It's often hard to actually fill a sketchbook when we buy one. Definitely one of those "easier said than done" activities. Here are 10 ways I filled my sketchbook. I found these methods incredibly helpful, so I hope they help you too!
You're welcome to draw with me as I talk about various sketchbook ideas. Most of these are illustrations, so whether you're just starting out or you've been doing art for a while... you're in the right place! All art is good art! :)

I usually do the same thing. I do ALL my detailed illustrations in there. I never realized that I can just draw anything it's a sketchbook. Buy I was saying this cause I totally connect to that

I kid you not, I watched about 4 different artists sketchbook tours and their advice on sketchbooks, I thought I was done but you uploaded just now and I HAD to watch it! I just finished now, and it was a great watch :) I've been pushing myself to draw and paint and do what I want in my sketchbooks more, its really freeing. I even said to myself "wow, I'm actually having fun painting!" which is sadly something I haven't felt until I started doing what I wanted in my sketchbooks.

YOU. ARE. MY. MUSE!!! I'm SOOOO happy that I found you on RU-vid! I have been a pencil artist ALL my life, but for the past 12 years I've been in an artist block (?), slump? I dunno. But I 100% know that part of my block was what other people would think of my art, even if NO ONE saw it! It would get so bad that my art was suffering from the constant criticism that I was giving myself, I wasn't happy drawing anymore. Lately, I've been trying to start over in my art. i.e. coloring books and small sketch books. But after watching this video and listening to you say just do art for you, I think I can jump back into my art again and be happy. Thank you for making this video and all the videos you have made and are going to make! You're a wonderful person!

Soooo..I’m not that good at art like painting using acrylic or oils or even water colour but I love to do sort of cartoony people in my sketch book and my friend(who is very good at art) looked threw it she said that art wasn’t just about drawing that that I should learn to do proper art which got me very angry and I ripped all my pages out so I bought a new sketch book and I tried to paint but it wasn’t working for me so I went to RU-vid and I clicked on some of your videos and I and I’ve filled so many of my pages up with things I like and I feel not preacherd to do so thanks for making very helpful videos that inspire new artists

That's not nice art is a way to Express your self some people are perfectionists and what everything perfect but that's not for everybody I love sketching random things and painting things that come to my head they might not be super amazing to most but its mostly about how u feel about ur art how it makes u feel etc..

I agree whole-heartedly that a sketchbook is for whatever the artist wants to do. Especially when they are so much more affordable than looseleaf professional grade papers and keeps all the art in one place. Watching your sketchbook videos always make me feel so much happier. I finally felt inspired to go back and fill in some that I haven't had the motivation to touch in ages. Thank you for being an inspiration for others to just do their own thing.

Uh in school I always doodle in the margins on the paper and it comes out sooo good but when I try to do the same doodle in my sketch book it comes out ugly. My mom so let me get a sketch book because my brother said he wanted a coloring book that was 14 dollars and now she won’t let me get one. I have to draw on line paper of my school notebook and I am running out of pages. I can’t even get one for Christmas

I’m so sorry! That’s so upsetting. Do you have a printer at your house? If so, you can take a few pages of printer paper, fold them in half, staple them, and have your own homemade sketchbook. No matter what you draw on though, I bet your art is beautiful. I wish I could just teleport a sketchbook to you. Never give up! 💜

I hope you got a sketchbook by now but I used to doodle in the margins a lot, so I cut the doodles out and stick them in my sketchbook. I used to use the covers of notebooks too, if you are very careful you can split the cardboard in half with a thin ruler / envelope opener and use that as heavy weight paper. I also used the beige folder things that came inside certain notebooks since they are actually super large sheets of paper that have been folded to create pockets. Other things you can use to make a sketchbook from scratch includes tissue boxes, shoe boxes, junk mail and junk mail envelopes, news paper, paper towels, packaging paper, etc. If you can get a matte type white paint you can paint over those things for a white surface. I see a lot of people using old book pages too. Even lined paper is nice since it creates a neat effect. Then just put all the sheets together and you have a 1 of a kind sketchbook to work with. Good art is good regardless of the paper you use :) you can also use random objects and scrap wood /fabric/ metal as a painting surface, then it becomes a true project. Good luck! 🍀

the old masters had scrappy sketchbooks as well, but it's barely shown but it is true: sketches, doodles, weird colour ideas.... so that says that it's not about a perfect image.

I sometimes don't draw in my sketchbook for awhile and want to start drawing again. What I do is put on the soundtrack to a musical, and then draw in my sketchbook until it's over. Sometimes I also challenge myself like when I do this. For example, when these 2 songs are over, this page needs to be done. Or like I work on a certain sketch for the second verse and chorus and stuff like that. I find that doing this really helps me because I have more fun doing this. It allows me to jam out to some bops, get some of my competitive energy out, and of course DRAW.

Oh, same on the fiddling xd I just make some random thinks and then I see something in it and draw over it and stuffs. Especially during classes. I'm anxious a lot otherwise if I can't draw during stressful times or boring times. I got a small sketchbook and like you do, I stick some old work in it inbetween the newer work, some napkins with deep colours, whatever moves my boat I guess and it's funny to hear with keeping your sketchbook near. I always do that. XD I take them with me when I sit down to always stare at it and into it every second and it helps to get me inspired or want me to fill it or edit it.

Things that help me: Stick stuff in. -I don't like the blank spaces in between so I'll stick post it notes, drawings that I did on scrap paper throughout the day, things I found, washi tape, stickers, etc Set goals/do challenges -i started the 100 heads challenge and I am definitely filling it more now Interactive stuff -so this sounds weird but like sticking little flaps with hidden things under, cutting out "windows" in pages to peep through at the next page, water fall cards or a mini book. I find it adds some fun and interest, and it's cool to see when you look back on them Colour -sketching in coloured pencil, putting a wash of colour on the entire page, blocking in your favourite drawing on the spread in one solid colour, highlighting the hair or eyes or whatever with the same colour, I find it fills empty space, draws your eye to a certain area, adds more interest and fun These might not work for you, these are just things I do to make my sketchbook more enjoyable for me

For me, I have real difficulty with finishing full pieces, I have a bad tendency of starting sketches then moving onto another and never finishing it. So doing full, completed pieces is part of my sketchbook practice because my sketchbook is where I develop myself and my art.

How is anyone going to chew you out about what you decide to put into your own book? Do art how it pleases you. I find art so extremely relaxing and a piece of finished art is pleasing to me. I have peppered in ideas as well. Whatever pleases you at that time. You are very talented and original. I love watching what you come up with and your use of color. I still struggle with watercolor, so I also learn a lot watching. I even watch art when I am relaxing, so thank you for your contribution to my relaxation heehee :)

I ABSOLUTELY agree with you on the point you made about not doing a completed piece in your sketchbook. I hear so many saying that you shouldn't. I've always thought WHY NOT?!? I paid a decent amount of money for a really nice, decently weighted paper, sketchbook and some are telling me not to really use it? makes no sense to me. if you got a super lightweight sketchbook fine, use it for sketching, but if you got a good weighted, watercolor or mixed media paper, and it's a great quality book, then why waste it on just light sketches or unfinished pieces? and I also think you're right in the fact that we should let society tell us what to do with OUR stuff, our sketchbooks really are "our" place and we should never let society dictate what we do with it. It kinda defeats the purpose of being an artist if we can't be creative because of what society says. So Good for you and keep it up!!

What I usually do is while I’m drawing I play music and draw what I’m thinking of or watch tv and draw the random simple things I see, hope that helps!

I have so many sketchbooks that I bought but I have yet to completely fill any of them. This is so helpful, so thank you for posting this video! By the way your art is awesome! I especially love that last piece you did with the purple background and white designs :)
