Moving to Okinawa, Japan? Watch this first!

I had the best time living in Okinawa. I would agree the traffic on #58 (the only main road) can get pretty bad sometimes.

I’m really considering to move to Okinawa, my family is from Okinawa and most of my extended family live there. I’m from Hawaii and I think a new change in my life is what I need, as for living thankfully I’ll be staying in my grandmothers house in Nago since no one lives there, I think my only problem is finding a job.

I agree, the traffic in Okinawa is horrible, but I do not agree it is the worst in the world. A few places that stick out to me that have worse traffic is Panama, Naples Italy, and India. I concur the Okinawa humidity is horrible. Discerning from your base pictures, you worked on Kadena? I really liked that you gave five pros and five cons of living in Okinawa. Awesome video!

if wages are so low then why are real estate prices so high? other parts of japan, excluding tokyo, are fairly cheap. I find it hard to believe us govt service jobs are hard to get. I just looked and many pay 7-10 usd an hour. Those are poverty wages

The internet is INCREDIBLY fast. Well, it was when I was there in 2008, so I can't imagine it has slowed down at all. I had fiber internet, although I'm not sure what the speed was.

does okinawan language or their japanese dialect use politeness the same way as japanese?

Yes, typically there are about 3 different ways to deliver a statement in Japanese depending on how polite you want to be. In Okinawa, it is the same :) Okinawan dialect is different from Japanese, however.

Would you say the humidity is same year round, or its tolerable in "winter"? As im debating going down there on a visa for 6 months in winter. Im from Vancouver, BC, so im useto no humidity, (at max its 70% and 32C mid summer) having travelled to Maui and Phillipines, theres no way i could work labour in that kind of humidity.

While it is better in the "winter", the humidity will be more noticeable than Vancouver I imagine. It's hard to avoid lol. If you can tolerate it though, Okinawa is a unique and beautiful place that is certainly worth a visit. :)

I turned down a high paying job in Tokyo to move to Okinawa because of my wife and son. My wife doesn't know how much I hate living down here, I miss my friends in Tokyo and I had the opportunity to visit other prefectures as well but in Okinawa I feel trapped. I hate going to American village also, it's boring there. If I bring up this issue with my wife, she gets emotional and starts crying because she doesn't want to move. It has gotten to the point were I rather keep it all inside. As a matter of fact, I have been depressed for the past two years living in Okinawa, I am just waiting to grow old and die.

I’m sorry to hear that, but I guess there’s just some lack of understanding from her. It is pretty clear that you’re forcing yourself living there in Okinawa and you wanna go back to Tokyo. Hopefully you’ll find a way out and you’ll be able to live happily with your family too. Wish you the best

The food is the best???? Friend, you must be American... because that foodcsucks... I am from Spain, one of the healthiest food nation. And I had difficult times when I was there with my Karate Team. But I love the honour of the okinawaneses. Good people.

And yet, Japan has the largest centenarian population in the world and the lowest rate of chronic disease sufferers. Also, in many lists of countries ranking the healthiness of diets and foods, Japan usually sits in the top 4 of those lists, but Spain goes up and down depending on the lists. I think your claim reeks superfluous arrogance and unwarranted condescension. Speak humbly. Not everybody on the internet is an idiot.

Thank you for the info. We here in Hawaii have many Uchinanchu roots. However let's not encourage bad people like Kenneth Franklin Gadson who murdered a local young woman Rina Shimabukuro & other bad military men who hurt our indigenous people. it's tough enough that Uchinanchu have to struggle against the central govt. of Japan who threatens the people about the US bases that take up much of the island. & Henoko .
