Ahhhhh, y'all! There are so many good recommendations in the comments that are making me so giddy and warming my heart! YASSSSS ECO CREW!!! Dang I'm feeling v inspired to take my "eco-habits" to the next level. Thank you to everyone for caring about your impact, and doing little acts of kindness for mama earth (and simultaneously saving that $$$ dough, am I right??)! And thank you for being here in this little corner of the internets. I dunno what I did to deserve that. (And I'll stop myself here with the cheesy-ness lol shedding a quick tear here tho) I hope you're having a scrumptious, healthy and happy quarantine day! Dude, I love the videos! Btw, have you ever heard of the website freecycle.org? It seems like a very similar thing to Buy nothing, there are no buy nothing groups in my area, but there is always tons of stuff on Freecycle!

I don't buy new mascara every 3 months. I use it till it's used up or dries out. My mom is the same. In her 30+ years and in my 10 years of using mascara we have never had eye infections. Then again we also not prone to sickness and are clean. I do the bathroom toilet paper thing too. I switched to a refillable deodorant but it doesn't work well (like at all) so I shower twice a day just to not smell like bad BO. Kind of defeats the purpose of mindfulness in the product choice (less plastic) if I have to use more water.

I have a betta fish whose water needs to be changed weekly so I collect all his dirty fish water and give it to my plants! My plants love it because his dirty water has lots of great fertilizing agents in it!

I spent years trying to get plants outside my house to grow and nothing! We recently got a fish tank about 6 months ago and started using the tank water to water the plants. My plants have almost doubled in size!

I like to freeze my old coffee in ice cube trays then when I want an iced coffee, plop in some coffee cubes, pour fresh coffee overtop. BAM iced coffee without being watered down!

I do this too! I make ice cubes with some of it, then put the rest in the fridge so I'm using the cold stuff WITH coffee cubes to make ice coffee. Even the last drop is potent and never watered down. It's the best!

Regarding the toilet paper... if you smoosh the roll so that it is oblong before you put it on the roll holder, it doesn’t spin freely and everyone in the house uses less 😃

omg interesting!! Such a good hack! I honestly should do that for the boys I live with... I literally don't know how they go through so much tp in their bathroom, it boggles my mind! This seems like an easier swap than me continuing to nag them without any change haha 💛

The oldest piece of clothing I inherited is over 50 years old and I still wear it all the time. Bit morbid but when my grandad died I went through his clothes too and picked out what I liked so everything didn't go to landfill. He had a great sock collection

I have t-shirts from when I was 12 so around 6 years ago. If it still fots and is in good condition, why not? Also bought 2nd hand items that are probably much older than me but still are in mint condition. They just have to be cared for:)

I use clothes from my teens all the time. Even the one's that have holes or teared i use them as rags, to clean dust stuff like that. Some i made into loofahs and stove mittens.

My mom taught me to iron tissue paper from gifts and reuse the tissue paper and gift bag. I'm pretty sure we have used the same boxes and bags for Christmas for years.

Love this! Years ago I challenged my family to not purchase any new gift wrap, and if you run out then just get creative - use newspaper or anything else you can find. Crazy enough, we're still going strong without purchasing anything new (and of course reusing bags, boxes, bows, tissue and sometimes even wrapping paper). Love the tip about ironing tissue paper!

We also reuse ribbons, bows, tissue paper, giftwrap, gift bags, gift boxes, shipping boxes, paper shopping bags like from Nordstrom or Macy’s/etc, and sometimes newspaper for wrapping gifts. I’ve never had to buy wrapping paper! Also, people usually put boxes of wrapping paper and Holiday/Christmas decor stuff out in yard sales and I can usually find huge boxes of stuff like this for $1-$3. Same with old spice jars at yard sales! I decked out my home spice collection with this (looked new) set of spices on a spice rack.

I'm actually doing a lot of these things. Additional things that I do: I water my plants with the water I used to boil potatoes. When I print something at work and need to cut it, I keep the small parts to write down my shopping list. And when I don't like the snacks I bought, I just bring them to work and put them on the kitchen table with a note 'I bought some snacks to share' (don't tell it my coworkers 😁) Hope my English wasn't too bad. Your English is very good! As someone who is practicing Spanish, I encourage native Spanish speakers to correct me if I’m wrong, but in your parenthesis “(don’t tell it my coworkers)” should actually be (don’t tell my coworkers). No need to put “it” because it is understood ;). Again your English is great keep it up bud!!!♥️

these are some very interesting ideas! I also use cooking water for my plants and when someone in my house takes a bath (wich is very rare) I tell them to let the water sit and I put my plants in the tub. greetings from belgium :-)

if im with a friend and their clothes rips or something and theyre like darn its ruined, if i see them later i ask if i can use it for scrap fabric. most of the time they say yes and later on i can surprise them with a small bag or utensil holder or something so they still can use it. i find a lot of people are emotionally attatched to their clothes so theyre happy to get more use out of it.

my weirdest thing is probably that i save dryer lint, extra strings, packaging (like bubble mailers mostly), etc and use it to make pillows for my rooster. hes a rescue and has lived inside his whole life, so he has a little bed that i made using an old cardboard box, and then stuff whatever i can find into a piece of scrap fabric as a pillow. they get really gross after a while and you cant really clean it, so they do eventually end up in the trash, but i used to just buy him stuffed animals to sleep on so this is a lot better

@@roxanac.4977 my uncle used to breed chickens, but he was terrible and abused them. so i saved him when he was a chick, and he couldnt go with the rest of my chickens bc we already had too many roosters. it took too long to rehome him, so i got attached and kept him lol. chickens dont pee, so he wears a diaper (you can find them on etsy) inside. you cant exactly train them, but he has learned things. like he knows not to bite, and he only uses his spurs (big sharp claw that will FUCK you UP) on inanimate objects, like his ball. he's my baby lol, i highly recommend rescuing chickens. theyre such good companions!

One small way I save water: I give my dog fresh water every day, instead of dumping any water down the sink she didn't drink I will use it to water my plants.

ah the washing the utensils with only water thing is also very indian. here's how we decide whether we wash it water or soap. theres this concept of jootha (the closest thing i could find in english is ort) so if your saliva or saliva hands have touched the utensils its jootha. i eat from a spoon / plate its jootha. i touch my mouth to the bottle its jootha. so like when you're preparing food you don't go double dipping etc to avoid jootha. we avoid jootha by drinking water without touching you mouth (you tilt your head up drop water from an inch height to your mouth. you could also do the same with spoons ) so if you've just chopped vegetables etc you don't wash the utensils with soap. so the bottle you have'nt touched with your mouth you don't wash and its pretty clean and it never smells untill you touch your mouth to it. tmi but yeah its a very widespread concept here like the oats you soaked it was never jootha so its fine i guess if you don't use soap. we've been doing it for centuaries even in covid and well we don't get sick (edited also if it has oil you wash it )

I do that too! If I wash a plate and there was bread on it and it just has crumbs or a bit of tomato water from sliced tomatoes, I rinse with water. If I cut a cucumber, I rinse the knife with water. If it's has fatty content like sauce or I ate from a spoon, I use soap. Fats and bacteria need soap.

I live in a college town and people ALWAYS will throw perfectly good stuff away at the end of the year! I love dumpster diving! Last year I found a perfectly good desk (and it was a cute white one)! So I took it home!

Our appt block is a lot of students so at the end of the year theres always stuff by the bins. This year there was a tub full of perfectly usable plates and things but half of it still had food on it etc, very gross. Of course I felt compelled to clean it up and take it to a charity shop. The next day a lovely neat clean box of stuff a foreign exchange student had had to leave behind included a photography light and a wooden art box (balsa wood but still) and I figured that was my karmic reward xD

Same! I once found a perfectly good set of pots and pans in a cardboard box by the dumpser at my apartment building. I already had enough pots and pans so I didn’t keep them but I washed and donated them.

I do this with silverware.. like if a knife has butter on it or a spoon has something on and it wasn’t in anyone’s mouth just rinse it off and put it away LMAOOO

Raw flour is a tiny bit risky to eat. It probably wouldn't matter, especially if you had a healthy immune system, but you could potentially contaminate a ready-to-eat food that isn't cooked if you're say, measuring out raw fruit with the same cup that had raw flour the night before.

I save the little sticker that comes on produce ( apples, bananas, etc) and use them to clean up hair. I have long hair and it sheds so those stickers help me keep the bathroom cleaner.

@@leporid257 I don't do that but it would work just fine for 'larger jobs' I just take the small sticker and use it in the bathroom when I comb my hair. That's when the most of it comes out. So I have the sticker to get the strands off my shirt and the counter. Then I can use it to get the ones that fell on the floor.

@@leporid257 I find the banana ones are best. The stickers on apples work fine but not as well. I also save any other sticky tape that comes from other packaging that would be thrown away too.

One time my roommate (who rarely cooks) bought 6 gigantic sweet potatoes and let them sit on the counter for weeks and weeks. One day I noticed the trash was really heavy. There were 6 sweet potatoes with a few sprouts each, all sitting at the bottom of the trash. So I took them out of the trash, peeled them and froze them and I’ve been gradually eating them ever since.

On the hoarding jars front - ask a locally refillary if they will take them for their customers. My local one will take them, sanitize them and offer them to customers for free to try small amounts or if they forgot their jars. Super awesome! I have a bag to drop off once this "slow down" is over. Also, for boxes, I am guilty too, I have a flattened stack of diaper boxes under the bed, but man they come in handy. They are subbing for my reusable bags right now when doing pickups for food from the local farmers. Stay safe. Also, as for cooking - have you heard of residual cooking? They taught it in the great war and depression for saving on cooking fuel, and you turn off your heat source near the end of the cooking, and let the hot pan or pot finishing cooking with the residual heat left. Works really well and saves money - boom, mind blown.

Oh my god, I just realised I do EVERYTHING I laughed about my dad doing. He used to say "just use green soap, all these things you put on your skin are full of chemicals and don't even smell natural" and I would respond smth like " Oh mY gOd DaD I neEd MoIsTuriZer YoU knOw?! ".... some years later and I'm only using bar soaps and make my own body creams. He used to say, "do you need new clothes again ?! Their quality is terrible and who knows what they're made with, it's better to buy one expensive good item than tons of shitty ones" and I would be like "yEah Ok GivE me 100 euros For A tShiRt thEn, I don'T ReaLly HaVe a ChOice" ... now I've learned about the horrors of fast fashion, still wear my college clothes and take good care of them, shop second hand and if I need smth new I'll choose an ethical company, but maybe once a year. I even have a ripped pyjama that I wear, like he used to do. Amazing, I've transformed into my dad lol :')

Haha i've noticed the same process with me turning into my mother!! I used to make fun of her, for only buying organic, biological food and almost none convenience food. A couple years later, guess who is in front row at only buiyng organic, biological food with almost zero plastic wrapping 😂

My family occasionally does a “Swap” where we will all get together with things we no longer want or use, and we lay them out on tables and display them and then we go through and take turns taking items that we want! It’s not so realistic right now with COVID, but I look forward to the day that we can do this again :)

Unless your elderly, weigh 300 pounds or have a weak immune system due to things like HIV or cancer you should spend time with your family. Covid is over hyped and it was and is def used as a control mechanism by politicians.

Ok here's a weird one, thoes green flip lids from Shakey pizza cheese can screw onto a mason jar perfectly so I always keep them and use them for flip lids for beans rice or other dry goods storage.

I save the ricewater from washing rice (I wash my rice 3 times) and use it for washing my hair or my face. It makes my hair super shiny and sleek and I don’t need to use conditioner afterward.

love these tips! i just wanted to add to the note of washing surfaces: if your household has residents with food allergies, washing off counters and dishes and other surfaces with more than just water is absolutely crucial (even in times of non-pandemic).

I put oats, milk whatever else you want in it and shake it up into overnight oats, you can eat cold or heat the following day

I’d take it easy on turning off other people’s night lights. I have a hypnagogic sleep disorder and have multiple confused arousals at night. Without a night light, I can’t recover quickly enough and can wind up hurting myself while confused. People have turned out my nightlight before and it’s not cool because I’ve gotten hurt, and could accidentally hurt someone else. Please just try to be mindful that others may have reasons they do things that they may not want to share with you, and it’s not your business or right to intrude.

I literally set a timer so I don't hog the machines, so I don't have it on for long, but I DO have PTSD and the room's location and set up gives me anxiety when I have to walk into it with the lights off. The next time someone does that, I'm going to leave a very nice note asking them to please stop, as I have reasons. :/

I have a bucket in my shower to catch the cold water as it heats up, then use that to water plants, flush the toilet, etc. I also save dryer lint to turn into fire starters by packing it into empty toilet paper tubes (everyone really thought i went off the deep end with that one! Lol).

Most of this I have always done them because it is part of my culture (south American - Bolivian). People in my culture are very very mindful about using everything until it breaks, so you will always see people using jars or old bottles and put something else there, or use them as vases. Also with food, we have a big culture of not wasting food. Also, people never NEVER get rid of something just because... it has to be a very good reason, like it's broken or definitely not usable anymore. Mostly they just give things away if they get something new. All of our furniture from the house where I grew up is in either one of my sister´s houses, or on friends' houses and they still use them. Also, my mom still has the very first couch that she bought and she has been renewing it according the new styles for over 40 years now. When I started this movement in my country, I didn´t need to feel grossed by using something that belonged to someone else, etc I mostly concentrated in reducing plastic consumption and started gardening my own food. But it has been a huge struggle HERE in America. I see that the culture of waste is just very deep in American´s minds. I would have never thought it's gross to wash the dishes with just water unless is something that has grease on it or something very difficult to wash, I would do the same. My mom always taught me to save water and light. When I came to live in this country I felt like such a weirdo. I remember the first time I took home an Ice Cream jar to use it as a pot for my plants, people just stared at me and my friends laughed so hard at me for "picking up garbage". Many many of the things that are related to the waste industry are because of this waste culture they have here in North America. I have lived in Japan as well, and there, the same as in my country, everything is recycled, and EVERY LITTLE THING left of food has to be eaten. Globalization is slowly washing people´s minds into thinking that using something one more time is gross, and that really needs to stop. It wasn´t always like that. Oh, and long life to bidets!

It wasn't always this way. Many of us had parents who grew up during the great Depression. My mother never forgot her thrifty ways, and she made sure I knew them as well. I still practice most of them to this day, plus adopting many of my own. It is sad that there is so much waste in this country. There is also a big sense of entitlement in many places. Usually, the first thing that ever changes that is a personal financial hardship. It's a shame that it has to be that way. Maybe the economic effects of this current pandemic will actually teach us a thing or two. Something good has to come out of all this.

I work at a daycare, and when the kids bring cereal in a plastic baggie, I will bring it home wash it out and use it again. At our house we have a whole drawer of used baggies. If we have to many I will recycle them at our local grocery store.

Try to use dry beans and lentils and soak them at home to avoid using canned products. Not always convenient but it’s a better way to portion control. If I’m using a bottled liquid product (lotion, shampoo, soap, cleaning products, salad dressings, soy sauce, vinegar, etc) and I’m down to about 25-30% of the product left, I add in a bit of water, give it shake, and continue using the diluted version, which generally works just as fine as the undiluted version. This way I get more uses out of the product and can hold off on getting another. We also use old toothbrushes as tools in aid of detail house cleaning (sinks, showers). My dad does this thing where if he used a lime or lemon in a recipe, he’ll keep the leftover peels to use to scrub down any copper or stainless steel bowls or pots to give them extra shine There’s probably more but these were just the first few which came to mind

You just reminded me of one. My favorite salad dressing is so thick, it has to be spooned out of the jar. So before I even use it, I fill it to the rim with water & give it a good shake. I continue to add water each time I use it until the jar is about half full. By then, it pours easily. I've never noticed a change in the taste, either. Just the thickness. 🤔

Just starting on my low waste journey, and I am so glad I was raised dirt poor... Just a few things I picked up from my childhood... I can't remember the last time I bought clothes or furniture new... Thrift and roadside for the win! Keeping coffee tubs for storage (they stack! And are typically air proof) Reusing tortilla bags for the giant zip lock bags they are. Bar soap for everything (in addition to body and skin, you can also drop shavings in a jar of water for dish soap/all purpose cleaner) But you asked about wierd ones.... Cat litter tubs as bulk storage. I clean em out real good, and use them for animal feed and dry goods, as well as planters for porch vegetables... I switched from that cat litter to something with cardboard packaging a long time ago, but those tubs are holding strong... And my family looked at me like I was insane for suggesting cat litter tubs for our rice 😂😂😂

My family would find it weird if I simply went through OUR kitchen trash and clean and put stuff in the recycling bin even though it saved them so many garbage bags. My parents told me to stop. Now that I've moved out, their 1-2 bags a week went to almost a bag a day and mind you it's only three of them (all adults). I think my sister is becoming a little more mindful since I've left. Now if I see a huge plastic item at my job, I'll stealthily take it to recycle at home lol or cardboard I'll break it down and take it to the warehouse to have it recycled

YES!!! picking stuff up from the side of the road RULES. I moved into a new house a little over a year ago and, although I won't pick up anything with fabric, I have picked up a ton of stuff. Half the time they are totally fine and dont need any changes. But even when they do they are such little things like a side table has a little knick on the corner=turn that corner to the wall. Someone threw out their coffee table because their kids markered the surface=sanded the top of the table and put on a coat of stain. It cost me like 10 bucks and 15 minutes. Someone was throwing out 6 GORGEOUS oak dining chairs because they accidentally left them out in the rain= reupholstered them with the help of my neighbor and only cost $100 in total (dining chairs are expensive yo so this was a steal). Dining chairs aside, they were all afternoon projects and then they were good as new. Often people throw out things because they dont even think about how to easily fix them or they just don't have room in their house or dont want them anymore. Give upcycling a chance!

One of my favorite stories to share is how my dad used to tell us "3-4 squares is ample!" toilet paper wise haha. I haven't bought new socks in a couple years (feet cold? Add another pair!) Plus most of my clothes are thrifted or hand me downs from friends and family. I haven't purchased garbage bags in over four years- I just use every plastic bag I come across (even a newspaper bag) instead, and focus on recycling and eliminating excess plastic from my life so I don't actually make a lot of trash. I wait for bulky waste every year and get my wooden furniture that way! I don't really use the lights in my house- I utilize natural daylight and turn on a salt lamp at night for about an hour before bed. I also only flush the toilet if I poop. I compost all my produce scraps. I've received things from Vinted (kind of like a European Depop?) that were wrapped in cardboard cereal boxes, or pasta boxes, or empty laundry detergent boxes, and I really love how creative people are with it! Also I'll take (nice) empty glass jars to the local zero waste store where they have a donation shelf for other people to take and use (and sometimes I'll trade some of the jars I bring for the available donated ones, in order to have a matching set later)

One thing my husband thinks is weird is I reuse my shower towels several times (we live in a marina so we walk up to the offices where they have showers) and my husband hates reusing them because they were used "in a shared shower room". But if they haven't touched the floor I feel like it's fine. I hang it up on the boat and dry it and it's fine for several showers. I'll wear the hell out of things like pajamas, jeans, sweatshirts before washing (not things that I sweat like crazy in though). Less washing.

I am weird and don’t like to use my towel a bunch of times as well, idk why this bothers me, but what I do so that it doesn’t feel wasteful is after every shower I will use my towel to wipe everything down while it’s steam covered. Makes things easier to clean later, too, because then everything is being dusted or the top layer is wiped off every other day, so really just have to disinfect once a week without scrubbing. Maybe a suggestion to try to convince your husband to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I rotate between like 4-5 towels + a few hair/face towels and hang them to dry, and I can usually go between 2-3 weeks before needing to wash my towels. I mean, if you’re clean while touching them and you air them out so they dry completely, they’re still clean so why wash them after just one use?

For "empty" jars that I can't scrape out of. I use them to make overnight oats. So far I've had plum, raspberry, Nutella, and peanut butter. Yum! Edit: I also keep a coffee "stir stick" it's a plastic knife I've had for years. I only wash it when I do a. If batch of dishes so once a week or two. Might be gross, but it works.

So once, back when I ate meat a lot more than I do, I literally took the wings my friend had been eating because he left so much meat on the bones, and I ate them clean. He was actually quite disturbed, but made a point of cleaning all the meat off for the rest of the night! Lol I've been dubbed "the trashcan" for as long as I can remember, and there have been times where I met my friends at a restaurant late and didn't need to order anything because I ate what they left. I also: Use "family cloth" from old cotton sheets, will pull recycling out of the office trashcans, use the water from heating up my shower for my dog, reheat my coffee 20x because I never drink it quickly enough, bring our french press to work since they only have a keurig, also wash somethings with just water.

D B so what about hankerchiefs? You are spreading a lie right now by saying it isn't hygenic... You can use fabric to blow your nose as it was like that in the olden days... you just have to wash them and prior to wash leave in a seperate bag. Ex: I use a wetbag for cloth diapers, reusable pantie liners, hankerchiefs and reusable toilet paper for when I pee... I wash all of these double cycle and no fabric softner, I also can have them soak in some type of desinfectant if I was sick or w.e ....

They were actually very often sick, and it was normal for people to die from easily preventable infections. Yes you can use fabric, if you don't reuse it, without a wash in between. Most people do not do that, so using a cleenex is more hygienic. This is something to be aware of, especially with the current situation. :) And also, unless you wash the mentioned above at about 90 degree celsius, some bacteria will still survive.

D B I can understand where you're comming from but saying that it's unhygenic is still false in some sense. All I'm trying to say is you can totally use hankers as long as you clean them. Obviously someone who is sick and constantly reusing the same one without washing is spreading a germ... Also please consider that in the olden days people didn't also shower very often and wash hands as commonly as today... meaning that the diseases didn't only or necessarily come from the hankies but potentially other things or places....

Now i buy loose lead tea and just use small mounts and since i don't take it out, it just sits longer so in the end i use less. I also then might add some hot water through the day aswell, so I'm technically reusing the tea.

We have cloth toilet paper that we use and wash or like the rest or the world we use water. It’s made of an old sheet that tore in the middle and I cut up. I’m so happy that I never recycle glass jars. I keep them and reuse them. Recently my husband who is a doctor( who stays outside the house at another house) I use the glass containers to give him food. We have enough containers to rotate between, him, garage for a week and then inside sanitized. All the eco things I’ve done, I’m now so thankful because I’m not worried about running out. I now grind my own flour from wheat berries, make my own cashew milk and make my own veggie stock. I’m a more independent consumer. I’m looking into making my own tahini(I already make my own hummus) almond butter, etc.

Ooh! And little rubber bands and twisty ties that come on bread or produce, I like to save them in a little jar in my kitchen and they’re super useful for all sorts of things. I mainly use them to kinda tie my house plants to their stakes to keep them growing properly :)

Diana Cao This works for wool too, which is naturally antimicrobial, but if you want to be especially safe you can put it out in the sun. Washing wool always changes the wool quality imo, even if you carefully handwash, so putting your wool or cashmere or fancy thread sweaters out in the sun for sanitizing is great to make them last way longer. I never had a dryer in my home growing up, so we always hang dried everything outside - bedsheets, blankets, pillows, socks, etc.

i use a 2 part water and 1 part white vinegar mix for wiping down surfaces all the time! it is great for wiping up dusty surfaces and avoiding harsh cleaners. disinfectant are really only needed when bodily fluids are on the surfaces... i also use just a cloth and water to wipe down kitchen counters and places where i eat after cooking/eating

I sew and try to make the most out of every scrap of fabric. I made lovely floor cushion stuffed with old fabric scraps. I take old tee shirts and make rugs or cleaning rags. The old flannel sheets I cut up sew and turn them into wipes for noses and bums. I turned my husband's old work shirts into produce bags. I switched to making my own menstrual pads because buying would have cost 3x the amount to make with less quality, then eventually I found the Nixit cup and use that more.

When I'm cooking something like veggies and you have to toss it in oil, I always just rub the extra oil on my hands and legs and body instead of washing it off. It's like a free moisturizer that would have gone down the drain!

The free section on Craigslist is my holy grail. I have gotten so many items for free that are in great condition that they were just going to toss. It’s also a great resource to get rid of some stuff you no longer use. Another mans trash situation! I love it.

I have this great story about grabbing stuff off the side of the road. Our family had just moved into a new place and as we were driving into our neighborhood one day there was this array of electronics and this cabinet...I encouraged my mom to go investigate and we ended up finding this mint condition vintage record hutch COMPLETELY FREE it was such a winning moment for me since my mom was kinda hesitant but we ended up bringing it home and it still sits in our living room to this day!

I have a friend who needs to move out cos her landlord doesn't like cats (the cat in questions is a gorgeous fluffy boi) and I was like go to the supermarkets and ask for some boxes, fruit boxes (esp banana) are SUPER durable. (We still have the banana box in the garage that's seen 2 uni moves and me relocating up north to live with bae.) - Tea towels/clothes that you dont mind potentially getting ruined are also fantastic instead of bubble wrap. - packing your jars/containers like Russian dolls is great - minimises smashing potential and saves space. Other stuff: - Using the tumble dryer to heat the flat (Its on for like 3 - 4 hours) alas we don't have anywhere to hang duvet covers (trust me, I've tried, it took 2 weeks to dry completely, in summer #ukproblems) but on the plus side I'm way too lazy to change the sheets more than twice a month - finally figuring out the radiator timer settings - covering up the extractor fan (aka a HUGE hole in the wall with a fan in it) and just opening the doors/windows - candles and battery powered Fairy lights for that weird time of day when it's not dark enough to put the lights on but it's not light enough to comfortably read a book

Um yes. I do that with green tea bags. I brew two cups with a sachet each and then the third cup with both the sachets. It's a wee bit lighter but it's good none the less. THEN my dear friend I split open the teabags to use the leaves for a natural face/body scrub thing. Or as manure for the house-plants.

What I do to not have a overflow of glass: I have a designated bin, if I need a glass, I can get it and use. If the bin is full, I put the glass with recycling... And the cycle is starting over again. About shipping stuff.. We store boxes. But if it is full... it is full... And we will get through it, and select the ones we really are going to use, and toss the rest. I do not like to have a lot of extra's.... XD

Also when beeswax candles melt I’ll boil the leftover bits on the stove and fish out any old wicks, ash, etc and then I add coconut oil or Shea butter and an essential oil to make chapstick. I usually do this once per quarter.

Things I don't find weird but my friends do: -To avoid my greens (spinach and kale, mostly) that I use for smoothies to wilt and go bad, I blend them up and put them in an ice-tray in my freezer! That way they're always good to go! (I always get the question: "Élo, what's that green thing in your freezer?!" -I keep all my food scraps to make homemade veggie broth! One thing I have to get done during quaratine, actually.! -To avoid food waste, I don't necessarily calculate the amount of days that something has been in the fridge, but I determine with the look and smell if it's still good (take note that I don't eat meat, so most things are fine, and that I am nonetheless careful of certain foods)! - Everytime I go do groceries I go check out the rack of food that's in sale (the foods that are close or the day of their exiration date)! It's cheaper and just as good. I thought my mom was a total weirdo for doing it when I was younger but here I am, slowing becoming my mother.! - This tip is actually something you already talked about in a video, but I grab the lonely bananas instead of a bunch, to avoid waste! Everytime I grocery shop with friends or family thay always ask me why I do it, and I'm always happy to let them know (most of my friends and family do that as well now) ! :)

Hahaha. Speaking of grabbing lonely fruit. I decided one day to grab the lonely grapes. Took me about 5 whole minutes if not more, to pick the amount I needed at the end of the day at the supermarket. Coz u can't just grab them off the tray coz they'll get scratched and injured. So u need to pick them out one/two at a time. And i also take my own polythene/ paper bags from pervious shopping trips that I use over and over to bag and weigh the diff fruits and stuff. coz theyre still in perfect usable condition. Sometimes for bigger fruits like oranges and apples I just weigh them sans a bag in the machine directly, and then bag them together. The counter staff always looks at me like, "um. Where did you get this bag from, it's not one of ours"...and they sometimes look at their supervisor to ask if it's okay to bag it in that. It's still been smooth though.

i havent used toilet paper in months lmao. just water and a cloth (i cut down an old fitted sheet i hated, so loads of squares!!) and then wash the cloth at boiling heat. not too much different than underwear in the wash honestly

I pee in the shower a lot lol. I also adjust the gas on the stove! I do it because it makes me uncomfortable when the flame reaches up toward pot handles, especially if they're plastic. It makes me anxious they're gonna melt. I didn't consider the energy factor until now!

Since COVID-19 shelter in place, the number of times I go out in a day has been reduced to maybe a 30 minute walk or twice a week for groceries, so I feel less gross during the day so I’ve also been showering less. I always do a mini lower body only shower after I poop since I feel cleaner and the temporary place I live in doesn’t have a bidet. When I was in school, I showered once a day or every other day. Now I shower maybe every 3 days. I keep a diffuser and fan running so there’s moisture in the air so I sweat less and feel less gross, but we also leave small bowls of water around the house so the air stays cool and slightly moist, which keeps away dry skin problems and some allergies. (I live in CA, the air is dry here.) The bowls of water around the house is typically an Asian house thing though.

please don't keep switching off those fluorescent energy saving "bulbs". the first couple hours they use more energy than an old bulb. so doing the on-and-off with those is super energy wasteful. but LEDs are fine. and also basically don't use energy so do whatever you like with those. edit: the switch on with the fluorescent ones takes as much energy as the respective classic bulb uses in 8 hours (calculating in that for these 8 hours the saving bulb is switched on and uses that small amount)

I agree with the soap on dishes thing. I've lived with so many people who don't clean dishes well, even though they use soap. I'm a little bit of a stickler for cleanliness of dishes, but the truth is that soap does nothing for many dishes. If you have an oatmeal pot, or dry measuring cups, basically anything that didn't touch fat, and like you said to be safe, didn't touch your mouth, plain water gets it just as clean as using soap.

When I'm washing dishes, I only fill up one big item with hot soapy water (bowl, pot, tupperware), instead of the whole sink. And I wash the smaller items one by one. I'll also let my sponge soak in white vinegar once in a while to make it last longer, cause this ressource is precious !

YES! I had a segment in where I said this but I didn't want to come off as "pushy vegan" but I TOTALLY agree! I don't have to worry about getting sick from raw meat/etc. I think the risk of getting sick is obviously still there (as is with anything and it obvi depends on your personal environment's overall cleanliness) but it's far less, I think? And if anything, I bet it's better for our microbiome because our culture seems to over-wash things haha 💛

My dad always taught me that as long as the house isn't crazy hot, day old coffee can be reheated in the pot and still be fine. We've never gotten sick by it. I tend to mend my clothes, and if I can't, I make them into something I can use, or I'll make bears for gifts. I actually do a lot of these lol

I turn off extra lights too. We have a kitchen with over head & light under the cabinets plus a dining area with its own light. When my brother & sis in law are doing the dishes I turn off the light in the eating area & cabinet light. They get mad. I say why do you need it on when the nobody is there?! I unplug the airfreshner upstairs & turn the one in the hallway on the main floor to its lowest. I hate the toxic chemicals of air freshners. I clean my washroom with baking soda & rubbing alcohol. I give water that would be dumped down the drain from an unfinished glass or boiled water to the plants or grass. I print double sided & make sure I'm not printing any extra pages. I'm giving lotions/body wash to the hospital rehab for bingo nights. Store giftbags are used for rehab crafts so I give them there. I use a watering can as a bidet. Its common in Asia. I cut open tubes of lotion & now toothpaste to get every last drop. There is so much still in there when the pump can't get it. I mean you paid for it so use it all! Shampoo I add a little water when its almost empty to get the last bit. If I see something in the recycling with the lid on or not rinse I'll take it out & do it properly. I really hate things not being recycled properly. Our community uses green bins. I use a small paper bag (the ones I get from the pharmacy) as my green bin upstairs under the sink. I just put tissues in there. Hair & nail clippings can also go in. When the bag is full I roll it up & put it in the large bin. My mom thinks its gross but I don't care. I'm reducing my makeup wipe use & cutting them in half or 3 pieces. I want to use reusable cotton pads for removing makeup but my mom won't allow it in the washer. I haven't found a solution to get rid of nail polish remover pads though. Looking into bamboo toothbrushes, aluminum free deodorant in recyclable packaging & maybe toothpaste in a jar (if anyone has recommendations please share!). Some makeup companies offer refill tins btw.

I've recently learned how energy intensive streaming is so when I see someone leave youtube or Netflix on while leaving the room because "it's not a big deal" it bugs me. I've also learned that downloading and then listening is less energy intensive that just streaming audio.

Melanie Cusick I still download music to my 2009 iPod Classic and 2013 iPod Touch which still work perfectly and both are built to last for ages. They also have way more storage space than iPhones nowadays for music. I’ve hit song limit on Spotify Premium in the past (10,000 songs), and I don’t have that tiny limit with my old 160 gb iPod.

In my town there's a zero waste swap group where people are swapping everything from furniture to jars and even services, you can post if you need something and if it is pricy people often offer to lend it to you for example prom dresses and etc. ☺️

I am using the soaking/rinsing water of rice, lentils, chickpeas or whatever to water my plants. Also a weird one: I collect banana peals in water and use that for fertilizing my plants. Due to potassium and other nutrients, it helps my plants grow. :) Also, before giving fresh water for my dog, I use his left over old water to water my plants.

I always reach out to my neighbours for any freebies before I look at other means of getting thing. Recently, I managed to get a whole heap of plant pots for my new veg garden project. I also do the plain water to clean some of my lesser soiled dishes. As I use only natural ingredients in my soap and shampoo, I will reuse the bath-water to water my plants; they seem to be thriving on it. Love your channel - such great advice and you do so with many laughs thrown in too.

i do the stove one with the gas and my dad also taught me this, i find it quite funny. also keeping jars, wearing clothes for a long time, unplugging things and not wasting food. i am not a "low waste person", i love skincare and make up and i buy it , but i try and do the changes that i can do
