Reminds me of this one I came across the other day: “People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.” - Dalai Lama
I tried modding my Nautilus to remove the hands and fit a sundial, but I found I had difficulty getting a shirt sleeve on over it. Plus I had no idea what time it was if I was indoors or at night.
The Seiko 5 my mother bought me for my 14th birthday will always be my favourite watch, it’s actual monetary value is irrelevant...and analogous with all my watches, it isn’t worn to impress others.
My watch collection consists of a dozen pieces that are under $500. If I had saved all that money to buy an expensive watch I wouldn't have a dozen watches.
Same with me i did a count and yes if saved that money... But i dont really care, i love my watches, and i dont think i ever would wear Rolex & Co 😉 its not really my style anyway, but a grand seiko spring drive Will enter the collection one Day, its a little more under the radar and more me.
@@Mister_Phafanapolis what? he constantly says just have fun, do what makes you happy, get homage watches or ridiculous big watches if thats what you want
The last comment should be printed and handed to every single human being on earth: don't buy things to impress others, instead, impress others with your positivity, charm, intellect, kindness, generosity, friendship, decent conversation.
I wonder if TGV has transcribed the rules in his notebook. He could sell copies to fund another Rolex! :) He must have over a dozen videos discussing watch Snobs: I hope people are beginning to take note and learn!
Don Cankook I think with a looming worldwide recession on the cards, in a few months we may be seeing lots of cut price pre-owned Rolexes from those desperate for cash. Luxury items are the first products to feel the sales pinch. In fact, when you can buy an accurate, durable timepiece (Casio!) for about $20, probably any automatic watch over about $200 could be considered a luxury item!
This channel is not only to growth on watches knowledge, but mostly on how to become a real gentleman. Hugo is a stealer TGV, this T-Rex is insane! LOL Best regards from Brazil!
Fernando da Fonseca if art makes you happy, was it then really useless? I paint miniatures and I’m happy to see my progress and results. There many other forms of art and benefits respectively. You think that’s useless?
Crypsis, you just didn’t understand. I was merely quoting a famous phrase from Oscar Wilde. Didn’t say it was my thought. Entirely with you, if any form of art brings you any sort of reaction, it has already achieved something.
You gotta give it to Hugo, he definitely "rex" everything! Great intro looking forward to the rest. Given I'm wearing my Casio A153 retro classic incredibly affordable favourite work watch I'd like to think I'm not a watch snob, but we shall see in 20mins or so! 👍
I had it but gave it as a gift to my best friend.. It suits him better than me wirh my 8" wrists xD.. But i love casio to death.. I started with my edifice 100-L and i stuggle to go to other watches xD because it is that good.. :D.. I got many watches from different price categories.. From casio20€ ca53w to 1000€ junghans ato-chron.. But the watches i love the most is my 65€ edifice and 79€ citizen eco drive(i actually inherited from my granpa) those things just go and go and go.... And look great :) it doesnt matter what watch you wear, what matters is that you love it and its history!
I have 2 Expeditions on velcro. One digital and one field analog. Super light, easy to read, Indiglo, and easily worn on my belt loops in the summer, when it's too hot for a watch on my wrist, and no tan line on my wrist either.
Chris Bloem Congratulations! mine has no alignment issues either and runs -9 sec/day out of the box. The SKX is a watch that grows on your wrist and puts a smile on your face. Cheers from Denmark the Stig
The word, "SNOB" comes from Latin. It's an acronym and stands for, "Sine Nobilitatum." Translated, it means, "without nobility." Being truly humble, honoring of others and not judging, is noble. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Excited getting a seagull 1963 for 15th birthday, found on AliExpress for $180 sapphire, clear display back and 3 straps, really can't wait! P.S love the channel, you inspired me to get my first Casio A168W
Congratulations, it’s such a cool one! Very elegant retro look It’s one watch I would buy in an instant, without any afterthought ... if I had $180 to spend... but with my limited means, I bought the simple version... same cream face, same red star, mechanical... only the basic hands let it a bit down but once my brown leather strap arrives, I don’t think it will leave my wrist for a while
@@toddalshouse5164 you should, I have one as well and it's a fantastic piece and extremely affordable. You won't regret it. It's a keeper in my collection
I like the Cadisen c1030 a watch I will be getting once we are in the clear with this pandemic. The Cadisen c1030 is a copy of a watch I can only dream of owning the Nomos Lambda,I will settle for the copy so I don't care what the snobs think of me.
I used to own two Amphibias. Another one was Russian army-version Ратник 6э4-1, that I sold today. Those watches really have some strange charm on them. Rugged, robust and accuracy is close to being horrible, but those ones always work, no matter what. At some point I am probably going to buy a Scuba dude and Radio room versions. I'm pretty sure about it, even though I should rather sell than buy more watches.
Mine fell of a 5 story balcony because a drunk friend thought it was funny. The freakin watch survived. Which made me realize that in soviet russia, boctoc doesn't make watches. Watches make boctoc.
I had a G-Shock that cost about $35.00 and lasted from 2004-2012. Wore it every day. Just changed the batteries and wristbands which broke often. Eventually all the ‘Shock Plates’ chipped off because of my work. Still used it until it started making funny noises one day and died. I think some water leaked in and finished it.
@@CN-wt2bj False. Da Gama, Magellan, and Elcano were far more adventurous. Da Gama: On July 8th, 1497, Vasco da Gama led four ships with 170 men from Lisbon. The distance traveled in the journey around Africa to India and back was greater than around the equator. Ferdinand Magellan: He led the first successful expedition to circumnavigate the Earth. The exact distance he traveled around the world was 14,460 leagues (43,400 miles or 69,800 kilometers), this is a little longer than three years. Juan Sebastian Elcano: He was a Basque sailor who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in human history in the Magellan-Elcano expedition. He decided to take command of the expedition after the death of Ferdinand Magellan. (Google is your best friend)
There was no such person as Captain Cook. James Cook never actually held the rank of Captain - he never commanded a ship large enough to warrant that rank. He was a lowly Lieutenant when he came to Australia.
Been a while since i've commented one of your vids, congratulations on your new adventure with watchbox! Great take on what a real gent should be, cheers! Onwards & Upwards
I've come full circle. It took almost 20 years to go from rookie to snob to, finally, enjoying all time-pieces. It's so much better now. Snobbery can be exhausting.................. and expensive.
Dear TGV, this is the first time I am leaving you a comment but I cannot stand any more...to say thanks!! I have always being into watches because of me being an engineer I do really appreciate such an amount of engineering put together into a bracelet piece...but the reason why I say thanks to you is because of the messages behind all your videos: the importance of hard work, being humble, respecting other people and to love what you do. Be aware TGV you are making a great job, congratulations! Greetings from France
I have definitely been guilty of firing off some snarky and jealous comments. Not proud of it. I have to work on keeping that little monster locked in his miserable cage. Haha. Great stuff! So glad you did this one. --Michael
I fell in love with the Rolex Submariner at 16. With prices as they are I know I'll never own one, so I bought an Invicta Pro Diver to scratch that particular itch. Meanwhile I own six Seikos, a Casio, a Citizen and a Bulova. The most expensive is the Bulova at around $350. I'm looking at Orient next because I don't have one and they have some beautiful affordable examples. I would never look down on someone who only collects affordables due to financial constraints, that would be silly. I also don't look down on someone who only collects luxury watches...UNLESS they are snobbish about it. Even then I dislike the person for their snobbish attitude, not their choice of watch.
I just bought my first SKX007J simply because I saw it on your channel and instantly liked it. Who cares about the price? „Horologists“ would then probably also refuse a bottle of wine that costs less than 20 bucks...
TGV, I love your videos. I learn so much about the watch industry, etc.. However, this video is a general lesson for society. It could be summed up in the profound words of Bill S. Preston, Esq., “be excellent to each other.” 👍😎👍
I've come up with a novel way to neutralize the negative energy of snobs and the like. I simply imagine Droopy speaking their words. It's instant comedy!
Snob or not ? Check the price of your cheapest wristwatch against your most expensive wristwatch... if there's a 10K difference, You're not a watch snob !!!
Great list. For me, I will admit to find Seagull or Sellita movements more fascinating to learn about than, for example Patek. Mainly because I am a bit afraid that I will become obsessed and do something stupid like buying a Patek. Which for me at this point would be astronomically stupid because it would ruin me financially for a long, long time. I have slightly started to look into Omega and Rolex movements and models, and also a little bit of Pateks and APs, but I need to know I can trust myself before I dive head first into that universe. But, I also think it's really interesting to look deeper into brands like Bulova or Tissot, which has long, rich history, but with a much kinder price tag. And, I can appreciate a 50 year old Certina as much as a Daytona, and I will "judge" them more equally regardless of what logo is stamped on the crown, taking the price and all that into consideration, obviously, but I won't shove away the €400 Certina just because it's a €400 Certina. And in regards to luxury, I like to think of my selection of jackets as a luxury; there's a few mid-range leather jackets (which all fits me perfectly, and are of great quality for the price), then there's a wool-coat I had sown to fit me better at a tailor after I bought it and lost weight, then there's some Armani's, etc, and for the price of all those jackets I could probably get myself one really, really high-end leather jacket (or a Tudor Black Bay Crono). But then I wouldn't have the option to choose, and my whole wardrobe would have to circuit around that one jacket. I'm not a very wealthy man, and I'd rather have some affordable things to chose from, than just be forced to pick one, same goes for watches, whiskey and women. Variety is the spirit of life.
Who cares about what other people like or not. You buy a watch for function and and the motivator is function, design price and quality. And same values goes for all consumer products clothes, Cars. If people desire what you have paid for and owns it,s because they think you have good taste. Sometimes a low-end Watch is more flash then a high-end one. Simply because the non watch enthusiast don't have the knowledge to se the difference and thinks that all that glitters are Rolex,Patek, A.P, Richard Mille, Jacob & CO.
The quickest way to annoy a watch snob is to say “ quartz is obviously the very best movement” Then show them your micky mouse watch. See how their noses turn up and they bring out stakes and bunches if garlic!😂 Personally, I love the tactile nature of watches at all price points but don’t call myself a collector. I have 6 or 7. These days I find it such a difficult thing to chose or justify another and do need to balance the sensibility of being tempted with supporting a family. Would love a Christopher ward chiming watch but even that is beyond means, so I admire them rather than be envious.
Pretty much spot on! I think i was guilty of being a reverse watch snob....i just figured what's the point as i'll never own a high end one. Strangely though, i know quite a lot about lamborghinis (also never own one), so the luxury watch thing doesnt actually make sense. I am going to learn more in the future! Good video. Keep up the good work.
Aren't luxury goods primarily based on serving and providing wealthy people with confirmational status objects, products and bling...that enable owners to then flaunt their wealth, perceived taste, status and position. By simply creating things that the majority of humam can never have or afford or funnily want. So of course there is a level of snobbery and one-up-manship implied about owning such objects..even between those who own and have many of them.
The fact that you are even making this video proves you yourself are a snob. People can form whatever opinion they want. Just because you disagree with their opinion doesn't mean they are a snob. The fact that you try to disavow other's opinion and first amendment right as snobbery makes you, in fact, the ultimate snob because it is like you saying only your opinion is right and those who disagree with you are wrong and therefore, are automatically considered as "snobs". The Pontiff is a "snob" by your standards but he makes great points that the very watches you recommend are shitter watches that are made in China but have "Swiss Made" on the dial and don't hold their value. For people who buy, for example, a Squale that watch is total garbage. The brand has no real history other than the one you invent, the movement and case is sourced from China and their watches are wayyyyy overpriced for what you're getting, but yet you sell them on the idea that those watches have value and hold their value like a Rolex does and because you are the most watched and subscribed to watch channel then you must know best right? They are total dogshit and frankly speaking should be avoided at all costs. Sorry but to be perfectly honest, you misdirect people who are just starting out in the hobby by telling them to buy these absolute hot steaming piles of trash instead of saving up and buying watches from brands with real history and real movements that aren't 99.9% made in china dogshit watches with crap movements. It's unfortunate because you're the biggest watch channel on RU-vid and yet you give people absolutely horrible advice. Also you're a terrible person for literally using Federico and Christian while you were sick and then cutting them out completely and manipulating your audience like you do with these trash videos telling anyone with a dissenting point of view from yours is a watch snob. BE BETTER!
Excellent video, thanks TGV and Hugo. I was going to wear my Submariner when I go to Dubai on Saturday but fancied my Casio G5600 instead for sentimental reasons. You’ve helped me decide - Casio it is 👍
Great book to read, which I'm sure you have, but 'Longitude' had me gripped from start to finish. Very much speaks to the 'Horology' you reference. Great and interesting material in your videos as always Mr T, thought provoking, and agree completely about the definition of a gent. As in The Bards Henry IV, and the example of nobility, at Agincourt, being found in the Archer who defended his injured horse with his life. And I believe that one of the pillars of 'noblesse oblige' is understatement.
I really like quartz watches, and I can't understand why they seem to be the subject of such scorn by people who want to spend more money to get less acccuracy. I love computers and electronics so maybe my sphere of enthusiasm is biased towards these, but it does seem obvious to me that the reorientation of the Swiss watch industry towards mechanical watches is a retreat into the cult that if it is difficult to own and performs worse it must be better, like vinyl records or tube ampliofiers.
I get more compliments on my Islander watch then my Rolex. I love them both for different reasons. I really hate when someone mentions my Rolex as an investment or suggest I'll sell it. You're right, it's such a snob thing to do. I got each because I love them and wear them as art
I had a conversation with a watch snob recently who was unseasonably mad that oris offered a bronze watch, I pointed out that it's a niche watch for customers with a more niche interest He then proceeded to state that people who had interests different from his own "weren't wired right" and likened them to those with major mental illness, I mentioned that he had beats studios on in his profile pic, beats being headphones that generally underperform when compared to other headphones in the same or even lower price brackets, he then got mad and after a little conversation about headphones mentioned that he purchased beats on the basis of noise cancelation, comfort and cosmetics as opposed to their primary function of playing audio, I pointed out that buying headphones based on individual preference instead of their primary function is hypocritical to his initial point he made about watches he then either blocked me or deleted his comment, Basically my point is that watch snobbery is often illogical, hypocritical and extends to more than just watches be it cars, headphones clothes, the people they associate with, it's not about what you own, like or can afford it's usually just a way for them to feel like they're better than those who don't have the same tastes or money as them.
I was wondering if you could possibly make a video on iconic Citizen watches. I feel like no one every speaks of them and you always seem to have good things to say about them. Also I love the points you made in this video.
I want one since I’ve learned about it... but my financial situation is so dire that I need two things to happen first 1 - I need to start playing the lottery 2 - I need to win the lottery ...but I’m very mechanical/automatic and there are many watches I would buy first...
I can’t afford a Rolex, Patek, Vacheron, Omega, etc. I have 4 watches, a Casio Duro, Casio Edifice 106, an edifice S550 and a Nautica. I just value them not because of money but because my dad gave them to me and because I like how they look. That simple. I don’t care about how expensive it is I just want something I can like and afford
Someone asked if my vintage TAG Heuer was an Armani...my returned comment run along the lines of taking my arm off with a bread knife Luckily the number of times I was asked if it was a Rolex outweighs that dozen times over
Thank You Sir!!! This video is the best explanation of a watch snob! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I only have G-Shocks in my collection, but you, Federico talks watches, and a few other channels made me appreciate luxury brands all the way down to the cheapest brands! I'm still looking for my entry level luxury watch. I'm thinking about a seiko.
There are two things In this world I can’t stand. Those who look down on those who can’t afford expensive watches or look down upon others for the watches they chose to have. And Apple watches and the people who buy them.
Will Harris Apple watches aren’t affordable. They’re disposable pieces of tech you have to renew every other year otherwise your battery dies in less than a work day
Always remember, the man maketh the watch. Not the other way around. Unless its a Vincero/MVMT/Filipo Loretti/Daniel Wellington, in which case you ought to be ashamed for supporting an outright scam.
Very well done, TGV. I think this is the best Hugo Mountbatten intro/episode yet. We really see his personality shine here. And you could tell that a lot of thought and work went into this. Kudos. Double Like.
No. 1, i did that for a long time but with japanese watches, only swiss for me baby. Now i write this with my ny0040 in my wrist and feeling guilty of not trying it before (maybe it was not my time). 2. No (in watch terms, i am latin, in our countries in language there is always some snobbery / classism). 3- When i was young. Now i want a JLC atmos or a Jawaco for my desk (there is a greater Seiko, but the other two are easier to obtain here). 4- Again, when i was a kid. Only tag heuer, that was the brand to have here. Now i prefer a nice g shock or my citizen. 5- I have lost so much money with watches i just enjoy now (almost 40 so time brings experience). 6- again number 1. Actually now i like the movement more that the watch. Ultimately it is all about frequencies for me. 7- that has never happened to me. A Langüe, Patek or czapek, all day long baby. 8- Never, except for the people that are obtuse with cheap watches. I get it, a casio FW is good, but it does not cure cancer. Stop the praying!!! And that guy who likes the leopard daytona or the one that post malone bought. 9- That one is weird. I never got it, at least not in watches. In the rest of life, just realistic. 10. don't like them, but i respect them. I would not buy an expensive homage (maybe an invicta, other than that no) but to everyone its own. .... YOU MISSED A BIG ONE, discard quartz watches. I have never have that one, they have their value
This video contains TRUTH. We live in a day when Google watch is outselling the ENTIRE watch brands. Let's keep it civil between watch enthusiasts, it's good for the hobby and the watch community
This is actually a very good video, the one worth recommending to anyone even remotely interested in watches. I don't necessarily agree with everything mentioned, especially when it comes to homage watches (that I consider almost as the fake watches and personally would never wear) , but I agree to disagree on that point. Thums up for the entire video!
TGV, thanks very much for this video. I have thus far avoided the 10 signs and tried to nurture friends who are making their first steps into watches with enthusiasm and, hopefully, good advice... including putting in a plug for your videos! ;-) Keep up the good work!
I am eternally grateful, not only for the plug, but most importantly knowing there are true gents like you in the Gentry! It makes it all worth it, thank you Jeffery, Onwards and upwards. Best regards, TGV
Great video, and I couldn't agree with you more! I just recently came across your channel and I absolutely love what you do. I've been watching your videos religiously nonstop and you have absolutely inspired me, not only for the love of watches, but also for loving who I am as a person and striving to do better things in my life to lead a happier healthier life as well. I applaud you for your honesty, kindness, and your strength while going through the health challenges you've endured throughout your life. I truly consider you being a fantastic role model for many many people out there who struggle with everyday life obstacles. So I just wanted to say thank you, and I look forward to your next video. Stay well my friend! 🙏
TGV, you’re my hero man. Such great content. You strive (and seem to succeed greatly) to be an extraordinary human being and you share and inspire that endeavor in others. In a world of reality shows that showcase bad behavior and lack of class, you stand above, diplomatically reminding us to behave as gentlemen. Thank you for the true light you bring to RU-vid and the greater community.
He is back, love it. Watch snobs are a virus in horology, very contages lol I have a humble collection but I bought it with my heart and love for the horology, of course I would like luxury watches on my collection, must be patient
“ watch snobs” AKA 90% of Rolex owners. I won a Submariner and a Date just, however i rather wear my Snowflake, Seamaster or Navitimer because they’re better watches in my eyes. I wear my watches to impress myself not others!
Great content. Reverse snobbery is a bigger issue than watch snobbery I find out on the West Coast. 1) Those who believe entry level watches are on par with watches that are of haute horology and then disrespect those that have higher-end watches because they consider it to be a waste of money. I find that most collectors that have Patek's, FP Journe, or JLC, also have Seiko's, Swatch, Timex and lower-end watches as part of a well balanced collection. In fact, I've never met a high-end collector that thinks lesser of inexpensive watches. I have met many people who buy their first Rolex that fit the image of watch snobbery and do look down on collectors with inexpensive watches. 2) The issue I have with inexpensive watches is that MOST of these watches lack a story or even worst - have manufactured stories. It's okay to enjoy an inexpensive watch, but it is important not to manufacture a story or fake historical references. 3) Watches that call themselves Swiss when manufactured elsewhere. 4 Quartz Snobs - There are many very nice quartz watches out there - FP Journe Elegante, Grand Seiko Quartz, Breitling Emergnecy etc.).
So true about Quartz too, I think I did a video just on that alone, so true! Balance is so important in a collection, excellent point too. As for lack of story, well, true too, but everyone has to start somewhere. Heopfully, brands like Lorier, Hemel and Dan Henry blaze the trail in bringing cool designs and value to make up for it. Thank you Paul, loved hearing your feedback. Best regards, TGV
I was going to make a video on my channel on this because I'm on the forums alot and I see it daily. one example is one guy posted up his new rolex. i forgot what it was. anyways people commented and one guy said "ur lucky i cant even get on a list been to 50 AD's" i said, "it sucks rolex doesn't want your money, try Omega" and he said "sorry its rolex or higher for me" and i said "thats a shame" then some other guy commented and he went off on him. i didnt read it or care enough to go through it but i knew it i knew it i knew it that he was like that. too ez
Escapement & Watch walked into an AD for many brands and inside was a watch group that had the word horology in their name. They asked me to join and if I heard about the meetup on the forums. I said no I just came to browse. They asked me to stay but everyone else that came they asked what was on their wrist but you could tell right away not being up close what luxurywatch everyone was wearing. I was wearing my auto Timex. Their whole conversation before I couldn’t stand more than an hour and left was about John Mayer and his Rolex watches that they want and doing ten around flights just to go toADs that called them up saying to come collect a watch as they were next on the list. Pateks, APs, Rolex, moser-_- . They were clearly snobs as most of them were losers, CEOs or getting paid 7 figures and didn’t even own entry or even mid tier brands. Only one or two started collect more than ten years ago so had humble beginnings
Amazing video! It‘s so good to „take a shower in positive words“ and to be reminded that it’s all about the fun WE get from the watches WE own/want. This video shows what social media can/should be: a place for exchange of opinions and experiences but in a positive or constructive manner and not an „echo chamber“ for negative thoughts and hatred. Greetings from Germany
