******IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT******* Hello Gentry! Thank you for watching this video. I am currently on a watch related adventure to bring you new and exciting content and I will reply to your comments as soon as possible. In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend. Onwards and upwards! Best regards, TGV P.s. Unlike me, Hugo will be in first class, enjoying extra leg room and unlimited refills of champers. :-/
The link to the watchbox app doesn't auto launch the play store it just goes to the website. Not sure if it's supposed to do that or not. Figured I'd let you know
Hello sir, today was a great find. I was cleaning my attic, found a citizen automatic watch. At first I thought it was a quartz, so I thought of changing the strap and buying a battery. Then I read on the face and it said automatic. I wound the minute hand, moved around the watch and.... it started working. Yay. I wore it with its worn out belt throughout the day while cleaning to give it a charge. I later asked my mom about it and she said it belonged to my late dad. It was gifted to him in mid 1980s. Wow. It is still working. It probably had been in rest for nearly 18 years. I have actually tagged you in the tweet with a photograph. When the second hand started sweeping, you came on my mind and I badly wanted to share it with you sir. It was a great find. :')
It all starts with one. I found my late father's square seiko 5 that had spent 10 years and some part of that time underwater in a bowl of screws. And had it restored.
I posted a picture of my Omega on a watch forum and immediately someone said "your wrists look small. Lift some weights.". I was really turned away by that comment because I did a TON of research into what I wanted to purchase as my first watch. It is not too large by any means but I was struck by how rude people can be online. If it's not your taste, keep it to yourself. Let that person enjoy their watch!
Mark McDonnell You actually can put a monetary value to enjoyment. Yes it’s still somewhat subjective but what could you have done with that money that could have offered more or the same level of enjoyment? Could there have been more enjoyment if you were to have bought something else? You could buy a new Mercedes E Class for $60,000 or you could defer your enjoyment for 3 years and then pay $27,000 for the same car. Was saving $33,000 worth the deferral? Everyone has a price including enjoyment.
There’s a reason you have 350k subscribers: you consistently keep a positive attitude. Thanks for the video! (And tell Hugo to start saving for a new camera instead of flying first class ;-)
I bought a Grand Seiko SBGX261 and it's a lot of watch (in terms of finish, restrained and austere looks and staggering accuracy +/- 10 seconds a year). In fact, during the first 6 months of ownership the time keeping has not deviated from my clock which is synchronised with atomic clock time.
When you wear a certain watch (or watches) to impress people, and put down other people because of what they wear, you cheapen the watch and turn it into a fashion piece.
Great vid. I am always perplexed with people who only regard expensive watches worth talking about. There's nothing more relaxing _ for me _ than to sit in my backyard with a cold beer and stare at my sundial on a warm sunny afternoon.
Let people have their "guilty pleasure" watches. Nobody should feel ashamed to wear something which isn't widely accepted in the community. Looking forward to the next one. Regards, Koen
"accepted in the community"?. I wasn't aware that i need the approval of a "community" to wear whatever the heck i want to wear. So, in my case, i like Casios, is that brand accepted by the "community"? what a bunch of snobs
i like quartz watches.. realy, they are my coup of tea. i like the ticking of the secondhand, i like the presice timing, the affordability the low maintenance and i like the horological significance of quartz. for me, horology is the art (and history) of mesure the time in always better and better ways.. and quartz was (and is) a hugh step forwarts. whitout quartz, there will be no atomic clock, no qps, no timecode, no internet, no modern navigation in any form. i mean.. quartz, thats what john harrison must dreamed of: a watch, that always tells the correct time, regardles of the circumstances
-be into horology (the study/keeping of time). -consider yourself a watch enthusiast. -prefer less accurate methods of time keeping (mechanical/automatic). -hate quartz watches for being devoid of a soul, despite them "keeping time" more accurately by a large margin. also more durable and cost effective. i will never understand.
Quite right T! Love that show...I agree with the Quartz comment, I absolutely love some quartz watches...in fact, I just ordered a Timex Q reissue today :) BTW Hugo's a plonker too haha! Best Regards Stuart
@@Oberkommando I follow Timex on Instagram, and they let everyone know 24hrs before release too. So I even had an alarm set on my phone, so I didn't forget :)
Quartz put about 60% of Swiss watchmakers out of business so yeah, it's part of history. Maybe a 70s Seiko quartz, because these are the watches the Swiss feared most.
On the retaining value thing , I buy watches that I find aesthetically pleasing to me and I have no plans to resell them. That also runs into the way I feel about quartz Vs auto....it's the outside that draws your eye , not the inside. You don't see someone you find attractive and think " hmmm I wonder what her ribcage looks like". My last moan 🤣 is the amount of people who cry about water resistance being less than a Dive watch...who knew there was so many budding Jacques Cousteaus out there.
Funny... but my Suunto D6, an actual (gasp... quartz) dive computer that's been underwater with me several hundred times, and down to well past recreational scuba depths, is "only" 150m . Dunno what to say. It's worked for like a thousand hours plus underwater with nothing but battery and gasket changes. I haven't seen anyone in over a decade actually rely on a "dive watch" for diving. It just doesn't make any sense, when for the same or less money you can buy a full fledged dive computer with ten times the functionality and significantly better safety. Last time I actually used a dive watch for diving was 1995. These days if you're into diving casually enough that you don't have a computer, you will surely be on a guided dive, where you don't even need a watch. I lived in Asia teaching scuba for a year, and I can't recall ANY of the people I worked with owning what watch geeks would consider a "dive watch," it was 100% non dive watches and dive computers. Most of the instructors just wore a D6 as their one and only watch.
@@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски Something like that. If an instructor is going to sink money into something, it'll be a dive computer. Once a dive bum instructor shells out $1k for a nice computer, there's not much attraction in spending more on a dive watch for fashion. If you're actually going to dive, a watch makes no sense, when you can get a computer for the same price as an SKX. All the students were given a basic Suunto computer to wear, so there's no need for them to have a dive watch either. Heck, I mean, I wouldn't even dive with my dive watches, there's no point.
I understand your point that there can be problems with the watch's movement and it is under warranty, however, Seiko's low end pieces often have dials that are improperly aligned. That is inexcusable.
I recently bought a limited edition Timex xTodd Snyder and I love having that quartz piece in my collection amongst the likes of my Rolex, Omega, Tudor and Tags.
The normal Seiko is getting worse and worse though. Seiko right now is becoming the shadow of its glory. Its new low class watches design is getting worse. The ability of watch being a tool watch is becoming worse. Seiko is trying to become japanese Rolex. But the thing is, they are going overpriced without the increasing quality. Yes I know I am one of the person being talked. Though I quite agree with Grand Seiko
Good conversation TGV. Valid observations today, my two cents would be quartz for accuracy and Mechanical for artistry. I am a simple and humble man who loves watches, so let’s start a conversation. Stay true TGV, all the best Sir. 🥃
Re: explorer reluctance. I had the same with bracelet watches. I hated them, but for some reason (thanks to Sinn) I'm a huge fan of them again. The bead blasted steel just looks awesome as far as I'm concerned. I no longer wear nothing but natos.
OMG...all this time I assumed TGV and Hugo were the same person...you know, like TGV was doing a bit with a toy dinosaur or something. But now, I don't know what to think.
Two of my favourite watches are my Seiko 5 and a 1960s Certina I found recently. They both cost less than 150 bucks... and they seem to attract the most positive comments.
You know what´s interesting, after buying my first watch in the ~1000 Euro range I started enjoying my Seiko 5 more. Hard to tell why, but I guess the more I get into the details of different movements and specifications I learn to appreciate watch engineering on different levels. I think you are right that someone specializing in luxury pieces is missing out on something.
Hi TGV Don’t respond to the snobs in real life, neither the trolls on the net. “An Eye for an Eye makes the whole World blind” Ghandi Very good points & advice as always. Have a nice weekend and - keep up the good work😊👍
Back in the mid-80's, my girlfriend at the time (Who is now my wife of 34 years) bought me a low end Swiss made quartz watch. It is a 14k layered gold Andre Chavez with a black dial. It has a day/date complication window at the 3 o'clock position and I have completely ruined the outside of the watch and the glass. If I had all the money in the world I would own a bunch of nice watches like Rolex and the like, but that Andre Chavez would still be my favorite watch.
Greetings from Sweden again. Great video and Hugo delivers as usal. I got my first automatic watch about a week ago and I rather like it. Vostok Kommenderski and it's bright yellow.
You are a gentleman with integrity and honour. Love hearing these thoughts on manners and etiquette because it's so easily forgotten in general day to day society.
I’ve always felt that true tool watches should be quartz or digital. I have to have a tool watch (Casio Duro) for my job because of the physical nature of my work and it’s fantastic. It’s been slammed against the ground multiple times and only loses a second per month. We should not dismiss quartz. They are the only true tool watches.
What happened to the guy TGV went to Switzerland with? Sorry I can't remember his name. Seems weird he does these videos with people then they disappear without trace.
#7 with the recognition of micro brands, in my opinion, with you interviewing/reviewing or talking about smaller, micro brands. Because you have an amazing following, I think you really help the smaller brands. Not just the ones you talk about, but it makes you curious about what else is out there. So we delve into the unknown part of whatches and it educates you a lot more than researching big brands. NTY video is an good example, exceptional watches, but what else is there...
Such a great message mate. My Dad passed away in 2014 and I recently came into possession of the watch he wore for years. It's a very inexpensive quartz and many people probably wouldn't look twice at it, but it's worth more to me than all my others put together. It proves to me that the value of a watch is in the way it makes the wearer feel and the memories it may preserve and no one has the right to diminish that or try to take it away from you.
If someone wears a watch on regular basis, i observ how much he/she is on time but not the brand.... I'd rather talk about watch with someone who shows up in time even If they wear Casio F-91W.
"Cheap" watches that are received as gifts to celebrate anything in life are far more meaningful and satisfying than an expensive watch one buys out of sheer desire and celebrates nothing.
What bothers me- 1. Buying image. 2. Buying story. 3. Using 1 and 2 to buy a life. 4. Selling pieces. Without commitment, watch relationships are shallow. Commitment is the story.
I have no problem with the idea of quartz, but I want to throw my watch when I see it not indexing correctly. When it ticks just barely off of the index kills me.
Steve Dave Syncing up three carburetors with two barrels each is no easy task. Kinda reminds me of regulating a mechanical watch movement or adjusting timing with points vs electronic ignition.
I have been watching your channel for a while, just never commented. This vid is very refreshing and quite informative. I will definitely share this with my watch group.
Hugo 'Herzog' is an absolute treasure. He should certainly throw his hat into the ring to be the new PM or acting monarch, whichever is most convenient. 💂♂️
Did you sneak in a quote from the Wu Tang Clan? ✌️ Anyways, I know someone who loved the way one of my citizen divers looked. I offered to give it to him and basically his response was, "I can't wear that, I'm just too used to high end watches." To this day, he only has ever owned Rolex watches.
Are you really being a gatekeeper for what being a fan of "horology" means. I love watches but have absolutely no interest in time-keeping devices pre 1930's and pocketwatches in general. Does not mean I can't be part of the club now?
You are totally right with the quarz . I love the breitling b1 ,it is such a great watch and it has so many useful complications that couldn't be in a mechanical watch. Greetings from germany
🇬🇧 Brilliant video. Loved the subtle and professional response (that I believe it was), to some commentators out there. Exceptionally well done. TGV, if you are happy, able to give your family what they need and you do no harm, good for you. 😊👍
Refreshing to hear this. I’m guilty of maligning brands because friends have had one and a bad experience. It’s silly. But great attitude throughout. Nice one
I’m one who can couldn’t care less about appreciating or holding values. I’m that way about cars and watches. Granted this means that I don’t buy all too often. But generally when I make an “investment” purchase I keep it until its lost, stolen or destroyed. That’s why I’m 37 and still have my 68 VW from high school
Once again, great video. I love the quotes, very thought provoking. I have quartz and mechanical, I enjoy both but in different ways. My plastic calculator watch (casio) is fun and useful at times. My 67' omega seamaster chronostop is great to marvel at what's going on inside and to look at... However, if I want to have the accurate time, I look at my phone.
Thank you for this vid.so many vloggers just talk high end and not the entry level.when I got interested in watches you helped me appreciate all types and brands.keep it up. Good work fella.
Anon ymous they have a few in the dark side of the moon series the normal reference is (311.92.44.51.01.003) I totally agreed about the black black model much harder to read dial.
For expensive watches, I'm not rich enough to NOT buy Rolex exactly because they keep their value. If you like to flip watches and upgrade or change around quite a bit it's a no-brainer. If I were wealthy enough to not care whether a watch lost it's value or not, then it would be a different matter altogether and I would get some higher priced more odd pieces.
I love this channel please don't stop what ever your doing actually I use this channel for my morning routine, your voice is good well balanced with a bit of jazz just love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot TGV! I've got a bone to pick with you! It started with a Seiko SNK809, and I thought I'd stop with the slightly dressier SNK793...and then I found your videos. Then I went and got the PADI turtle. ...and then I went I picked up a vintage Gruen Precision from Ebay, and then found a $5 vintage Helbros in an antique store. ...and now I have my eye on the Seiko SNZH57 and the Orient solar panda... What have you done?! My wallet is very angry with you! Ha ha ha!
All the bragging , hate, expert/nonexpert opinions are wide spread in life (cars, weapons, pens, cigars, cutlery .....etc...) . Unfortunately it's human nature..... .
Agree sir. I try to use my little channel to entertain and educate. And Lord knows the grief I get, such as my unabashed love for the microbrand Zelos (I own 20 of them, plus 5 for my dad). Or folks hacking me for my voice, or God forbid I make a mistake!!!!! You'd think I committed original sin!!!! But I take inspiration from channels like yours and WatchBox and others and try to keep it positive, only review watches I have experience with, and try to do my research before I post.
EXACTLY TGV! "Give Microbrands a chance!" Let's ALL STOP HATING on MVMT, make a purchase, wear for at least 6 months and conduct reviews! TGV, you go FIRST!
10. Dismissing watches before you even try them 9. Persistent hatred for quartz 8. Hating on the entire brand because of one bad experience 7. The "armchair watch designer" 6. "Entry level watches are the waste of money" 5. Obsession with value and value retention 4. People calling themselves aficionados, conocers, experts. 3. "I'm into horology" 2. Arguing over watches 1. Everybody has different taste Thankz me later.
