I've been watching laptop reviews for WEEKS, trying to decide on my next machine. This is hands down one of the best (for me) reviews I've watched. Clear, concise and truly helpful, using plain language that I can understand. I'm not techy, but I use a laptop every day for work. If I have an issue I can just call IT and, tadaaaa, it's fixed. When it comes to buying my own personal machine for home use, a whole new sphere of understanding my real needs and requirements comes into play. Thanks so much for this...I'm definitely leaning towards the Dell XPS 15, but now I understand why. And that's huge.

what kind of tasks would you be doing on a daily basis and what screen size preference did you have in mind? the specs of what you need for your specific types of daily usage/workload may vary. for example, if you were to do light to medium gaming or video editing on a 15 inch screen, i'd recommend an i5-i7, 16gb of ram, and a dedicated graphics card with at least 2gb of vram to run okayish in 1080p. A 13 inch screen, you would likely be getting a display that would be 1366x768 and that would need at least an i3/i5, 8 gigs of ram, and dedicated graphics with 1gb vram for light-medium gaming. If you only really browse youtube and do zoom calls, then maybe an i3 with integrated graphics would work but i'd recommend an i5 with dedicated graphics whenever possible. I had an i3 laptop with 8gb of ram previously running intel graphics (128mb of vram modified to use 512mb) and it was just bad at everything. It would struggle to run youtube at 720p at 60fps. multitasking was barely possible and video calls would run HOT + stutter a lot. this video is older so his recommendations are a little out of date. Just stay away from celeron processors, pentium processors, and intel graphics. They only bring suffering.

If you are on a budget don't overlook second hand. I recently bought a several year old premium laptop for 190 Euro. It has an SSD, IPS screen and even a decent graphics card. I don't see a real need for getting the latest CPU, an i5 of several years back is usually fine for anyone except hardcore gamers and other powerusers. If you don't belong to that group then getting a second hand one can save you several hunderd Dollars/Euros easily.

For anyone struggling with this, just go to an electronics store, and ask the laptop salesman "what would he choose for himself, regardless of commission" and they should genuinely help you. I work in an electronics store and while yes, sometimes commission will sway my decision, if I'm talking to a client who's really nice and friendly I will never give them a crappy thing.

One thing that bothers me, is the fact that you (and almost every other reviewer) don't recommend any laptops with AMD cpus. I used to believe Intel's the only choice, until I bought a 15.6" Toshiba Satellite with an amd cpu, about 3 years ago. It came with a quad core A6 6310 processor (1.8GHz), a Radeon R5 M230 (2GB) and 4GB of RAM (1600MHz). I bought it for 390€ and it's never let me down. I use it for Office, Autocad, browsing AND gaming (CS:GO and StarCraft 2 always on medium - high graphics). The battery used to last for about 5hrs. Nowadays it will last for 3-3.5 hrs which I still believe is great. A month ago I installed a Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD and it's even more fast and responsive. Anyways, great video mate! Also 1st time I'm visiting your channel.

One important consideration when buying laptop is the how the keys are arranged and whether there's a separate number pad, which can be extremely useful when punching in numbers in an excel sheet or any number for that matter. When I bought my Asus S530 UN, 15" display I was quite disappointed to discover that the keyboard didn't have dedicated home, end, pg up and pg down button, which makes navigating around a web page really easy.

Id say to be careful of the gpus laptops use, for example, the mx 150 comes in two varieties that are branded the same, but one is significantly slower, a 10 watt and a 25 watt version. Also not sure about this, but for ryzen it might matter whether the laptop is running single or dual channel memory. Thus a bit of research on what the laptop is doing could save you from buying something that does not meet your expectations.

You should probably mention the tdp of the processors but not just only the generation of them, because i7-7700HQ(older gen but higher tdp) performs better than i7-8650U (lastest gen but lower tdp), and the tdp of the processors may affect the performance of the GPU.
@Thetechchap
@Thetechchap 6 лет назад
Good point - difference between a U and HQ is very big. But I felt the specs/CPU was already getting a bit too complex, so i'll save that for a dedicated video :)

irakli Mgeladze Yes, in fact they have similar lv of performance when unlocked. So it's quite confusing to consumers when they are told that the latest gen is always better.

You are wrong. tdp have correlation with power consumption.If we compare 7700hq and 8550u, HQ have way higher maximum tdp (45 vs 25) and idle tdp (35 vs 10). The difference allow to have better battery life and more silent fan solution.
@zaka2630
@zaka2630 6 лет назад
Anyone saying the 7700HQ and the 8650U are the same certainly doesn't know his lessons and needs to learn more. The i7-7700HQ is a high performance CPU with a TDP limit of 45W, making it perfect for people who wish to sustain a fixed clock speed of 3.5 Ghz across all cores for probably HOURS of extreme loads. Since most laptops with the 7700HQ are gaming laptops, one would expect the cooling is extremely good (if it's not, then just do NOT get that laptop and look for something better). The i7-8650U is a multimedia/general usage CPU aimed at people who use ultrabooks for very basic things like writing documents and streaming. Intel advertizes the CPU for its ability to clock to speeds of 4.0Ghz. Impressive isn't it? well not really I'm afraid. The 8650U's advertized TDP limit is 15W in most laptops (and an unlocked limit of 25W in some laptops), making it ANYTHING but suitable for long-period stress tests. The CPU can easily turbo clock itself to 4.0Ghz, but I assure you it'll only take 5-10 seconds before it throttles down to less than 2.5Ghz (since its base clock is actually lower than 2.0Ghz). Not to mention the usually very average cooling seen in ultrabooks, making the throttling instances much more common. If you know your stuff and want a high performance machine able to play games and sustain huge loads for a long time, get a 7700HQ, or even better, wait for the 8th gen mobile gaming CPUs which will be available in laptops by Q3 2018 (they may sport 6 core CPUs!). The 8650U should be kept for its original usage which is what I've mentioned above.

I've been watching reviews for a long time. I'm still undecided. Actually, I'm looking for a laptop that can run AutoCAD, Adobe's photoshop, and occasionally any 3d design soft (like 3ds max or sketchup). I was thinking on buying the Matebook X Pro because its portability, but have doubts regarding the graphic card; also I have this alternatives in mind: ASUS ZenBook Flip UX461UN-DS74T, ASUS ZenBook 15 UX533FD-DH74, and the XPS 15 (but it's a little bit over my budget). I wanted to spend nearly 1300-1400 US. Thanks for your video!!! and it would be great to hear from you!

Rose Xoxo no its not. i have a laptop with 6 gigs of ram, the OS uses 2 gigs to start with. literally don't believe you had 30 tabs open with 4 gigs when i use 3 and am sitting at 3.5 gigs with no background tasks other than task manager. so maybe if all you do is word documents you might get by with 4, and im sure the surface devices are good, but to sell it with 4 gigs at that price is just offensive. my phone has 4 gigs of ram and only cost 350$!

For users that only want an on-the-go device to check email, browse the Web, and perform simple word processing tasks, 4GB is absolutely enough. Will you get top-of-the-line performance? Definitely not. However, buying a laptop with 4GB of RAM could help you cut costs if you don't need a high-performance machine, and it may be possible to upgrade it yourself for a lower price if you're tech-savvy enough. Plus, it also depends on the operating system you'll be using. Linux and Linux-based operating systems (i.e. MacOS and ChromeOS) are known for being able to run well on less-than-impressive hardware. 4GB of RAM is perfectly fine for a Linux-based OS, and it's very typical in lower-end machines that utilize these operating systems. Doesn't mean you can't accomplish simple tasks with them.

I would add 2 more points: 1. Serviceability. How easy is it to remove or replace the battery, RAM, HDD, SSD? 2. Reliability. It doesn't matter how good the specs and everything else are if the laptop dies after a couple of years or keeps breaking down every couple of months. (Of course, this last point is never mentioned in reviews.)

@sergeysyzranov3938
@sergeysyzranov3938 6 лет назад
Ivo Ovcharov , 1) 3 or 4 year warranty will never cover battery, 2) it will cost on the order of $300, not $100 3) Some extra factors come into play then. With big companies (Dell, Lenovo, HP) you may get relatively quick service, although experience will still be painful, with smaller companies (e.g. Sager, Razor, Gigabyte) you might need to ship you machine to them, and they will in turn ship it, e.g. to Taiwan. You will spend weeks or even months without a laptop and may just want to buy a new laptop in the meantime
@user-qy2wf2lt6v
@user-qy2wf2lt6v 6 лет назад
Sergey Syzranov Apple Care does cover battery life. In Denmark it costs around $250, but also a 15 inch MacBook is around $3600 compared to only $2400 in the States, so maybe it's cheaper overseas. And if it is like $160-70 it's ain't that much, really.
@sergeysyzranov3938
@sergeysyzranov3938 6 лет назад
Well, modern battery technology does not allow one to manufacture batteries which have reasonable capacity beyond 3 years... this is just the state of the art, so if you plan to use a laptop for 3-4 years, the battery will definitely need to be changed. I don't know about Apple services in terms of quality/costs though; you may be right. Of course, if you are an Apple person (nothing wrong about that), most of the characteristics discussed in this review are irrelevant for you.

I nearly bought an eMMC until doing research. What I did as a compromise is I bought a visiontek pro ssd with 256gb for about $150. This thing is found as a flash drive in searches but is an actual external portable ssd with great reviews! This way I may go with a smaller ssd laptop and store all my personal stuff on the visiontek. Plus, I needed some type of external storage in order to retrieve data from 2 old computers, a desktop and laptop. I will be placing a GPS device on the visiontek, as a precaution from being lost or stolen. Ssd vs eMMC is definitely worth the difference.

Well, I was finally able to sift through all the specs and order an Asus laptop with 256gb ssd!! If you shop around and really examine the specs should be able to find something decent and reasonable. Remember this time of year the new models will be coming out and last year's same quality models are being reduced in price.. Be careful to not accidentally purchase an eMMC when looking for ssd's. These are 2 completely different animals. First, the eMMC is NOT upgradeable as it is a card not a drive and it is embedded onto the mother board whereas an ssd can be easily removed and replaced with one with more storage. If you must go with a hard drive, just remember that it should not ever be dropped while the discs are spinning bc it can knock it out of alignment so it might not function.

I'm also a noob, intensively searching for a new laptop, but what I already learned, is that very much things that look nice to have, aren't important for mist people. Better a good powerful laptop with a good CPU/GPU, bigger battery and enough ports which you use (and in my case also a number pad and webcam) and enough storage, than 4k, 165 (or even more hertz), touch screen, RGB lit keys which give whole 'light shows', 2 in 1, fingerprint reader/ir, dual screen... Most people won't need these things, they only buy it because it looks fancy, but it has consequences on more important things (battery life, weight if it's important, computing power/speed,...). The first days I also searched for 2 in 1, until I realized that I can work perfectly with a normal laptop and already have a tablet. And sometimes it can ne nice to have a touch screen, but these laptops are significantly less powerful.
