Just throwing out 10 interesting deck ideas for Commander players to make their own. Patreon / edhdeckbuilding Ikra Life Gain tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ikra-... Darigaaz, let's lose friends tappedout.net/mtg-decks/darig...
you can check out my new series "Building Janky Commander Decks" where i tackle some of these ideas: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7EciSsOcNNM.html
This is exactly how I like to play command the only problem is a lot of people don't care about all your cool ideas they just want to win and will run and do everything they want to win.
@@MTGSavageyou gotta talk to people bro most ppl have some jank they wanna play, but their default is their most powerful. Legit just say “hey, I’m playing my silly deck with xyz gameplan, you mind playing something you think would be fun for that matchup?”. People are not devious, they wanna have fun too
I appreciate your thoughts with deckbuilding. The more videos I watch, the more I'm inspired. Great to see people that use cards more in the spirit of commander rather than just playing what EDHRec suggests to you.
The newer Trostani also has a homeward path effect! Maybe Marisi, activate all the abilities during combat so they can’t interrupt with spells, or Samut to give the tappers haste, or a partner pair. Not many commanders have a ton to do with it, so maybe just an unassuming one for the colors to be underestimated.
is this in response to the Land Toss ping idea? Marisi Boulder Throw deck seems interesting. Do you think it'd be hard to balance creature presence on the board enough to also keep a bunch of lands in your hand?
Loooovdd loved the Haakon deck! I had never heard of Ashes of the Fallen! I am sincerely considering building a deck with this strategy! Thanks for this content man
This video was sweet! I love brewing up janking decks and I have had a couple of similar decks in other formats (Seismic Assault + Land Tax specifically in Legacy), but I never could get it to work and I NEVER thought to try it out in commander. I am actually going a four colour route, adding in Black in addition to Naya, so that I can run Gitrog Monster. Gitrog + Seismic Assault is just pure value. I am really looking forward to seeing how this deck goes. Thank you for re-igniting my brewers spark :). I also loved all of the other ideas in this video, especially the Rebel Tribal
I literally had the same idea for that EarthLink/Darigaaz deck!! Probably annoying for opponents but definitely a different idea and a weird deck. Nice!!!
R/W is awesome for the Starke/Defector combo. Both recruiters are able to tutor either creature, weathered wayfarer can tutor the homeward path, and you also get access to W flicker stuff as a secondary way to keep your guys.
Awesome video thank you for this. I am working on a Darien deck that focuses on life gain and card draw. My win strategies are voltron, going wide with tokens and approach of the second sun.
Wow, you’ve got me inspired to build that golgari lifegain deck. I’ve been a big fan of grim feast for some time now. Just because of the ability and the really funny flavor text (pun intended?). I put it in my meren deck for some time just to see what it does, but the meren deck has little love for lifegain :-). I’m going to build this deck now. Thanks a lot man! Love all your other content too. Especially the 10 weird cards you never knew you wanted to put in a deck :-).
I've been wanting to build a Boros deck around mechanics like Boros Reckoner and Spitemare but I think Naya is a color combination to consider with a general like Jared. Great video.
This video is awesome. Totally encompasses, to me, what commander is about. Also, not to one up you or anything but the commander deck I've had the longest, probably for 4 years now is an Ikra and Reyhan life gain deck....but its spider tribal
I like to think my ninjutsu edh deck has it's moments. Cunning evasion is glorious with it since it's conditions activate before the ninjutsu conditions are met meaning I can basically flash ninjas as long as something remains unblocked.
I made a green/black life gain deck based around Willowdusk, Essence Seer, and I think it does its job pretty well despite me only having a limited selection to what cards I can put in there. However, I think willowdusk would fit very well in your green/black life gain deck because it puts a number of +1/+1 counters on a creature equal to the amount of life you gained or lost this turn. Its pretty sweet, i think.
Just stumbled on this video and I was already making a Gruul Land Creatures deck. Definitely is a proxy deck I'd play where runs more than normal lands for both graveyard and battlefield shenanigans
I love all ur unique ideas, you gave me inspiration to make a deck around EarthLink where I try to give my opponents poop creatures and nuke them so they gotta get sac of all their lands. Super junk but could be fun
Wow, I’ve been making a card dump for a deck like that, but not with the intense spice of earthlink! June really has the best colors for gifting creatures to opponents. So far my “punish” cards are things like Rakdos Charm, Rampaging Ferocidon, Incite Rebellion. But now that they have more tokens, you’d discourage them from attacking you with Frontier Warmonger, and white gives things like Ghostly Prison and Orzhov Advokist. But earthlink is a really strong way to finish! I have the card dump here if you’re interested: www.moxfield.com/decks/hKXi_rAIeUOsXIGLLlg2Ag
Loved this video, I've been playing iname for quite some time, but I'm only using a handful of spirits. The self recurring guys: nether shadow, nether traitor, bloodghast and krovikan horror are amazing with skullclamp, and species specialist. Kuro pitlord, kagemaro, and Horobi are perfect for board control, and kokusho is an amazing wincon. I also use songs of the dead and mass reanimation spells. Just wanted to highlight that you don't really need to waste precious deck slots on useless spirits, you only really need the good ones.
One of my favorite deck ideas is the randomized deck. I've heard of Mayael, Kaalia, and Golos decks where they own a separate deck and shuffle 25-40 cards from that deck into the first one. Randomizing your hits off Golos, or your demons, or creatures with power 6 sounds really cool to me.
I'm 100% building that 'land slinging deck' around Zacama, Primal Momma. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget for land tax but hey, it'll still be a crazy deck.
I have a Haakon deck, and it's one of my favorite decks to play. Having to go on a side quest just to cast your commander obviously isn't the strongest (but it is fun/rewarding if you can do it!), but I've gotten quite a few wins with it because people assume I'm not worth their attention :P then you cast Gary a few times in one turn and the game is yours haha. Having Netherborn Altar in addition to Command Beacon is definitely helpful! And yeah, Nameless Inversion can just wipe your opponents' whole boards if you've got a Jet Medallion and a ton of Black Market mana to blow.
I made a deck that ran Land Tax, Seismic Assualt, Zuran Orb, Life from the Loam, and Crucible of Worlds among other unique cards. It was a Naya Control/Stax decks. Every card in the deck had the text "land" on it.
I run Darien in my Teysa, Orzhov Scion deck. He can really get out of control if left unchecked. I like the idea of making him the commander and abusing his trigger.
Had a slapped together Darien mono white soldier deck, was surprisingly good, but just cracked a WB Kudro and thinkin about shifting it to black white aristocrat
hope to se some johney decks because thats what i usually build ( : oh love seeing darigaaz and ikra shidiqi i always try to find an excuse to slot them in decks and im glad im not the only one whos seen non-white lifegain decks played. and you take that back about haakon being a terrible commander!!! he can win easily turn 2-3
I love your deck ideas! I’m actually going to steal two of them! I’m throwing your homeward path package in a jund deck revolves around using green’s land ramp to cast big fun rakdos spells, and then I’m using your rumbling slum idea as a secondary way to play in a temur deck focused on instants and sorceries. Keep up the great content. You have made me spend an uncomfortable amount of money in the past week, lol
My Toggo-Kydele rocks deck does a lot with Rumbling Slum/Curiosity, though with more creatures like Looter il-Kor that trigger when dealing damage (mostly with rocks). Probably a bit more unwieldy than straight pingers and Curiosity-style damage enchanters, but ROCKS!
Mono Black Haakon Knight Tribal is my newest Pet Project. Im slowly tuning it and its turning into one of my favorite decks. Lots of tutors to search my Command Beacon or Netherborn Altar. Recently Tevesh Szat is fantastic in Haakon because I can sacrifice Haakon and draw 3 cards then play him back. Its also the perfect deck to play 33 Swamps and Cabal Coffers. Im still tuning it, but its a great project.
Love the deck ideas, especially the land discard! Maybe with the new Hazezon since he can return deserts. One thing that I noticed was that with the Iname maskwood combo, you can't actually use Mikaeus Triskelion combo because maskwood makes everything a human as well 😅
Yes, Nameless Inversion and Haakon. My buddy rocked that when those sets were in standard together. Very mean. He took down a few FNMs with that deck. FYI, to save you any future chuckles at your expense, Iname is pronounced ee-NAH-may
wow I saw this video and thought to myself: you basically explained my Borborygmos Enraged (#2) and Atla Palani-Enrage (#4) decks... :D Also a really good deck for Stuffy Doll is Nin, the Pain Artist (ping your creatures, draw cards, deal damage to opponents) Towards your curiosity-idea (#7): I made a Breeches/Malcolm non-pirate deck, where I turn something like Electrostatic Field into a pirate and start playing instants/sorcerys for days! #9 I preferred to go for the Iname, Life Aspect - Spirit Tribal (mostly Kamigawa cause I love that block) as long as your graveyard is not removed you become stronger after every bord wipe! At #10 I went for a fun deck based around the fun sets from Magic (like Unstable) to go for Squirrel Knights! With Xenograft, Arcane Adaption, Ashes of the Fallen... I really like your way of thinking! And i also thought about that Starke of Rath/Humble Defector/Homeward Path and I think I will think about that idea again XD
I made a Mardu Knights Reanimator deck with Haakon as the secret commander. It's strong. But I didn't even think about how Crib swap would work. I'm running that now. Thank you.
Dunno if somebody already mentioned it (or you saw it somewhere), but for the Jacques strategy in no.4: There is "Rites of Passage" from Fifth Dawn. No creature with 2+ health will die to pyrohemia anymore, just grow - fast.
Wow dude, awesome ideas. I'll probably use some to play on my channel if you don't mind :) can't wait to see some of your takes on the new Strixhaven cards!
For your Land Tax / Seismic Assault idea in Naya. Add the enchantment [Wheel of Sun and Moon]. This card is an enchant player card. So, fun to throw it on a player who is trying to put stuff in the GY be it self mill or a GY deck. Or on yourself when dealing with people who are trying to make you discard, mill, or steal stuff out of your GY. :) For my Darien deck, I use Karma and Urborg. To up the BS add in a Kormus Bell and Elish Norn.
The Jacques le Vert deck made me think: Vigor, but that replaces all the damage to your creatures so you get no enrage triggers, but if you are in red, Vigor + Chandra's Ignition is a huge non-infinite combo, 6 damage to everything else and your board gets 6 +1/+1 counters and also works with Star of Extinction but you'll shuffle in Vigor unless it has Indestructible or protection from red.
i know its alittle old.. but if you are going red why not go big: Blasphemous Act - 13 damge to each creature, and it cost less for each creature on the battlefield
Proud Haakon deck owner here. I love this ugly zombie boi. Maskwood nexus being printed recently made me super excited for it too! There’s also another command beacon card that was printed recently in black called netherborn altar and just having two cards over one in the deck that do the thing makes it so much more consistent.
For the 7th deck there’s a commander called Malcolm that says whenever you deal damage (any kind of damage) make a treasure for each opponent delt so you make cards that deal damage to everyone into it and ways to make your creatures into pirtares is a really fun deck
Had an idea for a Mask Theme centered around Estrid though I figured it was too soon since we're still in the middle of a pandemic having to wear face masks and social distance from one another.
In terms of using 'Haakon, Stromgald Scourge' in any deck you make use of various mechanics to get him to the graveyard. If he is in your hand then you can make use of things like 'Survival of the Fittest' and you discard Haakon and it allows you to search for another Knight or another creature card that you require for a given mechanic. The second method is to actually use spells like the Sorcery 'Buried Alive' this allows you to search for three creatures in your library and put them directly in your graveyard. So in this case the other creatures could be something that benefits you when it is put in the graveyard a combination that would work well would be 'Haakon, Stromgald Scourge', 'Quakebringer', and 'Garenbrig Paladin' as you can cast Haakon now from your Graveyard then cast Garenbrig Paladin as he is a Knight. However, because Garenbrig is also a Giant he will trigger the Quakebringer each upkeep doing 2 damage to each opponent.
Hakkon works well in an edgar markov deck. Pair it with a basal sliver, skeletal changeling to get infinite vampire tokens from edgars eminence ability. I think edgar is a knight too (maybe a soldier or warrior).
I'm currently brewing a Scion, The Urdragon/Maskwood Nexus deck. I was looking for a decent way to sneak Phage, The Untouchable into play without dying. The basic idea is you seeing with Scion, wait until blockers are declared (or not), the use Scion to search for Phage.
for the haakon thing anything with the ability that alows you to cast them for something else if you immediately sack them works really well (i think its called echo or invoke or smthing)
I like Haakon so much. I have him in a casual knight tribal deck with Aryel and while it's a pain to get him to the graveyard, once he goes there, suddenly the deck starts to draw attention (and usually get beaten to a pulp, but meh, it's fun). It never occured to me that the tribal non-creature spells actually have a type and are eligible for casting from the graveyard.
I recently built a deck using the "do damage to your own stuff" mechanic and Marath as my general and it's really fun to play. You can both ping your creatures for value or go heavy artillery with Blasphemous Act or Star of Extinction to wipe the board while getting insane effects at the same time (while generating a ton of tokens or repercussing the damages to an opponent with cards like Stuffy Doll)
Well I'm not sure about Vigor, I want my stuff to be actually dealt damage so I can get something out of it. But I see what you mean, I'm running Rite of passage in this sense.
I just put Haakon in an esper deck, I actually made it a knight tribal to capitalize on his ability. Funnily, the commander for that deck is the only non-knight, I chose Bane, Lord of Darkness as a way to make it easier to get knights onto the board faster, or just draw a bunch of cards, either is great.
I recently built a deck for Asmoranimardicadaistinaculdicar(oof), and I included stuffy doll in that one. Sac food tokens to hit stuffy doll for a bunch of damage then send that damage to an opponent 👌
I had been thinking of what cards would’ve been the least used cards in commander and I started thinking about all the cards that require you have more cards of the same name. There are plenty of cards like aven shrine, bifurcate, assembly hall, bloodbond march, secret salvage, echoing courage, echoing return, echoing truth, doubling chant, locket of yesterday’s, mask of the mimic, pattern matcher, remembrance, chrome replicator, or thrumming stone (expensive card) and probably more that you might be able to find. This would be a great excuse to use some of the cards that allow as many copies in a deck as you want like shadowborn apostle, relentless rats, rat colony, persistent petitioners, dragons approach, and seven dwarves (that’s limited though). Maybe throw in some cards like clone or stunt double to increase the number of those cards on the battlefield. If this is an idea that you’ve covered before let me know, but I’ve just started looking at this and I would definitely need some help putting it together.
Quick add on G/B lifegain, Roots of Life + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Green has land tutors, black has tutor for anything... Your opponent plays a spell, you gain 10 life... seems fair.
Man, so many stuff from an era of mtg play i used to mainly play. I have Iname, Haakon and Ashes of the Fallen. XD Most of the cards in Kamigawa block and Coldsnap were overlooked thanks to Mirrodin block being too efficient compared to other things during those times, and I love that things are looking up for these unfortunate cards in the commander format. As for commander considerations for a Haakon's style deck, I think Tormod, the Desecrator + some other commander should be the starting point. I personally would prefer Rograkh, coz with Haakon and Ashes of the Fallen and a sac outlet in play, that is a storm enabler. XDDD On a side note: From what I remember, Iname is a 3 syllable name, so it should be pronounced as ”ee-nah-meh”.
