10 Ways To Improve Your Tennis Alone - Tennis Lesson
Improving your tennis game often involves having a tennis partner, a tennis coach or someone to feed you tennis balls. However, there are many ways you can improve your tennis alone, with the help of nobody. We all want to improve our tennis but often we rely on other people to actually get out on the tennis court to work on our games. No more excuses! In this free tennis lesson, coach Simon Konov will show you 10 ways to improve your tennis alone, so you'll have plenty of ways to get better and start defeating your competition.
10 Ways To Improve Your Tennis Alone:
Method One - Tennis Serve Drills. This doesn't mean just hitting hundreds of serves with no goal or purpose in mind. This means going out on the tennis court with focus, using drills that will help you improve the exact aspect of your tennis serve that you want to improve. This could be working on your serve consistency and using drills that will help you to focus on that.
Method Two - Tennis Footwork Drills. We all know how important it is to have good tennis footwork and movement, yet how often do you work on your footwork patterns? How often do you train your split step, your recovery steps, or a specific pattern that you need to improve? There are hundreds of tennis footwork drills and we should all be training our footwork alone, whenever we can.
Method Three - Self-Feeding Drills. This is simply where you drop feed balls to yourself, on the spot, or slightly away from your body, so you work on your technique, accuracy and consistency. There are many different drills you can do with self-feeding and they are a great tool to improve your tennis alone.
Method Four - Serve Plus One. When it comes to tennis tactics and strategy for singles players, the serve plus one patterns are number one. There are over 12 main serve plus one patterns of play and to work on and improve them alone, you can simply hit your serve to your intended target, then drop feed yourself the return you would expect and hit the first shot into your go to play. Another great way to improve your tennis alone.
Method Five - Tennis Coordination Drills. Many tennis players neglect working on and improving their coordination. The pros know how important coordination is for tennis, and most of them will do a few drills daily to work on and improve it. This could be something as simple as catching a tennis ball on the spot, or bouncing one ball off the ground while dribbling another one. Another great way to improve your tennis alone.
Method Six - Shadow Swings. There are a few different ways you can use shadow swings to improve your tennis, the first one is to simply focus on your tennis technique, this could be your backhand. You would simply shadow your tennis backhand over and over again, focusing on exactly what you want to do with your backhand stroke. Secondly, you could focus on creating good racket head speed and you would simply swing the racket as fast as you can, whilst maintaining good form, and listen to the sound of your swing. Thirdly, you could focus more on your footwork and add a shadow swing to compliment the drill.
Method Seven - Tennis Ball Machine Drills. This method will require a ball machine but if you have access to one, there are so many great ways you can use it to improve your game.
Method Eight - Tennis Wall Drills. This doesn't have to be linked to a tennis court, it could be in your garden, or in a park. Where ever you can find a wall you can use, there are many drills you can do alone to imrpove your tennis.
Method Nine - Tennis Rebound Net. This is a great tool to have set up in your garden or driveway, it doesn't require a massive amount of space and you can hit hundreds of balls in a short amount of time. The best drills you can do on one of these is volley drills.
Another great way to improve your tennis alone.
Method Ten - Tennis Fitness. This doesn't mean going to the gym and spending hours lifting weights, this could be as simple as doing home workouts, using your own body weight or doing interval sprints in your garden.

Hi guys - Thank you for keeping tennis 'alive' during the lockdown. I have been taking your drills & lessons to heart and I built a 12 month plan to concentrate on 1 element per month, and every 3 months I have a review to put it all together. It has been really helpful and I have a structure for improvement. (That Novak guy had better be ready...😆) FYI - I have been using the Wilson Triniti balls against the backboard and they last until there's no cover left on them. They don't lose their bounce and they have longevity.

Hey Simon! Really love the channel, you guys always do a great job! I've been away from the courts for several years and your channel made me go practice during this difficult time. Found a wall in my garage building that would do the deal and I've been practicing at least 4 times a week. One thing I've been struggling with is a natural follow-through. I noticed that I either do a small movement - not going all the way to the chin -to-shoulder position - or when trying to correct it I find my self forcing the movement and using too much of an arm driving motion, instead of a natural release of the core rotation. Any tips? Thanks so much for all the information!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 года назад
Hi Thiago Try to focus on coiling and then uncoiling on the way forward, allowing your hitting shoulder to open up towards the net fully, even finish the swing with the shoulder facing the net. This will help the follow through be more relaxed. All the best Simon

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks a lot Simon. Are there any training drills to improve accuracy of strokes? Keep the speed n power, but also hit where you want the ball to hit, for both rally shots and small / drop shots. I often have much harder time to hit good drop shots - my drop shots too big or too high that opponent can still reach. Another hard thing for me is decision on coming to the net or not, how to build an opportunity that I could come to the net and finish the point, any training drills for coming to the net?

Thanks Simon. Those look really sweet :) I love the footwork drills. I have a question - if you self feed a ball to yourself after a serve - how can you make the ball would go similar (rotation, speed, direction) as a return of serve you would likely to play? Self feed looks to me more like chopped return then like a lifted. Thank you very much, take care. :)
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 года назад
Hi Jan You won't be able to self-feed the ball in a similar way that an opponent would drive their return, it's more of a drill to focus on the serve, split step and being ready and then hitting a shot into a specific target. All the best Simon

I'm having trouble keeping up with tennis practice after starting college online; roughly 3 hours of Zoom meetings spread through the day keep me tethered inside it seems. Changed my perspective on how easy practice can be. Thank you bro

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I absolutely agree. Personally I found the quick workout to be a game changer, maybe a video on quick ways to improve your tennis? I'm not certain, but stuff like just tossing a ball at home has helped me improve my toss immensely. Perhaps a video on how to beat the consistency bug? Everyone has it, and we all dislike it, maybe a video on how to focus and stay in points longer would help. Either way I'll tune in. Best of luck

Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons you have probably done a video on this but maybe something on slight variations on volley grips and the advantages/disadvantages of each, I’m having the chopper or handshake grip drilled into me but when I practice I seem to naturally alter it slightly subconsciously which I get told off for haha eg backhand slipping so that the the knuckle on my index finger sits on the 2nd bevel instead of the 3rd if that makes sense, I do it with slicing too only a very subtle change but happens naturally. I’m an ex cricketer too so not sure if the habits of gripping a cricket bat are engrained in me (left handed batsman but right handed tennis with a single hand back hand) 🤷‍♂️

This happened to me - and many others - even the Pro's are affected by big breaks. It's because you have lost your 'timing' due to such a long break. It will come back - but you have to get back to hitting regularly. Doing drills with a ball machine helps - it certainly did for me after an injury break. A coach (like Simon...if u can afford him...lol) may also be able to speed up the results. Hope that helps.

A few comments on your tutorial, which is the best I can think of when there's no hitting partner available. #1 Work on your serve. It's the one shot you have full control on. Do it as often as you can. #2 Footwork. Absolutely. I just wished at that point you would put more emphasis on back and forth footwork (way more difficult) than sideways footwork. #3 Brilliant. Self feeding. Something I never thought of. Intentionally dropping the ball too far away ahead/too far behind and then dealing with it. Fabulous exercise. #4 ?!?! #5 I am skeptical about managing two balls at the same time. I will give it a try though. #6 Shadow swings. Watching yourself in a mirror, while the images are inverted, is something I never thought of. Now, even better, having a tripod and a recording camera showing you what you're actually doing is even better. I never saw what I looked like swinging at a ball. Now I can. #7 and #8 aren't available. #9 I didn't know those things existed. They look a bit expensive. I'll see if I can afford one.

If we're talking about a lower ranked player who competes at futures events etc and makes almost nothing in prize money, it's possible. If we're talking about ATP pro playing big events, it's unlikely. 2. How athletic are you already? Have you played other sports to a high level. If you have, then it will be much easier for you to reach a good level in tennis. If you're just starting out sport, not only do you need to develop your tennis skills, but also become an athlete. That's two jobs in one. 3. How much can you spend on coaching and travelling to tournaments?
