Traveled through Canada years ago, visiting from the US. Stopped at a small hotel, checked in, and my parents asked the desk clerk for a nice place to eat since it was their anniversary. He suggested an Italian place a few km away, so that's where they went. During the meal the server asked what we were driving, which was a little weird, but whatever. Finished the meal and they brought out a special dessert and wished them a happy anniversary. Complete surprise since it was never mentioned. Turns out the hotel clerk called and told them what we were driving and that it was their anniversary. Who does that? Above and beyond for sure.

My daughter (who was 13 at the time) and I, met a group of Canadians, here in the U.S., in Queen Creek, Arizona to be exact. We were at a neighborhood pool that I managed for work. They asked us if we wanted to join them in the hot tub. I couldn't bc I was on duty. My daughter didn't want to get in without a bathing suit, which we didn't have for her at that time. Well the Canadian ladies showed up again the next day with a gift of 6 different bathing suits for her! That was SO thoughtful. I couldn't believe it or thank them enough!

I used to live on the US-Canada border and I have travel through Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. I also lived and worked in Mexico for 16 months. I have been to Europe and South America as well. During all my travels, I have met a ton of great people, but many foreigners claim to know a lot about America. In reality though, most only knew New York, Miami, Detroit, Chicago and LA. Outside these large cities their knowledge has been very limited. Canadians tend know more about the US than other nationalities, but they are not experts. Europeans seem to believe they know the most about America but they are dead wrong most of the time. I have had many conversations with Europeans who believed that they could travel to NY, LA and Miami in 10 days. This could only happen if a person never stopped driving during the entire trip. The US will always be misunderstood by others. This is due to the misinformed global media, which paints Americans as uneducated and unkind.

Canada used to have the Imperial system (miles, Fahrenheit, pounds etc) but it changed (I don't know when exactly). However, older Canadians are still used to the Imperial system and are familiar with speeds in miles or temperatures in Fahrenheit. Younger Canadians who go to the US frequently also are familiar with both systems. Also, there are remnants of the Imperial system in Canada to this day. For example, Canadians will use the Imperial system to refer to weight and height. Amanda weighs 350 pounds (she's a heavy cookie). Amanda is 5 feet tall (She's short too).

So true about the center of the Universe. As for the culture, I have exposed my daughter since she was a baby to different cinema, art, literature, etc from all over the world so she would not have only American standards as a reference. When I look at American cinema, of course, some is very good but I have found that so many movies are the same hash being served time and time again. They just change actors, change the city but basically the same storyline. Often Foreign cinema is more original, artistic and memorable. Same goes for the music. Anyways we are blessed to be Canadians.

Thanks to Tommy Douglas (Kiefer Sutherland's grandfather) we have universal health care in Canada. Not all provinces cover the same things, though I believe prenatal care, childbirth, and hospital stays related to giving birth, Cataract surgery, lumpectomy, knee and hip replacement surgery, some oral surgeries, x-rays, lab tests and other medically necessary services are covered. In Manitoba things like wrist splints and chiropractic services are partially covered while in some provinces they are not. Massage and Physio are not covered in Manitoba unless you have private insurance. Physio may be covered if you are receiving the treatment in the hospital. Unfortunately more and more private practices are opening in Canada which is leading more and more to a two-tiered system. They seem to have been "okayed" by both the conservative and liberal governments at different times in different provinces. In Manitoba there is only one company left (an American company) that does all of the lab testing - it became a monopoly under pallister.

Canadians could say that they are from the United Provinces and Territories of Canada? I don’t know how those chose the name, United States of America. Originally it was the Confederate States of America, until the current constitution was ratified in 1789.

Americans tend to forget that that Canadians can be and are proud of their country and are proud that Canada is not the United States. When pushed, Canadians are as nationalistic as Americans. Americans tend to think Canada is an extension of themselves and treat Canada as if it’s another state. I work for the Federal Government (the big one). It is amazing to me the number of co- workers who think Canada is a State if the United States or a territory of the United States, like Puerto Rico. many times have I heard Americans say to one another Canada is just like the United States. “Every thing is the same”.

Excellent video! As an American and someone who enjoys international travel, I wished we used the metric system and Celsius. And as for healthcare, it’s ridiculous that we haven’t figured out a better solution by now. We’ve spent over $5,000 WITH health insurance recently when my son fractured his femur. 😩 Canada is looking very attractive right now... I have heard inter-country air travel is expensive in Canada. Is this true? It is nice to be able to fly across most of the US for $300 or less. (Of course that doesn’t outweigh the sky high health insurance costs.) I would also add that Canadians (and Europeans) value cultural travel experiences, gap years, and that sort of thing more than Americans. I think, generally speaking, that Americans would be less egotistical and prejudiced if they traveled to other countries and not just vacationed at a resort.

Spot on. People from the US suffer from imperial arrogance. They think they are better and that they live in the best country--without knowing much about the world. I am born and bred in the US but my ancestry is Mexican. I will never be considered "American" although I certainly am since I was born in the Americas and my ancestry is American. Yes, the country is divided on some of these attitudes. However, it is the assumption in schools, media, politics and even much of culture. If I were to say each country has their strengths and weaknesses, many would scream "Love it or leave it!" or "Go back to where you come from!" (Sound familiar?), not understanding that my indigenous roots make me more authentically American than they are. Imperialist attitudes and racism are foundational to the US psyche, no matter to what degree of backwardness,. There are good folks that have a more enlightened perspective. But the core and often unconscious assumption in this often parochial society is that this country is the best even with pig Trump at the helm. What a joke.

Welll the basic difference is of the english used in the two countries. All the common wealth countries (which were british colonies in the past) use UK english. United States has US english. Both have different dictionaries. For instance, A lift (UK) is called as an elevator in US. A currency note in UK is called as a Bill in US. A Taxi (UK) is called as Cab in US. "Colour" is UK, "Color" is US, "Favourite" is UK, "Favorite" is US english.

First off, it’s a really dark and embarrassing time in American history. We are a super massive country with 325 million people. I travel to France every year with my family for vacation. I also have traveled to Australia many times. I know the world does not revolve around us . Our healthcare sucks unless you are a millionaire . I have insurance and I’m scared to go to a doctor for anything because it may still cost more than what I spend on my vacations. Sad, but true. I know Canada is a lovely place. I have a friend in Montréal and as soon as the border opens back up one day, I’d like to visit. I don’t know how you survive winters. How do you get use to living in snow and ice?

Regarding your center of the universe comment, I’ve been in situations where I’ve asked non Americans certain questions (like if they knew about the state of Wyoming) and they’d get super bothered by the fact that I assumed they were ignorant. I think people just like to hate on Americans regardless of what we do. I’ve traveled with Canadians, Brits, and Australians, and I always get bombarded with uncalled for questions just because I’m American. Most Americans I’ve traveled with have never once complained about locals not speaking English, but I’ve seen it so many times with Canadians. Treatment towards Americans can be unfair sometimes.
