
Hey, Minti. Thanks for covering this film. Although criticized and very underrated, it is my childhood and has tons of nostalgia elements for me. I absolutely love it.
I remember at the time Lion King was out and our teacher wanted to do a play based on the movie so my parents dropped me and my friends off at the theater, we snuck in to Street Fighter. The Mortal Kombat Trailer also played before the movie.
I saw this in a double feature with The Jungle Book (1994). I went in expected to be bored to pieces with The Jungle Book and love Street Fighter. I came out 3 hours later feeling the exact opposite. I was shocked.
Always thought this was a fun popcorn flick definitely gonna add to my collection! Don't know what anyone else was expecting from a video game based movie, but it is what it is😊
And to be honest, this is not the worst movie to bear the Street Fighter name, as at least this somewhat keeps the characters close to the source material. If you want the worst SF movie, it's goes by the subtitle The Legend of Chun-Li.
I remember watching this in the cinema (I was 10) and thinking it looked more like a silly action film with people pretending to be the characters from the games, rather than a decent interpretation of the game itself. This and Super Mario Bros clued me in that movies based on games were probably not going to land so well. At least that's not always true. But I'll give SF this, it has plenty of fun moments (quick, change the channel!) and Raul Julia's performance transcends commentary.
@@darkwingdave79 Me too. I was so looking forward to it. Even then I felt it's biggest problems were a boring, all-over-the-place story, some miscasting, and an overall cheap feel. It felt less like a movie and more like Power Rangers.
with how much a joy it was to watch julia chew ALL the scenery as bison ... it was clear he knew wasnt going to live much longer and so just went balls deep into the silliness of the movie
Wow, dude! You're on a roll with these? Great job with these videos though! Especially this one concerning the live action Street Fighter movie! Very in depth and informative!
Xenozoic Tales is a comic by Mark Schultz that was the basis of Capcom's videogame Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. It was sort of a tie-in. for the Animated series released the same year, but in reality the game was more in tune with the comics than the cartoon.
Great video as always, Minty! Bonus 11th thing: Capcom released a Street Fighter The Movie game with the mechanics of Street Fighter 2 but motion captured graphics more in line with the movie. It was released in arcades and on Playstation. It also featured a live action version of fan favorite character Akuma (not in the actual movie) who was played in the game by Ernie Reyes Sr.
I grew up with this film and went to see it in the theater as a kid. While I was confused about it, I still enjoyed it! I've since bought the VHS, DVD and recently the Steelbook Bluray with the Bison dollar! Still love is so much for its over the top crazy charm! It's like a GI Joe movie ahead of its time! Always enjoy your content Minty! Keep it up! 😎🤘
Keep being you. Minty you’re one of the best. I hope to one day come to Australia. My all time favorite show was filmed there. FARSCAPE. Keep up the great work. I will continue to watch every video you put out.
Thank you for your video. I think the genres are both just very different, but appear deceptively similar. If you think about it, how many times has there been a bad video game adaptation of a movie? ...and OH they've tried since TRON, many more times in that direction, because it was cheaper and potentially more profitable I imagine. What percentage of those attempts were good? Eh... I don't think this is a terrible movie. It's a niche action movie for kids and teenagers, or fans of the game/actors/etc., and it has a couple of good performances and a more or less 'plot'. If we think about it more deeply, books and movies lend themselves to adaptations because while like video games, they DO revolve around good characters, the two former rely on good storytelling to be good. Good/fun video games rely on good characters, sometimes, but the 'interactive' element is what makes them good... and as obscure as that can initially sound, go back to the beginning and think how fun Donkey Kong the movie would be? Pac Man the movie? Video games started by focusing on the interactive elements and adding repetitive increasingly difficult challenges to the player (oversimplification, but basically). Do that in a movie, and they're adding repetitive increasingly inconceivable challenges to the protagonist, and it becomes tedious, more intangible, and boring or too over the top to tell a realistic story. We want an element of realism in our movies and books, but not in our video games. Hence, there's a reason the crossover between those two genre seldom works.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. Street Fighter II is my favorite game of all time. Countless quarters and hours, then more hours on the SNES ports. I won three local tournaments back in the day when we actually had an arcade. I was 12 when the game came out, so I was in the age demographic for the movie release. It's one of the only times I actually paid for a pay per view so I could tape the movie. I remember not being blown away by the movie, but even at that age, I understood bringing a game to a film and I thought they got the spirit of it enough while trying to squeeze in some kind of story. RIP Raul Julia. He played a megalomaniac so well. I was saddened when I learned he had passed and the details later on involving the movie. He did it for his kids while he still could, what a gentleman. I still watch the movie from time to time and still play Street Fighter II on my SNES through a real CRT TV. I am a retro gamer, so it fits. Cheers to everyone that has ever popped a quarter in, or waited around for the local players to show them a move so you could jot it on paper and carry with you at all times. We didn't have move lists back then.
Raul Julia was a surprisingly good Bison. When I heard it was coming out, I worried, being as I saw him as great in Addams Family but just didn't have the bulk. After seeing it though, he's my favorite part of the movie. Until Mortal Kombat 1, it felt like any game or cartoon movie kinda sucked to really sucked. Never knew about the sequels though! Chun Li might sound familiar, but never heard of the others! I remember really wanting a Lou Ferigno Blanka and some Dal Siim(sp?) characters too, and Guile's hair.
You just cannot beat this cast.; Raul Julia, Ming Na-wen and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Raul Julia, GREAT ACTOR, R.I.P. Also I must say that Byron Mann has matured into a very good actor. He delivers lines with quite a bit of poise. Last word: I would like to see Ming Na-wen in more action rolls in front of the camera.
Minty loved this "10 Things You didn't know." I love this movie and one of my favorite Van Damn movies. Minty did you do a "10 things you didn't know" about the Van Damn movie "The Quest"?
This movie is a part of my childhood. If anyone is watching this that has not seen the Street Fighter 2 animated movie or the live action Assassin's Fist, you really need to check them out.
I remmeber when I was about 8 years old, I was at the cinema with my family. NO idea what we were there to see, but I remember seeing a huge poster for Street Fighter: The Movie. I was just blown away! What a time to be alive 😅
Not sure about elsewhere in the world, but I do remember that most of the promotional stuff dealing with the Street Fighter francise at the time focused heavily on Guile and/or Chung Li. They were pretty much the public faces of the franchise over here. Perhaps it's what was cut from the movie to pair down the rating... Or just that it was a rushed project. Or both... And yeah, it's a cheesy mostly B movie, but some of that is intentional. What I've always loved is the part with them bracing for the impact of the truck, and Zangeif shouting "Change the channel!". The look the others give him is just priceless.
The day Minty graced your phone with a "10 Things About Street Fighter" video was the most important day of you life. But for him, it was Tuesday (or Thursday).
I remember going to the theater on a saturday morning and I saw that Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li (I am a huge Street Figher II fan) was there and decided to watch Knowing with Nicholas Cage because I had seen Dragon Ball Evolution and knew it was going to suck bad.
I’m no writer but, I think it would’ve been better if the movie followed Ryu and Ken’s journey as they traveled around the world fighting in tournaments to prove who’s best of the best. Build up the other characters as legends or myths throughout.
