Moving to Jakarta Indonesia, I had no expectations or idea of the challenges it would present. If this is your first time visiting Jakarta these are the 10 things you should know about Jakarta Indonesia. I had spent a month living there and learned so much about life in the city. Everything from the transportation, people, food and costs.

The reason why indonesians always pay attention when there are tourists around them 1. The Indonesian wants to know, 2. Interested in tourists, 3. Want to make your acquaintance, 4. Photo, 5. Wants a chat, 6. Especially with tourists making vlogs, and more I'm Indonesian and I like your content...😀😀🙏👍👍

They find you are handsome/pretty/ attractive and often they hope can take picture of you / with you. 3. The point when you're talking about people stares at you while vlogging or passing through the place, that's pretty common thing on some Indonesian people do tbh. If you're checking out other RU-vid traveller video, well some of them ask them for just taking a pictures, maybe because they found out that the foreigner or tourists (aka we called it with "Bule") found it as attractive. Everything is pricer, more jam, etc., but one thing that compensates for all that is the people of Indonesia being extra friendly like no other country I have been to. Also, safety here is top-notch, so excellent for the kids, at least compared to other Asian countries. You can also get rid of all the negatives of Jakarta by living in the suburbs of the city.

Jakartans always look curious to the foreigner? Not really, they only think: "Hey, what can I do for that foreigner, does he need help or something?" Or maybe they just thinking for: "Can I practice my *beginner level* english to that foreigner?". Don't be too worry when you in Jakarta, just say "Hi" to anyone that put their eyes on you, and have fun then.

I like some of your points; but regarding photos and getting asked for photos, that's part of the Indonesian curiosity for foreigners. Indonesians love to take photos - hello selfies - and from the time I first went to Indonesia - Padang at age 17 - I was always being asked for my photo, even by total strangers; same when I was on an exchange program in Malang at age 19, and even when i was old in Jakarta. As for Jakarta not getting many tourists compared to Bali, well, of course, always been the case, but Jakartans may in fact be more hospitable and welcoming than some other places where people are jaded by tourists and their antics. On language, try learning a few words that willl make a difference to the people you meet - thank you, how are you, tastes good, etc - Indonesians will be delighted, "eh, sudah bisa bahasa Indonesia dia!". I once interviewed a brilliant gamelan player from the US who has lived in Indonesia for 30 years; she said "foreigners are like movie stars" for many Indonesians. Just be gracious and take it as part of the expdereince. Agree about the lack of walking spaces, but it's sure much better than 30 years ago. You have Mega Kuningan, for one, and Menteng - well planned by the Dutch, for the Dutch1 - has some great areas.

For good and bad, Indonesians are openly curious people and like getting involved in someone else’s business. The good part, Indonesians are quick to accept anything/anyone new because of our curiosity and ready to help whenever you’re in trouble. The bad part, lacking awareness of privacy of others. Anyway, just think of it as receiving celebrities’ treatment!

I think your perception is right about why people are looking at you in Jakarta. Jakarta is very different than Bali, we don't have that much tourists at all and foreigners who live here are not really seen out and about on the street. So a caucasian person would 'stand out' in the crowd here and naturally people will look. People might also see you like you are some kind of celebrity lol. Anyway, this is simply because people here in Jakarta aren't as accustomed to seeing foreign people as the people in Bali where it's a part of their day to days.

based on my expat teacher's experiences, local indonesian are attracted to foreigners especially if they are vlogging. its bcuz there are few expats vlogger or even local vlogger here. but i think, most of them are just curious with it or it is unusual for people to talk to camera.

When I first visited Jakarta in 1982, I was shocked by kids on d streets, selling items to stagnant vehicles in traffic, was kind of sad, wonder if they r still around. But in Mumbai, from 2009 to 2011, I was even more shocked, in d first year, I didn't have d budget to rent a car, n my mode of transportation was auto rickshaw, n when it stops at a traffic lights, those beggars, kids mostly, will start harassing u, n in one silly incident, two kids took my drinking water n umbrella, but there was a kid, selling things, took d umbrella back from d other kid n return it to me. Big cities in developing countries. In Malaysia, esp in d capital, KL, there r few areas with homeless n beggars, but u definitely won't see any kids selling stuff on d street in any city. Plenty of street food though. 😁🇲🇾😁

Jakarta is open to all lifestyle possibilities. And Jakarta is one of the best places for newcomers to try their luck in doing business. That is very well known to foreign businessmen, especially Chinese people. Jakartans love new things. Open your food stall or restaurant. Bring your "halal" traditional food, star food of your lovely country here. Make it in spicy here. Indonesian, love spicy food. Or open a fashionable traditional clothes store, typical of your country, then the queue will occur soon. My suggestion is to open it in South Jakarta. I have several times started a business in South Jakarta. It's relatively straightforward. And an advantage if you are a "foreigner" who is friendly, likes to mingle, joke, laugh. You will very easily live and doing business in Jakarta. A city of a million jokes and possibilities. The warmth of family and laughter are the hallmarks of native Jakarta residents. Don't get too serious about enjoying Jakarta. Be relaxed. Enjoy all the experiences. That's the way to enjoy Jakarta. Money is not the main thing for those who want to live in Jakarta. But his attitude and ability to interact warmly with the peoples. The more familiar you are with the local people, you will get many benefits. Don't live in tall buildings. Stay in a boarding house in the middle of the Jakarta village to understand Jakarta better. You can touch Jakarta's upper social class when you have fame, achievement, or acquaintance who brings you there. "Bule" or Westerners have a long history in Indonesia, especially Jakarta. They used to be high-class citizens here. So the subconscious formation of most Indonesians thinks they have an interesting charm. It was considered that all foreigners were rich and / or could make life comfortable as the upper class in colonial era Indonesian society. The desire to be close to the "upper class" (Bule) exacerbated also by the formation of the main media, electronic cinema (sinetron) which depicted that if you mary with foreign couple specially western, you ll ve mixed Indonesian descendants who ll be more good loking; handsome, beautiful. It ll make your childs could be success in the future. So when a stranger walks by there is some kind of psychological attraction that makes us want to at least see and / or say hello. Just saying hi and then a good response is enough to make most of us happy. We have a Capital City which has the potential to become one of the best Capital Cities in the World because of our egalitarian (open for new comers) attitude. We love the arrival of strangers. As long as they are kind, friendly, polite, ethical, obeying rules and of course not easily offended. "Selamat Datang di Jakarta."

If there's one thing I'd like the world to know about Jakarta, is that our public transportation not that bad. We're improving, approaching our gap to Bangkok and KL. When the LRT lauch next year, it would be even better. Yes, the only thing I hope an immediate improve is the languange barrier and add more proper direction boards. Thank you for this video, man. Expats are very common in several business districts, high end areas & places of interest. But they are extremely rare in most of Jakarta neighborhoods, that's why you got much more attention in some places than the others. If you walk around in Central or South Jakarta the folks will definitely give you less attention because most expats are concentrated there, hence the friendlier pedestrian facilities that you mentioned.

Try to go around Jakarta by spending only Rp. 3,500, using Transjakarta buses, prepare some e-money card, hop on hop off in the transit stations, avoid peak hours (before 9 am after 4 pm) are the less crowded passengers, bring some snacks & drink but avoid consume it in the buses, maybe you can finish it in 1 to 3 days, You can try the trains too to go until Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Cikarang, or just hop on hop off in the transit stations and back to your start point, Visit the Chinatown, area surrounding big universities, little streets / alleys behind/surrounding office buildings, or follow the employees during lunch, if you looking for foods options, or maybe you'll find some new friends considering usually they speak English more fluently, You'll get starred wherever you go in Jakarta, it's normal 😁, Ask some friend to ask you to attend weddings ceremonies, maybe you'll find some (or little bit) culture that rarely seen in daily lifes, minimum dangdutan maybe 😂 koploo..
