Hey guys Minty here, just wanted to address an issue I’m seeing in the comment section, I’m noticing some people are offended because I did a video on Outbreak at a time when the world is experiencing a pandemic and that its bad timing, some have said they are unsubscribing, some even resulted to name calling. Firstly I’m sorry if this video offended you, it was never my intention to cause harm of offense, when I make a video it’s always my intention to entertain and educate, never cause harm or distress. Secondly if you look at RU-vid at the moment nearly every RU-vidr and their pet parrot are making videos on Corona, from comedy channels, to discussion ones, to news stations and current affairs, heck I’ve even seen a Corona Virus themed ASMR video. I think sometimes when times are crazy and people are scared it helps them to talk about it and throw the issue on the table, I think that’s a coping mechanism that’s always been within the human race. Thirdly the fact of the matter is I’m not talking about Corona, I never actually mention the name once in this video, this is first and foremost a video about a Movie, and I made this episode from the perspective of “Isn’t it crazy and scary what’s going on at the moment? Well here’s a movie from 25 years ago sort of similar what’s going on now, let’s look into it because it’ll be topical” I actually made this video to also see how fiction predicted reality to see if Outbreak is anything like our current situation and while making this episode and learning more about Outbreak while I was making it, I felt it was more fiction than anything else hence why I said at the end it’s the work of fiction. So yea this is why I made the episode, because I just wanted to explore a movie that’s kind of relevant of our times just because it’s a relevant topic of the moment. Maybe for future I shouldn’t talk about movies that are a bit sensitive of current times and issues, I don’t know, it’s all a learning curve and I don’t quite know what the rules are. Feel free to comment your thoughts below. Stay fresh and be happy peeps Minty.
For what it's worth Minty, I am not offended. Continue making your great videos about all my favorite movies. It looks like a lot of us on this globe may have some free video watching time that needs to be filled while we hope and pray for all those who have become afflicted.
I for one, support this decision, I made the same movie suggestion to other channels. Sure it brings uneases to the situation in question but by that same token a lot more people will be aware on how things can get out of hand. I mean come on, we got a bunch of inconsiderate knuckleheads carrying on and socializing in bars. Clearly people aren’t as educated as they should be. Plus, someone will always be talking so stay fresh Minty.
I had the good fortune of working on this movie. My two best memories were when Dustin Hoffman showed up on set one morning wearing his army fatigues and froofy bunny slippers. He was ALWAYS entertaining everyone like that. Silly stuff that got everybody laughing. And Cuba Gooding Junior was absolutely great with the kid actors making up games to play and showing them unbelievable break dance moves. Just a really fun film to work on because of those two guys. No big egos, just really good people.
I was the Production Designer on OUTBREAK, fun seeing it discussed. We did beat Crisis in the Hot Zone by racing into production without a finished script. Got it done though, and it made a lot of money for Warners
Proof that Minty listens and understands his people! Been suggesting this in the comments section for the past 2-3 videos. Relevant by today's events and it just became 25 years old.
Wow, what range Betsy has, great casting, great acting! Just lover her. She is scary in Outbreak, funny in Pet Detective.... she needs an award for best supporting actress.
Top movie with a stellar cast and a intense sci-fi drama thriller story. I rented this when it was first released which now I own. I remember this line by Dustin Hoffman If one of them have it then ten of them will have it. Something like that.
If one of them have it then ten of them will have it and if one of them leave Cedar Creek then we're in deep fucking shit... we're already in deep fucking shit!
I have fond memories of my first time seeing this in the onboard cinema of a ferry while crossing from Ireland to the UK. The Irish Sea was a bit rough as it often is and the seating arrangement was at 90° to the ships direction. People had been dropping out of the room with seasickness during the entire movie, then the helicopter chase scene drove most of the rest outside to part with their dinners.
Outbreak terrified me when I first watched when it came out on VHS my dad rented it and we sat down together on a family movie night. Oh and I'm glad to know that this toilet paper frenzy is not just a problem where I live at in the USA but over there in your country too . But at least you have a good sense of humor about it and we can all have a good laugh in this chaotic cov19 outbreak thing. Thank u minty for sharing this.
Minty, you never cease to amaze me, first off your professional programming your Insightful views on subject matter and your opinions about said matters of to which, I couldn't agree with you more. Your work is a true beacon to all younger enthusiast and hopeful journalist to come,... You my friend are a teacher, and a scholar in my book. Thank you Sir, and keep up the good work. Sincerely Marco Tulio Hernández, creator of "Brack and Brock" comics Hereford Tx U.S.A..
Thank you minty. I lived there atvthe time this was made. It was a trip working at the local truck stop and seeing all the car carriers with the police cars and other emergency vehicles come for fuel. I only watched the movie a few years ago for the first time as I was married in Ferdale and wanted to see the sites displayed. If you ever get that way, the theatre is real and puts out amazing live plays. Guy Fier just bought the meat company. I think you did a brilliant job on the review during our current crisis. Thank you.
Don’t worry Minty, I still love you! Oh and that toilet paper auction was hilarious. Thanks for working hard to help us keep our minds of the harsh realities going on around us. Keep up the good work.
During my 14 years in the military my MOS was NBC/WMD. This could have been the nightmare we had to deal with. By the way Minty, Im in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Sioux city is in Iowa.
Hi Minty. My name is David and I am a fairly recent subscriber to your channel. I am also a Corona Virus survivor having contracted the disease in 2020 which nearly cost me my life. I wish to go on record as saying I absolutely love this video and all the others I've watched since first discovering your channel. Having seen your video about the craziest minty moments of 2020 and seeing that in the top slot how you were abused by the video I say this. While there may be some people of a sensitive nature or people whose lives have been seriously affected by this awful pandemic this is entertainment. Not just that entertainment at it's finest. It's people like you that have (apart from a small minority) kept the population not just of Australia, but THE WORLD going. Seriously, keep up the great work and I truly hope you receive no more abuse. God bless you Minty.
Funny (true) story: I remember watching Outbreak when it came out in the theater. During the scene in the movie theater where it shows the virus spreading among the moviegoers, I actually started feeling really sick. I remember thinking, "Damn, this movie is really getting to me--I can't believe how sick I feel! Didn't know my imagination could work so vividly!" I was diagnosed the next day with strep throat. 😆
'The Hot Zone' was shown on the National Geographic channel here in South Africa. Both my wife and me watched it and enjoyed it. It is based on the incident you spoke about in the beginning of your video where an outbreak happened at a testing facility in the USA. I really would recommend it. Although good it is not nearly as good as 'Chernobyl' though.
Yea, after sanitizer started flying off they started say all u need is soap and water and wash ur hands. so now bar soap has slowly started selling in place of sanitizer any.
Actually Minty, Sioux City is three separate cities in three states that share a border in the United States. Sioux City, Iowa, North Sioux City, South Dakota and South Sioux City, Nebraska. It's the same for Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. I actually used to live in Sioux City, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri. And not to nit pic, but it's pronounced Sue City. It's namesake is from the Sioux Nation of native Americans.
Minty, love your videos and your sense of humor and passion has got me through some rough nights when I needed a laugh and to see someone with passion in the world. All that aside, your note responding to peeps who have a problem with the timing of the Outbreak video is very classy and utterly unnecessary. You can put what you want on your channel. And there is a lot of resurgent interest in this film now. Here in the US, the film is in the Top 10 most viewed films on Netflix. You were right not to say anything about Coronavirus just to avoid upsetting some peeps and shows how you approached doing the video with sensitivity and professionalism. I applaud you and continue to be a fan. Stay safe and well over there and know your videos are even more important now than ever as we all look for some relief from this global shitstorm. Oh and don’t take it personally some peeps unfollowed you- they most likely don’t have time to watch anymore as they’re busy buying up all the toilet rolls and water because they’re that sensitive. Peace!
Very timely. I personally think one of the advantages of fiction -- film, books, whatever - is they allow us to explore topics that make you think and ask questions in a relatively safe setting, being fictional. Also, I think during a time of crisis people want to see a struggle and ultimately (hopefully) a victory over the thing they fear, be it a wartime enemy or a virus or whatever. Since we can't all be biologists a lot of us don't feel like we can do much about fighting this, and so it is reassuring to see that fight play out through characters we can watch or read about. What is astounding to me is the amount of fiction that deals with outbreaks, from The Andromeda Strain to Outbreak to one episode of the X-Files I remember from the 90's where a character says to the gov't "you can't protect the public by lying to them!". Perhaps the topic is used so often because it is something we fear as a species -- or perhaps because the topic also embodies issues like the risk of government abuse, conflict between public knowledge vs security, civil rights vs. control, etc. all issues important to us. Whatever the reason, I remember this movie from back in the day and glad you are talking about it now. Thank you!
Biological warfare has always been the method of war that we really just shove to the back of our minds and never had a contingency plan to even prepare for. Hell, even nuclear warfare, we have fallout shelters that give us SOME hope, and sense of feeling prepared. I vividly recall in high school our teacher explained the different types of warfare. Conventional, guerilla, terrorism(kinda hand in hand with with guerilla) cyber warfare, nuclear warfare, and biological warfare(and I'm sure there's more I've forgotten or just was never even aware of) I asked the teacher 'so what do we do to stop biological warfare, or at least prepare for it?' Teacher: Ehh, there really ISN'T any plans for it, but thankfully we don't really have to worry about since no governments are crazy enough to risk contaminating their own nation for an attack. Never felt like a good response and HERE WE ARE TODAY.... And hell, we can't even all agree on calling a spade a fucking spade and identifying the obviousness of what's gone on with corona.
PERFECT TIMING MINTY! Nice Job! I loved the toilet paper comment & bidding war at the end, it's so hard to find any right now and it REALLY won't do anything for you!
Great review Minty. I’ll have to finally check out Outbreak, but I would suggest another one which IS a masterpiece: CONTAGION....wow! That’s a good one, especially right now. We just rewatched it a few nights ago and it’s eerily familiar to what’s going on right now....Contagion not only explores a very realistic viral outbreak, but also the many other coincidental manifestations that come with it.
Outbreak was the very first R-rated movie my parents let me watch by myself so many times and it became one of my favorite movies when my parents let me watch it during my high school years! Also through the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, I have been binge watching Outbreak on Netflix!
I loved the miniseries, too. I also read the book and it scared the life out of me! Nothing makes my germ OCD's worse than a good old-fashioned book about viruses. 😄😷
It's absolutely bizarre the way things are right now and it's interesting to see how movies who had medical consultants like this one! Thanks, Minty, this really piqued my interest!
I feel like this is great timing to talk about this issue and the movie is great , don't worry about the haters. Thanks for entertaining me while being stuck at home.
The Andromeda Strain is still one my favorite TV Movies in this genre. But I remember watching Outbreak, over and over again thanks to my buddy's mom letting him have a VCR in his bedroom. I devoted/lost several hours to Encinoman and Terminator 2 as well! God Bless The '90s!
Great video as usual minty! Me and the wife actually watched it last night because it seemed it appropriate for the times. Best wishes to you and the fam. Take care 👉🤟
When I read the book 20 years ago, yeah, that cave scared the shit out of me (among many other things) but now the new scare are Wet Markets lol. Ok, Minty. Now do Contagion! Lol
Well Minty, covid-19 has made me watch a few pandemic documentaries on prime that I can't remember the name of. AND, I want to see Outbreak AGAIN for the umpteenth time. So I'm glad you posted this, rock on!
My mother was in the medical field and enjoyed the book Hot Zone (I tried reading it but was bored to death immediately by all the technical stuff), she loved Outbreak. So I don't know who exactly is trying to beat up the movie. There's a lot of medical fact in the film. And it's based on a real virus, all they changed was perhaps its virulence. But that's debatable. The latest Ebola outbreak killed 5 people for every 10,000 across the 3 countries (over 11,000 reported deaths). It had a mortality rate near 50%. Currently after 3 months, the global death toll of Coronavirus is under 8,000. If America got that strain as bad, we'd have more than 150,000 dead. Shit's no joke.
Shout out to ferndale, I live like 6 miles away from there and the town was also used in a couple scenes for joe dirt which I think I awesome..so props to minty for giving us a mention aswell..I liked this episode and look forward to more minty freshness lol..keep up the good work my friend!!
I started selling on EBay in about December of 2019. I started selling various item including new sealed DVD. I quickly learned that no one was buying DVDs anymore. Last week I sold my first DVD Out Break.
Wait till the electric grid starts going down, and it takes days or weeks to repair due to labor shortages. Those of us with off-grid setups, and physical media will not be bored like those who only have streaming. The electrical grid is vulnerable but not as vulnerable as the civilian internet.
David James That's why I have nearly 2 terabytes of movies on my various computers, plus hundreds of dvds and blu rays. I said they were obsolete but I still have them just in case. It's doubtful they'll let the electric grid go down though, just a few days of that and society would totally collapse. Those utilities can function fairly easily with social distancing, certain occupations are pretty safe due to their infrastructure importance. Barring some other disaster happening in the middle of all this we're pretty safe in that regard. There's no reason to try to cause a panic by saying something like that either. That kinda talk doesn't help a damn thing, so chill out. It's when people panic when the shit really hits the fan and anyone that incites it is an asshole. It's good to prepare people for the worst, but be careful how you phrase things unless you have inside knowledge of its inevitability. Nothing is inevitable yet! Hope is infinitely more productive than despair in times like this.
Well Minty, I'm not offended. I always thought the concept of taking offense to be quite ridiculous actually. I feel people just taking everything too personally, and try to find ways to take away peoples right to speak their minds. I clicked on this vid because of the fact it's about a movie about a virus outbreak that I've enjoyed for years. It's relevant to what's going on now. And I think you're right, discussing a movie about a similar topic that is fictional helps us to look headlong into a serious situation. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I don't care. I love this channel. I watch it all the time and I appreciate your efforts and hard work to digging up interesting facts about all sorts of movies. Other just need to lighten up. Keep doing what you do, don't let others push you around just because they don't like something. Besides I've notice the likes (I gave one) far exceeds the dislikes. By quite a lot a bit. :) Keep up the good work.
You twisted bastard. I laughed out loud when I saw this in my feed. Love it. P.S. Everyone, do your part and stay safe out there, er at home. P.P.S. my first instinct was to watch "The Stand"...which you can find free somewhere on RU-vid, if only in parts. Exposure therapy is a thing.
Oh civilians. A correction for you: Donald Sutherland played a Major General (2 stars), not a Major (gold oak leaf). Apologies, that just bothers my prior-service US Army self. :P
Many people & service members say "general" but imply Major Gen or Lt General. It's not like people pass out or flip if someone calls them general. I'm a US Army veteran, enlisted 4yr.
Nice review. I love this movie. I went to the theater and got the vhs when it came out. What is so great about it is Dustin Hoffman's acting. Just increadable. So enjoyable. But there is one actors perfomance in this move that is so outstanding even though he wasn't even in the credits. The Late JT Walsh. He was in one scene as the Chief of Staff. It is a scene so good. That it not only blew me away when I first saw the film. Its was the biggest reason I wanted the VHS. Just so I could watch that scene over and over. Its just a stelar performance. Now i want to go find a blurey copy of it.
I'm selling slightly used but still in good condition toilet paper. Water never touched it, so the original consistency, thickness and texture is fully retained, not like some cheap microwave-dried copies my competitors selling on e-Bay with corn still stuck in them.
Omg! Was totally laughing at your toilet paper auction minty😆. I almost watched outbreak tonight. People need to chill out with what's going on right now. I work at a small grocery store in my area and it's been so crazy. People buying massive cans of soup ramen noodles and many other things. We had limit what they can buy for a meat product too. And one case of water and one cleaning supply and pack of toilet paper and paper towels and such. So many businesses my never come back cus of this. Minty thank for lighting up my day with this. Stay safe down under mate.
Hi Minty came across your channel a few weeks ago and it's brilliant. I live in Melbourne too and so fully understand the pain on lockdown and the irony of this movie. When this all hit the fan in early 2020 I was telling everyone this reminds me of the movie Outbreak. The fact people got offended with you is no surprise.....this world is full of people offended at everything which packs a punch of reality which they can't handle. Keep up the good work! P.s. I'm a big Beatles fan and always enjoy seeing the Yellow Submarine album in the background... you should do 10things for that 😉
Outbreak was one of my friends favorite movie and part of the reason she went to medical school. LOL Thank you for the laugh at the end. It's like I Always tell people, IT'S A RESPIRATORY VIRUS NOT A SHIT OUT YOUR INSIDES VIRUS. I don't get why people are stock piling on toilet paper? It's not gonna save them!
People are afraid that we’ll have to be quarantined in our homes for an extended period of time. If stores were to close for some reason, and we were under mandatory lockdown, things like toilet paper could quickly become quite important.
Keep up the good work Minty. I really enjoy your videos. If people don’t like them for what ever reason , then they need to just not watch them, it’s that simple.
I got off the ovation of the sea Caribbean cruise ship in Sydney six weeks ago and the CoronaCrap completely missed me and the missis and surprisingly the entire ship thank God!!!!! Having said that🤔I did however succumb to another type of Corona sickness a few times but this one came with lemon or lime ! 👌🏻😁
@@blackbird7781 well I suppose it's not strictly a review but at the end of each one of these he gives his thoughts and overall opinion on the film. Essentially it's a top 10 with a mini review.
I love how people enjoy being sanctimonious when they are completely clueless. Being topical has nothing to do with courtesy or sensitivity. When a topic comes up in a conversation, people go off on related tangents ALL THE TIME without considering any type of courtesy! Sure, if someone has the time to do the research, they should have the luxury to consider sensitivity. But, IMO, that still makes the bitcher a hypocrite. TL:DR If you have the time and cajones to spread toilet paper memes on Facebook, you can't complain about someone bringing up a movie.
You sir have nothing to apologize for. Excellent work. I laugh more because of the hysteria from the present day made me recall this movie. Then I see you did a feature on it Goo work as always
Another great video ( _I swear you must have a window to my soul with the selections you make_ ) and truly relatable considering our current global climate. I don't know how far in advance you chose your films, but have you ever considered announcing your next video at the end of each vid ? It would be a great way to keep us salivating for more. 😁 Love your work Minty. Never stop. ❤
